Fork can probably go in the division race.
6.5 back with forty to play? We’d have to sweep the Angels the rest of the way.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
Does that sound unreasonable to you?
The Rangers have the Angels number this year. The Rangers can sweep the Angels the rest of the way.
by Mark from OC on Aug 22, 2009 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions
No they can't...
the way the Halos are playing right now, yes that’s unreasonable.
The only chance the Rangers have right now is at the WC.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Rangers can take the WC
AND they can beat the Angels in every game they play for the rest of the year. Even if they do that, I don’t think they will take the division. But I believe in the resonabilitynessosity of sweeping the Angels.
by Mark from OC on Aug 22, 2009 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions
The thing is
We can sweep the Angels and it won’t matter if they play .650 or .700 ball against everyone besides Texas and the Rangers play .550 or .600 ball against everyone besides Anaheim.
Well...
Just for the sake of argument, lets say the Rangers take the remaining 7 games head-to-head. That alone would erase the current deficit/lead in the division and would become a dead heat the rest of the way. Basically, its which team can rack up more W’s over the remaining 33,34 games.
Beat the Angels if you can... Survive if they let you.
If we assume...
…the Rangers have a 66% chance of winning each of their 7 games against the Angels — which is only reasonable if you assume the Rangers really have the Angels number — they’ve got a 5% chance of sweeping.
If you assume a 50% chance of winning each game, it is a 0.7% chance of sweeping.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 22, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Try this
What if the Rangers have a 83 percent chance of winning each of their 7 games against the Angels? Aren’t they 10-2 against the Angels this year?
by Mark from OC on Aug 22, 2009 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions
As assumed above...
With that success rate, 4-game sweep would be 48.2% but no way are we dropping the last home game of the season.
Beat the Angels if you can... Survive if they let you.
I'm getting 48.3%
Must be doing something wrong. But if not then that’s a huge difference. If it’s 48.2% you know whatever…not likely. You bump it up to 48.3% i’m liking the chances. Just not sure which one it is.
I'm just goofin' new boot goofin'

I got 0.482253 and so forth. But we’ll see… off day at home on 9/24 then 3-4-(3) to finish out

The way I've always thought about it.
When you get into extra innings, the only things that really matter are giving your offense a chance to win the game and keeping theirs from the doing the same thing.
If they have the good part of their order coming up, I use FF there if I have more confidence in him than Grilli. Let Grilli take on the next guys if/when you get there.
The whole “wait for the lead” thing means you could have a chance where, like tonight, you wait yourself out of using a good pitcher.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. With the heart of the Rays order up, I suppose it would’ve made sense. Then if you can’t score in the 11th, you send Mathis, who can go multiple innings, out there.

Let’s see what’s better?
Bring in rusty No Frilli Grilli to come in and lose it for you right away or…
Bring in FF to extend the game at least one inning to give your offense one more shot….that turned out well didn’t it? The notion of holding onto your best reliever for that “golden moment” is silly and costs you games.
HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?
Meh
You’re going to need solid work from both Grilli and Frankie anyway.
I don’t think it makes sense to burn Frankie with the game tied, knowing you’re going to have to bring Grilli into the game anyway.

But I want that solid work in the order that makes sense
I want a recently-effective and confident Frankie to go likely one, but possibly more, innings against Evan freaking Longoria and Pena and give the team the best chance to keep playing. As Aquaman noted, Grilli can come in against the lower part of their order if it gets there.
Damn, give yourself the best chance to win an important game. That’s the point, isn’t it?

Baseball is a funny game, and you're almost never going to be definitely right, no matter what you do.
People put so much emphasis on statistics, The Book, or whatever else to tell them how to handle different situations that it makes them lose perspective on what is actually happening in the game.
For example, The Book and conventional wisdom as espoused on this board would tell you that you save your closer (likely one of your best, if not your best reliever) until you get the lead in extra innings. Therefore, you send out a guy like Jason Grilli, Willie Eyre, Jason Jennings, Doug Mathis, or whoever else in the tenth inning to keep your lead.
But that doesn’t take into consideration who you’re facing. In the tenth, Grilli faced Longoria, Zobrist, and Pena, the 3, 4, 5 hitters in the TB lineup. With the game literally on the line, is that who you want out their facing the heart of their order? It shouldn’t be. FF was the play there and would be “saving” the game just as much as if he had the lead going into the inning.
Another example is the Jones for Borbon sub the other night with one out and runners on first and second in the sixth inning. Conventional wisdom probably prompted Wash to do that, to make that move, a veteran righty to face a lefty rather than a rookie lefty.
Again, that didn’t take into consideration the larger context, the fact that the worst possible outcome there is a GIDP, which leaves your best hitter on deck with a RISP and the inning over. Borbon, who would have to hit into the absolute perfect DP to be able to be doubled off, just makes more sense to me, outside of the fact that he has hit like crazy since coming back up and would come around to bat again later in the game. But conventional wisdom, or The Book, or whatever, says PH Jones there.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.

ok...you bring in FF
then in a couple inning we finally get the lead and have to close it out
Grilli then has to do that?
sorry, your ideas just arent right here
REC I totally agree..
on all counts. That would be thinking “outside of the box” something Wash has an aversion to and will never be accused of.
HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?
Terry Francona
doesn’t share your amusement with using a closer on the road in extra innings in non-save situations.

