I don't get the TR hate
He is what he is, a guy who is only semi-independent from the ballclub answering the type of questions that fans who get 90% of their info about the Rangers from MLB.com ask.
He is not there for pointed, critical analysis of the Rangers. Why people expect this of him is strange to me. He is there to disseminate information to fans, such as “What network will the team be on next year” and general questions from non-expert fans like “Is Elvis good enough for ROY” and “I thought Borbon was supposed to be a great fielder”.
No one expects the White House Press Secretary to give critical analysis of the administration’s actions/plans, but they do expect him to have bland answers to questions on people’s minds. No matter how silly and inane they are.

"answering the type of questions that fans who get 90% of their info about the Rangers from MLB.com ask"
This is a good point. We LSBers don’t understand the usefulness of TR’s mailbag, but it’s probably good for the targeted audience of average fans. The average fan follows the Rangers for relaxation and enjoyment, not as an obsession. The average fan will watch games when they get them on cable and might know about a few prospects that have been mentioned by TR or the tv/radio guys.
We’re the people who watch games on outlaw internet tv sites when we can’t get them on tv. We’re the people who don’t just know a few prospects that Josh Lewin mentioned. We’re the ones who can name the entire Hickory Crawdads starting rotation, and spend hours discussing topics like Wilmer Font’s secondary offerings and the bonuses given to 16 year old Latin prospects.
We ain’t TR’s target audience.

I wouldn't judge him based on mailbags...
I don’t think he’s picking lame questions on purpose.
I don’t read his daily stories, more just his reportage on the roster. And you can appreciate the roster, dirk. Actually I like the short-form Friday columns, too.

My problem with TR is this...
What are the fewest pitches thrown in a complete game if theoretically one could be pitched in 27 pitches?
— Jeremy H., Mesquite, Texas
Not sure, but Kevin Brown, back in 1990, once threw a four-hit shutout over the Twins in 79 pitches. Greg Maddux, while with the Braves in 1997, needed just 78 pitches in a complete-game win over the Cardinals. Bob Tewksbury once had a 75-pitch complete game. Tough to find one lower than that.
I just took 30 seconds to google the question and learned that Charley “Red” Barrett threw 58 pitches in a shutout in 1944. If it is your job to answer these questions, he is really going to be too lazy to look up the answer to a simple question like this? And instead he just lists games he has heard of that were unusually low pitch counts? Ridiculous.
my better is better than your better.

First line in this mailbag:
The Rangers, without going into his long list of exceptional attributes, need Byrd for next year.
What?? Isn’t that just grammatically incorrect?? Is TR talking about a guy whose name is “The Rangers”?

No, it's correctly parsed.
The RAngers need Byrd for next year. Interrupted by the phrase within commas, reflecting pause for comment.

agree
at the very least it’s unnecessarily ambiguous, especially for a guy who’s spent at least a few decades as a professional writer. with a re-read or two its easy to understand what he means, but it’s not clear writing, something that you expect in journalistic works.

but nothing about it is proper English. Pronoun before antecedent and ambiguous modifier in the same sentence? These are pretty standard edits that most writers catch.

wow -- surprised to learn it's grammatically correct
Either way it’s a bizarre and incredibly awkward way to phrase that sentence. Why a professional writer would choose to do that in the first sentence of short piece with just a few hundred words of original, non-reprinted content is beyond me.

i really think
byrd gets knocked around unfairly around here. for a guy that’s been a two and a half win player each year here and good both defensively and offensively, he deserves a little more respect. in terms of dollars, i think re-signing him would make sense, as long as it’s not too many years. however, because of the other options we have in the OF im not sure itd be best to bring him back, considering money is scarce and we have other needs to tend to.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Aug 24, 2009 3:33 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The last part...
…is the main thing.
He’s 31 years old, he can be expected to get worse, not better, going forward, and he’s probably looking at 3-4 years at $5 million per.
I think you get the same performance, offensively and defensively, from a Murphy/Boggs platoon as you do from Byrd, and you get it for $4 million less per year.
So why bring him back?

I wish certain people (especially media personnel) would stop overvaluing Byrd. He is a nice contibutor on a contending team, but getting the same contributions fro pre-arb players is why you build your farm system. Byrd is not the type of player that you give a multi-year 8-figure deal to.

Complete game theoretical question
It is possible to throw a complete game with 25 pitches. You are the visiting team, and the home team shuts you out over your nine half innings, thus does not come to the plate for the bottom of the ninth. You get 24 outs on 24 pitches, but give up one HR. Complete game, 25 pitches, lose 1-0.
Not that it ever would happen.

