That's the biggest thing tonight?
Not the win to pull the Rangers back within .5 of the wild card? Not the performance by the young guys?
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Well, the attendance is pretty huge.
The biggest thing? Nah.
But you gotta admit getting 40k + down the stretch would be pretty huge in terms of the team’s bottom line and might free up some money into the budget.
It also might make them a more attractive target for a good owner whenever one emerges.
Yah, 48k is pretty sweet.

That was fun.
Feliz, Borbon, Holland, Andrus…the future is here. Borbon and Andrus damn well better be 1&9 in the lineup tomorrow.
I can't believe how quickly these young guys are adapting to the bigs.

What does all this say about the Rangers scouting staff?
Preller, JD, and all those individual scouts deserve a huge round of applause.
it's one thing to be able to see physical talent it's another to see true character.

dumb question: who's starting for the rangers tomorrow.
I know i’ve heard but forgotten.
Why is Kinsler hated by other teams' fans?
I was looking at the Red Sox site and half the messages are about how much the fans hate Kinsler? I can’t believe any baseball fan would hate Ian. Do they hate him just because he’s good—so it’s a sign of respect—or do they hate him because they think he’s arrogant?
probably yes and yes

its because hes arguably better then their midget of a second baseman

always rant about how he’s small and crowds the plate and takes huge swings

Just checked in and saw them. Put a smile on my face.

Tom Hicks should hire some zetas to take out that maricon Cabrera – I know he’s busted but the zetas work cheap – and I’d love to see that anti-semetic spic have those zetas get medieval on his pimply arse with some pliers and a blowtorch for trying to give a lobotomy to that loveable jewish chap, our beloved Ian ( whose life story should be out soon and he will be played by Adrian Brody). Or if Hicks is too cheap we can get Gov Rick "Blowdry"Perry to ask his friends the Mossad to take out that Cabrera hijo de puta.

How 'bout banning those who write "Jesus F______ Christ".
There are a number of Christians on this forum who are appalled by the lack of sensibility found herein. The above slur is an enormous affront to us…but then we realize that dogpiling on believers is a favorite pastime these days.
Ephesians 3:20-21...and I can only imagine
Yes, poor us
we’re just so oppressed here in the Bible belt.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I think...
…in the midst of a highly emotional moment, it is mostly believers who will use that phrase. Maybe they’re not as devout or pious as you, and it’s definitely a sin and an affront to God if you read the Bible which I’m sure you have, but it’s nothing against YOU.
All three big religions are whiny and think everybody’s out to get them. The Muslims go apeshit over cartoons, but I guess they do have a chip on their shoulder because of the Crusades. Then again that was a while ago. The Jews, of course, went through that holocaust thing not too awful long ago. Then there’s Israel getting attacked every other day or so. The Christians…well I guess the Roman Empire didn’t like them too much but that was a long ass time ago.
Next time you think about Christians being persecuted or dogpiled, think of Nazi Europe and shut the hell up, please. Chirstians are not being persecuted or victimized. In fact they have a lot of power in this society.
Is it wrong to say “Jesus Christ” in anger? For a Christian it’s a sin. God deals with sin. Otherwise it’s no different than using “Fuck” or “Shit”, which are most certainly not slurs but exclamations.
Anyway, don’t take it so personally. It’s not an affront to YOU. It’s an affront to GOD. And while you may be a great person, I’ll be damned if you’re God.

What “believers” don’t seem to realize is that complaining about silly things like random slang is one of the reasons why they get dogpiled on in the first place. It really does nothing but make people facepalm and provide their opponents with more ammo to fling back at them.
Not that I’m against evangelizing and “making a stand for your beliefs” and all that fun stuff, but you kinda have to pick your battles.

In a way I'm one of them
Christian. Will stand up for my beliefs. But I’m not a part of the organized thing because, frankly, they’re the ones doing the real dogpiling.
Look at the response to that idiotic Janet Jackson thing a couple of years ago. And there are thousands upon thousands of other examples. Like in the town I grew up in, there was a lady selling dildos and vibrators and stuff like that out of her home, on the internet. Her neighbors went crazy and practically took over a city council meeting about it. Of course there was nothing the city manager or the council could or would do, but they sure did raise a lot of hell about it. Not to mention the whole gay marriage/civil union debate. Then they’ll work real hard to get the Ten Commandments put up in some courthouse or whatever, and wait around for five years or however long it takes for someone to challenge it in court, then make national news out of it. Oh, and can’t forget the “war on Christmas”. Oh, no. “Happy Holidays” is such an abomination, you know. How dare Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day be referred to together like that.
Anyway, it’s all dumb.
by Black Francis on Aug 16, 2009 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
I was raised Christian, and I kinda saw both the good and the bad – my Dad’s kind of a theolog-head, and was always pretty passionate about his beliefs, but he didn’t get stupid about things.
My mother on the other hand, has always trended more toward the extremely fundy-nut end of the spectrum. Truth be told, she pretty much turned me off on the whole organized religion thing over the course of my high school years, although my Dad and I still talk regularly about our beliefs and stuff.

