Eddie Guardado to the disabled list, Willie Eyre recalled
Eddie Guardado is headed to the disabled list. Willie Eyre is being recalled.
I've thought for a little while now Eddie was going to have a d.l. trip. I don't think the Rangers feel comfortable with him being out on the mound right now, but they also don't want to cut ties with him. This allows them to let him rest his arm for a couple of weeks, stay with the team, and then activated him in September.
With Jason Grilli due back soon, along with Nelson Cruz, Eyre and Guillermo Moscoso are likely going to end up heading back to Oklahoma by Sunday.

Guardado
Guess that case of “shittypitcheritis” is finally bad enough to put him on the DL…
Officially gay for Neftali Feliz
CJ now the only lefty in the pen
This will really confuse RW. How is Eyre against lefties?

Can't be worse than Guardado

One down, two to go
I’d rather keep Moscoso up when Grilli returns and just dump/DL Jennings. Also got to figure out what to do with Blalock

I don't understand this
4.70 FIP.
Sub-4 ERA.
Walk, K and HR rates all about average.
LOB% above average.
BABIP is a tad above average.
LD% is below average.
So yeah, I don’t see how he’s been terrible this season.

What is his
inherited runners scored rate? When the manager uses him in situations with runners on base, and he lets EVERY SINGLE ONE score…it hurts the team, and loses games.
my better is better than your better.
As long as you bring him in with no runners on base he is decent
But he has been bad the second half and when brought in with runners on they are more than likely gonna score

…he’s been okay this year.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 19, 2009 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Not lately.
He’s a pitcher with underwhelming stuff that relies heavily on command and location to be effective. Recently, he’s missed spots consistently and gotten hammered. The pitch he gave up to Delmon Young was a center-square BP 88 mph fastball.
You can’t seriously say you’d be comfortable with him in a close game, would you?

I don't really trust him because he doesn't throw enough strikes, and isn't a strikeout pitcher
Dude throws barely over 60% strikes, and strikes out 16.4% (below average for relievers). As far as relievers are concerned, you can’t walk people unless you can strike a lot of them out as well.
Mathis is in the same boat, I don’t trust him either. He has those raccoon eyesockets
He was okay...
earlier in the year.
The last month or so he has been pretty bad though.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Jennings is untrustworthy of late (in the last month)
IP K ERA WHIP
10.1 9 6.97 2.32
It’s telling, too, imo, that he has only gotten 10.1 innings in the past month
4.70 FIP
Isn’t that pretty shitty?
"You can probably stick a fork in the Rangers' playoff chances for 2009." - AJM on 7/26 with the team 4.5 games out
Well if a 4.50 FIP for Feldman barely makes him a back of the rotation guy
I would guess a 4.70 FIP for Jennings makes him the definition of suck

He's been pretty bad in the 2nd half
His numbers are propped up by a great May.
If you are willing to say Blalock needs to go due to recent performance, you need to accept the same for Jennings.

Blalock had a couple of good months before the break that help his overall numbers
Same as Jennings. Both have been pretty bad since.

Really?
His ERAs by month:
april 4.26
May 2.61
June 3.66
July 3.38
August 7.94 (in 5.2 IP)
It’s all about perception. He’s had some bad innings with inherited runners, but nothing else in his performance is bad. If you want to be careful with putting him in there with runners on, ok. But your assertion that an early good start is skewing his numbers is false.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
ERA doesn't tell the story with him
Since most of the runs he gives up aren’t on his ledger. 56% of the runners on base when he enters a game will score (league average is 35%). That’s unacceptable from any pitcher who isn’t the mop up guy. That’s the 2nd worst on the team right behind Eyre. Only thing is that Jennings has inherited 27 runners this season while Eyre has inherited 3. That’s the second highest on the team behind O’Day with the 3rd most not being close.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Whatever
I don’t care for Jennings but I was just exposing the early season stuff he threw out there. Jennings has not been good but he’s not been so terrible either. Now that Guardado is gone I’d be fine with Jennings being dumped when Grilli is ready, I suppose.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
ERA doesnt give the complete picture for relievers
It is a stat that does not completely reflect their their performance because they are not charged with the inherited runners. You cannot disregard that.
No stat is perfect but how about OPS+ off the top of my head.

