Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

God that was horrible

I’m watching the game at the bar with some friends and they notice Jennings. Everyone being familiar with the Rockies, they make the pointed observation of “your team has a former Rockie on the staff? WTF?” Jesus that was humiliating.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

You know that phrase....

“If you arn’t comfortable using him in that situation, he probably shouldn’t be on the team.”?
Yeah…

But anyway, I don’t even particularly care about putting him into the game though.
That game was 99% done with the yankees 8-9 guys and 2 on none out (even a good reliever likely allows one or both runs to score), two of our late inning guys were unavaiable, and even if Nippert can keep them from scoring too many runs I wouldn’t bet on him going even 5 innings so a full strength bullpen tomorrow will be needed rather than wasting CJ on this game.

Anyway no fork shall be placed in the rangers yet, but they can’t afford to fall much further behind than this. Need a big performance tomorrow.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 26, 2009 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

You're conceding this game down two runs in the seventh? Really?

Would you do that in the playoffs? Would you run JJ out there in any situation in the playoffs?

Because that’s basically where we are right now.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. by Aquaman, Esq. on Aug 26, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Well JJ wouldn't even be on the team if I had control, so no I wouldn't run JJ out there.

But…

Frankie, Feliz: Unavailable
CJ: Even if you use him while down 2 its probably in the 8th, and it was righties coming up so he wasn’t a great option to come in and K guys to get out of it vs them.
Grilli: Torched last night, looked bad in both recent outings… having pitched yesterday probably better to leave him out of the game too.
Mathis: Marginally better but yeah problably better to go to him first.

O’day: Ok, thinking about it… O’days chances to get double plays or strikeotus to get out of it are probably reasonable. He was probably the right play, and he has been great back to back days and only pitched to 1 guy anyway.

Yea, i probably wouldn’t have put JJ in either, bad decision. I just don’t care that much because the game didn’t look good at that point and regardless of the reliever was probably going to get worse with the 2 on none out situation. Its a silver lining to have everyone good ready to go tomorrow anyway at least.

the preceding post was a great success.

As I already asked,

Who gets the axe for bringing in Jennings in a close game with runners on base? Jennings is One of, if not THE worse at allowing inherited runners to score in all of baseball. Yet the Rangers brought him in anyways.

I was pleasantly surprised to win yesterday with Mehwood. I don’t have high expectations of Nippert. I guess taking 1 of 3 @ NY isn’t too bad. Winning the series would have been sweeeeeet, though.

The real kick in the nuts is that Boston and LAAA (and probably TB) all won tonight.

Interesting. So this loss was all Jennings but no Holland?

Funny what a pass some players get here.

Jennings sucked, but Holland was also his ~5-run ERA 2009 self tonight as well.

Anyhoo, I think we lose tomorrow but win 2 of 3 in Minnesota. Boston sweeps Chicago and takes 2 of 3 from Toronto. That leaves us 3 back (in the loss column) after the road trip… just as I said I figured would be the case before it started.

And I’ll happily take that. Because it will mean we survived a tough stretch (during which Boston had a 10-game home stretch) and then we have this over the first 2 weeks of September:

Texas
TOR (4) (none of which will be Halladay)
@ BAL (3)
@ CLE (3)
SEA (3)
OAK (3)

Boston
@ TB (3)
@ CWS (4)
BAL (2)
TB (3)
LAA (3)

Texas: 11-5
Boston: 7-8

All tied up with 17 games left to play.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 26, 2009 10:09 PM CDT reply actions

Seriously?

Let me explain the differences between Holland and Jennings:

1. Holland pitched better than his line indicates. The Yankees hammer lefties, but aside from the pitch he left up for Posada, he didn’t pitch all that badly. Holland is young, and learning. He’s going to make mistakes. Jennings, on the other hand, is a veteran who should have more pitching “wisdom” under his belt than Holland. Yet he marched right in and gave us no reason to trust him or his experience ever again.

2. Holland is undoubtedly an integral part of this team’s future. What he does now is important, but learning and building for the long term is also important in his appearances. Jennings, to have a future with this club, needs to show something now. And he’s not doing it in any way, shape, form or fashion.

If you can’t see the difference between mistakes by a highly talented rookie starter and mistakes by a mediocre veteran middle reliever, well, I wonder how you found your way to a computer.

