Texas Rangers trade for Pudge Rodriguez

Jeff Wilson says that the Rangers have all but completed a deal with the Houston Astros that will bring Pudge Rodriguez back to Texas.

More details as they become available...

UPDATE -- T.R. Sullivan says the deal is for two "mid-tier" prospects, and that Pudge will be the backup to Taylor Teagarden.

UPDATE II -- If you recall, in late July, 2001, the Rangers traded disappointing veteran free agent signee Andres Galarraga to San Francisco for Todd Ozias, Chris Magruder, and Erasmo Ramirez.  I'd expect the price the Rangers pay in terms of prospects to be something similar to that.

Will he be in a Ranger uniform tonight?!?

If not, when? Is this pending a physical?

I want to be there his first game here, regardless of whether or not he plays.

You have to wonder if our training staff is either

A.) That good, that they’re finding this problem, while other teams aren’t.

or

B.) Overdiagnosing

or

C.) Responsible in some way.

I’d have been happy enough rolling with Tea and Richardson, but if they decided they needed someone with more experience back there, especially down a stretch run and possibly into the playoffs, the Pudge is probably the best acquisition out there.

I do think that the team is stronger going into the playoffs with guys like Vizquel, Eddie, and Pudge on the roster, given its overall youth.

I think its because he's a catcher

and was never a huge HR hitter at the level of a McGwire, Bonds, or even Palmeiro. The reason a lot of writers liked him was because of things that steroids couldn’t help him with.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Plus, compared to the other high profile users, he never did anything to make folks dislike him

Bonds had a sorry, surly disposition to begin with. Palmeiro was always sort of standoffish and then wagged his finger. McGwire was arguably in good shape popularity wise until he refused to “talk about the past”. Clemens had been alienating fans since the 80s.

Meanwhile, everyone loved Pudge. The writers loved him because of his intangibles and catching ability. He was always a fan favorite and seemed to truly appreciate the fans. Because of that, both writers and fans are willing to look past what he may or may not have done. FWIW, some of the other likely users like Bagwell, Biggio, etc. fit that same bill.

According to Wilson’s column:

A source said Rodriguez will serve as the backup for Taylor Teagarden, who has assumed the starting duties with Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the disabled list. Saltalamacchia was placed on the DL on Saturday with arm fatigue and was told today by vascular specialist Dr. Greg Pearl that he has thoracic outlet syndrome.

Saltalamacchia, though, said that he will stretch and rehab the arm over the next few weeks and was told that he could play again this season.

“I’m going to play through it, and hopefully it goes away,” Saltalamacchia said. "He [Pearl] thinks that if I stretch it out and do the rehab, there’s a chance I can overcome it.

Salary

So even if it costs the Rangers $500k for the rest of the season for Pudge, at $25/ticket he only has to put 20,000 extra butts in seats. If you think he won’t you’re nuts. Not only is this a good PR move it will be a money maker. By the way, he is a helluva defensive catcher.

by Average Joes on Aug 18, 2009 12:59 PM CDT reply actions

With incentives, he is on pace to make about 300k 400k more

Im not sure if Houston has to pay some of that or not. Assuming we pay all of it, he’ll cost us about 900k for the rest of the year. If Houston picks up the prorated amount, it’ll cost us about 700k at the most

by AceJC on Aug 18, 2009 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

This is great...

I know Pudge is a shell of his former self. However just the fact taht my favorite Rangers player ever is coming back for a playoff run really puts the cherry on top of this season…at least so far.

Great boost for the team and the FO as well. Attendance should also jump, as I’m sure this move will be just as popular here as Griffey going back to Seattle. Nice move by JD.

Actually there kinda is

if Max isn’t fully healthy then are you really willing to roll with Teagarden (a health risk in his own right) and a 37 year old Pudge as the only two catchers availiable to you?

I think I would look for another option to drop from the 40 right now rather than Richardson. Option him down but give yourself the flexibility in case something happens

You think, what... he's gonna get claimed? Opt for minor league FA at this point in th baseball season?

There’s like a 99% chance he accepts the assignment and ends up staying in the system.

And, if not, there’s a million other Kevin Richardson’s in the sea.

It’s not like it’d be hard to put out an open casting call and get an AAA journeyman to come in here and back up.