Well
BP’s WXRL (lineup-adjusted wins above replacement), Jennings is a tad under .4 wins added above replacement. He’s a little below average, basically.
Again, he’s been okay. Not great, but not terrible.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 19, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Jennings had 1.6 WHIP in July
and a 2.65 WHIP thus far in August.
He’s been freaking terrible since all the positive changes were made.

He's been godawful after the allstar break
If you’re going to wail away about Blalock (and deservedly so). Jennings deserves about the same treatment.

Jennings has a 6.75 ERA in 11 IP since the ASB
That’s bad.
Blalock has been playing every day and has been much, much worse than that.
And Jennings pre-ASB was a hell of a lot better than Blalock pre-ASB.

Hank v Jenning
Hank 1st half: 124 OPS+
Hank 2nd half: 44 (yipes!)
JJ 1st half: 88 OPS+
JJ 2nd half: 189 (yipes again!)
Seem pretty similar to me.

11 innings
11. I’m not defending Jennings, but you don’t make that judgment on 11 innings for a relief pitcher. He’s not good, but it’s not because of 11 innings that I know that.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Why do you think he only has 11 innings in the 2nd half?
Wash doesn’t have a lot of confidence in him either. But he’ll keep running him out there because he’s a vet and “everyone has to play”.

Compare Eddie's and Jennings numbers.
Eddie has a better BB/9, BAA, and WHIP. But Jennings has a better ERA (he’s giving up other pitchers runs), better K/9 (a plus), and doesn’t give up the long ball as much (a big plus). Now remember that we’re comparing Jennings to Eddie and they are almost a wash. Ouch.
yeah
Cumulatively he has been avg this year. Right now, he sucks. He has the 8th most # pitches for a RP in the MLs. His arm is dead. Time to DL him.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

Jennings is next. Put him on the DL.

That should keep him away for 2 months.

This would at least be a start...
Jones, who started one game at first in May, has taken ground balls at the position for much of the regular season, but he got a more intense full-scale workout on Wednesday. Manager Ron Washington acknowledged the possibility that 1B Hank Blalock could get an off day or two against left-handed pitching, but didn’t indicate he was contemplating a full-time platoon.

Need to hurry now and get Crush back before Sept 1 so he'll be eligigle for the playoffs...
…and we ARE going to the playoffs.
Ephesians 3:20-21...and I can only imagine
He'll be back at the end of the month
All we have to do is call him up on the 30th or 31st, option Mathis or whoever to OKC for a day then when the rosters expand bring them back up. Due to us having so many pitchers on the 60 day DL pretty much any pitcher on the 40 man roster is postseason eligible even if they aren’t on the August 31st roster
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

My only reservation is it’d be nice to have all hands on deck for Tampa.
But I can get on board with September. Let him get nice and used to his current habits. Numbers look gorgeous.

Walks
His sudden ability to take a walk is the most encouraging sign to me. The fact that he took 2 walks as the team was getting no-hit was a great sign. The old CD would press and turn in a 4 or 5 K night. It looks like the new CD is willing to show some disciple at the plate. Me likey.

Slightly OT, but related to the fact that JJ sucks in his current role
Does anyone know where to find the percentages on runs likely to score" for given situations? The ones like gamecast, etc show during the game (i.e. runners at 1st and 2nd, 1 out, 35.1% or somesuch)??
I’d like to try and recalculate some sort of “reliever ERA” where they actually get charged some sort of weighted runs allowed that accounts for inherited runners. I bet Jennnings ERA would go up 2 full runs easy.