I understand the goal of This Thing is to eventually win the World Series
but you’re absolutely right…who on earth thought in March that this team was capable of what they’re doing (I thought 85 wins and everyone laughed at me)? Who thought that Holland, Feliz, etc etc would be contributing at the level that they have been? Unless they lose every game left in the year, this has been a HUGE success in my book. Remember: JD has been building this team with 2010 and 2011 in mind. If we’re that far ahead of the expected pace at this point in the timeline, imagine how bad ass next year is going to be! I think the rookie SPs still have something left
Holland and Hunter haven’t had great starts lately, but I don’t think they’re tired, but learning to master their craft. Neither is a pure power pitcher or 1-pitch novelty pitcher, but rely an array of pitches. At times, not all of their pitches are going to be working, but they still gut out decent starts. Tonight, Hunter had basically one pitch working, but, most importantly, he didn’t get shelled and kept us in the game (the DPs didn’t hurt). They’re younger than they’ll ever be, and, I think, should have the stamina to last the season.

Really tough loss...
it’s starting to look like this team may not have enough this year. The fact that the AL has some very good teams hurts too. Still not ready to say it’s over though. Still a shot at the WC, but they better get it turned around on this road trip or it could be done by the time they get back to Arlington.
How about Michael F. Young. Talk about carrying a shitty (at times) offense. The guy is doing everything he can at the plate to keep this team in games.
No more Murphy over Cruz. Why does Josh have to be “protected” in the 5 hole after a good month and Murphy who has been very bad in August takes a couple days off and then is hitting third? Murphy is a 4th OFer the rest of the way. Especially on a team with Hamilton, Cruz, Byrd and Borbon. Period.
Bah…shitty game.

Byrd's got a .953 OPS in August
Overall on the season, he’s now one of our best bats. Putting him in the 3 or 4 spot isn’t a bad thing. Murphy on the other hand is ice cold and could use some time off

I’ll start with the most obvious one.
Mauer.

Cabrera is a solid choice I hadn’t considered. Youk, too, though I think he benefits a lot from playing in their ballpark.

If it would have been an error on Blalock (on any of the three throws), the official scorer would have given it to him.
Nobody behind the scenes with the Rangers brought that up or has made it an issue. That is crap you are making up.

The short answer on both throws is yes
If you are Mark Teixeira or Chris Davis or somebody else 6’3 or better. Or a fielder who leaves the bag and doesn’t freeze in pickoff position waiting for the throw. Hank couldn’t reach either throw, and other 1B might also miss them. But catchable, hell yes.

That’s my perception though, and Hank reached but didn’t leave the bag or shift his feet until the ball was gone. I see lots of pickoff attempts not fielded, though, and believe it’s a very minor thing compared to other worries – not just about Hank.

The quote I saw
“Nobody hurts worse than he [Blalock] does, but he’s not swinging the bat the way he wants to,” Washington said. “He tries hard and he’s certainly doing a good job on the defensive end. At least that’s not affecting his game. It’s hard when you know you’ve got it in you.”
Not exactly an “all I care about is his D” quote. Maybe he said that somewhere else, or maybe it is this same thought being paraphrased and/or misinterpreted.

I have the solution on how to bring up CD
Option Murphy. From EG…
OF David Murphy finds himself in another long slump. Murphy, who went 0-for-23 to start the season, was hitless in three at-bats Saturday and his last 13 at-bats. His batting average fell to .260, the lowest it has been since the All-Star break.
Hank and AJ can DH. There would still be 4 OF on the roster so Wash can still sit Borbon vs LHP. He could even continue to DH him if he wishes. Murphy would have to stay down 10 day and could be recalled around Sept 2.

5 Questions over at BBTIA.
Here is number 1:
1. What all-encompassing letter grade would you assign Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington based upon both his clubhouse impact and tactical ability (e.g. lineup construction, bullpen management, et al.)?
I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.
And this:
3. Forget the “if” qualifier with respect to Chris Davis supplanting Hank Blalock at first base — when is it going to happen? Moreover, why hasn’t it happened yet?
I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.
this team has 2 guys playing offense, you just can't win
on the road with 2 guys playing the other teams 9, if Davis is not up real soon (like now) then i am afraid the rangers are all done, and with this tough road trip they may be anyway, but i would like to see what davis could do, Murphy is slumping make up some injury (like fatigue, depression, lameness, anything ) and DL him.
