Hate all you want

We can beat the Angels and Red Sox all day and all night, and it won’t matter one bit if we can’t beat the Twins and A’s of the world and the Red Sox and Angels beat everyone but us.

43 games left(1 out of WC) and we're done??

I’don’t think so….

Fells like we're in a heavyweight fight

We’ve won the first eight rounds, and now in the ninth round we get hit with a quick hard jab to the face and then a body blow to make us woozy.

There's the fact that our competition for the two playoff spots is beating everyone but us and the fact we're losing important games to teams we should be beating

A true playoff team would have gone 3-1 or 4-0 in this series and would not have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in two straight games.

I go through this every year watching the football team at my alma mater, Fresno State. Every year, they schedule games against good teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-10, etc. and sometimes they even win those games, only to lose to a team like Louisiana Tech or Utah State. Boise State, meanwhile, does not lose games to teams like La. Tech or Utah State and surprise, surprise, it’s Boise State that’s gone to the BCS and not Fresno State. Heck, even the one time Fresno State did actually beat Boise State, in 2005, Fresno went on to lose the last three or four games of the season (the first to USC by just a few points, the rest to teams like La. Tech and Nevada) and Boise State still won the conference. Boise that year lost the game to Fresno but took care of business against the crappy teams. Fresno beat the big boy but did not take care of business against the crappy teams, and thus, Boise took home the championship.

That’s what I see happening here. Texas beat the big boys (Anaheim, Boston) but can’t take care of business against the worse teams. Anaheim and Boston lost to the Rangers but have taken care of business against the worse teams. I see a pattern.

it’s ok folks, this guy’s smart. he knows pac 10 football. lets let him tell us that our favorite team sucks.

When did I ever say anything about knowing PAC-10 football?

Are any of the teams I mentioned in the PAC-10?

All I was saying with that post is that beating the one or two big boys but not the many little ones while the one or two big boys are beating the many little ones is a good way to be scheduling tee times in October. I’ve seen it happen before and I do believe I’m seeing it again.

For the record, I’ve followed the Rangers since 1991, which involves a lot of winning and a lot of losing. I can’t quote random stats from 1977 off the top of my head, though.

You are overreacting in the wake of a couple bad losses.

We are one game worse than our competition after nearly 120 games. That is basically a tie. With a lot of baseball left to play.

It is not that it hurt me (I mean who gives a shit) but late in the game the players looks dejected.

I haven’t seen the look of quit this year and I think is was because the game was absolutely forfeited by Wash. He is simply not learning from his mistakes. He uses Jennings night after night with better options sitting because he is a veteran. He pinch hits for the hottest hitter (batting.270 against lefty’s) with AJ (batting .220 against lefty’s) because he is a veteran. He leaves the starters out there night after night when signs of them wearing down are apparent to even casual observers. I understand the players relate to him but at some point in time (possibly last nite) they are going to realize he is costing us games. It is very frustrating for us but imagine what it is like for players who are giving their all and watching the same shit night after night. It is time for the FO to shit can these non performing veterans Blalock, Jones, and Jennings because we know if they are here, he will you use them regardless of any results or statistics that tell us otherwise.

Oh, the drama.

What a total load of crap.

I think the players are smart and professional enough to realize that there are 162 games in a season and sometimes you take bad losses when the starters, who for the most part have done well battling through problem spots all year, just don’t get the job done and give the bullpen a needed break.

Fortunately they aren’t into the completely ridiculous overreactions to a couple losses seen here.

It’s one game out in August with a ton of baseball left to play. Deal with it.

I'm concerned about the look of dejection and the quit I saw last nite.

I’ve seen that before but not this year. It is a bad sign and when you’ve seen it few hundred times like I have you will understand. But I certainly hope you are right, that after a good night sleep they come to the park re-energized, Holland pitches a gem and they roll off a 10 game win streak. Nothing would please me more!