You could do it with 13 pitches
You are the visiting team’s pitcher.
You give up a home run to the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first.
You retire the next 12 batters on one pitch apiece.
Your team doesn’t score for 5 innings.
After the top of the fifth, it starts raining so hard, the game is called.
You get credit for a complete game.

No official pitches
As per Ray Corio NYT July 4th 1988
No pitches need be made for a complete nine-inning game if both pitchers have their pickoff moves working. Let’s say that every batter for the first eight and a half innings reaches base without facing a pitch. This can happen in a combination of ways: a pitcher, for example, illegally blowing on his hand twice (bringing two balls and a warning), then having the ball slip from his hands and cross the foul line (another ball), then taking more than 20 seconds to deliver the pitch (a ball for unnecessarily delaying the game). But after each batter gets to first base, and before a pitch is made, each pitcher picks off each runner. That’s 27 visiting team players retired after reaching base and 24 home players set down likewise – all without an official pitch.
Now the home team’s first batter in the ninth continues the pattern of reaching base without a pitch, but instead of being picked off, he advances to second when the inevitable pickoff attempt is thrown wildly. He goes to third as the ball is bobbled by the right fielder, who has not had a chance all game, and he scores when the throw from the rusty-armed outfielder goes astray. The run, scored on three errors, ends a pitchless game in favor of the home team, 1-0.

this offseason
with all the money we have coming off the table, and no glaring holes to fill, what do you think about making a run at Matt Holliday? We’d lose our second first rounder but we’ll almost surely gain a comp pick for Byrd, so that’s not a huge loss. Obviously there would be some competition for his services, and he may decide he’d rather stay in AAAA, but I’d love to see him in the middle of our lineup for years to come. Having Cruz, Borbon, Hambone and Holliday taking three OF spots and the DH spot, with Murphy in the mix as well, would make our OF a legitimate force, and its probably the clearest and quickest way to upgrade our team.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
by clark on Aug 24, 2009 3:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
wouldn't he cost a first rounder, instead of a second?
And while I like the thought, and it would open up some trade possibilities with another of the OF, it just doesn’t seem remotely possible unless we have new ownership.

perhaps
and i can’t speak to the number of players who will be arb eligible for the first time, which is sure to inflate payroll, but we have over 20m coming off the books in Padilla, Blalock, Benoit, Jennings, Jones and Eddie and all but Eddie have pretty clear internal replacements. Millwood gets an extra mill next year, but we should also (theoretically) have some extra cash from a) not signing Purke (this might have been offset somewhat by the Pudge acquisition) and b) seeing a large bump in fan attendance this year. In short, I think we may have around 12m or so to comfortably offer him annually, and perhaps more if Daddy Hicks or his replacement will pony up “for the right player”.

I don’t want to go out and sign Matt Holliday but at the same time I’m a bit concerned about assuming that significant internal improvements will occur, although yes it should.
I don’t think the Rangers should do anything major on the offensive side of things. Smoak will be a rookie and Davis a second-year guy, I want them to play and get experience and I will hope they will be offensive upgrades compared to this year (they most likely will be).

not bad, but
im guessing it is buoyed mostly by slugging, while the OBP is pretty weak. some more stat-minded folks can probably speak better to the degree to which OBP is underweighted in OPS than i can. .838 is still not bad though.
As far as improving our DH production next year, I have been advocating a pursuit of Thome. I have no clue what kind of market will take shape for him or for FA in general or what our financial situation will look like, but aside from looking at Sheets, I cant think of a better way to spend what limited money we will probably have.

Improvement
I think there’s a good bit of internal improvement to be had. That said, eventually I’d like to see them capitalize on the two first baseman in a deal to upgrade the offense. If Davis is able to drive his value back up some in September, something like Davis, Teagarden, and a Beaven-type pitching prospect for a DH who can really hit would be something I’d pursue if possible.

1B
I don’t think it’s clear whether Davis or Smoak is better. Before this season, I think the feeling was that Smoak was better, but then Davis proved to be outstanding at 1B the first half of the season. That said, Smoak was voted the best defensive 1B in the PCL this year.
It is clear that they are both pretty good defensively, at a position where there isn’t generally a lot of defensive talent. That’s one of the reasons I’d like to see the Rangers explore moving Davis (plus other assets) for a really good hitter to use at DH.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 24, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd like to know which one has the better range
Perhaps it was his offensive terribleness spilling over into the field, but the way Davis’s UZR numbers plummeted before he went down makes me wonder if most of his defensive value isn’t in his picking/stretching abilites. If that’s the case, I’d be interested to know how exactly Smoak is percieved to stack up to him range and receiving wise.

