Rangers do not sign Matt Purke
Well, I had to delete the post with the original story that got taken down. T.R. now says Purke turned down $4 million and is heading to TCU.
Rangers get a compensatory pick next year.

i only hope he gets drafted by a horrible team
and gets offered less than 3-4 million so that he regrets this for a long time
say the KC royals and a 1.5 mil offer or the nationals
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.

Ehh
because I was pretty excited at the prospect of having another excellent draft and considering what some of the other prep arms got, I think 4 mill was plenty fair….Plus, I’m already in a pissed off mood from having to do defensive driving all night

Dunno but this gives Scheppers some leverage
no way the Rangers can’t sign both Purke and Scheppers.

I don't really care if I'm a bad person.
Turning down 4 mill (which just by scanning seems like that would make him the highest paid prep arm) doesn’t speak too highly of his character either…

It doesn't?
What does this have to do with character? You’re just bitter that he’s not coming to play for your team, and therefore you don’t want him to play for anyone else.
I don't care what his reasons are
There’s nothing about this negotiation that reflects on his “character” or merits a future arm injury. I don’t see the point in demonizing him…
Sure
that’s part of it. But it also makes him seem like a spoiled, egotistical prick

UNT's cool
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time there; couldn’t be happier with my decision. Tuition is comparatively cheap, housing is affordable, the campus is nice, the RTVF and Music programs are top notch.
Also, I’ve never followed college athletics, so I care very little when the football team craters.

Pretty sure he was
I seriously doubt he even knew who Purke was until he heard “Purke didn’t sign” and translated that to “JD failed to sign Purke and should be shot.”
What’s interesting is this: all “front office dumbassery” allegedly ended on that famed Glorious Day. Therefore, one of the following must be true:
a) If all dumbassery has ended, failure to sign Purke is not dumbassery. Therefore, Josey shouldn’t criticize JD for this.
b) If this is indeed dumbassery, then JD cannot be responsible and thus can’t be criticized. After all, Nolan took away all of JD’s power and Nolan himself is responsible for all decisions good and bad.
c) For it to be JD’s fault, then Nolan must not have actually taken away all of JD’s power.
Whether A, B, or C, Josey is still wrong. The flaws in his logic are so glaring that it’s really becoming too easy to shoot holes in his posts.

At this point I'm convinced he's nothing but a schtick machine
He gets off on the responses he gets to his JD-bashing. He probably still hates the guy like I still hate Ron, and may actually believe most of his shtick, but he mainly posts his rediculous criticisms just to incite the long flamerwars that pollute morning threads.
His latest thing of course seems to be for Hank Blalock – and I’m half-convinced Texas_Dawg is an alter-ego he created to assist himself in giving Blalock virtual blowjobs.
I don’t see why people respond to either one anymore, because they’ve gotten so blatantly transparent it’s not even a real act for them anymore.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
Yeah, same here
In the old days you could actually have a legitimate argument with him. He believed JD sucked, others didn’t, and the discussion could fly back and forth about the merits of JD’s various transactions (even if Josey dismissed every single prospect/draft acquisition as a worthless “magic bean”). But now, it’s very clear JD doesn’t suck. His trades and drafts have put together a scary good collection of young talent and a major league team that is clearly on the rise. It’s a tough time to be Josey.
I became convinced he was just a shtick machine yesterday morning on the Blalock/Smoak/Davis poll thread. His response to the statistical merits of each was simply “I didn’t see 25-15 listed up there”. Nobody in their right mind truly believes that playing Hank every day is the singular reason for the club’s record in the last month and a half, and nobody would seriously cling to that as their argument for playing Hank.

Well, he has to approve all the big decisions, right?
And Hicks controls the money. So I’d say it’s on both of them- particularly since Nolan said he had a good idea of what it would take to sign Purke- before it’s on Daniels.

Apparently he had a change of heart after being drafted and reversed direction.
He went from someone who was saying he’d have to be bought out of college to someone who absolutely wanted to go to school and wouldn’t even listen to offers.

They have graciously provided the ability to buy an upgrade and use it, but you have to do a clean install not an upgrade.

If you are looking at this as a business decision
it is the dumbest move ever, period. He has no control over his health, and the track record is horrible for guys making this call. The only way you can rationalize it, and the only way he needs to rationalize it, since it’s his life, is that the money is not what he’s basing his decision on. Now, if he were willing to sign for, say five million or six million, this was a really, really dumb decision.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 18, 2009 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions
Yup. It's hard for me to characterize his decision and what it says about him
without knowing what aspects of it were most important to him (and his family). Hard as it is to imagine that playing baseball at the highest level and earning as much money as possible weren’t the two most important factors, without knowing or having heard from the kid, it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).