I really hate playing the Twins

We always seem to have crazy things happen against them. Andruw Jones getting blamed for the loss is a joke. There were much more instances where we should of put way more runs on the board then we did in multiple innings. Once again we were a big hit of putting it away early. Looked like Millwood ran out of gas even though it was just an average almost great Millwood start besides the 6th AGAIN! What the heck is with us signing/calling up catches and having them have great games. If the Pudge hitting is real I’d say play him more than twice a week.

by LSU Ranger on Aug 19, 2009 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

Fuck that--this one's on Wash

Just because we have 67 wins, doesn’t make him immune to criticism. Managing the starter and the pen are the mgr.’s most important in-game decisions, and he screwed up with his late hook. He should take the blame for it in the press conference.

by davea on Aug 19, 2009 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

He didn't.

Millwood is the ace, he said he had no thoughts about taking him out.

by Aquaman, Esq. on Aug 19, 2009 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Then Wash has his priorities out of line.

I believe Millwood would rather have been pulled and have a better chance at getting a win then staying in there until he tied/lost the lead. MIllwood was gassed. Every Ranger fan, including myself watched him throw meat in the 6th. Honestly, my wife even said something along the lines of “That guy looks tired out there right now. Is he the same guy who was in at the beginning of the game?”

Wash blew this one. The frustrating part is he did this last night as well. The pen has done a good job and he had O’Day, CJ, and Frankie available to finish off the rest of the 6th and on. Millwood is starting on the lower end of his prime and way above his usual innings for this time of the year. It’s Arlington, Tx and it was well in the 90’s all night. He pitched a great 6 1/3 innings and that’s all he should have seen. I hurt after these last two.

Maybe he should have pulled Millwood earlier.

But many times people here have been screaming for that this year he has stuck with the starter and gotten an extra inning or two more for doing so. Most of the time actually.

And it has been a huge part of the success of this season.

But of course only the losses are his fault.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 19, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Millwood struggled greatly(30+ pitches) in the previous inning. Wash should have at least had some one loosening, just in case.

Yeah...

working in the family law biz, one of the things to be aware of is that, for instance, the MMPI didn’t score correctly for black people, because feelings of persecution that are normalized in the black community are not in the white community. And since the MMPI was normalized with mental health inmates in Minnesota, that isn’t what is scored as “healthy” in the test.

But you would have to think that those feelings of persecution would be self-perpetuating.

Two very tough losses in a row...

that were almost as hard to swallow as the BoSox loss.

Ya know, it wouldn’t be so bad if someone else would lose from time to time as well. The Halos haven’t lost a fucking game (other than to the Rangers) since June. At least it feels that way. The BoSox seem to have pulled there heads out of their asses and now they can’t lose, even against Halladay. Even the Rays seem to win everyday.

There is a tough road trip coming up. The Rangers simply can’t afford to lose many games where they are winning by 4 or 5 runs. Especially when at home to a mediocre team. These games have to be wins. Hopefully they can turn things around starting tomorrow with Holland. A 3 game losing streak at home to the Twins before a big road trip would be very deflating. Could at least get a series split with a win tomorrow.

And for crying out loud can someone get the fucking runner in from third with less than 2 outs! That shit drives me crazy.

No, but he decides who plays and where they hit on a day-to-day basis

I just can’t believe JD’s vision is to have a team in which Marlon Byrd anchors the line-up and one of the team’s main TV analysts is calling him “tremendous”

by davea on Aug 19, 2009 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't understand why Mac calling him tremendous is an issue

Byrd is one of the team leaders and has done very well as a Ranger. As for where he hits in the lineup, I think we’d all prefer he hit a bit lower in the lineup but that doesn’t mean he’s a horrible choice. People are getting on Byrd as if he’s some huge problem right now. The bottom line is that he is far from it. He went 2-4 tonight with a double and triple. Last night, he went 1-4 with a walk. The day before, he went 2-4 with a double. In the month of August, he’s hitting .303/.364/.439. You’d like more power from the number 4 spot, but the Rangers aren’t getting much power from anyone now.

couple of notes from the game:

