Who Goes to Make Room for Chris Davis?
Evan Grant runs through the potential candidates to be dropped from the 25 man roster to make room for Chris Davis, when Davis is activated for today's game.
I'm guessing the move will be to put Andruw Jones on the disabled list. Evan Grant says that Jones has a hamstring strain he's been playing through, which makes him going to the d.l. and coming back fresh in a couple of weeks the most viable option, I think. And I can't see the Rangers dropping a pitcher from the pitching staff right now, given the recent struggles and the fact they are about to face a potent Yankee offense.

I don't know what the right answer is
but AJones has a .360 obp v LH pitching. Does it make sense to put him on the DL?
With Davis in the line-up back in June, the offense was impotent when facing LH pitching.
Maybe Teagarden / Pudge (who hit well v LH pitching) playing while Salty is gone helps the issue.
I’d send down Borbon (or DL Murphy) and make Hank F / AJones the DH.

I can't see the Rangers dropping Jones
or Blalock for that matter. A DL trip for one or the other is the only thing that makes sense (though the Rangers kind of blew it by letting it known that they planned since Sunday that Davis would be coming up)
While we can sit here and point to either of them and say “they’ve been a weight on the club for too long now,” the clubhouse ramifications of dropping two guys who have played significant roles on the club all season – Jones has been a good rebound story (though not as good as the Sammy Sosa saga, which was tarnished by grumpy Jason Botts lovers) considering who he was 5 years ago and where he was a year ago, and Blalock has too long a history with the club.
Come playoff time, if that is an issue, the players will understand taking the best 25 man roster possible, and that roster should not include either Jones or Blalock. But I don’t think you throw anyone onto the curb a week before playoff rosters set.

Hypocrisy points to ajm for saying per Blalock … “It makes me sad to say” . Nary a mention of the 28-19 record with Hank F playing every day.
Newberg also confirmed that Salty was/is “JD’s Boy”. No shit, Sherlock. The playing time doled out to him although he sucked this year was kind of a hint.
And also, no criticism whatsoever at the Ranger FO (and especially Tom Hicks) for taking Purke. Newberg even tried to spin it as a positive!!!!

Draft and then sign the very best player available to you.

If Strausberg or Smoak is the best available pitcher/player available and he falls to your team, you draft him and then sign him.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
What if that player asks for a crazy stupid high signing bonus
Should we just wilt to any players demands?
Its not like we only offered chump change to this guy we offered what would have been the 5th highest signing bonus in the entire draft, higher than some guys who were rated higher than Purke.
Your belief is if Strasburg was there we should have just drafted him and given him the 50 million he asked for off the top?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year

You clearly are too stupid to answer a simple question
Do you even understand the concept of signability? Not every draft pick gets signed. Every year, some prospects hold out for more money or go back to school or whatever.
If the most talented player available is a player that may not sign with the team he is drafted by (either because he wants way too much money or may go back to school), then do you draft that player?
You have to choose. Either you prioritize getting the best talent available or you prioritize getting every draft pick signed. You can’t have it both ways. This whole “draft then sign the very best player available to you” mantra is a fantasy, and you know it.
if what the rumors were true
of Purke’s request around 7, then I definitely think you don’t sign him, especially if he doesn’t come down from that figure. 4M would have been top 6 money for a 14th pick. He wanted too much money. Pitchers are very risky in the first place. You have to weigh some of the risks with the reward. and the risks were too high.
i bet Josey plays poker and loses all his money on the first hand.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
But if most HS pitchers who have unreasonably-high demands sign anyways...
then I definitely think you don’t sign him, especially if he doesn’t come down from that figure.
How are you supposed to know if he’s going to come down from that figure? If your policy is to take the best talent available, then you draft Purke and hope he decides to settle for a more reasonable, although still very high, number. Purke never did that, but to me that’s a risk worth taking.
I think every ML team makes the assumption
that a player will lower his demands a bit once drafted. Not many players ask for a ridiculously high offer and then don’t come down from that at all
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Josey at poker
I would dream of having him at a poker table.
He wouldn’t lose on the first hand. He’s the guy who knows all of the basics and all of the “common sense” strategy. But he’s also the guy who will get something in his head about you and never let it go. You bluff him on the first matchup, he calls you on it and wins, and for the rest of the night he thinks that you’re holding nothing and just keeps handing you money. By the end of the night, you’ve got all his cheddar, and yet he insists that you know nothing about poker.

Why would anyone start David Murphy over Nelson Cruz in a pennant race given how each has played this year? It makes zero sense to me. Also, if you’re going to play Murphy and Borbon why not DH Murphy and put Borbon in LF? Is it just because of his arm? How about the fact that Borbon can cover about twice as much ground as Murphy. Shouldn’t that play a little part into the decision making as well?
What more does Nellie have to do to prove hs is a everday COF? Again look at his splits. He’s hitting better against RH pitching. You don’t sit him in place of Murphy. Period.