TCU is a good education, but you can buy your way into better schools w/ $4mm. And college is an absolute blast (take it from someone who took it for all it’s worth) but it ain’t $4 mm good.

Daniels said the silver lining is they have another pick in next year’s draft, but he’d rather have signed Purke. Daniels said the talks were amicable and went close to the 11 p.m. signing deadline.
Daniels said not signing Purke will have no impact on the team’s ability to sign supplemental pick Tanner Scheppers, who wasn’t subject to the trade deadline because he has no more amateur status.

Okay, which of the following is more disappointing?
1) Failure to sign Purke
2) Hurley’s injury
Hurley's injury
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
I think I'm more dissapointed at missing out on Purke, myself
I like Hurley, but we’ve more than gotten by without him this year.

I really don't know
I kind of think Hurley might wind up a reliever because of his injury, myself. Which is fine, but I’d still rather have the high school lefty with the high ceiling than the 4/5th starter coming off an injury.

I'll go with number 2
A healthy Hurley would have been awesome for this team and I think we’d be in better shape right now with him in the rotation.
Losing Purke hurts, but I definitely wouldn’t want to pay anywhere close to what he wanted and I think Scheppers is the better pitcher so as long as we sign him, it should be ok.

How do these kids turn down millions?
Do they come from money or do they get insurance policies to cover themselves? I’d do damn near anything for $4Million… all these kids have to do is play baseball. I really don’t get it. They obviously haven’t had to work for a living.

the value of 4 million dollars on what it can do for your lifestyle is kind of amazing. He could honestly just sit on 3 million of that and likely live off of it for a long time if he doesnt make it in baseball.

I'm saying that...
at today’s rates, a risk-free return doesn’t yield much.
"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin
To clarify...
he gets a $4 million bonus, after taxes let’s call it $2.3 million. He buys a house and car, let’s call it $2 million. He needs 3% return to get $60k a year, which is around the median income.
Just doing a search for active treasuries on the AMTD website, 2 year maturity gives a coupon of 1.0%. Of course, the yield to maturity is actually 0.879%. That’s as close as you can get to a risk-free return.
Stepping up the risk/return ladder, AAA munis are yielding 0.62%, giving you a tax affected yield of, I dunno, let’s call it 1.77% (at a 35% tax rate).
Stepping further up the risk/return ladder, A munis are yielding 1.18%, giving you a tax affected yield of 9.6%. Of course, A bonds have significantly higher risk.
Anyway, without dipping into principal, $4 million isn’t going to have you farting through silk.
"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin
And if he doesn't get drafted in the top 3 or 4 picks
two years from now, it’s the same $4 mil. If something happens and his value declines or his career ends before it starts, it’s NOT even the same $ 4 mil. To add dimension to the value of $4 mil, without a baseball career, at $150k per year, it’ll take him over 26 years to earn $4 mil. And he’ll have to pay income tax on that too. I hope that “college experience” is worth it.
And we havent even considered how much
Obama will have raised taxes in two years. Since he is spending a gazillion jillion dollars a day and has assured us that he wont raise taxes on us po’ folks, only on those evil people making over $250,000 a year, I reckon by two years from now if he signs a $4 mil contract the government will let him keep about $1.36 of it.

after 2007
and even last year i guess this just a pendulum swing back in another direction. disappointing, but not the end of the world. we have lots of good 18-19 year old pitchers to populate our system for the next few years.
it does seem like a ridiculous decision economically though. even if he were able to get $6 million in a few years it’s still an incredible risk for a very marginal benefit, one which might be nullified if it takes him longer to reach the bigs than it would have had he signed.

