Friday a.m. Rangers things
Big series this weekend...but right now, they are all big series, I think...
Jeff Wilson's game story talks about the young Rangers getting the job done yesterday.
Julio Borbon and Elvis Andrus are causing opposing catchers problems on the basepaths.
Nelson Cruz says he's ready to start contributing again, after missing time on the d.l.
Marlon Byrd has rebounded well from offseason microfracture surgery.
T.R. Sullivan has some bloggy notes up.
And Evan Grant wants to know, what would your OF/DH alignment be for this three-game series in Tampa?

I got to attend last night's game.
It was a real thrill watching all the kids contribute last night. When I think of the next several years of Holland, Feliz, Andrus, Hunter, and Borbon, hopefully augmented with a productive Chris Davis, Justin Smoak, Taylor Teagarden and led by Josh Hamilton, Mike Young, and Ian Kinsler, I get very excited about where this team is headed. If things break right, that’s the kind of talent that could go on a late-90’s Yankee-type run.
I’m still so excited about baseball that I haven’t been keeping up with Cowboys training camp at all.

There’s a reason Joe Sheehan threw out the word “dynasty” a while back discussing the type of talent this club has at the big league level and rising up through the minor league ranks.

Price has allowed a higher avg against lefties but a lower OPS by about 20 pts. Isnt this the essence of playing the percentages?

You can’t bench Borbon at this point, but Wash can be ridiculous sometimes. I think adding speed to this lineup is great
It also gives opposing pitchers an incentive not to throw balls in the dirt with those guys on base, because we all know with our hitters that a pitch in the dirt is an easy strike normally.
Go Rice Owls!
I do as well
I really believe we could lead the league in stolen bases next yr. Kinsler, Andrus and Borbon should be above 40 steals next yr, Cruz should be at 25-30 and Hamilton should be around 20.

Its too bad we cant have
Andrus and Borbon on for Hack every time. He would never drive them in but the lack of balls rolled to him would keep him from grounding to 2nd and getting K’d up everytime. Their speed would make DPs less likely also.
I like that we're adding speed but not really at the expense of any offense
Its not like we’re adding a Scott Podsednik or Willy Taveraz who can’t do anything but steal bases. Kinsler, Cruz, and Hamilton are all good for 20+ SBs over a full season and that just adds to the great offensive production we get from them.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

was the last time they had 4 guys with even 10 stolen bases, but you have to go back to 1978 to find 4 guys with 20. Bonds, Wills, Harrah and Campaneris. 5 guys had 20 the year before. Based on a quick search those are the only two seasons it happened.
I think it’s a bit early to assume that Borbon gets there this year, though it wouldn’t surprise me. Cruz is a tad hobbled and he might not make it either.

I don't have a problem with AJ
I have a problem with the fact that no matter when he plays, he’s in the cleanup spot. AJ, who has been a starter his entire career being a bench player on this team without complaining about playing time is a great thing. He knows his role, and I like that about him..
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

The mentality with most is that CJ gives up too many baserunners, even in his scoreless outings.
Looking at his last 10 outings, including the OAK blown game, he’s given up 9 hits and 3 walks in 10 innings. 4 of those were the OAK game in only 1/3 IP. Also has 18 SO in that same time.

You're allowed to give up some base runners
When you’re striking out that many

Yeah, but the flip side is..
you HAVE to strike out that many when you give that many base runners.
I love the guy and think he’s a helluva asset, BTW.

You don't HAVE to strike out that many
He’s got a K/9 of 16.2 with a WHIP of 1.2. He’s not loading the bases up each inning he goes out there and has to strike out the side or get weak IF pop ups.

This is one place where the SSS thing impacts people's perceptions..
For every 3 outings where he doesn’t put anyone on, there’s the one where the first batter or two reaches and results in a Wetteland flashback.
Again, I think he’s nails, but he does cause heartburn fro time to time.

it's also because Feliz has only given up 3 hits and 0 bbs
but I agree with you about CJ. The guy has been really good, yet he gets blasted.
I don’t like the Feliz and closer talk. The value of having a guy like Verlander (Feliz) in our rotation who can hit triple digits into the 7th and 8th innings would be huge. It is much bigger than the closer role. CJ and FX2 and a number of other pitchers can turn into good closers.

