Ricciardi: No-Trade Clause Never an Issue with Texas
TR Sullivan came out after the trade deadline the other day and said that Texas was told that Halladay would not have waived his no-trade clause to Texas. This morning, Nick Cafardo, posted an interview with Ricciardi in which Ricciardi states that that was not the case. Ricciardi basically contradicts a lot of what was reported about the trade process and says that there just wasn't a good enough offer on the table for him to accept for Doc. I am inclined to believe Sullivan that someone in the Rangers organization told him that. So, are the Rangers making up the fact that they were told this by Ricciardi? Was money really the issue and the Rangers just didn't want this to be out there as the reason? Or is Ricciardi just trying to cover himself since he didn't make a deal and probably won't be able to get as good a deal in the offseason or next year at the trade deadline? Who knows.
Here is the link for the Cafardo article:

not great logic on your part
because you think he’s on his way out, he doesn’t care about what other people think of his abilities?

My question is
How does this give him an excuse? Seems like an excuse would be to blame it on Halladay. ‘I could have gotten the mother lode from Texas, but Roy wouldn’t go.’

But why would Minnesota be told that Halladay wouldn't go there two weeks ago
while the Rangers supposedly weren’t told until Thursday night?
That doesn’t make sense.

Keeping Minn in the bidding isn’t going to drive up anybodys offer. Keeping Texas in it will.

So JD operated a month's (maybe more) worth of negotiations with Toronto
but never knew for sure whether Halladay would come to Texas?
Given the reputation of the ballpark, the ownership situation and the fact that Halladay is going to be a free agent after 2010, shouldn’t that have been the first question?
Otherwise, it’s a giant waste of time and you fail to help your team when it’s in a race for the division and the wild card.
I have a very hard time buying any of this from JD.

For one thing
He wasn’t solely working the Halladay trade. He had other stuff on his plate but yes he did work about a month on the Halladay trade under the assumption it could happen. He wasn’t able to contact Halladay directly so all he could go on was JPs word that if a deal was struck Halladay would approve.
Everything I have read from local guys to national guys says Halladay wouldn’t have approved a trade to Texas. The only guy who says he would have is JP.

Why in the world would you trust JP's word?
Maybe Roy was on the fence and told JP he wanted time to decide, so JP keeps talking a deal, and when it came down to it Roy just didn’t want to come here.
That’s certainly plausible. Roy could’ve said, “I for sure don’t want to go to Minny, but give me time to think on the rest of them.”

This has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion thread. You went from talking about whether Halladay wouldn’t have approved a trade to Texas to blaming JD for not trading for a hitter like Victor Martinez.
You should try sticking with an argument instead of just rotating through talking points.

Because either Halladay didn't decide or JP didn't tell him
Remember, JD isn’t allowed to talk to Halladay. That’s called tampering. That’s why JD has to rely on what JP says.

What appears to have happened is that JD allowed himself
to be (perhaps conveniently) used by Toronto. He can say he was involved in the trade negotiations for Halladay but at the end blame JP for not telling him that it was a complete waste of time.
This makes it appear as though JD once again “tried” which seems to be a recurring theme.
Not addressing the offense (when NJohnson went to Florida for a song) and simply hoping it gets better when our team is this good is unacceptable.
I can see why the vets on this team weren’t surprised JD couldn’t make anything happen.

Thank you for the summary of talking points 1-4
Spinning this to say that JD allowed himself to be used is laughable. First, if JD was used, then Nolan was used. Nolan said Thursday night that they were in on Halladay. Was Nolan lying? Was he letting himself be used?
Second, if the Rangers were interested in Halladay but had no way of knowing whether Halladay would accept a trade until the last minute (which appears to be the case), what would you have done differently? Would you have cut off communications with Toronto a month ago and then concentrated on overpaying for Victor Martinez or trading for a marginal upgrade like Nick Johnson?
Seriously, its a simple question: what would you have done differently in this situation than how JD and Nolan handled the trade deadline? (And I want a specific answer. Don’t even bother to respond if all you’re going to say is JD failed by not trading for a hitter. If you can’t answer these simple questions, then you should just admit that you’re talking out of your ass.)

First of all
JD was used by Ricciardi. Whether or not he allowed himself to be used is up for debate but without a doubt he was the mark in that game of poker and was used.
Finding out about Halladay coming to Texas had to be the first hurdle and without a definitive yes/no, everything else was a waste of time. Minnesota found out right away, why were we different?
What would I have done differently than JD? I would have looked at the glaring weakness of my team and fixed it. I would have gone after a hitter who gets on base and kills LH pitching.

JD only had JPs word to go on
Thats all he had. So if he had done what you suggest he would never have been in on Halladay since he couldn’t get a firm answer on whether or not he would actually come here. Then we would be regailed (sp?) with you berating JD because he didn’t even go after the best pitcher on the market with all our prospects. So its a lose lose for all us really.
As for a batter the only options were a guy who was a marginal upgrade at best over what you have currently and a guy who we would have had to overpay a ton for and block our current crop of young catchers.