Borbon is one o the most exciting players to watch in a long time, and I think he was only on base once
I don’t know what the feeling like was on here but I heard a ton of Wash bashing in the stands for not taking out Milly earlier, for not even having anyone loosening in the 5th or early 6th, and for pinch hitting for Borbon, for some reason I have no confidence Jones can make contact vs. a lefty
Carlos Gomez is a douche in the mold of Tex
Great turnout on a Wed. even if it was just for Pudge
Blalock actually looks decent against offspeed pitches but the fastballs make him look
silly, which is pretty scary if you ask me

by blueballlefty on Aug 20, 2009 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

Douche is not the word to even start describing Gomez

I love how he crowds the plate with his elbow gear and then when he gets an inside pitch on him, he flails away and gets up all angry like his little bitch ass is going to do something. He did it a couple times last night with Feldman and once when Milly pitched him inside. If you crowd the plate fine, you’re going to get pitched inside. Accept it. Piece of smay.

and the pitch was barely inside but he almost ran into it. He then preceded to bow up like we were throwing at him, also when Pudge faked a snap throw he freaked out and right before he got to the bag he stood up like some dude who just got punked but wanted to look cool

Fans yell for pitchers to be pulled at the first sign of problems every single time.

When Washington sticks with the starters, keeping with the whole Nolan Ryan theme of this season, and they settle down and get through another inning or two, well, hey, good for the pitcher. But in the minority of times when they haven’t, well, fire Washington… that dumbass who can’t speak English, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. blah blah blah blah…

Gotta love how that works.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 20, 2009 7:31 AM CDT up reply actions

There are appropriate situations to have a long leash.

Your pen is tired (all the good relievers were available.. used CJ anyway), you have a big lead (not really), etc….

Yesterday for example i put no blame at all on wash. I think you are right in that fans generally want a pitcher pulled constantly, but there are in fact situations where its warranted. Last night wasn’t the worst decision ever, but eh, not handled as well as it could have been imo.

Whats the harm in having o’day ready at the beginning of the inning rather than getting him up when the damage is done? Millwood was clearly struggling the previous inning. If he gets it together and puts up the inning grreat, but when youve got the tying run on base and your best bullpen guys lined up and ready to go… hand it over.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 20, 2009 8:12 AM CDT up reply actions

this is August

not May. Two guys have been called up to freshen your bullpen. He needs to have a shorter leash.

Millwood walked 3 in the 5th and I believe his pitch count was up in the 90s to start the 6th. He should have been gone after the Cuddyer 2B. Bring in Eyre then. (I would have preffered Moscoso.)

That’s why I think Wash should have pulled Millwood- he was having trouble the previous inning, and when he kept putting guys on base, that told me he was done for the night.

The adage “the hitters will tell you when a pitcher’s done” looked very appropriate last night.

And FWIW, I think Wash has done a pretty good job this year, he’s definitely my candidate for AL MOY right now, and I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of the KKK or the Communist Party. But I also think Wash blew it last night by leaving Millwood out there too long. If Wash has a fault, I think it’s occasionally trusting his players too much.

Baseball Prospectus said that Wash's management of the bully

was his weakness last year.

I wouldn’t entirely blame Wash’s mismanagement of the bully in the three losses this week as the primary reason the team lost but said mismanagement was a contributing factor.

Frank2 should have been pulled when the Bosox went up 5-4. Given his numbers in back-to-back games, it’s questionable that he should have even been out there.

Feldman & Millwood were both left in too long the last two nights. Going to Jennings (batters hitting over .400 against him in August) on Tuesday was a bad call as well.

diamond dave, The analogy I've used all year with Wash is that he's the drunk driver

who usually makes it home safely. The fact that he made it home doesn’t mean the decision to drive was a good one. The last few nights, the manager didn’t make it home safely.

I’m not worried at all about Blalock. He hasn’t been good for most of August but just when he looks like he’s about to come out of it, he barely misses a dinger (last week in Cle or Sunday v. Bosox) or somebody makes a great defensive play. Last night with a runner on 3rd and two outs he hit a rocket at the 2B. Getting walks the last couple of nights is a good sign.