More than one person defended the start as being “a good game” and “better than the line indicates”.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 26, 2009 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, it was

Jennings shitting the bed/sucking a dick made Holland’s start look a lot worse. Less bed-shitting and dick-sucking by Jennings and Holland would have a 6IP/4ER line, which is a lot better than the Scott Lucas/Newberg Report “disaster start” of ER equaling or exceeding IP.

by Inkara1 on Aug 26, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It really is funny how this guy can do no wrong.

Any other pitcher has a 6.00 ERA game in a loss and they would get trashed for it here.

And as far as inherited runners go, the fairest thing to do would be to at least give Holland one of the runs as it was 2 on with 0 outs. Even very good relievers can’t be blamed too heavily for letting a run score after being handed that on the road against the best offense in baseball.

So you have a 7.50 ERA night. Solid.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 26, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Holland had 3 straight starts before this with ERA under 2.00

He pitched a good game considering he didn’t have the control that makes him so good. He pitched further into the game than Milly did. If Jennings wouldn’t have sucked so bad Holland would have had a fairly decent line in Yankee Stadium. You’re such a fucking beating.

6 IP: 7 H, 2 HR, 3 BB...

6 earned runs, 9.00 ERA.

But like I said, it’s Derek Holland so “the line doesn’t tell the story”. As always.

Funny how that works.

Some people here have a really hard time separating future potential from current results, imho.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 26, 2009 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

It's worth noting that...

had Jason Jennings not allowed all his interited runners to score, then Holland’s line would have been 6 IP, 7H, 2HR, 3BB, 4 earned runs. That’s only one run more than a “quality start” line.

He also had four strikeouts.

The point of taking out Holland for a reliever is to keep those runs from scoring.

by Inkara1 on Aug 26, 2009 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Even with that selective scenario, that's still a 6.00 ERA game.

When you give up 6 runs you don’t usually win.

But Holland gets credit for the runners for a reason, fwiw. He let them get to 1st/2nd with 0 outs.

by Texas_Dawg on Aug 26, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

A 6.00 ERA looks a lot better than a 9.00 ERA

I didn’t say his line was great or outstanding. I only said his line looks worse than his actual pitching performance because Jason Jennings shit a dick while sucking the bed.

Chris Davis is not the OBP monster that torches LH pitching that we have lacked all year.

Davis struck out twice

popped to 3B on a first pitch and got an infield hit on a ball that a dinosaur like Jeter could still field.

There was no progress from Davis v LH pitching and there was a defensive problem on a play at 1B that LSB would have torched Hank for not making.

If Davis can’t hit LH pitching (or should I say, shits the bed with another .143/.491 line) and plays every day the rest of the season, we’re not going to the playoffs.

Need to go 23-14 the rest of the way.

On August 8th, 2001Barry Bonds went 0-3 with three (3!) strikeouts. What a stupid worthless player that guy was! (he hit 72 steroid-fueled HR’s that year).

Did Bonds throw down a 1 for 22 that season?

A 3 for 44? A 7 for 60?

Bonds probably had an OBP of .600+ that season (off the top of my head) and if he went 0 for 3 one night in 2001, who really cares?

Sometimes you win by losing

Had to miss the game tonight—glad I did. It’s amazing the different perspective and lack of stress one gets reading about the game, rather than watching it. We needed a gem from Dutch, and once we didn’t get it, the game was over. Good move by Wash to circle the wagons and hold back DOD, CJ, and FF for the rubber game. As Adam said about a week ago, quoting the indomitable Joe Schultz, “Let’s pound some Budweisers and get ’em tomorrow.”

I would have liked to have seen Mathis instead of JJ.

I understand when you’re down 4-2 at The Stadium that it’s probably not going to happen and the need to save the bully but Mathis has been forgotten about and JJennings has been epic fail – OBP may be near .500 against him in August.

BTW, CDavis screwed up a play at 1B as well (Holland later picked Cano off).

DFA Jennings, move Nippert to the pen, and plug Penny into the rotation. Starting pitching situation would still be about the same and our bullpen would be better.

Read the article.
The Red Sox need a 40-man roster spot for newly acquired reliever Billy Wagner, and Tim Wakefield’s fine performance Wednesday night — seven innings, one run, three hits — should have the club feeling confident about dumping a pitcher. The 31-year-old Penny has a 5.61 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 24 starts this season and has expressed a lack of interest in joining Boston’s bullpen corps. It’s all specualtion and rumor at this point, but a release or DFAing does make some sense. Keep in mind that he can no longer be traded.

