Pitchers to watch

should include Braden Tullis and Erlin. Tracy is having a nice summer I guess, yawn.

Yeah, those two will reappear.

I should have gotten Tullis back on there today. As for Erlin, he’s pitched only one pro inning. He’ll earn his way onto the list at some point.

Maybe Doyle, too

he’s had an awfully nice summer.

Profar for one

Miguel DLS possibly
Chad Tracy maybe
Tellis most likely

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Profar is two billion times the prospect Chad Tracy is.

Don’t be silly.

Even if The Newberg’s basement freezes over and Tracy ends up eeking a few Mike Simms years out in the bigs while Profar busts out before even making it to full season ball, Profar would still have been the correct choice there by like a billion percent times seventy.

OK so its a top prospect list then

Cause I was under the impression it was a hybrid top prospect/hotsheet type list.

Profar is the better prospect but Tracys season, and especially since the ASB, would put him at the back end of a hotsheet list in our system

I meant on the pitchers to watch list

but I guess no names on that list jump out either, maybe Murray.

Love me some Braden Tullis.

I think he’ll end up being my pet cat…

Chad Tracy...

Have you noticed how Chad Tracy has done since the All-Star Break? In 44 games, he’s hitting .330/.371/.670. He’s got got 15 home runs in 176 at-bats. When I consider how he ended his 2008 season (see here), it’s hard not to think that he’s got a real shot to be added to the 40-Man Roster this off-season.

Scott Baio. Rick Fox. Brian Austin Green. My heroes have always been mediocre.

Greg Golson doesn't do extra base hits.

I'm tired of the suspense; why won't they just tell us what they mean by 'Male Enhancement?'

The HR he hit last night ...

was about the no-doubtiest no-doubt HR I’ve ever seen. Thwack – gone – next batter.

Doyle

I guess Jamey is not an Andrew Doyle fan. He should have at least made the watch list.

Jamey, since you are around. How much money did the Rangers spend on thier LA signees? Was it a record for them?

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year

I think the last time I was genuinely excited about a Spokane player

it was Martin last year.

I only want to see teenagers there. Even Velazquez’s stat line makes me think he should be in low A for a proper test.

Robbie Ross?

I know

Nintendo numbers, but so much can go wrong. Plus he’s on the old side.

I want to see it at the next level.

Really, the competition level at short-A is just a cipher for me. It’s such a mix personnel-wise, and yet mediocre college bats still seem to excel there.

Ross just turned 20 towards the end of June

He’s not on the old side at all. He’s the 28th youngest player in the NWL. That’s not Martin Perez young, but he isn’t the same as a college player who should be expected to play well in short A

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

i guess I've been under my rock

but I didn’t realize Tracy is having that good of a season

by blueballlefty on Aug 20, 2009 10:05 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That's because he's not good at all so no one cares.

The Newberg is being pretty dumb as ass shit about this.

Tracy is 24.

He’s hitting .275/.326/.489 for the season. The OBP is pretty bad, and while the power seems to be pretty nice, that’s still only an .815 OPS for those scoring at home.

He’s a LF/1b/Dh-type, so it’s not like he plays a premium position, plus everything I’ve read has pegged him as well below average in LF. No idea how he is at 1b, but I’m guessing that as a converted catcher the answer is gonna rhyme with, “Fucking Shitty as Fuck.”

He’s a righty, but he can’t even man the righty half of a platoon as he’s actually worse against lefties than he is against righties. (.246/.307/.439)

So basically an old for his league converted catcher who sucks at defense, has poor plate discipline, and basically only looks good on on the jumbotron because he’s hitting a few dingers this season and has got lots of RBI’s, which are a great way to judge a prospect.

I mean… WTF, The Newberg???

I try to be nice to the Newberg these days cause he gets his feelings super hurt and erases me from his mailing list whenever I ownership him super hard on something, but rating Chad Tracy as an actual honest to goodness prospect is some straight up bullshit that not even Finnerty would pull.

damn

i got off easy with a simple “no” when i brought up his prospect status on the minors thread. thanks for being easy on me, dirk.

still, in a system void of HR hitting position players, I think you’re being pretty hard on Tracy. Maybe he’s a late bloomer like our former OFs who ended up in Detroit…not superstars, but decent enough bats to carve out a niche.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Aug 20, 2009 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...

How does the system being void of “HR hitting position players” (EDITOR’S NOTE: As opposed to hme run hitting… Uh, I dunno. Pitchers? Bullpen Coaches? Advance Scouts? Um, yah. “The department of Reduncy Department is paging Mr. Clark K. McSweter-Vest. Please report to the Counter of Wasting TheDirkatron’s Time Counter, please.”) have any bearing on how we should view Tracy’s prospectiness?

