What is the difference between Ian hitting leadoff vs middle of order?
Since he came off DL, anyone?

Yeah, it's probably not significant enough, but I wonder if he is taking to the 5 hole.

Quick math
so don’t hold me to this, but in 4 games hitting leadoff since coming off the DL I’ve got him at .143/.250/.250.

SO…..am I in the minority in thinking that vs. Lefties we should put Andrus in the lead off spot and keep Kinsler in the middle of the order?
I know this is a SSS but we’re in the middle of a run here.

Correllation does not equal cause-and-effect
It is not the position in the batting order that improves his performance. It is WHY he is moved, which is the LHP v. RHP splits.

Well
he is hitting leadoff vs. lefties and 5th vs. righties so shouldnt he be hitting better in the leadoff spot then?

No
My car got booted yesterday at a parking lot I have been parking at for 10 years. I park there every time I go to the courthouse. I pay when I return. The lot charges a sliding scale based on how long you are there.
Yesterday, I park. I go to the courthouse. I come back an hour later and go to the booth to pay. I look over, and my car is booted.
I say, wtf. The guy is very apologetic, and he tells me that a new company took over that week, and their policy is that if you don’t pay in advance, you get booted. He said he didn’t see they had booted me.
I go talk to the boot guy. He basically says, too bad, it is in the system, nothing I can do, you have to pay $100 to get your car back. The cashier says, he’s a regular, he always pays when he comes back, cut him some slack, and the guy says, too bad, it is in the system, he has to pay.
I call, they say two cars are ahead of you, but then the cashier will be there. It takes me an hour to get my car. I talk to a couple of cops in the meantime. They tell me it is a new city ordinance that has just passed that allows a lot more booting, and it sucks because they are having to break up fistfights and stuff because the boots are going on cars all the time in situations like mine.
So I wait an hour and have to pay $100 and have been calling the company to try to get my money back. In the meantime, while I was waiting, I told everyone who drove up to park there not to park there because they boot people, and instead to go park across the street.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 28, 2009 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions
That sucks
I wouldn’t return there again. Booting for not paying in advance when the yard has an attendant is wrong.
Whoa, this is strange
As I’m reading this very post, I get a call from a friend in Dallas at Baylor Medical who just had his pickup booted under similar circumstances. He tried to prepay, the machine was out of order, so he went in the doctor’s office next door and asked them what to do. They suggested to just go on to the appointment. He came out to find his pickup booted and was about ready to whip the parking attendant with an attitude who told him pay the $100 or else.
I told him he probably didn’t have much choice but to pay the $100 if he wanted his pickup unbooted this afternoon. But now he wants me, as a recent bar exam taker waiting on bar results and working for a law firm, to find someone at the parking company to hassle until they agree to give him his money back. This should entertain me.

The city just passed an ordinance requiring lots to have a person or machine on hand to give receipts out. People here were getting booted after paying.

There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality which excites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Yeah, it drives me nuts when I hear about his solid first half...
Some folks tout his ERA for the first half, but that nagging little IR% just wouldn’t go away. Once he started letting in his own runners too, that was just no way he could stay.

Why does everyone take glee in rubbing AJMs face with Jennings?
It isn’t like there was a universal call to release him, yet the Rangers held on like Adam suggested they should and he proceeded to ruin the season. AJM just said that he thought he was effective enough to remain on the roster.
It isn’t like he’s Mendoza or Botts or Laird, guys who Adam took an irrational liking to and so is fun to tease about. He’s just a middle reliever who no one really cares about.
Go Rice Owls!

Yep, he and I got debated it a bit..
He seemed sure that Jennings’ season-long propensity for letting inherited runners score was just a fluke, since the stats didn’t show any reason for it.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
ERA can be a very deceptive stat
especially with relief pitchers.
Chances are that if you’re a starter who logs 180 IP and have a 3.50 ERA, you’re probably a pretty good pitcher (with lots of Game Scores of 50+) but Jennings was a classic example of where ERA didn’t tell near the story.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
I almost don't trust ERA at all for relievers
Between inherited runners and the ability of a blowout to completely screw up an ERA, it’s extremely unreliable.

He wasn't using ERA
He was using FIP, strand rate, etc.
He’s more sophisticated a stats guy than that…

IF he was using FIP to justify

When batters have an obp of .475 on you, there’s no maybe about it, you definitively suck.