From my niece & nephew’s birthday party, though I did catch the first seven innings on TV and the last two on KRLD.
Great game from Dutch, Feliz, Andrus, and Jules Borbon. Loved all the steals off noodle-arm Varitek.
And at the risk of stirring up a hornet’s nest, I loved this quote from the Salty to the DL pre-game thread from our favorite Beacon of Optimism:

We have been in several
Bench clearing brawls over the last few years. Sorry I don’t agree with hitting an opposing player when you are chasing that team in a playoff race. This is a young team that needs to keep their composure. This team has a chance to do something that hasn’t been done since 1999. Let it play out.

from Durrett
I talked with several veterans and they all agreed that Fernando Cabrera was not throwing at Ian Kinsler intentionally in the ninth. In fact, three of them said the same thing, including Michael Young: You don’t throw at someone in the head on purpose.
So don’t expect any craziness tomorrow. I don’t have a problem with that. This team needs to just worry about winning games, not any extra-curricular activities. Kinsler is OK. At least he sure seemed that way in the clubhouse as GM Jon Daniels came in to check on him. The helmet did its job.
I don’t think the Rangers should just ignore Cabrera hitting Ian in the head even if it was an accident. I also don’t think Nippert should hit a Red Sox. Something up and in toPpedroia would get the message across just fine.

Watched the beaning again on DVR
The most interesting thing is Tek’s reaction. He seemed disgusted – dropped his head in the crouch for a good few seconds and followed Kinsler but it didn’t seem he was concerned with Kinsler charging but just concerned for Ian. Watch it again if you can – Tek certainly didn’t call for a beaning especially in the head.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Varitek's reaction is why I don't think it was on purpose.

And then Tek shouting back at Ian?
That part didn’t look real concerned or whatever.

Pure speculation
But I’m guessing Tek was yelling at Ian that no one meant to him in the noggin. And I have no problem with Ian yelling at Tek (again speculation) “I don’t fucking appreciate being hit in the head.” Actually, I could read some of Ian’s statements and the word “fuck” definately made it in there.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I guess. You can’t get guys who don’t want to beef to beef. It’s just not in their character. But this seems akin to when the skinny little nerd gets bullied and then decides against sticking up for himself and says, “You’re not worth it” as he walks away when the bully very clearly WAS worth it, he just doesn’t want to throw down cause he’s puss.

So being right in line with baseball mores
Makes a player a puss? Maybe you’d like to try to kick MY’s ass? He’s from a family of pretty accomplished boxers. Tonight was just the “it’s baseball” courtesy passover. Frankly they (the vets) don’t give a shit if it was intentional or not, harm was done, and retribution comes at an appropriate time. Not when you are 1/2 game back of that particular offensive opponent and have a catch ’em now game the next day.

Anybody who thinks these guys are pussies, buy a game ticket and run onto the field directly at one of them. Bet you’ll find out different!
Seriously, this is an example of “baseball manners” and the media quotes probably don’t mean a lot. I’m sure there will be some sort of retaliation but not if the game is tight and I wouldn’t expect anyone to get a pitch in the head.
I really don’t think that pitch was meant for Kinsler’s skull. Perhaps I’m crazy, but I’ve never heard of Cabrerra being a sociopath. Maybe they meant to hit him or buzz him up and in but it got away.

Why not skip over CD and bring up Smoak--looks like he's figured out AAA pitching
4 for his last 7, .289 BA over last 10 games, plus 8 walks and 5 doubles. I know it won’t happen and he needs some more seasoning—but it would be a mind-blowing move.
Because Davis is out-performing him in AAA
And is already on the 40 man roster.

You seem to be a big fan
Of tiny sample sizes.
by brettgardner on Aug 16, 2009 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions
Right--but that's not my point
If we take Smoak’s whole AAA season—it’s a poor season , but if we divide up in five-game segments, he’s got progressively better in each segment. I’m accounting for the whole season, but looking at the trend—is there improvement over time? And clearly, there has been and would predict his large sample at the end of the year will be quite impressive—I’m predicting from a group of small samples
The point
Is that you can’t make meaningful predictions from such small samples. He could be improving at a consistent level or it could just be a fluke.
by brettgardner on Aug 16, 2009 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions
Could be--but the evidence so far shows consistent improvement
that trends towards the same numbers he’s put up at other levels of the minors.

