Finally! Some BBTN love for the Rangers!
Recognition for the BP in Feliz, Wilson, and Frankie and also pointed out the advantage in strength of schedule.
Dave Winfield looked really awkward in the segment
Apart from stumbling around his analysis he pointed out the tough Red Sox schedule going forward with 6 games against NYY 6 against TB and 3 against LAA saying the Rangers have a bunch of games against the Mariners and Athletics while the Rangers have actually have a similar schedule going forward with the same amount of games against those opponents: 6 vs. LAA, 6 vs. TB, 3 vs. NYY. Somehow Winfield made John Kruk look smart.
needless to say
Winfield was a better baseball player then baseball analyst

I could see them wearing them a lot more next year… I’m sure it would result in more jersey sales, etc.

When Ellsbury and Pedroia were retired in the 1st that we would see a pitch into VMart’s ribs.
What do voluntary mean?
Probably for the best
I don’t think any of our players need the extra motivation and it would only serve as a distraction if something bigger came of it. If they do it again though next year, we’re going head hunting.

I didn't watch the game bc of work, but
does anyone know why Elvis and Borbon didn’t attempt a stolen base after getting on base 7 times? Did the situations just not work?
It could well be
that we think that VMart is a better defensive catcher than Varitek now. I swear I don’t remember seeing too many steals on a pitchout.
What do voluntary mean?
Brad Penny
was not pitching for one thing. He gave up 8 steals earlier this year.
People discuss the theory of a player “hitting behind” someone a lot, but, I think M-Y (and others) benefited from Borbon’s disturbances last night and today.
The starter was very cognizant of the speed on 1st.
He was throwing over, going to the slide step, and varying his timing to the plate.

i only have one thing to say to you
“strike this mother@$$%r out!”
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
where do i air my grievances about mr. blalock?
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Would your grievance begind with something like
“He sucks rat balls…….”? If so, please carry on.
"I’m not in the meetings and not part of the discussions; it’s not my responsibility. . My responsibility is to go out and win tonight. My focus is to win tonight. The club has to look at more than just this year." -Michael Young
so
i was kind of happy with just bumping him down in the order. maybe i don’t care what he’s doing as long as it is from #7.
But I think the guy is actually too shitty to bat down there. I don’t really know what a reasonable solution is to the problem. You can’t DFA someone who has been through so many shitty teams but he has literally NO value to the club. he plays totally average defense (that davis could easily duplicate) and he can’t bat for shit. can’t even take a walk that’s being gift wrapped to him. And you really can’t send him to the end of the bench because there is absolutely no situation I want him coming in to pinch hit. Just to give away an out? At least with davis, you could send him down to AAA because you knew he was young enough to take some coaching but where hank is right now is pretty much the career arc you would expect.
I think I’ve figure out the solution…
Fake injury.
It wouldn’t really be that fake. He looks exhausted or hung over or something (this is not a drinking problem reference – he actually looks terrible in the face). But this would be a way for him to make a graceful exit from the rangers without losing face. He’d be in the clubhouse, part of the glory, etc. Isn’t this what the the sox basically did with frank thomas (not that i like kenny williams, but still)? Otherwise, the guy has no place on the team. Can’t even say he’s here for veteran goodness since he hasn’t been on a playoff team. I just fear that if you outright DFA him, the face (and probably a few others) would get kind of mad.
fake injury. it’s got to be what everybody in the ranges organization (possibly including Hank) wants to happen. hank needs to take the initiative here and complain about…hamstrings? maybe tug at his groin after a long stretch?
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Blalock and Guardado both need to develop hamstring and groin issues that will keep them out for the rest of the season.
Maybe Hank can say he’s got TOS in his other shoulder, and say he caught it from sharing a soda with Salty.

This seems silly, but I wonder if there really isn’t something to that.
Brad Ausmus stuck with the Astros for years in no small part because he was tight with Bagwell and Biggio, and they wanted him there and made no bones about it.

see here
Washington said that he writes the lineup cards out, but did acknowledge that other members of the organization had a hand in the Kinsler move, which cleared the way for OF Julio Borbon to hit leadoff against right-handed pitching for the time being. Kinsler will hit leadoff against lefties. And if Borbon is sent back to the minor leagues when OF Nelson Cruz is activated mid-week, Kinsler is expected to go back to the leadoff spot.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

Something else to consider with that
I don’t think that Washington wanted to test things with Kinsler by bumping him down. Having it be an order from on high allows him to appear to be in Kinsler’s corner, and Kinsler can go brew with Young about how Daniels doesn’t understand what it’s like to be a player but be happy with his manager.