JD is not that dumb
and had to know he was allowing himself to be used by Toronto. Maybe it was to extract a higher price from the Angels if they wanted Halladay?
What may be going on here is that JD’s protecting the owner (who is nowhere near a radio show these days) because no other explanation makes sense (including the bullshit about JP not telling him about Halladay until the last second).
I didn’t think Halladay was ever coming here because this organization thinks they get great pr mileage by making it known they are “trying” to acquire talent.

What exactly has JD done
since the Tex Trade?
Picked up a couple of bullpen arms but not much else other than wasting $ 9 million on Broussard, JJennings & Fukomori.
That trade was more than two years ago and he hasn’t done much since then.
JD’s track record of trades before the Tex Trade wasn’t exactly stellar either and is quite often referred to in here as his “learning curve.”

His drafts have been as good as anybody's.
I’d say Jennings has worked out pretty good this yr.
Outstanding latin signings the past 3 yrs.
The fattest chunk of the defensive improvement can be linked to the precise move you carped on and on about as sheer stupidity.
Do you like what O’day and Grilli have done this year? What about Andruw Jones? Cuz all 3 were the baseball equivalent of $free.99.
So, let’s see. Overhauled the defense, thus also improving the pitching, picked up 3 solid contributors for a bag of cornuts and a day old beanpie, fixed the bullpen (sorry) Bully, and continued and accelerated their ascendancy towards one of the top 3-4 player development machines in the bidness.
Just a few reasons why Nolan so frequently and emphatically praises the job JD has done (for THIS THING).

Byrd is hitting better than Blalock this year, and brings more defensive value, especitally when you are bringing in 1B/DH.
Blalock is the obvious person to kick off the team due to his inability to hit lefties, if you were to bring Johnson in.

I said the following this morning over at NMLR and it’s sincere.
“One last explanation -
I’ve thought about coming to the night in the past but if I show up, what happens that’s positive? I would become a major distraction and that is not what that night is supposed to be about. Newberg Night is a nice kiss from Jamey to some of the fans that follow the team.
JD holds nothing over me and I owe him nothing plus he’s not physically imposing so why would I be afraid to ask him tough questions?
Did anybody ask him tough questions about the offense last night and why he feels the best strategy for the rest of the year is “hope” especially when one of the players they are hoping gets better just went on the DL? Jeeez, Nick Johnson went for a song to the Marlins and he’s exactly what we needed.
That’s why last night wouldn’t have been my style because I wouldn’t let it go and everbody else would have become mad at me for upsetting JD who goes beyond favored child status in this place.
Speaking of hope, I sincerely hope everybody had a good time last night."

even to his own fanbase, so I doubt he gives a shit about lying to the media.

Right on down to the phone call where he says he apologized to Adam Dunn
That would have been fine if Dunn had any memory of ever receiving a call for JP.

I believe Daniels said tonight...
…that Ricciardi told him late Thursday that Halladay said he wouldn’t approve a trade to Texas.

The issue isn't when Ricciardi told Daniels
The issue is when Ricciardi actually knew.

I believe you are correct AJM, per what JD said.
(even though I think you are dumb for not remembering meeting me at least three times before tonight)

In defense of Adam, I think we were all a little out of it
Case in point: I didn’t recognize my own co-writer. (Although I had never actually met him, but still…)

David was there too?

I'd be really interested in hearing
whatever part of the narrative Daniels shared.

JD said there were three things Roy wanted:
1. Contender
2. Someone he knows on the club
3. ? (don’t remember)
Essentially, they were discussing the pieces needed and were coming close to an accord when JD asked if Halliday had been officially asked if he would accept a trade to TX. JD surmised any more effort in the deal would be in vain if Doc would not come to Texas. At that point, JP officially asked the direct question, and Halliday said “No”.

That was Will Carroll, not Daniels
- was training in Florida.
I believe Daniels said Toronto indicated about 10 days before the deadline that Halladay would waive his no-trade clause, and they asked Thursday for them to get an official confirmation, because it was pointless to continue talking if that was going to be an issue, and they came back and said he wouldn’t waive it.
From what I recall, the no-trade wasn’t that much of a sticking point anyway, because what Ricciardi wanted wasn’t a doable package anyway.
So you can say the no-trade made it moot, or you can say the no-trade was irrelevant.

Was is just Holland that was the sticking point? Did JP want two of our top 4 but JD was only willing to give up one?

So if Ricciardi & JD couldn't agree on players
why leak it to the masses that Halladay wasn’t going to waive his NTC for Texas?
Letting that known would seem to take JD off the hook to some but it also calls into question why he’d allow himself to be used.

I fail to see how this makes it look like he got used
It got leaked because of all the idiots like you who bitch and moan about using our #1 farm system to acquire a veteran player.
If anything it makes JP look like the bad guy because if he didn’t know before that Halladay was going to deny the trade then hes an idiot and if he did know before hand then he negotiated in bad faith.
JP is the only guy that looks bad in all this, not JD