From Sullivan's blog
A couple of good items:
Great quote complimenting the work of outfield coach Gary Pettis by Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon after the Rangers 7-2 victory on Thursday: “You always want to score as many runs as you can, but the positioning of the Texas outfielders, it seemed they moved on every pitch. They adjust on every hitter. David Murphy was playing Cano in the right spot and he’s constantly moving out there. Those guys are doing their homework and that’s a big reason why they’re winning so many games.”
and, not unrelated:
Rangers starting pitchers have 54 wins this year. That’s the most by any rotation in the American League.
I enjoyed reading both of those.

I found this quote a little strange.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia on his expectations for playing time when he returns next week: “I still expect to play four days a week, maybe five, but how can you complain when you have a Hall of Famer in front of you or playing with you. Wash will do a good job splitting it up but it comes down to who’s playing the best. If I’m doing the job, I should be there. If Pudge is still hitting seven thousand and throwing everybody out, he should be out there. Wash will handle it in the right way.”
I know he is competitive and wants to get back out there, but I just found this quote a little odd.

Salty

So are you blaming Salty for the Air France Flight 447 crash? Nothing better than an arbitrary date.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Salty was decent in April & May.
I chose June 1 because Salty had hits in his late 8 games of May but if it’d make you feel better we could switch it to June 2 because he didn’t play on June 1.
Do you think a .217 batting average / .268 obp is good and that Salty has any business making it public that he thinks he should be playing 4-5 days a week?
Hank F took his medicine and STFU and I advise paisan to do the same thing even if he’s one of “JD’s boys” (confirmed by Newberg on the last podcast).

No, those aren’t great stats but I have no problem with starters saying their starters. It’s either that or the Nuke Laruche responses.
Yes, Salty is one of JD’s “boys.” JD traded for him. Pudge is also one of JD’s boys for the same reason.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
It's funny you would refer to Salty's performance since June 1st a Black Hole
and yet Hank F sporting a .224 avg and .262 OBP, since June 1st, was carrying This Thing.

Blalock led the team in HR & RBI
from July 1 to mid August at a time when runs were very scarce.
I don’t disagree with Hank F going to the bench because he earned it with his obp and I don’t know what the hell was going on with all the errant pick off throws last week. He was very much gassed and needed a rest.
I’m still leery that Chris Daniels is going to make the team better than it was with Hank F but the early results are promising.
I do live in fear of having to watch Daniels throw down another 3 for 44 (with 24Ks), 7 for 60 (with 27Ks) or a .143/.491 v LH pitching the rest of the year with this team having a great chance to make the playoffs.
We’ll find out soon enough. The Twins are throwing a spare lefty at us tonight and the BJs have three of them going v us next week.

and still do on occasion, but I think he’s just playing to the room. Case in point – the one when he was on his way back from rehab and Dan fluffed him about hitting home runs, like the fans were idiots. I think he just plays to that.

I heard that
one too. kinsler just seems a bit douchey to me.

I'm not going to expend much energy disagreeing..
Because a lot of evidence is there…

Why does anybody care if he really is a douche?
I don’t necessarily agree with that premise but how many people in LSB are going to be hanging out with him on any kind of regular basis?

Call us crazy..
We actually like to LIKE the guys we root for..

"Like" is almost entirely tied to performance.
One of the supposedly nicest guys to ever play for the Rangers was Jeff Huson but I like Ian Kinsler a lot more because he’s a borderline star with a chance for superstardom.

Then why would you " like "
Hank Blalock? I looked up the phrase sustained futility in the encyclopedia the other day and there was a picture of Hank there
I wanted CD out of the line-up because he was killing The Thing.
As soon as Blalock began playing every day the June Swoon immediately ended a 28-19 record evolved.
People in here think I was crazy for Blalock but I’m much more concerned about the team instead of individuals. If somebody is killing the team with performance and costing us games, I don’t want them in the line-up.
CD went 1 for 22, 3 for 44, 7 for 60 – hitting .143 with a .491 OPS v LH’s and on his way to striking out 260+ times this year.
The kid was allowed to suck the biggest dick for longer than anybody I can ever remember watching and should have been sent down in early June when he was hitting .189.
Blalock’s performance blew hot for 3 weeks but extremely cold otherwise and I can’t argue that he shouldn’t have been benched. At then end he wasn’t catching any breaks and was clearly gassed.
I hope CD is back to what he was last year and he’s had a decent start (4 for 12 including a weak-ass squib) but I’m not convinced he’s back to where he was just yet.
I’ve said many, many times that I used to love CD’s future but now I just like it. Reason being, I’ve never seen anybody as bad as he was for as long as he was ever recover and have a good major league career.

