This is one we needed to win

With both the Angels and the Blood Sox losing, we needed to gain a game on each of them.

But we shit our pants instead.

It was faster and smoother than 3.0. Then the memory warnings and shit started, and I bailed fairly quickly. I’m an Opera guy for now.

You don't live in Houston

In Houston, where VY is from, and where the hometown team was holding the #1 pick, for about six months, I heard people on the radio ranting about how the Texans were going to pass on a future HOF QB to take a running back who couldn’t stay on the field.

And then, when the Texans took Mario Williams, people went absolutely insane.

I heard one sports talk host here claim that the question wasn’t whether VY would succeed in the NFL, but whether he’d be the Michael Jordan of the NFL, or just a HOF-caliber QB.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 21, 2009 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

There has never been a question in my mind he would fail.

In the NFL there is no such thing as a great running QB, there are QB’s that run but that is only an absolute last option.

Just saying.

HR or triple, that ball was smoked. He’s startin to hit for power if nothing else, and I would expect his .263 BABIP to come up to a more normal range with more playing time.

I still don’t think he’s ever going to be much of an offensive force, but I’d much rather see him play than a washed up Pudge.

Ditto--plus Tea should be better

Why is it that sample size doesn’t matter here, when others are ready to give up on him? Tea was a relatively high OPA and OPS guy in the minors—there’s nothing in his record that indicates he would be batting so low. I’d give him more PAs and see if his numbers trend upward

by davea on Aug 21, 2009 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Tea is a .235 hitter at AA/AAA

I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.

by diamond_dave on Aug 21, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I was going to correct myself---I fucked up that comment--ahem, let me try again

He did very well in the low minors, but, you’re right, his AAA numbers were poor last year. His AA numbers are a bit deceiving—because his had two short stretches, one in which he performed well, and a shorter one last year in which he was dreadful. In a perfect world, he should have a whole year in AAA this year to show conclusively what kind of hitter he is—which isn’t going to be great

by davea on Aug 22, 2009 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions

For the next month

The future doesn’t mean nearly as much as doing what is best for the team now. If things were completely equal, yeah you play the younger guy who has more of a future. That’s not the case though and Teagarden still isn’t doing that great where you can’t bench him more than a couple of times a week.

And the pitches per plate appearance are practically meaningless. You’re talking about a difference of 2-3 pitches a game.

He's sucked for Houston

Not for us

Except

Teagarden sucks as well, and its not like he projects to a future starter.

TT numbers are acceptable for a #8 hitter

AJ’s numbers are also acceptable for a #8 hitter. Problem is that he batted 4th.

The Rangers apparently think...

…his offense (which has been terrible this year) will improve if he’s only playing part-time.

part time means he can still play more than twice a week though

He probably

won’t be worse than Teagarden, which isn’t a high bar.

CJ didn't look too hot.

Not really sure why he pitched in a game we where down in at the beginning of a road trip.

Know what would help?

If one of these Nancys went out there and sucked up a few innings

I blame JD and/or Nolan. Wash should not be a manager of a young team.

By now they know what Wash is going to do. They get him veteran players to be part-time players and mentors for the kids and instead he uses them as everyday players, out of place. I would like to see the percentage of teams whose two leading home runs hitters bat 1, 5, or 6. And the Julio Borbon thing is going to drive me crazy because he says he can’t take Blalock out because he went 3-4 but he is able to sit Borbon after he goes 6-8. Then pulls Borbon to pinch hit AJ but does not do the same when rolls are reversed. This team is young and going to get younger if he doesn’t want to play and teach young kids then he needs to get the fuck off of the field and see if someone else will hire him.

I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.

I agree with your overall premise

That’s something I’ve been saying for a long time.

But I still don’t see why PHing for Borbon that one time was such a stinking big deal. That’s supposedly what Jones’s role would be if he was used in more of a reserve role like you want.

Let me count the ways:

(1) Borbon is hot, in fact, he is the best hitter in MLB right now, so let it ride.
(2) AJ isn’t, currently 7-46 or some crap like that
(3) AJ is a poor pinch hitter 1of 7/8 or some crap like that
(4) AJ can’t or want run out ground balls/ which resulted in inning ending DP in this case
(5) Rangers have averaged over 6 per game in Borbon starts (he elevates the team because he causes pitcher to pitch differrently)

AJ can pinch hit for Teagarden, Blaylock, a pitcher not the #1 hitter in baseball.

I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.

Borbon is not the #1 hitter in baseball.

I suppose he might have the highest BABIP in baseball right now, but he’s not the #1 hitter in baseball. That’s just silly.

He’s a rook who had 1 PA against a lefty in the majors coming into that game, and hasn’t esxactly excelled against lefties in the minors. Because of the result you could probably call it overmanaging, but basically Wash played the percentages, went for the big XBH and lost. It happens.

Right now, the past week, yes he has the highest or best average in MLB, #1

by diamond_dave on Aug 22, 2009 6:24 AM CDT up reply actions

And no he didn't play the %'s

The typical L-R split nets you 42 points in average but a pinch hitter is a 34 point loss on average but that is with both hitters being equal. In this case both hitters are not equals. That doesn’t even take into effect the factors listed above and the fact that Borbon has about a 50 point advantage against lefties over AJ, this year. That pinch hitting shit is old school baseball that has been shown to be wrong in most cases by the sabermetrician’s, unless the batter he is replacing is much worse.

Well...

that was a pretty depressing game to be at. To clear up some questions about the Teagarden HR…
Evidently it went over the catwalk which means it’s a home run. We didn’t see it hit the catwalk. And it clearly hit the wall on the way down. Upton did look a little silly trying to make that catch.
The attempt at a rally was fun… especially after how boring it was leading up to that.
Also, it was pretty frustrating to see so many players moved up to 3rd on shitty throws.

At least we put up a stink-fest the same night as the Cowboy's game

Pretty sure not that many saw the game

Got to say final tv results are probably going to be

Rangers 1.0
