Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

66-50

Friday night seems like a hell of a long time ago, doesn't it?

A half game up in the Wild Card.  The first time at 16 above .500 since the final day of the 2004 season (when they ended the year at 16 games over).

I like baseball.

well that and 38 doubles

but part of me would like to run him through waivers and see if we can get a team to bite at him for trade, since he’s gone at the end of the year. Knowing how much the team respects him, I seriously doubt that happens.

I guess Murph’s sent down, or they hold off for 2 weeks for Cruz or Davis to come up

Liverpool

I got into watching the English Premier League back in 2005- just watched matches for a few weeks to see what teams I liked, as well as reading about the history of the clubs.

I saw a few Liverpool matches, and was impressed by a couple of their players, and the fact that they had an absolutely insane fan base, since I really tend to get involved with whatever clubs I root for. Plus most of my favorite English bands have been from either Liverpool or Birmingham, so there was that connection too.

I watch the matches at the Londoner in the Uptown section of Dallas- we have a supporters’ club that meets there. We had probably 80-90 for this morning’s match, and there were still around 20 there when I left around 2:30.

Brief summary from someone who is kind of a newby

The three really big leagues are in England, Spain and Italy. Then there are sort of second tier leagues in Germany, France, Netherlands, and you could argue a couple of others like Scottland and Portugal.

The really, really, really big clubs are Manchester Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in England, Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain, and the two Milan clubs and Juventus in Italy. Spain and Italy have some big clubs that a tier below that, like Roma, Valencia and Villarreal, and there are a few clubs in England, namely Man City and to a lesser degree Everton and Aston Villa who are not that far from challenging the traditional big four. In Man City’s case, they have a really rich oil baron spending crazily to try to put that club on the path that Chelsea went on when Abramovich, the Russian mobster bought them.

Those top leagues all have around 20 teams. The top 3-4 get to go to the Champions League the next season, and the bottom few get relegated to a lower division. There are no playoffs, but each country has a national cup, which is just a tournament, and the CL is basically a cup as well, so those are sort of their playoffs, while the regular season “championship” is just the best record after those 38 or so games in league.

Player movement in soccer is all based on buying and selling, and the players have a say in where they go for a few reasons, but generally they push to play at a bigger club and for bigger wages. There are windows where transfers are allowed in the countries. The big one is in the summer through August 31, and there is also one in January, which is sort of like the trade deadline in our sports. The only other thing that jumps to mind is that most coaches of these big clubs are also their own GM. The team “manager” traditionally encompasses both duties.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

so it seems

like there are so many different things you can win in the English League, like the FA Cup or the League Cup or the season championship. what is considered the holy grail in all of Europe for an individual season? or is there one? What would be a great season for one of the big 4 in England or any other country for that matter?

I LOVE THE RANGERS!!!

by dstar442005 on Aug 16, 2009 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Treble

League Title, League tournament, Champions league

Like what Barcelona did last year.

A good season is winning the league title (season) or Champions league tournament. A great season is winning both.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 16, 2009 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

To add to what GhettoBear said, the big two are the Championship (season) and Champions League, and it depends on the club as far as how those two are valued. My sense is that the Spanish and Italian clubs value the CL the most. In England, it’s more of a coin flip. Chelsea definitely wants the CL badly, and Benitez seems to value it the highest. Arsene Wenger says that he values the league championship the most. The FA Cup is a big deal (I think because of its tradition as much as anything), though clearly behind those two. And the Carling Cup (league cup) is nowhere near the other three. The big clubs don’t even play their starters in that.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2009 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

who do

you root for, Z? and why?

I LOVE THE RANGERS!!!

by dstar442005 on Aug 16, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Arsenal

I started rooting for them because of Arsene Wenger and their style of play (so Wenger). You’ll obviously get a different story from fans of their rivals, but he’s a fascinating coach to follow. He’s dedicated to playing an aesthetically pleasing style of football, and though a lot of people are frustrated that he won’t spend money, it’s really interesting to watch how he handles his roster.

I’m going to get to see them play twice this season, will be my first chance to watch them in person.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

ok, cool.

i know this is a silly question, but how does the MLS compare? and the Mexican league? how does the SuperLiga compare to the Champions League?

I LOVE THE RANGERS!!!

by dstar442005 on Aug 16, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I always tell people that I think the reason we don’t like soccer is that we’re watching such a watered down version of it. Would you like gridiron football if all you watched was some Indian league? Would basketball have ever become big here if all we saw was WNBA?

In the Premier League, you have the kinds of athletes that we have dominating NFL and NHL games, and they play a tough, frenetic style that is more exciting than even the other two big leagues (La Liga and Serie A).

So it doesn’t even compare, MLS or SuperLiga to the big time European competitions, barely even looks like the same sport. There are players here who do and could play over there, but with a couple of exceptions (Tim Howard, Rafael Marquez, Brian McBride recently) you’re talking about our very best players being bit players on lower table clubs or in lesser leagues.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2009 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Watching the MLS is like watching low A baseball, but with only organizational players and no prospects. For the most part, any MLS players who are good enough to play elsewhere, are playing elsewhere. On the Fox Soccer Report last week they were doing their Six in Sixty Q&A and they asked players whether they would rather be an MLS All-Star or a bench player in the EPL. Every one of them said they would rather be in England. Too bad they forgot to ask Donovan that since he would rather dominate in LA than try to earn playing time in Europe. But that is another rant entirely.

