Purke money
Liverpool also signed a defender, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, today for around $3 million. Supposedly, though, the finances of the two clubs are separate.

Can you imagine how Abramovich would shake things up?
The first time Galloway wrote one of his patented owner-bashing columns, Abramovich would send mafiosos to break his kneecaps. If Galloway did it again, well, he’d be found at a rock quarry in Palo Pinto County.
Drayton thinks the Silver Boot is a big deal? Abramovich would challenge him to make $10 million side bets on every game.

Because he's probably just turned 16
and doesn’t know how to use his new size/weight to throw harder. He’ll grow, improve mechanically and add weight. I expect his numbers to rise. Maybe not 95+, but 92-94 isn’t unreasonable.

Thats great and all and when he does learn those things and starts throwing harder then i’ll start paying attention to him but as it stands he doesn’t do it for me. Maybe the Fonts and Perez’s of the last few years have spoiled me when it comes to LA kids but a RHP who sits in the 80s doesn’t ecite me at this time

You dork
Do you think Perez was sitting in the mid-90s when he signed? Do you think Feliz was hitting 100 when he was covered with pimples and peach fuzz? Actually, sometimes velocity of that sort can be a bad sign in a kid that age, arm trouble might be on the horizon, or they’ve achieved it by overpitching or bad mechanics.

Once again
I didn’t mean for it to sound like i thought he wasn’t a good prospect.
My point was merely that for the bonus money he got my expectations for such a short scouting report were alot higher. If it had said 86-89 mph fastball with a plus changeup that has the potential to be Poveda-esque then yesh sign me up. As it stands he’ll be another young guy on the AZL team next summer who i’ll keep tabs on and hope he does indeed breakout.

16 year-olds rarely have plus pitches
They have pitches with plus potential. Big difference. Having an 86-89 mph fastball at age 16 is a very promising thing. Finding a player with that kind of raw velocity to go along with projectable size is a very, very promising thing. Don’t discount the scouting report on Perez because it doesnt read like Ynoa’s or Portillo’s.
Also, 16 year-olds dont need to “break out.” They just need to develop. Development doesnt fit into a box.

i think bigsteve has a point
in that, if this is just a tall right handed kid who can hit the upper 80s at age sixteen, then he is like literally thousands of American teenagers. what made this kid special enough to shell out half a mil to acquire? i think its a valid question.
oh jeez.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
by clark on Aug 20, 2009 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's a rational question
the tone he took practically dismissing him out of hand turned most of us off. Truth is we probably won’t get a complete scouting report till Parks or someone sees him at instructs. Several someones saw him and the Rangers liked him enough to sign. They’ve had a good track record lately so I’m willing to take it on faith for now and hope more information comes to light later.
by Hull Fan on Aug 20, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's an overstatement
but you are talking about a tiny bit of information. Roy Halladay is tall and throws 92 on average. Does that sum up his game? And whatever he threw when he was 16 or 18 or 20, did his velocity tell you what kind of prospect he was? Did John Danks’?
It’s such a bizarre angle that I don’t even quite know what is being questioned.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 20, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i just want to know
more about the kid, i guess. it seems so difficult to look at a sixteen year old kid and project whether he could be an asset to a major league team. The Rangers should get in the habit of tweeting short scouting reports when they sign kids like this. What’s the harm in that? They have a small but rabid fan base who would love to hear what the club sees in this kid. Something like the A’s sent out after every draft pick back in June would suffice.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

it is obviously that time of year where if someone makes a comment that isn’t “Sweet! This news rox! Rangers FTW!” then they must be blowhards who think they know more than the pros.
I think what has been questioned on this thread is simply “I wonder what else there is to him, beyond what we’ve heard in the scouting report, that makes him worthy of such a generous signing bonus.” There were no, “WTF is the FO doing?!” comments. Just intrigue. So chillax, man.

Trust
This type of thinking (16 and can’t throw 90) is one big reason the farm was so bad a few years ago. If you have a hard time getting excited about the signing, could you imagine writing the check.
You have to put your faith in people who know how to project. I can’t imagine the success rate. Its low for 18 year old high schoolers. How low is it for 16 year olds? But there is no other way of building in Latin America. This is the system and this is how you gain talent outside the draft and free agency.
Why shouldn’t you trust the people you have given you the best Farm in the major? This is when you write the checks. Before other teams come and take your away your talent evaluators.

Right
The Pirates are/were really counting on signing Sano. They put in serious wrench work to get in the mix for his services. It’s important to remember that while money is an important part of the process, establishing sound relationships with the players (especially if you have multiple teams bidding on them) is the real challenge. Most relationships start with the buscones. Some are looking out for the kids they represent and some are just looking out for their cut. The latter will do anything necessary to make their player stand-out including manipulation of documents and even physical tests (see link below). It gets really complicated when additional advisors show up to get a piece of the pie. The economic conditions and social structures dont make things easier.
Rene Gayo, the Pirates’ Dir. of LA scouting, might be the best living room man in the business. I’m fortunate enough to count him as a mentor (at least when it comes to career advice), so it really sucks that he couldnt make a splash with this haul. Hopefully the situation works out for the Pirates, but it’s a complicated issue and the most of the information coming out of LA is less than reliable. Of course, I’ve asked Rene about Sano and he continues to give me the Heisman. He would say there is a lesson in that.
Anyway, the Sano situation always makes me think about the signing process and how much time, effort, and money are spent trying to properly scout, secure, and sign an international player. It is the ultimate kick in the crotch to watch one slip away. I dont think LA Scouting Directors receive enough recognition.
Check out this story on Sano. It’s a good read. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08335/931514-63.stm
