LSB Signing Thread Part II
This is the original stuff from Dirk's first post:
Tonight's the night.
12pm Eastern is the deadline for signing all non-college seniors from this year's draft.
There should be a flurry of news coming tonight so I figured it be good to have one place to discuss all the news as it breaks.
Some general News so far (updated as I can):
* Cardinals sign 1st rounder Shelby Miller for 2.95 million bonus. Highest announced bonus yet. Good comp for Purke?
* A's sign 4th rounder (And 1st Round Talent) Max Stassi for 1.5 million bonus. Bad for us.
* D-Rays announce they won't be signing either of their first two picks. Um, wow. They spent big on some signability picks already, but this sucks for everyone involved, imo. But I'm sure your clients will thank you later, Scott.
* Heyman twooted that the Nats have offered Strasjesus 12.5 million, but there's still a gap.
RANGERS' Shit:
Matt Purke is the name on everyone's mind. Our 1st round pick needs to get signed today or he goes to TCU and we get a pick in next year's draft. Yuck'ems to that.
http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/foul_territory/2009/08/matt-purke-update.html
Just about 13 hours to go until the 11 p.m. deadline to sign 2009 draft choices, and the Rangers continue to negotiate with first-round choice Matt Purke. The left-hander has been in town since last week, getting ready for a possible freshman year at TCU and also taking a physical and attending Saturday’s Rangers game with his parents. He met with several members of the club brass, who believe a deal will be reached.
This dispatch came from general manager Jon Daniels late last night: “Not much to say right now. I think both sides would like to see him in a Rangers uniform, but we’re not there yet. This is the system we have in place, and as such, we didn’t expect anything before tomorrow night. Hopefully it comes together, but I can’t say for sure at this point.”
That’s about on par with the Justin Smoak negotiations from last year. That ended well for both sides. Purke, though, seems to have a genuine fondness for TCU, and the Tom Glavine fan has been given No. 47 for next season.
I’m not so sure Smoak had any desire to return to South Carolina for a senior year. So, the TCU thing is leverage. But not signing today and waiting until the 2011 draft is a gamble, especially considering some believe Purke could be in the majors in 2011 or 2012.
— Jeff Wilson
Then there's Tanner Scheppers, who isn't on tonight's deadline because of his senior elgibility-ness, which means he can be signed at anytime up until one week before next year's draft. Don't expect anything on him today.
We also have a number of other interesting players who could be in play tonight.
9th rounder Jabari Blash is a super uber toolsy OF from a Florida Community College. The fact that he hasn't signed yet is a pretty good indication he's asking for well above slot.
10th rounder RHP Thomas Lemke is a tall, lanky peice of projection out of an Arizona HS who is apparently looking for a mid-to-high six figure deal to sway him from college. He'd be a nice add, but who knows.
Then there's 32nd Rounder Reggie Williams, Jr., who I super heart cause I super heart pure CF'ers who can go get the freaking ball, and Williams has the best speed in the entire draft. He's expected to go to college next year, though. I'd put the odds of him signing tonight at less than 1%.

Q for Andy
Where did you have Purke on your draft prospect rankings?
by Conjunction on Aug 17, 2009 10:11 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The most recent list I could find...
Purke was #20. I’m trying to remember where I had him on draft day, but it was right in that area. The list I used on draft day is on my old laptop, so I’m not 100% positive, but it was somewhere between 19 and 22.

Official notes on Turner and Tate.
Per Jim Callis:
We have confirmed bonuses on two Padres signees. First-rounder Donavan Tate gets $6.25 million payable over four years under MLB provisions for two-sport athletes.
The Tigers have signed No. 9 overall pick Jacob Turner to a major league contract with a $4.7 million bonus (payable over six years, with $1.6 million paid in 2014) and a guaranteed value of $5.5 million. Depending on how quickly he reaches the majors, he could push the total value to nearly $7 million.
The raw bonus is a record for a high school pitcher.
I don’t have an official net present value as calculated by MLB, but it probably comes in around $5 million.
Turner getting a huge bonus + a ML deal seems kind of bad for us.
Yikesers…

Purke made a mistake. They threw four million at him, and he walked away. So, like most prospective pitchers, he will toil away in the college system, risk injury, risk declining ability, and – very likely – won’t see the better half of four million dollars again in his lifetime. Matt Purke has turned down a $4 million offer from the Rangers and will attend TCU… the Rangers did not sign their first round pick…They will get a similar compensation pick next year.
This is the first time in club history they have failed to sign their first-round pick.
Purke walked away from $4 million…a chance to pitch in his home state…a chance to be mentored by Nolan Ryan… a chance to pitch for a franchise on the upswing.
Instead he will pitch in the Mountain Conference for three more years…

Calculate the present value in 2 years of $4 million given to you today. He’s going to need around $5 million at the 2011 signing deadline to equal the offer he was given now in terms of present value.