FWIW
Quick Pitch on MLB Network just had a “Who’s the AL Cy Young frontrunner right now?” conversation. The usual suspects (Greinke, Halladay, Beckett) were discussed, then at the end, one of them said, “Well, you gotta throw in Scott Feldman, look what he’s doing.” The other three kind of looked at each other and finally said, “He’s in there… he’s at the back, but like you said, there are no frontrunners. If he keeps having 11 strikeout nights, we’ll talk about him.”
So, he’s in the conversation at the very least. Pretty cool.

that's fine
and i know that the guy wasn’t saying anything like feldman is a favorite, just that he has to enter the convo. i’m just saying that feldman probably woulnd’t crack the top 7 or 8 unless a couple of those top guys are on the same team and would split votes or something
a list of guys that could get to 18 wins:
CC – 15-7, 3.59 ERA, 148 Ks, 1.13 Whip
beckett – 14-5 3.65 ERA, 154 Ks, 1.13 Whip
scooter – 13-4 3.87 ERA, 86 Ks, 1.25 Whip
jared weaver – 13-4 3.89 ERA, 143 Ks, 1.22 Whip
justin verlander – 13-7 3.29 ERA, 204 Ks, 1.15 Whip
roy halladay – 13-6 2.78 ERA, 151 Ks, 1.11 Whip
and greinke is 11-8 but plays for 47-76 Royals but has 182 Ks in 173 IP with 2.44 ERA and 1.14 WHIP
feldman is probably 6th out of those possible 18 win guys. but there will be guys to finish ahead of him with 15-17 wins.
i’m happy with his performance this season though.

Think about how crazy this conversation might have seemed in, say, 2007
Scott Feldman getting some Cy Young love?
If we could transport ourselves back in a Delorean and tell our past selves that we would be talking about this, how improbable would that have sounded? It would have been like the scene in Back to the Future III where Doc is telling the old men in 1885 how people drive cars and only walk and run “for fun.”

Hate as much as you’d like on what he asked of us, but none of the offers we heard would make me trade Roy Halladay.
Guys like Halladay don’t come on the market very often.
He went out and tried to see if someone would meet the price he thought his franchise ace was worth, no one was willing to do it, so he held on.
I don’t see why he’s an idiot or a fool.
If he’d taken the pu-pu platter Philly was offering like Shapiro did, we’d be ripping him for that, too.

what is worth more, 1 more year of roy halladay or a few guys who may be worth tons more down the road…?…not to mention the money
also, people like to say we robbed Atlanta in the tex deal, but what JP was asking for blows it away…we didnt get 2 top 10 prospects…or 4 in the top 100…
the deals he was asking for were a joke and everyone knows it

Halladay
The Indians got 3 guys in BA’s preseason top 70 prospects in baseball, and the 4th guy was considered the key player in the deal, in return for Cliff Lee.
I think JP had every reason to expect a better package for Halladay.
by Darrell McKown on Aug 24, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hardly.
You can’t just say “Well _______ got _________ for _________, so I want that times two for my guy,” there obviously has to be demand for your supply. JP overplayed his hand by asking not just for the moon, but Mars and Jupiter as well.
Whatever, I’m happy we didn’t do it and give up Feliz or Holland.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.

I don't think asking for Drabek, Taylor and Happ was asking for the Moon, Mars and Jupiter.
Halladay is a true ace.
Plus he’s uber-beloved up in Toronto.
Why deal him unless you’re getting a great package?
People around here are totally irrational about this because JP asked a ton from us and so now he’s the bad guy cause he (GASP!) wanted our precious young beans in return for his paltry Ace.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m gladder than a fuckstick on a Tuesday that we didn’t pull the trigger on that deal, but that’s because it wasn’t the right deal for us, not because JP was being an unreasonable ass like Smarty McSoundargument up there seems to be implying with his retort of “bullshit”.

from just a form and tack kind of standpoint, but yeah, I don’t blame him for shopping Halladay and not accepting any of the offers. A guy like that should only be traded if the offer is really great. Shapiro played his hand cheaply, Ricciardi just teased but that’s better than taking too little for an ace.