I meant that comment in jest, but now that I think
about it, are we still in the pre-Bill James days when GMs didn’t think that college performance gave no indication of a prospect’s professional performance? I think it’s been established that college performance is a good indicator. And the fact is that Smoak was an absolute stud in the best college conference in the nation.
And none of this matters now
Because no matter how good he was in college, that doesn’t mean squat now that he’s in the minors and means even less when talking about bringing him up a little over a year after he was drafted.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Being great in college
It was why he went high in the first round. It gives you additional basis to trust that his performance in AA is sustainable. It is data for evaluating his future.
It doesn’t mean, though, that a hot 5 game stretch in AAA after struggling there much of the year makes him ML ready.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 16, 2009 1:01 AM CDT up reply actions
No, but the arc of his minor league
career is a lot like Longoria’s—who played two years at Long Beach St. with a stud second year, had a great first year in the minors, and then struggled when called up to AAA in the middle of his second year in the minors. Again, I think Smoak needs more time, but I if we look at his trend and consider his past performance, he’s going to continue to improve.
No one's saying he won't continue to improve or he'll suck
Just that he very likely won’t be good this year and there is no reason to bring him up this year.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
What do you consider impressive?
There’s what, 3 weeks left in the minor league season? He’s at a .712 OPS now in 39 games. He’s holding his own and still very patient playing in AAA in his first full pro season. That’s great, but not exactly signifying he could come up to the Majors and put up even replacement level numbers right now. And of course, this is all assuming that he is making these small improvements.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
and the fact he's not on the 40-man
but if this a “youth movement” as Wash was saying tonight—then let’s go whole hog
Except we're playing for the playoffs right now
And even if we were rebuilding, it would be dumb and pointless to add Smoak to the 40 man roster right now and have him play in the Majors.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
That doesn't make sense
Just because it is a youth movement doesn’t mean that, a half-game out in the playoff race, you bring up a guy who isn’t ready yet and hasn’t exactly been dominant at AAA.
Particularly when he plays the same position as another highly regarded young player in AAA, who has been dominating in AAA.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 16, 2009 12:31 AM CDT up reply actions
Adam, I know you're right, CD is pounding the ball--but I wanted to eliminate all the
reasons to not at least consider Smoak as an option—and I’ve impressed by the way he shook off the early AAA slump and seems to be on track.
Why not bring up CD?
I think we need to find out about CD and this is a perfect time to do just that, and without the Trumps All!!!-related implications and would leave us the option of Longoria’ing the fuck out of his sexy little butt next year.

Siege has shown he go two innings if need be, and Two Frank needs to get thrown back out there at some point. Unless he physically not right, in which case he needs to be on the DL.

Prolly could use Siege more than an inning
But I’m thinking that Frank^2 didn’t look right and using him for more than just a few pitches would prolly not be a good idea.
Point being that this is a crucial game and despite the fact that our bullpen has been close to lights out, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of good options for a game that is likely to need 3-4 innings from the bullpen.

EG is reporting that the vets don't think it was intentional
Nippert doesn’t seem like an Aaron Myette-type who is going to go rogue and throw at someone.
And even if he were, Washington or Maddux will probably go remind him before the game that they need a bunch of innings out of him, and the last thing the Rangers need is for him to be run early for throwing at someone and putting them in a bad spot with the bullpen.

High-octane?
What team have they been watching?
Our offense is more like a Ford Pinto these days…if it starts at all, you’re ecstatic.

I am embarassed about this
but I owned a Pinto one time
The 8 stolen bases reminded me of this clip
Earl Weaver talking about team speed. Skip to the :55 second mark (or not, the whole thing is funny and very NSFW). This is probably the best description of this radio interview:
“He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master. "

so a question
does the ball in the head bother Kins even more coming from the team that pedroia plays second base for? they do have a mini rivalry
No.
But I know for a fact he’s had it with getting beaned. The “Padilla made us do it” excuse is over. Something is up.

Yeah
But then again, so did Willy Taveras and Juan Pierre.
If he can back it up with a .355+ OBP next year, he’s going to be a helluva leadoff guy.

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
READ THIS!
The video site I hosted on won’t let it be up in the fanshot window, so I put my gif of all 16 ks. I don’t know if it will even animate up there.
Anyway, on a whim I wanted to make a video of Feliz’s 16 Ks last night and asked the post game thread for music suggestions.. did the two most popular.
3 and a half minute “Be Happy” version.
35 second “Bodies hit the floor” version.
And finally, heres a link to the link to the .gif.
the preceding post was a great success.

Most epic wrong thread fail ever, heh
But that’s totally okay, since the fanshots sometimes don’t get all the traffic the rest of the site does.

Excellent
“Be Happy” is very relaxing to watch in a weird way, sort of like the ending sequence of Dr.Strangelove.

Good show old man
A suggestion on the ‘Be Happy’ video: I think you should try mixing in a few layers of broadcast audio…
Like maybe a Lewin ‘wow’, or a Nadel call (I know the one against Papi last night got a thunderous ovation)…. and maybe interweave them in select spots where the music is dragging or you have a slow-motion replay for your picture
That was actually part of the plan
But I couldn’t get my capture device to get the audio, i had it turned on but just didn’t come through for some reason… might have something to do with windows 7.
Although it occurs to me now I could get audio from mlb.tv at least. Although the audio I really wanted was harold reynolds and the mlbnetwork people going nuts when they figured out his changeup was a changeup.
I might try to work it out, no promises.
and thanks.

That's some fun stuff