Mark McGwire, 5/18/91-7/28/91:
.152/.290/.330 in 232 PAs
Pat Burrell, 5/22/03-8/2/03:
.179/.291/.311 in 227 PAs (with 57 Ks).
Rafael Palmeiro, 5/29/89-9/5/89:
.220/.299/.293 in 352 PAs
Hank F. Blalock, 5/24/06-end of ’06
.238/.295/.347 in 457 PAs (although this doesn’t help rebut your point).

I don’t see a .256 OBP in there or anybody who struck out 41% of the time.
If you strike out 41% of the time in 650 plate appearances you will have 266 K’s. That’s the pace CDavis was on until the plug was pulled.
I also think McGwire had a really bad case of platar f and it hurt him for a couple years.
The players I looked at were Bo Jackson in ‘93 when he’d had it and Inky in ’91, Inky was decent in ’93 but quickly done.
Rob Deer, Gorman Thomas, Dave Kingman were also candidates and although none were as bad as Davis, when they came close to his numbers they were quickly out of baseball.

"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Well, shit
I guess we should go ahead and cut Davis now, then.

That's why I no longer love his future
and now I only like it.
These are uncharted waters because I don’t know of anybody in the last 40 years who was that bad for that long in The Show and ever fully recovered.

It’d behoove the winner of that charade to represent the community well.

the wave is epically dumb
But I suspect that it is something that you really only notice as a player in your home park. Yeah, Rangers fans do it a lot, but so do fans in other stadiums (Padres fans would probably do it more, but when they see it they run out to grab their surf boards.)
Go Rice Owls!
They were doing it in Fenway during that last series there
in the 7th or 8th inning. It’s epically stupid, but it drives me crazy that people think it’s more of an issue here than other parks. It happens in every single stadium I’ve been in.

Yeah.
I was in Fenway for Bucholz’ no hitter two years ago and they were doing the wave in the 6th or 7th inning of that game, too. Also, some guys started talking about the no-hitter in the 4th inning. Maybe the ‘real’ fans have better seats than we did…
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

I personally can't stand the wave
SI did a poll a few months back, most players didn’t like the wave and thought it was distracting.
The Wave is some stupid shit, and i hope the brain dead so called fans
who continue this thing will some day get the message about how foolish it makes them look, for the most part it is done not by real baseball fans, but by tourists or those just on a family outing of some sort. i just wish the ballpark was not the capitol of the “Wave”
Larry Parrish Was Da Man!
last time i was at a rangers game last week....
a group of fans in the section next to us started trying to get a wave started and i booed them and told them to shut up…

Here is my entry – Texas Rangers – Built for Fun That was a pretty damn funny moment last year.

Outstanding call
That had me giggling and grinning like a 5yo at Christmas.

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
Spare LH pitching and watching Wash manage the bully
has been our kryptonite this season plus the Rangers have a terrible record in domes recently.

10-8 in domes this year...
right in line with their overall record.

How about domes with turf
since Safeco, Minute Maid and Chase Field all open & close their roofs and have grass fields?
I consider Toronto, Minnesota and Tampa to be different animals because it’s turf with a dome.

"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Losing to both Toronto and Tampa
Toronto being earlier in the year when they were playing far better than us, and a really good Rays team at home is nothing to scoff about. Let’s see how they do this series.
2-4 in domes with turf so noted
but with any luck, Hank F and his .120 dome average, 3-25 with 7 K’s and 0 RBI’s, this year will be on the bench.

Boston
is supposed to be affected by that hurricane this weekend.
This may cause a DH to be played on Sunday which could wreak some havoc on Toronto’s staff when they have to turnaround a play a DH in Texas on Tuesday plus they will be making a 4 hour flight to DFW for a Monday game.
The way I figure it is that we will be starting Nipples & Ichabod in the DH on Tuesday and will need all the help we can get.
