Rangerland had been overrating Font for a while now.

Nice prospect. The kind of arm every organization wants in their system. His age gives everyone hope that he’ll develop into something special (ala Engel Beltre). Is he the #3 guy in a loaded Rangers farm system? I don’t think so.

by ncrangerfan on Aug 28, 2009 7:50 AM CDT reply actions

He throws as hard as Feliz

With a promising curveball. He needs to develop some better control, but he’s getting there and is a whole lot more than just the pitching equivalent of Beltre.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

He doesn't throw as hard as Feliz

As I recall, Dirk reported him throwing 93ish when he went to a Hickory game.

Just one game though

Even Dirk would tell you that his scouting report on him was for just one game and could be just a rough day or seeing an unfinished product.

I've seen him pitch 8 times or so

Hank is the elephant in the room. When will he disappear?

by inactive lsb user on Aug 28, 2009 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's my point

When Feliz was 19, he was a very impressive pitcher. He was sitting in the 93-96 range in short bursts and could touch 98 when he needed it. His control was suspect and his secondary offerings were below average. He showed promise, especially with his fastball, but he was a short-season thrower that lacked polish.

Font started this season as an 18 year-old in full season ball. His secondary pitches, which were almost completely non-existent two years ago, have started to show promise, and his fastball, while not thrown with 1/2 inning short burst velocity, still sits in the low-mid 90s with room for growth. I have witnessed Font throwing 98-100 mph in one inning pops and I feel confident saying that his fastball has the potential to be a true 80 as well. However, at this point in his development, Font seems to be sacrificing some fastball dominance in order to further develop his overall arsenal. He could be special.

by jparks77 on Aug 28, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

and trading him this winter

as someone above suggested, would be pretty stupid unless the return is very special.

Right

Trading Font now doesnt make much sense. Despite having the tools to develop into something special, as it stands now, Font is just a hard throwing 19 year-old in A ball that flashes promise. I dont think he has much value on his own.

Font is going to have some developmental hurdles in the next few seasons. It’s going to happen. We just need to be patient with these kids. I think Rangers fans have been spoiled the last two seasons with brilliant pitching breakouts, and as a result the bar is set too high for the rest of the arms. I do realize that people like me set that bar high by using words like “special” or “perfect” or “Michael Main is the next Jesus Christ”, so I understand the hypocrisy involved. Just sayin’..

by jparks77 on Aug 28, 2009 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey Parksie

As an aside, if I told you that I heard that Kyle Ocampo was sitting 93/94 and touching 97 out of the SPO pen would you call me crazy?

by shroomer on Aug 28, 2009 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

I would question it, but only because I havent seen him throw that hard in person. I had readings on him last season in the 88-91 range, but that was as a starter. I dont have a reading on him in Spokane. I’ll ask around.

By the way, Ovispo De Los Santos laughs at that velocity. That kid throws very, very hard.

by jparks77 on Aug 28, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

So, (and not to sound like dumb over-zealous homer guy)

One may make the argument that Font is a smidge ahead of where Feliz was at the same age. Or perhaps the org has learned a little about grooming these guys – having Font dial back his velo to augment control, while ramping up the development of his secondary pitches.

lots of reasons to be down on him, and I honestly was close to giving up on him. going into next year

Andrus, Hunter, Holland and Teagarden bump off. Too early to tell on Feliz and Borbon. I don’t see anyone on that list falling completely off the top 20 besides Hurley. So who are the 5-7 names that will jump on (keeping in mind Sickels’ MO, which means to Profar types)?

I’d guess Mendonca, Moreland, Tim Smith, Pimentel and obviously Scheppers if he signs, and then maybe Strop and Erlin or Telis, depending on how they finish, if we need two more.

Moreland, Smith

are no brainers to me, along with Scheppers if he signs, Tullis, maybe Telis, Pimentel, Zach Phillips, Bleier, Garcia, Mendonca. Then of course, there are a whole host of lower level arms, literally a dozen or so that deserve consideration in the top 30.

Moreland might make the top 10 on most lists of Ranger prospects this winter.

by t ball on Aug 28, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think he's a top 30 guy, even in consideration.

You have to at least see ball-hit ball to be in the top 30 of a solid system like ours. He’s well, well, well below-average hitting, and his fielding still isn’t spectacular, just good. He needs to show me he can at least OBP .300 and SLUG .300 before I even think about him as a prospect at all. Age or not.

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I see you point

but people who have seen him play say the tools are legit, and the system has a ton of players with lots of potential but very little in the way of performance to date. Any guy in this system you can argue for at 30 can be argued against just as easily.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Aug 28, 2009 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

There aren't a lot of guys with a line of Garcia's in our system.

Most of them haven’t been thought of twice. If you can’t hit A ball pitching, then you can’t hit. To be a top 30 product in our system, I at least ask that you be able to hit decently well in A ball. That’s not much to ask. I’d take Matt West and his crappy defense over Garcia on a prospect list right now, and I don’t think West is really in the conversation for top 30, either.

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

I think he’s more of a back end of the top 30 kind of guy, but those defensive tools are pretty drool worthy.

Really?

Salty’s thrown out an MLB CAREER-HIGH 24% of basestealers this year. That sucks, and it has nothing to do with TOS. He was bad before, and this wasn’t outside normal for him. On the other hand, Teagarden’s thrown out 39% so far in part-time action, which isn’t skewed from his minor league performance, either. Teagarden may have more passed balls, but when you get less chance to catch a certain pitcher, that’s bound to happen. Put Salty in the same position, and his rate would go way up, too. I’d also trust Teagarden to block a ball more, even though they both need a lot of work there.