JJT sucks so bad as a writer
JJT is to writing what Hank Blalock is to ugly swings at low-and-away sliders with a 1-2 count.

On the OKC tip ...
Max sez he’s going to play Winterball again just like he always does and not rest his wrists.
Thinks he needs to make up for lost AB’s due to the time he missed this Summer.
But they attacked me with the fastball. The thing about me missing fastballs up there is not only was I late but I was swinging so uphill that even if I made contact, I was probably going to foul it off or pop it up. I wasn’t going to drive the ball. We cleaned that up the day I got down here. We concentrated on figuring out how to smooth out my bat path.
they cleaned that up the day he got down to the minors. where was Jaramillo? I really hope they let him walk.

I'm thinking
the finances of HSG are so bad that we’ll have to go cheap on our batting coach next year.

Is Jaramillo's contract up at the end of the season?
I though it ran one more.

Googled his contract.
This is the best I could do, couldn’t find the specifics. But yeah, it looks like it’s up after this season.

He's a young player.
Clearly Jaramillo doesn’t have time for the youngins’. Too many veterans who need work on their stuff. Look at his work with Blalock!

that they could only clean it up at AAA but not with rudy…

I was going to try and defend Rudy but
I can’t. If they can fix CD’s swing in AAA then Rudy should have been able to do it here also. They play just as many games per week as the majors and they have the bus rides to contend with. I think CD just didn’t take to Rudy’s cookie cutter approach. I also don’t want him back next year.

Playing Satan's advocate here...
…but the big leagues are a results driven endeavor, whereas the minors are not.
It’s entirely possible you could see a problem that needs fixing but not be able to make the necessary changes at the big league level because the results here actually matter and you can’t risk a rebuild like that on the fly.
The quote that he began the rebuild the very day he got down to OKC makes me think they already had a pretty solid idea of just what the fuck had gone wrong and had sent him down with a specific idea of what he needed to fix and the AAA was the spot chosen for the fixing, not the place where he was sent in the hope that someone there would be able to fix him, if that makes any sense.

Yep
The quote of “its not gonna happen overnight” also lends me to believe that.

The offense of This Thing
appears to be turning a corner.
92 runs in August with (he says while beaming) a smooth running .354 obp/.829 OPS.
If we get that obp/ops the rest of the way, we’ll get the WC at least, if not more.
I’d tap the breaks on canning Rudy just yet.

The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
I think Rudy tried to make a small improvement to CDs swing
to fix a small problem, but it messed him up. Once he was messed up, the tinkering continued and made things worse. When he went back to AAA, he went back to his old swing with his old coach and got the old results.
I think Rudy tinkers with everyone’s swing a little bit. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. In CD’s case, it didn’t.

Doesn't Rudy
work with Tiny E? Everybody happy with that production from a 20 year old who had less than a .720 OPS at AA?
What about his work with AJones (who was as lost a cause as there was in MLB last year?
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

I'm not bashing Rudy for CD
His success rate is pretty good. No one is perfect, though. To say that he couldn’t help CD doesn’t make him a bad hitting coach. It just means he couldn’t help CD.
I’m not defending Rudy either. In June, it wasn’t just one guy having problems, it was an epidemic. That is when people were calling for his head. I don’t think the success in August has made people forget the futility in June and July, though.

He's not back to his "old" swing.
He’s modified his swing in a similar way to how Cruz modified his swing before.
that was the angle I was originally going to take
But why keep him up so long when you knew what the problems were? Did Rudy think he could fix his problems?

EG's question...
about playing time, not only this series, but the rest of the season this is how I’d roll:
Borbon / Andrus
MY
Hamilton
Cruz
Kinsler
Byrd
CD / Jones
Pudge / TT
Andrus / Borbon
I keep Borbon in the lineup as long as he’s hot. Even against lefties. Andrus can leadoff against lefties and Jones can spell CD at 1B against some lefties. I think Pudge will take over the majority of the catching duties here shortly. Murphy can start against a RH pitcher to give Byrd a day off although we all know it will take an act from God for Wash to sit Byrd.

Borbon/Andrus
leading off just makes too much since. Does JD need to do another intervention to get Wash to do it?
