The Rangers are not optimistic about signing first-rounder Matt Purke, who will probably head to TCU and reenter the draft in 2011 as a draft-eligible sophomore. The two sides are still more than a million dollars apart.

I really hope they get him signed
I think he has a chance to be very special and would bring another high ceiling LHP into the fold to follow Holland and Perez. Of course I’d love to get to cheer for him at TCU too, but the Rangers get first dibs.

...Fuck.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
Purke
If they are within $1 million, I suspect they’ll get him signed.

I guess he's not giving any ground from his Porcello talk
That really stinks, but at least they would get 14a next summer.

Our prospect ranking isn't going to be top 5 this year is it?
the preceding post was a great success.
Purke will be a Ranger by the end of the day.
This will not be Zito all over again.

You are correct
But the Rangers knew what it would take to sign Purke when they drafted him he was up front the whole time. I really don’t think the Rangers would have drafted him if they didn’t think they could sign him. Posturing is all it is. This deal will get done. The Rangers tried to get a better deal now they know they can’t they will pay him and move on to Scheppers.

Maybe Purke has upped his demands?
The Rangers may be offering Purke exactly what he said he wanted pre-draft. Who blinks first?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
If that is the case
I would bet Purke blinks first seeing how he delayed Frosh Orientation yesterday.

I doubt he's upped his demands
I think it’s probably more like he made reassuring noises when talking to them predraft but never gave away a solid number. That number, when finally communicated was higher than the Rangers wanted to offer. They’ll close the gap today.

The same thing was said about Smoak
JD said he didn’t think he’d get him signed and that went all the way to the deadline.
I think what will happen is that both sides last minute will agree to meet in the middle for the extra 500k.
well...
that is just the inherent problem with a deadline…
why would either side give in to the others demands before the last minute…there is absolutely no reason for either side to blink
both sit there posturing until the last minute and finally one side will give in to an extent