So whats the big deal?
He’s a good pitcher and one of the ones I hoped we would get, but still he’s only one pitcher, HS at that. We get the pick next year and perhaps with our outstanding scouting department we select a better player with the pick. Maybe we use our pick next year to get a Type A hitter or pitcher this off season because we know we have another first rounder. All in all, its not that big a deal. If it is a recurring theme that we don’t pony up for our picks then it’s a bad sign, but its not.
The big deal
is that they are less likely to get someone in Purke’s class with the pick next year. I’m not devastated, because I wasn’t completely sold on Purke, but that’s not a good thing.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 18, 2009 1:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Why are they less likely to get someone in Purke’s class? The reason he dropped is because no one thought he was a good bet to sign, and he didn’t. We took a chance that didn’t work out, but next year who is to say that another player that doesn’t slide because of signability issues. There were plenty of players this year and in past years who have slid because of money and there will be again next year. That doesn’t mean we should pick a guy who slides or a guy that doesn’t because we think we can or can’t sign someone. We should weigh the risk/reward again and make our pick. Our history has shown we have been successful doing this and that this single pick was an aberration.
The problem is we have to sign that player next year because we get no compensation for him
so you have to pick a player you are 100 percent sure you can sign. That means not taking chances on guys that fall because of signability, because by definition they are going to be tough signs.
The Rangers have rolled up the welcome mat and bludgeoned the Angels with it. - Josh Lewin
We also have two picks next year
So we have options. Make our “safe” pick that we can sign for sure and we can still take a chance with our other pick. Or we could get that Type A FA and still make a “safe” pick with this pick. I have faith in our scouting department that we won’t flop on our face in next years draft. In reality the draft is a major crapshoot anyway and there is no way to know if the guy you paid big bucks to will pan out any better than the guy you took because he would sign for slot.
Well put
I wasnt ulta high on purke going in, and still felt nervous about him signing. But theres not great odds they get upper talent at that spot next year. All we can do is hope another smoak situation happens (which isnt bloody likely)

from a purely business standpoint I just don’t see the sense of turning this down.
- Because of the time value money, a dollar you earn today is worth more than a dollar you earn tomorrow, and much more than a dollar in 2011. If Purke goes on to succeed at TCU and gets $6 million in two years, that’s not truly a $2 million because you have to discount that gain to accurately compare the present value of the two options.
- There’s tremendous risk associated with this move. Forget the possibility of injury — as many have stated, the kid could just not develop. There are simple formulas where you input the chances this guy gets hurt or regresses and you get the money value you’d need in order to take on that risk. I bet that number’s pretty high.
- And someone can help me here, but: doesn’t this delay the kid’s entire baseball life cycle by two years? Won’t this mean that he’ll reach his arbitration years two years later? That he’ll be eligible for free agency two years later? I know that he could (did?) try to negotiate a major league contract or a spot on the 40 but I get the sense those are pretty rare.
I don’t know if it delays it a full two seasons, but it certainly delays it.
He is certainly taking a huge risk, one that I certainly wouldn’t take or advise my son to take.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 18, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions
from a pure business standpoint
this decision is about as bad as it gets. In terms of value, he likely cost himself a good 2million dollars. Heck, even Mike Leake, the 2nd best college pitcher got around 2.4 million or something.
Throw in all the present value assements, risk factors, and from an economic sense he’s really netting himself an incredible loss in value, value that isnt gonna be made up in any sort of future development help that college coaching/experience might give him b/c the coaching and experience in the minor leagues by all accounts would be significantly better over the same period.
the only benefit he is gaining is the so called “college experience” but how much of an experience can he really get when he’s pretty much practicing and playing ball full time?
again, i wanna punch this kid and especially his advisor for turning this down.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
I'm not that worked up over it
They took a shot at a guy they thought was a value pick at 14. They offered him a bunch of money and he didn’t take it. We still get the 15th pick next year, where we can take a college pitcher who will be easier to sign and likely will get to the majors quicker than Purke would have anyway.
High school pitchers are extremely risky. Given the strength of the system, I understand them taking the shot, but I also understand them not going higher than they did to sign him. I don’t think there’s any reason to blame Nolan, JD or anyone else. They took a shot and it didn’t work out, but the rules work in our favor (with the pick we get next year).
God screwed us
When a peer told me that other teams were scared off from top pick Matt Purke after being told that God is “guiding his negotiations,” I told my buddy that if it were so, God would want a soul in the bargain, and the Rangers had already sold theirs.

Although, I would rather see him as a Ranger how can you fault him for not wanting to play in one of the most beautiful college ballparks at Lupton Stadium and giving up the college life of partying. Some remarked that you can always go back but truth is how would you react if you showed up to a college party and you were about 6-7 years older than the other people that were there. Also, if he wants to go to TCU he should go now since there is hardly any “non-traditional” students who go there (people who are older than 25).