Hank Blalock has been the definition of replacement level 1B this year, and he’s been as bad since Davis was sent down as Davis was the first three months.

When Davis was mercifully shipped to OKC
he couldn’t hit a 90 mph fastball down the pipe. He was in a 4 for 28 with 11 Ks when JD (or somebody) pulled the plug. Davis’ existence on the team ahead of Blalock when he didn’t earn it was killing the chemistry of the room because everybody knew Davis didn’t deserve the playing time he was getting.
The instant this team stopped the madness and quit platooning Hank, the team turned their fortunes on a dime, ended the June Swoon and are 25-15 since.

BUT HANK SUCKS!!!!
I have wanted to support him for a long time but come on, you are defending the absolute worst hitter on the team for the last month or more, and his defense hasn’t been that great either. We win the game Friday night with Davis on first base, he stretches to make to huge double plays in that game that Hank barely steps out to get to. Hank is offering absolutely nothing between the baselines.
and I hardly think
that any team chemistry created by the move would be hurt by making the move back to Davis at this time. Unless, of course, you think Hank would turn into a whiny little bitch if he got benched.
So your position is...
…the Rangers are winning now because the chemistry is better with Hankles instead of Davis playing first base, even though Hankles has been just as bad as Davis since Davis was sent down?

Even Jen can see
putting Daivs in and sitting Hank would be an improvement
What is crazy is this Rangers team has a chance to be even better, right now. Just bring back Chris Davis and plop him back at first base.
God love Hank Blalock, and he certainly has been better than I ever expected this season, but he was 0-for-13 in this series and is hitting .175 in August with an OBP to match and he hasn’t drawn a walk since before the All-Star break.
You have to think a re-confident Davis would be better. And even if not, if the offense is a push, you take Davis for the defense.
And Jen uses stats even less than Ron. Comeon.
AND she says Hank is having a BETTER year than she expected and we need to get him outta there. Yet Hank is WORSE than you predicted and you want to keep him….. hmmm

Admit it, Hank has been just as bad, except for about a 1-2 week stretch.
Please tell me how a guy who is struggling as badly as he is, sees only 7 pitches in 4 AB’s? Have you even watched the games of the last week or two? Can you honestly say he has been even slightly productive?

Why would I admit it if it's not true?
Blalock was a monster from July 1- AS Break and coming into the Boston game he had an 8 game hitting streak (modest 9 for 30 with lots o’ pop). The other three weeks plus have been crap but he’s chipped in with some big hits despite the ugly numbers.
Hank took an untimely 0 for 13 this series but he hit the ball well his last two times at the plate.
His presence on the roster isn’t hurting the chemistry of this team and the same cannot be said for CDavis when he was here throughout the season but especially in June.
When Davis was here he went thru something like a 7 for 60 with 27 K’s from mid May to early June AND that was when the heavy platoon of Blalock started.
It didn’t play well in the room because everybody knew Davis had been hideous since Spring Training began (and was on a pace to K 266 times / 162 games in the regular season) and didn’t play well on the field because teams started running LH pitching at us and Davis never did hit LH pitching this year.
That’s why we went 11-15 in June and scored fewer than 100 runs.
When the platoon of Blalock ended, the fart hanging over the team left the room and a not so coincidental 25-15 record followed.
It’s not a tough concept to understand.

20-9 in May

11-15 in June

That doesn't even make any sense
They have a better record since that happened, but Davis’s replacement at first base is sucking as much shit as he did, but the team is still winning and must be winning as a result of Davis being sent down, so it must be the team chemistry instead.