If he’s released or DFA’d then they have no say.

Jeff and Matthew at LL don’t allow the kind of nonsense that goes on unchecked from Josey and Texas Dawg.

One person threatening to leave, especially someone whose not a core community member like myself, probably won’t change anything. But know there must be dozens of lurkers who probably feel the same, and in the long run you are losing readers and page views by letting this sort of stuff go on.

LSB is a laughingstock around SBN?

All the sites have their little quirks. Just around the AL West (all popular sites), I think A’s Nation is hurt by what seem like a dozen moderators, its very cozy attitude towards Beane and strange infatuation with dumb, meaningless comics. Lookout Landing’s harsh enforcements give the place a feel of a strict private boys school where all the kids are uber-repressed and just waiting for someone to do anything at all controversial, act horrified and run to Jeff hoping for a ban.

And Halos Heaven is just a ridiculous joke for reasons that don’t need to go into. At least the crazies here aren’t actually the people who run the site. Or maybe you think posting police suspects addresses online and accusing the league of having biases every time your team loses is actually a way to run a blog well.

That’s a fair points — we all have our weird issues. Personally, I’m almost always impressed with the quality of dialog at LL, but it’s possible that they’ve gone too far to the point of shutting out some non-trolling voices from the conversation. I don’t follow their stuff enough to really make a call on that.

HH is a bad blog.

I just wish LSB wasn’t so tolerant of trolls. I’m willing to try flagging comments, staying out of the angry responses, and seeing where that gets us.

by alon91 on Aug 27, 2009 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions

LL is far from repressed

They’re like the super-exclusive private school where all the kids amuse themselves by trying to outdo each other with their own rankness and farce, yet get extremely snobbish toward outsiders.

LSB’s closely-nit group of regulars has kind of trended that way in the past year or so as well, as the expansion of the site has brought in a virtual conveyor belt of horrible posters. I think that’s pretty much how LL got to the point they’re at, myself and sometimes Adam’s tolerant policies are pretty much one of the few things that separates us from LL these days.

That said, you have to draw the line somewhere, and when you’ve got two entitiees such as TexasDawg and Josey (and Finnerty has trended this way as well), who have proven over a pretty large sample size that they live simply to shit all over the site, you’ve got to drop the hammer.

My take

was that the team would be better off with Hank F playing instead of CDavis – and I was right.

Can the team play better than 28-19 the rest of the season without him? I honestly don’t know however, if CDavis throws down another .143/.491 v LH pitching while playing every day it will be time to get out the forks.

It’s not just lurkers. Some of the people who have been here longer than just about everyone (not me, but tricer and Cahill in particular) have voiced their displeasure at the apathetic nature the mods have adopted regarding Josey and the legions that take the bait. It’s an annoyance for me only because I view this site on an iphone most of the time, so it’s slightly harder to filter out the nonsense.

What I find hilarious is that AJM discourages people from arguing with Josey on the AM threads (as if there’s something sacred about the AM threads), but he himself takes just about every opportunity to engage in circular debate with him everywhere else on the site.

And while I don’t post a ton, I’ve been at LSB since day one (UID: 36, thank you very much).

With the Rangers having a good season, these problems have exacerbated. I pretty much know Adam’s stance on moderation (he won’t do it unless it’s racism or something along those lines) and I couldn’t agree with him less on that point.

The best message boards are sternly moderated. Note this does NOT mean there are no disagreements, all groupthink (aka “lockstep”). It’s quite the opposite in fact, it’s just done in a cordial, respectful and sensible way.

that said i cant stand trolls, particularly outsiders coming on our turf. but i am also in the belief that texas dawg and josey take it to far. josey’s ok at times but then other times it’s not even funny that he’s trying to provoke a response.

Yeah

First, AJM is not exactly innocent in the “why every thread degrades to an argue with Josey thread” problem. And I am 100% sure that the problem is the people responding to JW, not JW himself.

I find nothing particularly offensive about Josey. He’s opinionated and stubborn, like many of us here. The difference is that most people when called a moron (fair or not) for their statements, they quietly move on; Josey just argues back with the same original logic. And the same people go back and repeat the whole process. At least JW is actually trying to make an argument (silly though they may be at times) and not trying to lay straw man logic traps and make 8th grade insults.