Did I make this up
Or did the Astros fail to sign all of their first 7 picks from last years draft? If so, man life sure could be worse for us.
Two years ago
I don’t remember the exact number of picks though.
I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.
Whetever. Could very well have been a 4-million dollar bust.
Doesn’t want to come to a long-term contending team for WAY above-slot money? Fine. We’ll sign up Scheppers and go with our 20 other prospects. Until we find someone just like him in next year’s draft, sign him, and watch Purke go in the 6th round or something two years down the line. Go Rangers.
Fuck him
I’d sign a 10 year contract for 4 million to go to Huntsville. Bitch is gonna be a bust a regret never signing this thing. I could care less, about some could be HS kid in 3 years pitching in AAA. The time is NOW!
First place Texas Rangers!
Oh well
The final kicker is this kid’s going to be pitching like 40 minutes from the BBiA. He’s already made a celebrity of himself – now he’s going to be a pariah. For whatever reason, people (and I won’t be one of them) will want to see him fail miserably at TCU.
There is such little chance that he improves his stock, that he’s now a long shot. Good luck to this kid – he’s going to need it.
If everyone is so convinced that Purke is going to be a bust and his arm will fall off...
…then why are you upset the Rangers didn’t sign him?
I’m upset too, but the bitching and moaning in this thread is a little embarrassing…
The ultimate irony will be when his buddies want to go to a Ranger playoff game
and he can’t go b/c he’s living on a college budget.
You guys are sad.. Wishing bad things for this kid is wrong. He made his choice and we have to live with it. Yeah it sucks but grow up.

I don't wish anything bad on him
I just think he is a douche, and by going to TCU rather than taking 4 mil, just proves my point.
I don’t get why some 18 year old is holding out for a payday bigger than 99% of most people ever see in a lifetime.
First place Texas Rangers!

why is it our jobs to wish long fruitful lives on retards?
I can't help it. I’m an asshole.

i wonder if he'd be garnering this much criticism from the masses
if he was playing for the Longhorns rather than the Horned Frogs.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
theres a pretty good amount of TCU fans on here....
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

there's a lot more though
that look down on TCU as a college choice.

Having read all this, I have one conclusion
The Rangers are culpable.
Purke’s commitment to his asking price gives you room for one conclusion: he wanted an education and a college life. He wanted it probably about $5 million worth.
Did anyone catch anything about his intellectual level (grades, National Merit Scholar, class president, etc)? I didn’t.
Maybe he’s a very bright guy. Maybe he sees the “real world” just fine and wants an education instead of working out, playing cards and jousting with groupies.
Needless to say, this bodes poorly for his ML future — those careers apparently require monomaniacal focus.
All of this is on the Rangers. This is all scouting, and scouting the player definitely needs to be monomaniacal on the Rangers’ end.
All you can say about Matt Purke is did what he wanted. Genuine desire is never more obvious than when you make a sacrifice. And actually I remember having a lot in common with him at 18…going to college and forgetting the world was something I looked forward to all summer.

He could have done all that
and still collected lots of money and gone pro. He can go to college anytime.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I see that as kind of a twist in his overall strategy
If he wanted college above all, he’s probably OK with whatever money’s waiting when he gets out, whether it’s in the 1st round or the 10th.
I mean, literally, this guy did only what he wanted. We can conclude this because he was not bought at a huge offer price.

Did you turn down 4 million to go to college?
And if Nolan talked to Purke and gave the go ahead to draft him because he felt like they could sign him then isn’t the fault squarely on Nolans shoulders?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Because Nolan talked on the phone instead of JD?
The Rangers org, Hicks on down, signed off on this decision. But if Nolan’s phone call was the sum total scouting portfolio for this player, well, that truly sucks.
But can we safely conclude the org had a little more contact with a projectable lefthanded pitcher from just outside Houston, Texas? I think so.

Apparantly Noland agent was the same guy/group advising Purke
Which means Nolan probably made a phone call and had the insight on what it would take to sign him and passed that along to the rest of the FO when the decision time came. Im not saying Nolan overruled everyone but I do believe it was his imput that eased the signability concerns that caused Purke to drop to us in the first place.

Whatever.
You can’t plan on utter irrationality.
The kid may truly, honestly, genuinely value 2 years at TCU as being worth several million dollars. (I suspect he simply thinks he’s worth what he was asking and is confident he won’t get hurt in 2 years.) And if so he truly, honestly, a genuine dumbass.
He’s doubling down and hitting on 20. And he has a dad (who said his going to TCU was “God’s plan”, fwiw) and advisers dumb and irresponsible enough to support that call.
This isn’t turning down the money to go serve in the military, the Peace Corps, as a missionary, etc. Someone choosing that? Well, hey, money just ain’t their thing. And that’s cool. But this isn’t that… or anything close. It’s a kid gambling for more despite having an incredibly good offer. Whatever glorified community college he’s chosen to go to is irrelevant. That’s just a place to sit till he goes back to the table.
This isn’t on the Rangers at all as there was nothing to suggest the kid was utterly irrational and surrounded by equally irrational and irresponsible people.