The whole theme of this season has been the Ryan Doctrine:

Starters bearing down and going deeper into games.

Millwood and Feldman have had moments like the early problems in their collapses the last two nights numerous times this year. But instead of panicking like most fans would do, Washington has stuck with the plan, challenged his pitchers, and it has worked… helping keep the bullpen strong later into the season.

The last two nights the plan has failed. Maybe it’s time to rethink it (i.e. pitchers hitting that Texas summer wall and now needing quicker leashes?) Or maybe we should stay the course. I don’t pretend to have nearly the data and closeness to the situation that Washington, Maddux, Ryan, etc. have.

But I do know they have done a phenomenal job this year… clearly one of the best performances ever over dozens of other groups of Rangers leaders that have tried. One of those leaders gets a completely irrational lack of credit for that performance though.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 20, 2009 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Blame Maddux too then. He can use a phone as well.

Fwiw, I’m not saying Washington doesn’t make mistakes. I just find comical the hysterics and nearly universal hatred of a guy leading a team to the 2nd best record in nearly 40 years (despite that team being loaded with rookies, lost starters, and under-performing veterans). It’s a Purkean level of irrationality.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 20, 2009 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

There's a track record, TD. Wash led a really dumb team last year

and wasn’t much different in 2007.

Jackie Moore is here this year as the new bench coach but it’s Wash that gets credit for the team doing well this year and he still struggles with the bully.

This isn’t the call of Maddux. The pitching coach gives input but Wash makes the call.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 20, 2009 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

The Rangers bullpen

ranks in the top 3 in WPA, WPA/LI, and clutch according to fangraphs. Washington has leveraged his bullpen arms pretty well this year by those measures. He’s had a few mistakes in a few games, but overall his bullpen management has improved a great deal. This is due to having better options (O’Day, Grilli, now Feliz), better defense (keeping starters in games longer) primarily.

I think he was not as bad at managing the bullpen as it seemed last year, and he’s not as good as it seems now according to the measures I mentioned. He has a better group of guys to pick from, and they are getting a lot of help from the defense and rotation, so the bullpen is doing well.

That's an exaggeration

and if you’re going to take that tack, how many wins is he responsible for when he managed the bullpen well? also I have no numbers to back that up, just the last couple of games

I have been to it seems like he makes contact on offspeed pitches (fouling off, or in play) but when he strikes out it seems like its always on a 92mph+ pitch

He likes to swing at low and outside where his butt goes out as he bends over and tries to reach the ball.

I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.

Unless they're getting rid of Jones, I don't see the point.

J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.

Hit post too soon

Sheff would be an upgrade over Andruw (.368 wOBA vs .355, and he’s sporting a nice .378 OBP), and I’d swap them in a heartbeat. But the only possible role Sheff could fill (bench bat/DH) is already filled by ‘Druw and the Rangers aren’t cutting bait with Jones at this point, not after he become Rudy’s latest little star.

Geet rid of Jones.

Sheffield is quite a bit better.

So has Randy Galloway said anything more about his $2.3M MLB veto claim?

Or is he just going to scurry off to something else and pretend he never made the claim?

Has anyone pressed him on it?

RG seemed pretty rock solid and unwavering about the story

yesterday on his radio show.

He did say there was an email sent to him from somebody on the Rangers (not on the baseball side of things) that featured cursing.

He also said Hicks isn’t allowed to say anything about MLB bankrolling the team right now.

I guess that rules out the Ball Boy.

I don't think MLB is "bankrolling the Rangers"

I think the Rangers are just borrowing money against profits they will make at the end of the season

LOL.

“Featured” cursing. There was one word at the end of a rational explanation of the situation telling him to quit being an “a-hole” (by completely making things up).

Hicks isn’t allowed to say anything? LOL. Right.

What a total clown.

RG said the curse word wasn't personal

in nature but was instead “bullshit”.

How come Hicks or Nolan isn’t saying anything publicly about the RG column?