Dumb move for an 18 year old kid.
Now he’s got lots of time to ruin his arm in the college ranks with little or no compensation when/if it happens.
Given the tendency of pitching arms to go bad, this is a really myopic gamble on his part.

Strasburg barely made a college team
Not sure what was with Tex in high school, but my guess was that he wasn’t thought of anywhere near as highly as he was after college. I guess I just don’t get guys like Purke who are top talents in the draft out of high school, get top talent offers, and still turn it down. If its an education you want, there’s always later. And if you’re smart enough to see the value in a college education, you are smart enough to invest 4 million dollars wisely.

Beavan vs. Purke
Beavan didn’t sign immediately, but he wanted to play pro ball, everyone seemed to know that. He was heading to some JUCO otherwise?
But Purke was either uber-greedy or confident he’ll make this type of money someday. He is a tall lefty. He needs some mechanical work for sure. Maybe he thinks TCU will help him mature, gain knowledge, and in 2011, he’ll still make decent bank as the economy improves?
I’m with your original comment, this is not the end of the world. We skipped out on an over-paid high pitcher. Never a bad thing in my book, less Porcello. My all-time favorite.

We get a compensation pick in next year’s draft in nearly the exact same spot in the draft.

and top 5 talent will surely be there and we will surely draft him b/c even though we wont get comp if we dont sign him he is the best?
no. this means 13a will much more likely be a drew meyer 2.0 than anything resembling top tier of the draft talent.

Talent always slides because of signability
Will it be another Purke? Maybe or maybe its another Shelby Miller or just a very talented player who should go right around that pick. All in all, the biggest loss is a year of development time which is something the Rangers can afford.

but if there are signability concerns
we can’t really afford to draft them with that pick.

Why not?
I can’t imagine the signability concerns are much worse than 4 million dollars. That’s one of the biggest bonuses in the draft’s history for a non top 3 draft pick. I’m pretty sure that can money whip whatever player to sign here.
Of course, a lot of things can change for better or worse with the Rangers financial situation.

Being "pretty sure" a player will sign is what got us into this situation
you have to be 100 percent sure a guy will sign, which almost always means not drafting top talent.

You can never be sure a player will sign
Purke is the outlier here. Most people in his position take the 4 million.

The A's were sure Jeremy Brown would sign
The Nats were sure that Storen would sign. Neither of those picks blow anyone away, but that is what may have to happen. I’m sure we will get someone better than Brown, but the line of thinking is the same. You make a pre-draft deal to ensure they sign, and the players that take pre-draft deals are usually not top talent.

You shouldn't waste a pick just because of that
The A’s went with Brown because they were broke and stupid. The Nats went with Storen because they had Strasburg to deal with too. There aren’t many players that go into the draft looking for 4+ million dollars. The few that do usually go in the top 10. If we can still spend around 4 million dollars on that pick next season, there is no need to make some huge reach because you’re afraid no deal gets made.

Ugh. No. This regime does not draft Drew Meyers.
Guys like a Brett Wallace or Ethan Martin or Aaron Hicks from last year or Jared Mitchel or Chad James or Alex White from this year all would’ve made sense in that spot had we not had the luxury of knowing we’d get a comp pick.
I mean, they don’t give comp picks for failing to sign comp picks, and what did we do with our comp pick this year?
Did we go cheap or did we press our balls and the base of our orginizational penis right up against the fucking wall and draft Tanner Scheppers?
Thinking we’re automatically gonna go with a cheap saey-safe no-talent just because the pick is unprotected is little misguided, imo.

He's certainly at risk.
Purke has one of those deliveries that the majority of the scouting community at least looked twice at. Some think he’ll be fine, but there’s a good number who loved his overall stuff, but hated the delivery.