It shouldn’t.

Though I like your analogy with Thames/Monroe out in Detroit. Like I said earlier, there’s a chance that if everything goes right he could eek out a few Mike Simms years, but there’s absolutely no way that any non-Newbergian can consider him a legit prospect at this point.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Aug 20, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would

never call him a prospect, but i really wouldn’t say he is not good at all like dirk says.
if you can hit or pitch at AA up, i call you a baseball player. you are not good if you cannot get out of short season ball or a backup A player.

not good enough players are guys who wash out at or below AA and end up in independent leagues.

Why do you like Profar so much more than Sardinas?

Did Profar do something to Marcus Lemon?

I love the things I hear about both these kids.

Just curious as to why Profar rates at 20 and Sardinas merits nary a mention from anyone.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

I hate to keep going back to the same well

(and I hate to seem like I’m speaking for Chuckles Newberg here as well)

But JD expressed some serious Profar love at the Q&A. Like, Ari Gold-Vinny Chase love. Like, he might consider moving one of the A-ball teams to a state with friendly gay marriage laws just on the odd chance that Profar comes around type love.

He seriously seemed like he had to stop short of yelling ’JURI’S GONNA ROCK YOUR FUCKING SOCKS OFF, TEXAS!’ and punching Goldstein for not saying Profar’s like the love child of Hanley and on-roids A-Rod.

Nary a word was said about Sardines during this time.

Which is kind of weird, because everything about the two dudes is super similar- same cash, position, both switch hitters (iirc on Sardinas, ymmv. jfgi, fwiw.).

So, anyway, yeah. what’s up with that?

I did get wind of said JD's ejaculation regarding Profar.

But I’m just saying that we signed Sardinas to an equally large bonus as Profar this summer (at least according to what we’ve been told… the LA signing bonus info we get is opaque at best for whatever reason).

Is one decision to single out Profar at The Newberg’s high roller’s night at the BPiA all that’s driving The Newberg’s love of Profar? Or is there more to it than this?

Seems to me like Sardinas should be getting a bit of love, too.

For what it’s worth I had Profar ranked about in the same region in my own pathetic-as-hell prospect-y list at the mid-season point (a bit lower, actually… bit I had Purke and Scheppers and Fleas and Borbon on that list), so I’m not picking his nits about where Profar is ranked, just wondering why he seems to prefer Profar to such a huge extent over Sardinas.

No kidding.

Would you rather have a player who sounds like he should be pickled and served in a tin can?

Or would you rather have a player that sounds like cousin to a velociraptor?

I don't think the original point I was going to make came through

What I was trying to get across is that If Chuckles keeps throwing Profar up at 20 based solely on what JD had to say- and how he said it- I’m kinda on board. That was Josey defending Blalock level passion.

At the same time, the only thing Sardines doesn’t have that Profar does is that JD rant (and a LLWS ring, and the homers in that BP session, but those are even way more spurious factors, and you’ve got to give Newberg more credit than that). You kind of have to wonder if Sardinas is sitting in his room somewhere listening to Dashboard Confessional, wondering what he has to do to get us to love him. I just hope he doesn’t turn into a cutter.

I hope one of the little bastards makes it over to Arizona next year, because I couldn’t deal with another year with no scouting reports on them they go DSL next year. Is it crazy to think one could spend some time at Spokane next year? If Leury can hang in the Sally at 18, hope one of those dudes could handle short-season at 17.

As a general principle

16yo Venezuelans are more advanced as baseball players than in other LA countries outside of Cuba. It is a safe bet that Sardinas is also an elite prospect and, like Profar, one of the top 3 LA shortstops in this years class (according to some). Profar is a special kid from a small island that that might produce an elite player once every 5-7 years but Venezuela produces a handful of those each and every year. So one should instead look at the situation in the obverse: Knowing that Profar got Sardinas money (and not the reverse) makes me pretty confidant that Profar is the real deal as a SS (rather than a pitcher).

It is quite an organizational coup getting 2 elite first -round -caliber shortstops in and of itself . Both kids should be considered elite prospects based on the money that TX chose to pay them, that is, first-round money in the 15-20 range. Big-time signings.

I love it when Mr. D.A. Tron heckles The Newberg

He’s so much wittier, more knowledgeable, and more entertaining than the weak sauce Finnerty brings. I would like to see Finnerty attempt to argue with Dirk. The Tron would own him in a matter of seconds.

Nice work, though, by Keynes. “Chuckles Newberg” got a laugh out loud from me.