There is enough strong discussion points that people here shouldn’t be trying to debate with those people whose views they don’t respect. A fool may say dumb things, but only a fool gets upset about what another fool says.

Disagree

The end game here would seem to be to run off anyone who doesn’t conform to the group think of most posters. I find the comments by Josey interesting even if I don’t agree all the time. A lot of the time I do agree, particularly with respect to Wash being a weak manager and JD being a weak GM. I also felt that the team was not going to contend this year and am, thankfully, wrong on that account.

I think people do have a right to say what they want unless it violates some basic standards, such as outright racism. A lot of posters here go into attack mode pretty fast when someone dares to challenge the conventional wisdom of the room. It’s just a baseball blog and if you run off all the people you disagree with it’s going to be one really boring site.

Doesn't seem that way

I try to post thoughtful comments, I just don’t agree with a lot going on in Rangerland. When I have made comments in agreement with JW I often get replies suggesting that “we get a room” or other demeaning attacks that do not address the issue/comment. However, I’ve also had a few good lengthy exchanges about the organization that were pretty interesting and insightful, so I keep coming back. I guess I am inclined to respect JW (again don’t agree with a some of his opinions) because I know that he, like most of us in here, is a hard core Ranger fan and supporter.

I am easily among the top 10 most knowledgable posters on this site

in regards to this Ranger team and past Ranger teams. Within that top 10, there is no number one because this is major league baseball – nobody knows everything but several of us know quite a bit and make no mistake, I am within that inner circle of knowledge.

I don’t have a direct pipeline to the Ranger GM office but that’s a good thing because once again, I don’t owe him anything.

When he screws up I don’t have to make excuses for him and my criticism of him is passionate because he’s in bed with the DMN and several other (not ajm) influential opinion-makers in DFW.

I’ve been accused of being a troll, yet I was the person who defended MYoung, Blalock, Nolan, Teagarden, Kinsler and several other LSB whipping posts. Is that a troll or somebody who simply isn’t in lockstep with the rest of the room?

cya JJ!

you had a pretty good couple of months there.

very electrician like.

the preceding post was a great success.

Sorry, but no.

The Electrician wasn’t as bad as JJ.

Let’s not be that cruel.

What I don't understand is why the Old School Brutha

would go to Jennings in that situation if Jennings was one bad outing from getting his fat ass DFA’d.

Surely, that move didn’t play well with Thadwick & JD.

Personally would have preferred to see Mathis there

But maybe he was anticipating the need for multiple innings from him today depending on Nippert’s performance. Once it was out of hand, I’m not sure why you don’t send Jennings out there for the 8th as well if that was the thinking (instead of using Mathis for an inning).

Maybe a subtle message to the FO? Here’s what I have to use. If you don’t like it, give me another option. Although that’s probably reading too much into what actually occurred. Bullpen decisions are easy to second-guess, in retrospect.

Bullpen management this month (especially the last two weeks) has been our

biggest problem.

Going to Frank2 in a back-to-back situation killed us v the Bosox and then he left him out there when it was 5-4 and that killed any chance to mount a comeback (I view that as two mistakes in judgment in the same game).

Leaving both Millwood & Feldman in games too long v. Minnesota last week where the team lost despite having huge leads in both games.

Bringing in Really Grilli to the Tampa game with DMathis available.

Bringing in JJennings last night was inexcusable and unacceptable.

He got away with bringing in Grilli to face the MF Yankees on Tuesday but it was a terrible decision.

Baseball Prospectus said his bullpen management is his biggest weakness and we’re seeing that weakness in full display the last couple of weeks.

If this is true....

woohoo!!

Let's hope the second half will be as good as the first half has been.

Good riddance

a reliever who allows most of his inherited runners to score isn’t exactly a bigtime piece of the bullpen.

Good Nomar Garciaparra article in the WSJ of all places. I read it in hard copy, don’t know if it can be found online…

Wheres my GDT!

We are such massive underdogs (with Nippert pitching) today and the bookies agree.

To win $ 100 on the MF Yankees you need to wager $ 250.

I’d consider it a morale victory if Nip Nip Wiener’s runs allowed / innings pitched numbers are even.

If he pitches 5 innings and gives up 5 runs, I’d bank it and hope our bats and bully can save the day.
