Scott Feldman!!!!!
Why to post up.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Feldman did his Holland impression
That curve/change thing is why folks can have some hope that he’ll be more than when his stats have said he would regress to.
I agree--I like these young pitchers developing deer-in-the-headlights slow stuff
will take seasoning to master—but bodes well for the future
11 Ks had to have helped close the FIP - ERA gap a good bit.
Might not be looking so “lucky” with a couple more starts like that.
Right
That’s the evidence. The curve, and to a lesser degree the change, becoming legit pitches is the cause.

been preaching this for a while
Feldman’s Curve is a legit pitch, he just needed the confidence to use it more. It sounds like Mr. Stache Maddux has been telling him to for a while, maybe it just took a veteran catcher like pudge calling the game to finally follow up on this.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"

he did give Pudge some luv in that interview.
I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.

I wonder how much credit Pudge gets for today's win
He and Feldman didn’t seem to be on the same page for much of the day. Lots of pitches being shaken off and that sort…
And yet it resulted in Feldman getting 11 strikeouts

really, I dont remember Feldman shaking him off much at all

Feldman shook off a lot of Pudge's calls, actually.
The Rays broadcasters remarked on it, as well.

Well
He shook Pudge off a lot, and had the game of his life
I’m confused
by oc on Aug 23, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Why confused?
Feldman clearly had a good feel for all his pitches today, and his command of his change and curve had been questionable, even coming into today’s game.
Assuming Pudge was going by what (relatively) little knowledge he likely had of Feldman’s stuff, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was calling a more conservative game than Feldman wanted, once Feldman realized what sort of stuff he was bringing….

Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Well I'm sure some of those were called.
Not all of them, but shaking the catcher off can be a tool. It can put doubt in the mind of the hitter of what’s coming.
Don't need to shake off three consecutive signs to do that, though.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Pudge
One impression I had is that he would set up for the cutter to LHB’s on the outside corner of the plate and reach to his right to catch the consistent strikes the cutter produced as it broke into LHB’s. IIRC, the other Rangers catchers seem to set up inside expecting Feldman to break the cutter into their target. I wonder if throwing at an outside target with the cutter instead of an inside target produced more command for Feldman? Sort of a favorable visual target situation.
Good call
I noticed this with the Peña strikeout in the fourth. Pudge had to reach back to the inside.
And as a television viewer, it’s kinda jarring because… I guess I’m expecting Peña to just do something with it, because it seems to be breaking over the heart of the plate, and that’s not where Pudge’s mitt is
by oc on Aug 23, 2009 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Interesting.
I hadn’t thought about it that way.
Feldman’s command of the curve was (also) impressive ~ best I’ve seen from him ~ and that (also) had a lot to do with his strikeout total today…

Still, that was kind of a shitty series overall.

Stop stabbing the Rangers. Its mean. At no point in this season have we been out of the playoff race.
the preceding post was a great success.
Not so much mean as dumb, imho.
Even falling to 3 out would not have been the end of the season.
And with a Boston loss tonight we hold ground despite a tough road series matched against a Boston home series.
People have gotten far too worked up about our playoff chances.
Just enjoy the ride, and party hard if we do make it.

And every loss or individual slump is followed with requests to move players from the lineup and blaming of our incompetent manager
it’s hilarious
The thing about this series..
They were 1 and 2 run games vs a team with a dominant home record. They were pretty uninspired games, but there wasn’t anything deeper in there. now for the series we outscored them…
Last year from august 1st to the 23rd we lost 5 games by 7 or more runs. This year.. 0. They are in almost every game.. sometimes its going to roll your way and you get a great run.. sometimes you are going to lose a few extra close games and scuffle at 500 for a stretch.. whatever. I can deal with that. At least after getting some time after the losses heh.

I may believe...
in a god if CD is in NY on Tuesday.
As I saw someone else post, with the day off tomorrow and the effort from Feldman tonight, I think the Rangers could afford to send down Mathis and get CD back up.
Somehow it needs to happen. I defended Blalock in the first two throws that got away from him earlier in the series. I thought they were on the pitcher. Today Feldman put that ball right on the bag and Hank just flat out missed it. That along with the K with the bases loaded and nobody out were massive fails. It needs to end now.