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Just asking... like I said, I'm basing it solely on observation..

and TT seems to have regressed in all phases except throwing to me, while Salty has generally been regarded as improving a lot this year.

Players regress when they don't get to play.

At the least they are rusty. I don’t blame Teagarden for being forced to sit on the bench watching a below-average catcher have his job. I’m not extremely high on either Salty or Teagarden’s bats, but at least Teagarden brings one plus to the table, and that’s his defense. He just needs to get time to work with pitchers, and you’ll see him really shore up his defense if he gets to play five times a week now before Salty gets back or if Washington doesn’t completely screw things up by playing Pudge as a starter.

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Now I gotcha..

seems to be a fairly strong emotional attachment there. You sure TT needs to be playing full time over a guy hitting almost twice what he is, especially when we’re in the middle of a pennant race?

Granted, Pudge will cool off, but I don’t see TT getting 5 games a week. Nor should he.

by bking on Aug 28, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

He should.

Pudge was hitting pretty much evenly with Teagarden and Salty before he came to us. He’s hot, so it’s a big blip. Teagarden works a count, provides pretty much even defense to Pudge, if not better (GASP!), and is in our long-term plans. That adds up to me wanting Teagarden to play, Pudge to be a true backup. Pudge might get a couple hits more over the next week, but when he cools down, Teagarden’s the better player.

And there’s no emotional attachment. Just want the better player to play for once. Has Salty done anything to make me think he’s a better player? Nope.

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

That's just so full of dumb, I thought you were an Expert?

Pudge might get a couple hits more over the next week, [in a Pennant Race] but when he cools down, [he won’t play as much!]

He just needs to get time to work with pitchers [Fuck That, the better performing player needs to play right now – screw TT’s development]

Pudge, TT, Salty

none of them should be counted on to hit like Piazza right now. I’d start Tea 4 times a week and Pudge 2 or 3, one of them might get on a hot streak, but I wouldn’t project either of them to be great bats.

Pudge is on a hot streak

.357 since being aquired. That was my point, ride him until he cools off, subbing in TT when he needs a rest. When he cools, change the PT arrangement.

Salty has TOS right?

TT starts 5/week and Pudge 2/week at C. On the other days, Pudge DH’s until said hot bat goes cold. Once Salty comes back, strictly back-up unless Pudge really starts to blow.

TT cant hit for shit

he just cant, this isnt an opinion, its a fact

Salty has 10x more potential and i dont want to see TT and his guaranteed .220/.300/.400 as the everyday catcher…no fuckin thx

also, consider TTs injury history as well

as for the CS%…irrelevant to me, Salty has been fucked over by Millwood and Feldman so much in that regard it isnt even funny

Yeah, Salty’s been such a durable horse………

by Andy Seiler on Aug 28, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Jackass...do i need to treat you like Josey?

TTs injuries have required extensive surgery and are considered far more damning to his future durability

by Horns130 on Aug 28, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Says who?

Just because Teagarden had Tommy John doesn’t mean he’s less durable now. Salty’s had more numerous problems than Teagarden, and his current TOS problem could lead to surgery, too. It’s not as if it goes away. I wouldn’t put money on Salty having a more durable career than Teagarden behind the plate. Elbow problems from last year for Salty and TOS aren’t minor problems.

The reason I say that is b/c depeche’s main schtick is hating on Teagarden. As in, a Tbag = douchebag.

BA's Prospect Hot Sheet:
No. 7 MARTIN PEREZ, LHP
 RANGERS

Team: Double-A Frisco (Texas)
Age: 18
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO
The Scoop: Perez was still on an 80-pitch count and still went five innings, except this time he did it in Double-A. He consistently put up a similar line for low Class A Hickory before being called up to Frisco in early August. It took Perez a couple of starts to get used to the level, as he allowed nine runs in 6 2/3 innings in his first two outings. But by pitching five scoreless innings this week against San Antonio, he proved he’s sufficiently adjusted. For such a young pitcher, Perez understands the importance of getting ahead and staying ahead with his fastball, which sits 92-94 mph and touches 95. He also mixes in a sharp curveball and an improving changeup that hitters either foul off or miss completely.

C+ because of scouting reports and chance to breakout id think.

I'd think

he’s in the mix as a top 30 guy, especially if he continues to finish strong. He’s not super young, an ‘88 b-day (same as Mendonca as a frame of reference) but he’s hit well enough at Spokane to pique my interest. Anyone know about his defensive acumen?

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Good defensive player

Tons of tools. Better suited for a corner. An A’s scout I know called him “Baby Mondesi.” Not a bad comp.

awesome, barely remember that guy, but id remember him being good… haha, thats just a real odd comparison.

Similar tools doesnt equal similar development. Santana’s raw talent is actually quite remarkable. He just doesnt seem to care about much, and that has definitely played a part in his development as a baseball player.

well i mightv'e forgot

to label the much-too-long paragraph as “OT”, and it probably looks misplaced and harsh under that specific comment. I’ve just watched him for months talk down to people because he thinks he owns a degree in scouting and is the only one that understands the fine art of pitching mechanics…

I mightv’e been too harsh, but it’s because he gets away with insulting people’s intelligence because he labeled himself an expert and has a website… Then acts like his opinion has more merit than anybody on this board when it’s quite the contrary….

It rubbed me the wrong way more than the usual trolls, because he is actually very serious in every sense of the word….Also, because some people let him get away with talking down to them because they think he actually is an expert.