I would love for some non-goalie Americans to have major roles on an EPL team, but with the exception of Dempsey who gets a fair amount of time at Fulham but is inconsistent, it just isn’t happening right now. Altidore going on loan to Hull City is nice. They are dreadful, which should help him get some playing time. (Although they did hang in there with my Blues yesterday, although Chelsea not playing well may have had something to do with that.)

1B Hank Blalock went 0-for-4 to extend his hitless skid to 13 at-bats. He’s now hitting .200 for the second half with a .200 OBP thanks to no walks in 120 at-bats.

I used to really, really like Hank…but this is beyond pathetic. This isn’t a bad streak-at this point it is his new reality, it seems. I wonder if he’ll ever get it back?

The problem with Josey propping up Hank

is that I’m starting to root against Hank, just to spite Josey. I don’t like rooting against the success of our own players. I want Hank to succeed. I want all the players to be successful.

Josey, please find something other button to push so that isn’t related to the performance of the players. Maybe you can go back to bashing JD.

Pitching probables this week

Twins at Rangers
Monday: Liriano vs. Hunter
Tuesday: Pavano vs. Feldman
Wednesday: Baker vs. Millwood
Thursday: Swarzak vs. Holland

Rangers at Rays
Friday: Nippert vs. Kazmir
Saturday: Hunter vs. Garza
Sunday: Feldman vs. Price

Matchups against the Twins all look decently favorable. Kazmir’s been down this season, and we’ve knocked Price around before. 5-2 this week looks reasonable.

Meanwhile, LAA has Santana against Hernandez to finish up in Baltimore, then go to Cleveland for Bell/Weaver/Lackey vs. Carmona/Sowers/Masterson and to Toronto for Lackey/O’Sullivan/Bell vs. Rzepczynski/Romero/Richmond. Going to be tough to gain much ground on LAA at all this week, although at least they get Sowers at home.

Boston has Monday off, then goes to Toronto where they have Beckett/Buchholz/Lester vs. Romero/Halladay/Tallet, and then at home against the Yankees for Pettitte/Mitre/Chamberlain vs. Penny/Tazawa/Beckett. We might be able to grab a game or two there.

after reading over the monster and a couple other red sox boards that the douchiest thing in the world is acting like you are better than somebody because you cheer for a team that overall has been more successful than the other person. the rev at halos haven probably has the nastiest case of it all time but a lot of the red sox fans are pretty bad.

A few years ago you drafted units, like the Longhorns receivers or the Southern California quarterbacks. There were so many college teams that with an eight perspn league it was never difficult to find a group that was going to do very well that week.

If you don't want to be addicted

what you really need to avoid is simulation leagues. I’m in one with 225 player rosters, full minor league systems, player agents, and rules that are almost exactly like MLB’s, and fantasy leagues don’t even approach that sort of thing in terms of being interesting. And beyond everything else, you actually play games and set lineups. Much more interesting.

is I can’t be tied down to playing with other people with my off and on work schedule. I would feel like I was holding things up or wasting others’ time. If I did fantasy at all I would probably like what you describe more than roto style.

It would be pretty fantastic

how much would he cost us though, in terms of prospects/salary?

Ugh, it was hot out there today, stupid TBS

It is pretty cool that you have two unproven starters in Holland and Nippert (neither of which was one the opening day roster), neither having their best stuff, yet they battled and completed successful starts to beat Boston in, like, the biggest games of the year.

in theTeixeira trade.

And although Salty was the centerpiece of the trade many Braves fans feared that losing Feliz was a longer term blow to the organisation.

Wonder how much mention this will get in the DMN tomorrow

1 maybe 2 blurbs? While the cowboys training camp coverage gets 6 pages

They quit covering the Rangers this year, remember?

they run the fwst stories

but geez theres just like nothing out there its ALL cowboys.
I suppose my ire is aimed at both news outlets.

It will be only in the selected segments

but the ticket will probably be fun to listen to tomorrow if you’re in a celebratory mood. They probably won’t say anything interesting, but it will be a lot of, “can you believe this? way to go Rangers” and stuff.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 16, 2009 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

even fluff ranger talk on the ticket is better then training camp talk,

Same for Ch 4,5,8, 11

I will be watching Three and a half men or something. Training camp sucks. Although I like the Cowboys, this is pathetic. I wish this was a baseball town.

Four game set with Minnesota on the horizon.

Liriano vs. Hunter
Pavano vs. Feldman
Baker vs. Millwood
Sacrificial lamb vs. Holland

I think we’ve got a good shot in every game, we just have to keep Mauer and Morneau from killing us.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.

by Aquaman, Esq. on Aug 16, 2009 11:16 PM CDT reply actions

yep...

theyve pretty much been crappy lately though

add in Kubel though

also, Liriano still scares me, especially with our lineup lately

by Horns130 on Aug 17, 2009 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Them being crappy lately is what worries me.

It’s almost like this team visibly lets it’s game slide down a notch against crappy teams they should be able to beat up on, and then ramps it up for big series like BoSox. If our offense had the approach it’s had the last three days (along with some actual production from first base) on a more regular basis, we might be in okay shape.

J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