This team’s brass seems to have a pretty good monitor on chemistry in the room.
When there’s somebody who is not a good teammate or whose performance is seen to be as a detriment to the team, those players are removed from the roster.
See Sidney Ponson, Vicente Padilla and Chris Davis.
You hate it but Hank F in the line-up every day is working and the team would be foolish make monumental changes in personnel or chemistry at this time (Davis for Blalock would constitute a monumental change) especially when the player you want back up was as terrible and overmatched in The Show as CDavis was this year.
You see, the problem with making a change like that is that CDavis was a worse player than Hank F has been this year.
He’ll get his chance next spring and I’ll be rooting for him but we’ve got a post-season berth to nail down this year.

You have zero evidence...
…that Davis’s performance was hurting chemistry.
Given that Hank F.‘s performance over the past month has been worse than Davis’s performance, it must be hurting team chemistry, if you are correct.
What about nice guys who have sub-.200 OBPs, like Hankles over the last month?
Still think Nolan needs to sign him to a 3 year, $30 million deal?
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 16, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Since July 1 when the Hank was given the every day gig, he’s rockin a .250 BA to go with a .269 OBP over about 165 ABs… Not a far cry from what CD did over his 275 ABs…
I’ll be damned if he isn’t carrying This Thing…
Why would we give Davis another chance next season
If he’s so bad for team chemistry, why would we ever bring him back to the locker room?

they were winning, yet getting very little from Davis;
and they are winning, yet getting very little from Blalock.
So, it would seem to me they are winning in spite of lack of production from either guy. The difference is, Davis may actually have fixed some things and gotten better; Hank has gotten worse with more exposure.
Chemistry may be like momentum-it is as good as tomorrow’s pitching(and defense).

Because you don't want to.
You have absolutely no evidence that team chemistry is better now with Blalock than it was then with Davis. None.
You can cite no relevant statistics to show that Blalock has been anything but a terrible player at first base. Absolutely horrible.
All you cite is our record, which is what it is for so many other reasons than one fucking first baseman playing every day. What about pitching? What about defense? What about kicking the shit out of the Angels, Holland having two fantastic games, Hunter dominating, Borbon/Andrus turning it on, Face playing well, or any one of a dozen other things?
Our record is better since the switch, but there is absolutely no rational way to connect the two things as one causing the other. None.
And if you really want to get into it, if Blalock has been so terrible (which he has, you cannot deny) and our record has been good, how much better would we have been without him?
I’ll say this, I think we win Friday night with Davis rather than Blalock, because Davis sells out to stretch for that throw in the ninth.
Blalock is terrible and you’re a joke. Get over both things because I doubt they are a-changing.

Did you see those at-bats?
In one of those ABs he tried to yank a high and outside fastball down the right-field line and he hit a relatively weak ground ball into the hole that Pedroia smothered.
The only decent swing he put on a ball was a solid fly-out to center.
Neither of those excuses an average of 1.75 pitches per PA over a ballgame.
Even Davis was doing more to wear the pitcher out by averaging 3 pitches, and atleast a strikeout was not a double-play.
Blalock has been piss-poor miserable all year.
And this coming from someone that thought he’d post a 300/350/500 line this year. Just let Blalock go. We could put Chris Shelton or Ben Broussard there and be better off at this point.

That bird is trying to ruin her credit.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
If someone had told me at
the beginning of the season, that on August 16th, the Angels would have the most runs scored in baseball and the Rangers would have the fewest runs allowed in the AL, I would have laughed in their face and said, “that’s unpossible.”

Just read the post-game write up from TR for the game on Satday… says Kinsler was hit in the shoulder. I thought it clearly hit his helmet and dind’t touch his shoulder? Or am I wrong here?? heh..
‘The night ended on a scary note. Second baseman Ian Kinsler, who had a home run in his first at-bat, was drilled in the shoulder by Fernando Cabrera’s eighth-inning fastball.’
They said that on the radio pregame too.
It certainly looked his head to me..
the preceding post was a great success.
glanced off his shoulder
would be accurate. Did TR even see the game?

Better than a wet spot
for sure.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
who does not want Borbon to be sent back down to the minors?
I don’t. He and Andrus are fun to watch play.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I don't
Send Murphy down.

How about waive German
Why send Murphy down even if it is only for a couple weeks?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'm just tired of his lack of power, can't hit leftys and his mediocre to below average defense.
he’s not walking that much either. But DFA’ing German is more likely.

Might they keep Borbon
and jettison German? Five OFers and 1 DH for 4 spots in the lineup.

Borbon will get sent down until Sep 1
