MILB Thread 8/24
ARZL: 9PM - Melo? - I see Melo as a mini-Font. His peripherals so far this year are eerily similar. Also, Tomas Telis, i like this kid, hitting 320ish, hopefully his walks go up to where they were in the DSL at some point, but the ability to square it up at 18 is nice.
Spokane: 830 - B Tullis - Alot to like about this Spokane squad, two good hitting prsopects (Mendonca and Velasquez) and three SP to watch. Tullis is one of them.
Hickory: 6 -N. Ramirez - Already through 4IP, 4Ks/1BB 0 ER and now 5Ks in 5 IP as i post this... and once again the Dirkatron Reversal is in play.
Bak: 9 - Tatusko - Meh, i only really like following Bake when they have Gomez or King Richard on the hill.
Frisco: 7- Ballard - ugh, not much to see here
OKC: 7 - Benson - yuk, ok this thread sucks now

don't look now, or look, I don't care
but Neil Ramirez is starting to heat up. Five scoreless with 5 Ks today, three hits and a walk for less than one runner/inning. That’s what we want to see. Over his past five outings, he’s gone 20 innings and given up 6 ER and struck out 24.

it pretty much concides with the excessive Dirk hate
much like the recent Christian Santana explosion… basically, whoever dirk hates the most at any certain time ends up going on a tear.

Can Dirk issue a profanity-riddled tirade against Chris Davis and Andruw Jones tonight?

At least I can spell Cristian Santana's name right, bee-otch!!!
Heh, j/k.
Honestly I’m in awe of my powers.
I’m trying not to overdo and anger whatever reverse-jinxing Gods I have on my side right now.
I’m saving my reverse-karma points.
If we make the playoffs I’m gonna put out a 77,000 word missive of negativity and vitriol the likes of which the universe has never seen.

Of all the great things that come with a playoff berth, this might be the tops
The very thought of a Dirkatron rant like this has me practically giddy.

Over his past five outings, he’s gone 20 innings and given up 6 ER and struck out 24.
And walked 10.

Hey, if he can turn into a RH'd CJ Wilson, I'd take that shit in a second.

According to major league sources, at least a few teams are interested in having him in that role, but you just can’t have a guy named Tuglett in a major league clubhouse.

"no rules" Nam
follows him up with a scoreless inning. I’m anxious to see what he does next year as well. High A has pissed on my high hopes for many of our relief prospects…here’s hoping nam is the exception.

I don't think the fastball will ever let him be a versatile bullpen arm, but his herk-jerk motion and that curve of his makes him a pretty good bet to make the show as a LOOGY, imo.
Health permitting, of course.

I like the Player of the Day page idea
DiFazio is someone to watch. Nice BB/K ratio so far.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
by RangerMad on Aug 24, 2009 7:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yea, i figured id throw it in there
I like Faz because it seems like we picked him up with the idea that his injuries made him under-scouted and better than where he was taken. He’s definitely got good baseball skills it would seem, he’s extremely patient, and he definitely seems to have power. Those two things alone are big positives as he plays a critical defensive position.

The usual old big-program college player in SS league caveat applies, of course.. but, yah. He's looking legit.
Nice spread between his avg and obp, a little bit of pop and apparently he’s a great receiver and works well with young pitchers.
It’s always nice to have a good pipeline of capable-esque catchers coming up, even if all they have is backup ceiling like Hogan, Pina and probably DiFazio.

Metcalf is pissed at Omaha
after just walking across the diamond in ultimate pissed-offness, he has HR twice against his former team.

Tug Hulett.
.291/.384/.478 for an .863 ops.
The kid can hit a little.
I still think he could help a club in a utility role if someone would give him a shot.

The 2009 California League playoff race
The first one that can explain it to me gets a wad of bacon and cheese pressed between two breaded boneless chicken breasts and a big hot steaming cup of TYVM.
by shroomer on Aug 24, 2009 10:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I can explain it.
10 teams.
2 divisions.
Split season.
6 teams make the postseason as follows:
Winners in each division in each half make the playoffs (4 teams), plus the owner of the next-best overall record in each division is a wildcard (2 more). First-half winner gets a first-round bye regardless of comparative records.
BUT!
If same team wins both halves, there’s two wild cards based on overall record. Since San Jose is going to win both halves, both Modesto and Bakersfield (collapse notwithstanding) will make the postseason.
I didn’t fully understand it myself until Bako’s official scorer explained it to me. Not only is it a really dumb system, but there’s no way to know who’ll make the postseason by looking at the online standings. Unless you know how the system works.
Now that I’ve divulged this information, I have to kill you.

A couple of short clips I shot in AZ and California
from my photobucket…
Robbie Erlin makes a pickoff throw to second: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m71/lonestardugout/?action=view¤t=MOV00690.flv
A pitcher (can’t recognize who) works on an intentional walk: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m71/lonestardugout/?action=view¤t=MOV00698.flv
Story behind that video: AZL Rangers manager Bill Richardson announced “eighth inning, runners on second and third, two outs, and Decker is up”
Decker refers to AZL Padres hitter Cody Decker, who leads the league with a .356 batting average, 13 home runs, and 58 RBIs in 49 games.
Matt Lawson, Davis Stoneburner, and Ian Gac work on turning double plays: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m71/lonestardugout/?action=view¤t=MOV00810.flv
Mike Bianucci takes BP: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m71/lonestardugout/?action=view¤t=MOV00819.flv

Kind of cool that
he could see Frisco next season. Of course Murphy was in that boat this year.

speaking of promotions
what do Evan Reed and Ryan Falcon have to do to get out of Bakersfield? I know Falcon isn’t really even a prospect, but the poor guy has K’ed one per inning for two years straight and put up decent numbers, let the poor kid get out of our system’s hellhole.

continuing a theme
Evan Reed needs to stop walking people so much.
BAK bullpen arms aren’t exactly setting Frisco on fire this year, for what that’s worth.

Yeah
I wouldn’t say that Reed has necessarily dominated in Bakersfield, at least statistically. He has a 1.52 WHIP, for goodness sakes.
