He’s struggled the last month. He’s had an ERA of around 5.00, probably a FIP of around the same.
I don’t know that that means he’s so awful you have to release him, though.

Considering how terrible he is right now, I think the question is are you willing to gamble that he will start pitching wll again inside 6 weeks. I personally don’t think he will, since his stuff wasn’t that great earlier in the year when he was effective.

It is august 18th in a playoff run, and Jennings career numbers don’t suggest his ok FIP for the first 3 months is repeatable.
If there is a better option out there you cut him, he is not a future asset to this team.
And something tells me his numbers will work less after they are updated for toda.

well i wanted to upgrade him at the trade deadline
and i have no way of knowing what relievers have cleared waivers that we could still target.
in house our options are indeed limited, but even if we don’t have a great option to replace him that doen’t effect his outlook for the rest of the season.
and i keep mentioning smoltz, i’d still take him over jennings but obviously thats a whole other story with lots of argument to be had.

I looked at IS for relievers a little bit last year
50% is terrible, in the 30s for middle relievers is good. Closers are down under 25%.

the real issue is that Jennings, and moreso Eddie, build their numbers on low leverage situations. Eddie has been an incredibly low leverage pitcher all year. Jennings has pitched the majority of his innings in low leverage situations. The reason he has incurred the ire of folks is that he is God awful in high leverage situations. That can be seen in how awful he is at stranding runners. His numbers are propped up on pitching when the game isn’t on the line….and his reputation is coming from what he does when the game is on the line.
