Minors 8/19
Here's todays pitching probs:
At 6 Namirez starts for Hickory.
At 7 Kris Benson starts for OKC.
Also at 7 Marteen Perez will start for Frisco.
At 8:15 Braden Tullis gets the start for Spokane.
At 9 Ryan Tatusko will start for Bakersfield.
When the AZL Rangers play tonight Richard Alvarez will likely make the start.
Go Rangers!

Hopefully this Marteen start is better than the last one..

My theory is that the Purke non-signing and Pudge signing is a bifurcation point in Rangers future history.
Is Purke an omen of increasingly bad to come? Or is Pudge a a return to the optimism of the mid 90s?

Is Perez in Frisco this evening or are they away?
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
Yay, MaPe...
hopefully a much better outing this time out.
I’ll guess 4, 2, 1, 1, 1, 5.

Another walk in the third
Looking at gameday, though, any of those 6 pitches could have been called strikes.
Has Perez had
a 1-2-3 inning in AA?

Crush
2-2 with a walk so far.
He needs to be back up and starting for the Rangers. We’re in a playoff race and can’t pussyfoot around the Blalock situation any longer. His replacement is hitting for average, getting on base, and hitting for power. We need that in the ML lineup.

I didn’t chart anything, so going off the top of my head here, but I would guess about 5 94s, 4-5 93s and 3-4 92s.

I was sitting on the side
but it also looked like he got squeezed a little on the walk preceding it.

quick hits
Paisano is coming alive at Backersfield. Morrison and Hogan were promoted from Hickory.
I am not too worried about Perez. He is still getting Ks. Greene and Samiento up to Frisco. Beau Vaughn back down to Frisco.
The hitter occupying Chris Davis’ body was 2-4 tonight with a BB.

random observations
Doyle: 24 Ks, 3 BBs in 18 IP so far, he and Tullis had a very good night for Spokane.
Alvarez continues to hold his own for a just turned 17 yr. old.
Ramirez showing signs of settling down, 5 Ks, 1 BB (and 1 HBP) in 3 IP before the game was suspended.
God, Benson sucks.

Speaking of which
David will have some thoughts and observations on the Rangers’ 2009 amateur draft class in the morning.

Cool
I agreed with his comment the other day (think it was him) that at least it’s nice they have 3 early picks next year now. The early returns on those who signed look nice, except for Mendonca, way too many Ks.

Is it strikezone judgment
or does Mendonca have a hole in his swing?

Perhaps both
he may have some of the same issues Davis does with pitch selection. He is certainly making solid contact when he hits the ball, 20 of his 49 hits are for extra bases. K’s in over a third of his PAs.

strikezone judgement
is probably harder to fix then a swing. If it is pitch recognition then I think that can be approve on. He is someone to watch but not get excited about.

At draft time
he talked about how much he thought he had improved his plate discipline in his last year in college. I’m very disappointed.

my gosh
who is this guy… I feel like I follow this stuff to at least know every name, but somehow this guy slipped by me.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I think the reason
you have not heard about him is because of his age. He turns 20 next month.

admittedly I don't know the AZL and DSL kids
as well as Spokane and above, but I know most of the studs…This kid obviously has a crazy K rate…can anyone tell me about his stuff?

crazy k rate AND
solid control and positive groundball ratio as well. Very nice looking stat line.

Monegro's stuff
Monegro popped onto my list several weeks ago during a statistical review of the system. Via email, Jason Parks indicated that Monegro has very good command of his fastball and a good feel for pitching though he doesn’t have much more than a fastball at this point. Parks said he is a legit prospect though it sounds like he might be limited to the bullpen.

Then teach him a change up
at Instructs and move him on up the pipeline. There is always a need for a high K RP.

also
is Chad Tracy a “prospect”? A third rounder out of a major university and the son of a coach, he obviously hasn’t exceded expectations, but he also hasn’t exactly sucked. His stats on the year look decent enough, especially the power numbers. Is he limited defensively to 1B? No OF at all? It seems like a strong start in OKC next year could put him back on the map a little bit…
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
not really a prospect
though this is kind of a breakout year for him. Originally a catcher, he is pretty much limited to 1B. He is Rule 5 eligible this year but I doubt he gets protected.

look at his '08 stats
he was pretty solid last year too. he has sort of steadily climbed the ladder, never putting up good enough numbers to enter any serious prospect discussions, but never putting up bad enough numbers to be completely written off. His power surge is really the only reason I brought him up, considering the dearth of power prospects in our system…