Most teams like to reward their org soldiers so even if we had to call up another team and pay to get one of theirs in here for two or three weeks it’d likely only cost us cash or maybe a Hamburger at most.

Its just the convenience

Im not saying drop a good player for him. but if Salty is done for the year you can move him to the 60 day DL. If not then you can drop someone like Arias because if you drop Richardson right now and something does happen you’re gonna have to drop Arias or someone else anyway to add him back on. We have dead weight on the 40 right now that can go ahead of Richardson and if we don’t need him then we simply drop him in the winter when we need a spot.

Yeah i read that

Doubt it works considering the outcomes of our other TOS guys in the past. My point being we have other dead weight that we have less to no use for already on the 40 that we can get rid of instead of Richardson at this time, especially given our fragile state of catchers already.

I think the Astros understand the relationship between Pudge and the Rangers

Remember, they allowed Pudge to break the catching record at RBiA over the summer. I don’t think they’d begrudge Pudge an opportunity to come back to the Rangers.

Keep in mind

that Pudge also bypassed his agent years ago and made a deal directly with Ranger’s management so he could stay. Don’t under estimate his loyalty to the Ragngers!

I remember that.

Made me think very highly of Pudge when I heard about it.

Pudge requested this? Where did you see that?

I believe you, I just want to read it myself. If so, that’s awesome. And it confirms the kind of guy he is, and the true love he has for this lcub and its fans.

Maybe Pudge can do for us what he did for the Marlins

and OT, but the Vikings just signed Farve

Um, wow.

Awesome.

Maybe Pudge caught the ridiculous adulation Griffey’s been getting this year in Seattle and started thing to hismelf, “You know what? I bet I could go back to Arlington and…”

This is seriously so awesome.

Pudge is my favorite Ranger ever.

This is and incredibly happy moment for me.

Is there anybody here who can tell me

why we are the ONLY team experiencing this problem w/ Thoraic Outlet Syndrome?

I mean, I know it’s brought on physically.. but could it be something in the water? In the air?

I’m surprised this hasn’t been looked at closer by the media.

by cmkelly29 on Aug 18, 2009 1:59 PM CDT reply actions

Not a new concept or anything

But we have a specialist on retainer who is an expert on thoracic outlet surgery. I worry that “when your favorite tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. Albeit, TOS corrective surgery could conceivably fix a variety of related problems, including short or contracted vascularity, possibly even an affected area from a pinched nerve, etc.

FYI......

Definition
By Mayo Clinic staff

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a group of disorders that occur when the blood vessels or nerves in the thoracic outlet — the space between your collarbone (clavicle) and your first rib — become compressed. This can cause pain in your shoulders and neck and numbness in your fingers.

Common causes of thoracic outlet syndrome include physical trauma from a car accident and repetitive injuries from on-the-job or sports-related activities. Even an injury that happened long ago may lead to thoracic outlet syndrome in the present. Sometimes, doctors can’t determine the cause of thoracic outlet syndrome.

Treatment for thoracic outlet syndrome usually involves physical therapy and pain relief measures. Most people improve with these conservative approaches. In some cases, however, your doctor may recommend surgery.

I think that's a valid point

But I read a good point here when the news first came out about Salty: perhaps TOS is more common in baseball than thought, and we’re catching it because we have a guy that knows what it is. Meanwhile, other teams are misdiagnosing it as something else. Allegedly, TOS is fairly common in the general populace, but it doesn’t really cause much of a problem for non-athletes and people don’t know that they have it.

you really think

Vallejo and Nevarez for 40 days of Pudge as a backup catchers is a good move? Could we get a package like that for Andruw Jones?

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Aug 18, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

It would be selling low

But it would also help with some upcoming roster crunches. I wouldn’t like it although I could see the rationale behind it. Its not anywhere near the Adrian Gonzalez fiasco but it would not be the best we could get for Vallejo.

we still have this offseason to deal with that crunch

guys like Kirkman, Phillips and Vallejo are prime candidates for trades this offseason. I just really like the idea of Vallejo serving as Vizquel’s eventual replacement as a utility guy.

by clark on Aug 18, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Apparently Vallejo can't play short

which pretty much excludes him as a Utility guy.
