Well everything looks great,
except for those walks. Walks are what kills pitchers in Arlington.
The bloggerformelyknownasBigBaddBubbaJ
Holland is averaging less than 3 walks per 9 in that span
That’s pretty good.

When you aren't giving up many hits they don't hurt that much
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Do batters who walk in Arlington...
…get awarded two bases?
Walks are bad everywhere.

Arlington is a hitters park
and homeruns can fly out of this park very easily. it hurts a pitcher more to walk someone in Arlington rather than San Diego.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
RBiA has played fairly neutral the last few years...

That kinds of depends
on whose park factors you’re looking at. It’s definitely not neutral to lefties.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Perhaps, but the idea that walks are particularly egregious in Arlington...
…is a little too simplistic to me. They’re bad everywhere.
It’s not like the FO for San Diego sees a pitcher who walks a relatively larger number of batters and says “that’s OK we play our home games at Petco, we can live with the extra walks”.
Pitchers need to get outs, avoid giving up walks, hits, and extra-base hits…whrerever they play their home games.

I still think that part of the "hitters park" issue comes from having a powerful offense and sucktastic pitchers for a long time
When you have a lineup filled with sluggers and a pitching staff full of spares and Quad-A guys, yeah your park is going to see a lot balls flying over the fences.
With the team we’re building now, I bet we see the park trend a lot more neutral.

Park factors
have nothing to do with the talent on the club. Do you think the people figuring park factors are too stupid to think about that?
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
In fairness, I don't profess to be an expert on some of the ways of calculating park factor
Isn’t it based, in part, on how many home runs are hit at the park?
"You dont know much do you, Big Steve?"
--Finnerty.Fan on Aug 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT
Yes, but
they are also factoring in how the players hit HRs at other parks, and the rate includes visiting players as well.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
So our historically
shitty pitching staff could have an impact on park factors then, right?
by Anonymous New Guy on Aug 21, 2009 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Well, the visiting players is part of my point
They probably hit more homers at the Ballpark in previous years because they were facing Robinson Tejeda, John Koronka, Mickey Callaway, and others like that, not Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz. So that would skew the homer friendliness of the park a little.
I understand that those same pitchers were sucking for the Rangers on the road too. But my thought is that, when you combine a sucky pitcher with a park that admittedly does favor hitters, it exacerbates the hitter friendliness more than it would if you combined the same park with pitchers who don’t suck as much. Am I all wet in my understanding of the issue?

Heh, I was just thinking
that you probably had another post preset for 11:00.
Holland will pass Millwood soon for the team lead in K’s, and Nippert’s rate is just above Holland’s, to say nothing of the big three K guys in the bullpen. It’s nice to have some strikeout pitchers on the staff.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Nippert – K/9 – 7.75 BB/9 – 3.522
Holland – K/9 – 7.17 BB/9 – 2.796
Hunter – K/9 – 5.87 BB/9 – 2.935
Millwood – K/9 – 5.62 BB/9 – 3.129
Feldman – K/9 – 4.92 BB/9 – 2.883
as longs as those BB/9’s stay low, I’d be happy with those K rates
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Feldman's raising K/9 is nice.
Gives me more confidence that he can stick in the rotation for the next few years.
by GhettoBear04 on Aug 21, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Feldman's K rates
Higher in April than in May, June, or July (July was very low) then quite high in August:
April – 6.2
May – 4.4
June – 4.3
July – 3.4
August – 7.7
SSS an issue for each of those numbers, but I think it’s a stretch to say his K rate is increasing. Oddly enough, his ERA was higher in the months his K rate was up.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Feldman K-rate and his curve
Just based on watching him pitch, I’d say the climbing K-rate is largely due to the increased usage and effectiveness of his curveball, which has dramatically improved this season. Although I noticed that his last start, which was relatively poor, he didn’t throw that pitch much at all. Hopefully just a blip and not a sore arm or anything like that.

yea, I've been saying that for a while
with his improved command and increased useage of the curve, I think his K-Rates will climb… thats why i have hopes for him being an above average SP going forward
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
April he was also a reliever
All it takes is a 2K inning to bump up your K/9 numbers in such a short sample
I think Feldman is the perfect example of a guy who can succeed “pitching to contact”. Doing so allows him to get deeper into games and be more effective. When he tries to strike more guys out he ends up losing some of his effectiveness
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Feldman's K rate
usually corresponds with his G:F ratio. When he’s getting lots of grounders, his K rate drops but his ERA improves. I noticed that last year and its been the same this year. I don’t know what to make of it.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
what to make of it
Is he has alot of movement on his pitches I imagine. That 2 seamer he throws darts in on RHB and away on LHB and guys make weak contact on it resulting in alot of groundouts. When he doesn’t have his best movement he tries to paint too much and get guys to chase stuff out of the zone which leads to deeper counts, more balls over the plate, but also more strikeouts.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
how many people that were complaining to trade for Hallady
would now give up Hunter, Holland, Borbon and Smoak? All of that to win this year, when these guys give us not only a better chance to win this year (exception of Smoak) and especially years to come.
I love that we have stuck to the plan and it is starting to pay off earlier. This last month of the season is crucial not only for our chances of making the playoffs, but in teaching these kids about how to win under the pressure of a pennant race.

Lee in Philly:
33.0 ip, 18 hits, 0 hr, 6 bb, 34 k, 0.82 era, 0.73 whip, .161 baa
4 dominant starts and 4 wins.

I didnt understand when people where calling Lee not a TORG and saying that he wasnt in the same realm
as Halladay. I still think Halladay is a bit better, but the difference is almost nil. Lee is a darn good pitcher and he’s proven that for over a year and a half… all his indicators say that he’s good too.

as long as this road trip is
it could be good to get away from the Texas heat.

He was pissed at himself.

he's young
he got the team in the bases load jam, he was upset, and he wanted to get the team out of the jam. no pitcher wants to come out like that.
at least Wash learned from his mistake the last two days.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Yeah, that's the impression I got.
He was pissed that he’d loaded the bases, not that he was getting pulled.
Wonder what he keeps yelling into
his glove when he gets yanked from a game?

Because he learns from other's mistakes.
Hunter’s grandmother and mother recently busted him for screaming obscenities when he was pulled for a game, they could easily read his lips. Now, he puts his glove over his mouth when he cusses, and no one gets upset with him.
This Derek, he’s sneaky smaht!

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
Wow. Given up half the amount of hits
in more innings. Riccardi is a dumbass. What if he had given in to our offer of Neftali and possibly Smoak. How does he still have a job? Thanks to Kenny Williams

good situation for Holland.
He will be the #2 next year behind Millwood even though he may be the superior pitcher. Let Millie take on the pressure of being the #1. In 2011, Holland becomes the ace. Hopefully not just in name but in results on the field also.

I'd have to guess
that Feldman would be slotted #2 starting next season, unless of course they think he’d be better off in the bullpen…

Did I screw that up last night?
I calculated Holland’s ERA in that stretch to be 1.85.
I did the math wrong
B-R hadn’t updated, so I couldn’t use the automatic calculator with the game logs, and for some reason I gave him 2 extra ERs.