I think Nellie is traded this offseason
It just seems that something about him rubs too many people in power or “in the know” the wrong way. I don’t get it either – if you ask me there are only 4 guys you need to be in this lineup every day, and Nellie Cruz is one of them. But something about him seems to antagonize this club.

Evan Grant @ August 24th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
@ALL: Got to play Murphy sometime and against a right-hander. It’s either vs. Joba or Burnett. I like the idea of spacing out the lineup with as many lefties as possible against Joba to make Girardi think about when he wants to go to a lefty reliever. ‘Course if you play Cruz against Joba, it probably negates the left-handed relievers altogether. I’m not wedded to Murphy here. Originally had Cruz in the lineup, but thought I’d need to put Murphy in one of the games there. It was either Tuesday or Thursday.

On using Murphy vs. using Cruz. WTH? Hasn’t anyone checked Cruz’ splits vs. LHP? I understand most comments, points of view, etc. and accept those I don’t get but using a RH-LH "who are you facing" rationale is lazy and short sighted. Cruz (as mentioned above) is the second best overall hitter on the roster, the best defensive OF’er based on statistical ranking, the best power bat on the squad, and only (only!) fails against finesse lefty pitchers. I don’t know where the Murphy endorsement comes from, but both Evan and Ron Washington seem to slot Cruz as an afterthought. What is wrong with this picture? Is he too Dominican, should he have gone to Baylor, is there jealousy because he’s a good cook, did he fail to put in six years of apprenticeship to earn his chops, or what? It seems just out of kilter to not put your best power bat against RHP into a middle of the lineup slot against good right hand pitchers.
OK, I guess I need to work on getting more worked up over this. Maybe I haven’t been paying close enough attention. How many games against RHP have the Rangers started Murphy while sitting Cruz this season? Have there been more than I’m remembering?

I count 10 games this season in which Murphy's started and Cruz has not.
(That doesn’t include the 15 games Cruz missed on the DL, of course.)
And based on a quick check of the box scores, Murphy’s put up pretty decent stats for those 10 games, overall.

Personally, I don't agree with Evan's lineup, no.
But I was responding to chadallenfan’s post above, which appeared to me to ask if that was the official Rangers lineup for tonight.
On Grant’s lineup: I get it; even if I don’t agree with it. I do agree with Evan that it’d be good for the Rangers to find Murphy a chance to break out of this slump in the next several games, and that has to come against a right-hander, because Murphy’s hopeless against lefties.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
What about this don't I get?
Got to play Murphy sometime and against a right-hander.
No you don’t. Not with Hamilton and Cruz on this team, Byrd as hot as he has been, and Borbon playing the way he has since coming up. Murphy shouldn’t be starting. You don’t sit .266 / .338 / .544 for .260 / .339 / .426. Especially hen Murphy as really struggled lately and Cruz hits RH pitching better than LH pitching. Not to mention Cruz is the better OFer.Cruz is an everyday OFer on this team. Or at least he should be.
Cruz sat 3 or 4 games in a row earlier in the year when he was struggling, so why can’t Murphy do the same?
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
If Murphy sits today, it would in fact result in him sitting at least three games in a row.
Would you start him Thursday, then? If not, when do you play him?
I’m not saying I agree with Grant’s lineup, by the way ~ I don’t, but I won’t be terribly upset if Washington’s looks similar. I do think Grant made his reasoning clear, and there’s no apparent hatred of Cruz there. The reaction to his post seems a little overwrought.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
When do you play him?
When one of the regular OFers needs a day off. That’s what you do with your 4th Ofer.
Byrd has played in 50 something straight games. When he needs a day off against a RH pitcher that’s when I play Murphy. Perhaps that would be Thursday.
You don’t sit Nelson Cruz for David Murphy when you are in a playoff chase. Now isn’t the time to say you have to play everyone.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Giving Byrd a day off for Murphy makes a lot of sense to me.
Not much foregone there against righties ~ makes more sense than sitting Byrd.
But I still don’t think that makes Grant a Cruz-hater, or renders his position impossible to understand…

3. Jack Armstrong, RHP, Vanderbilt (2011): Vandy’s coaching staff deserves a ton of credit for turning Armstrong into a probable first-rounder for the 2011 draft, since in high school he had a fringy fastball, a violent delivery, and poor body control for a kid with an athletic body. Armstrong is now 92-96 with an above-average changeup, his arm action is short, and he’s much more coordinated. If he develops even a solid-average breaking ball he’ll be a top-five pick.