Thing is, he still has the talent to go on a four- or five-week tear

I really, really hope he does. Because I don’t see this team cutting him at this point, and if he’s on the active roster, I’d imagine Washington keeps playing him quite a bit. Sitting him against left-handers would be a step in the right direction; maybe bringing Davis back up to play first accomplishes that…

If you don’t think injuries (and the games played because of them, and their influence on performance over the course of a season) are important in looking at stats, you’re delusional.
You’re cherry picking in willfully ignoring to look at performances this season, and since the All-Star break, choosing instead to look either at the past three years cumulatively, or the last two weeks alone.

Both he and Hunter have come up big of late.

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
Listening to OKC game just now and the announcers were speculating that today would be last one for CD.
I'm tired of hearing about team chemistry. You are telling me these fuckers wouldn’t like to have a teammate that could actually help the team win, instead of being down 2-4 spots.
Not with a bang, but a whimper?
If so, let’s hope he’s saving it all up for NYC…

EG said in one of his posts last week
(looked for it but don’t recall which one) that a player would have to stay down the full 10 days or until his assigned minor league team’s season is over. OKC and Frisco both end on Sept. 7.

Couldnt we designate Blalock?
Im probably wrong, but couldnt we designate him, put him through waivers, and then on Sept 1 he can ride the bench as a back up?
by FormerLSBUser on Aug 23, 2009 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions
He'd have the option of refusing the assignment and taking FA, which I'd have to assume he'd do.
Surely someone would see his HR total and say, “ooh, shiny!” and stash him on their bench as a lefty power bat.

Won't happen...
as much as we all know it should.
Don’t think the FO or Wash will get rid of a guy who has been with the team for so long. Especially a week before the rosters expand and they can just stick him at the end of the bench,
I can already hear all the BS from some Rangers fans if it were to happen though. How can you DFA a guy who has been with the team for 8 years and has 23 HR’s…blah, blah, blah.

No matter what Davis did down in OKC
The average fan, the one who would be upset cutting Blalock, is only gonna look at his stats from earlier this year and wonder why.

Well, the average Texas fan probably wouldn't agree
with hiring some undocumented alien to come up to Texas and work a decent-paying contract job.
Though that fan might well approve of that guy’s right to carry a concealed firearm. And perhaps the assassin could claim he’d been watching Rangers baseball on television down south, and plead justifiable homicide.

Good quotes from maddon
The Rays were the victims of a perfect game by Mark Buehrle on July 23, but that didn’t stop manager Joe Maddon from calling Feldman’s performance “the best-pitched game against us all year.”
The skipper forgot about Buehrle’s outing when he said that, but when reminded later, he didn’t back off.
“Actually, stuff-wise, [Feldman’s] stuff was much better today,” Maddon said. “Buehrle, we hit a lot of balls right at people. This guy was really good.”

Chris Davis is back!
The Rangers are expected to call up first baseman Chris Davis and add him to the roster when they open a three-game series with the Yankees in New York on Tuesday.
Davis is expected to play regularly at first base, meaning Hank Blalock would likely be a platoon DH or simply be a bat off the bench. Blalock is hitting .180 with a .204 on-base percentage and a ,337 slugging percentage for the month of August.
Davis is hitting .327 with six home runs and 30 RBI in 44 games and 165 at-bats since being sent back to Triple A Oklahoma City at the end of June. He has a .418 on-base percentage and a .521 slugging percentage.
The Rangers would have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Davis but he is coming back to the Major Leagues for the stretch run and manager Ron Washington made it clear that he will be used at first base.
where did you get this?

I said on here the other day that Smoltz would probably go nuts as a Cardinal and people laughed.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
wish we could have gotten him for our bullpen or maybe to bump Nippert back to the pen

Yep.
3 back was my guess for after the 9-game road trip. But Boston will have played 2 more home games than us at that point and have 6 games left against NYY while we’ll have none.
2 back or better will be great, imho.
I am thinking 2 back
when the Rangers go on thier next road trip and they have a chance. I think the Rays and Boston have a tougher Sept schedule than the Rangers.
