Taking balls/strike calls away from umps looks kinda good about now?
It would be easy, put a receiver in his ear that buzzes or something if the pitch gets the strike zone and not if it doesn’t. We wouldn’t even know it was being done. Ump in charge of everthing else.
"We have a better chance to win with other guys in the lineup," said Blalock, who is hitting .190 the past 30 games. "That’s something I’ve got to deal with."

Tough loss but it wasn't our night from early on.
Oh well. Just one game.
Win the next two and it’s been an excellent road trip.
at that point....
why does nobody throw a fit….
Why does this team continue to take it up the ass without saying anything?

And that would do what?
It’s a loss. Sucks, but the Rangers didn’t exactly play well enough to deserve it.
Get to the hotel, get a good rest after the travel yesterday, and win the next two with Feldman/Millwood to finish off a great road trip.

It's an 88 mph Joe Nathan slider a foot+ off the plate.
There’s like a 0% chance he makes contact if he swings.

you'd have been the first
person calling for CD’s head for swinging at that pitch.
I agree.
I’m not blaming him for not swinging at it as I got on him for swinging at a ball even closer earlier in the AB.
He got screwed. Josey should focus on the larger data set of the full season Davis numbers. It tells the story. Dude has been a disaster for this team this year.
CD in the beginning != CD now
adjustment: harmony achieved by modification or change of a position
Are you serious?
Decision-time
1) Swing at an obvious ball that you won’t be able to do anything with and strike out to end the game
or
2) Take the obvious ball that will be called a ball 99% of the time, thus loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th
i think him laying off balls out of the zone
shows growth. umps get more calls right than wrong. next time it’s ball 4.
wow.
you would crucify him for swinging at that pitch if he had and missed, as he and many many many other pitchers would do trying to make contact on that.
you and texas_dawg showing the true stripes once again. you HAVE to take that pitch. this wasn’t a 0-2 count where you would probably not have much a chance to walk.. that was the walk.. advancing the go ahead run to 2nd base.
the preceding post was a great success.
Don't lump me in with him.
I’ve said Davis was screwed and that that wasn’t his fault. (It wasn’t a “great AB” either though as he swung at a couple balls before the bad call.)
Ultimately just one AB (as I said above). The larger CD data set of 2009 tells the story.
Well...
Ultimately, he did… as the scorecard says.
That wasn’t the only pitch of the AB.
Anyhoo, I’m not ripping the guy for it. He made some bad swings but hung in there better than he would have earlier in the season and then got the kind of crappy call that .205 hitting K record setters are more prone to get on the road.
It’s just one AB. Plenty of other Rangers played a role in this loss as well.
as the scoreboard says is meaningless
so if the umpire calls it a ball he succeeded? he didn’t do anything different.
its the same as if you complained after him hitting a hard line drive right at someone. he did his job, the circumstances resulted in a negative.. in this case one that shouldn’t be such a factor.
and the rest of the at bat was fine. swinging at ONE actually bad pitch vs JOE NATHAN and fighting back for a should be walk is definitively a good at bat and you should admit it.
the preceding post was a great success.
He swung at one true ball before that
but great ABs dont have to be ones where they lay off everything, he fouled off an extremely tough pitch at 1-2 and worked what should have been a walk in a very tough situation. You can be an ass-hole if you’d like, but to characterize that not as a great at bat is making a great AB an extremely rare occurence, especially when you consider the circumstances.

Let's compare him to Blalock, who took the walk.
Blalock also swung at a terrible pitch in the at bat before, but his was still a “great AB.” So the umpire can define “great ABs,” I guess.

No, you swing at anything close
and that wasn;t even close! It started out and stayed out and never got anywhere near the plate.
blalock never got any sympathy for getting screwed on an ump’s call because he swung at everything. With Hank, that pitch is a swinging K or a weak grounder to second.

That's the best you can do?
Blalock takes a called third strike with one out, nobody on in the top of the fifth inning in Tampa down 2-0….that’s why nobody bitched. That and the fact that the pitch wasn’t nearly as far off the plate as the pitch to Davis last night.

what difference does it make which arm he does it with?

How many more arms like that do we have?

Yah
He was walking dudes like a drunken CJ there for a while, just put it all together in Frisco, threw 3 innings at OKC, and rode the shuttle.
I’m actually a little surprised they called him up over Madrigal, but then again Warner’s left his good stuff in OKC every time he’s come up this year.
Look at the comments under Jeff Wilson's blog post on dallasnews.com. What a bunch of rocket scientists.- Keith Law
Strop
I also think he’s a better pitcher than Madrigal. Might have something to do with it too.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Not something I really want to argue
but Warner’s been pretty damned good in AAA all year, and Strop just put himself together about three weeks ago. Really similar lines between the two- the big differences showing in walk rates (where Madrigal trumps Strop), and GB/HR rates (where Strop trumps Madrigal on both accounts).
Interestingly enough, they have the exact same FIP over the year.
But, yah, I can agree that Strop probably has the higher ceiling of the two, and Strop’s ability to do whatever it is he does to lefties means he’s a better fit for the bullpen as currently constructed.
Look at the comments under Jeff Wilson's blog post on dallasnews.com. What a bunch of rocket scientists.- Keith Law
Playoff rosters
For Strop to be playoff eligible he would have had to be on the 40 man roster by August 31st. Madrigal will be playoff eligible no matter where he is on August 31st. So by adding Strop now and bringing him up (and presumably keeping him up the rest of the year) he won’t burn an option which is huge for a guy like him. He only started pitching a couple years ago so wasting a full option this year would be huge.

• The Rangers lost ground in the AL wild card as Boston overcame an early 3-0 deficit to beat Toronto 6-5. It improved the Red Sox lead to 2.5 games.
• C Taylor Teagarden struck out in all three of his at-bats. Teagarden is hitting .160 (12-for-75) since the All-Star break. He has 31 strikeouts in 75 at-bats.
• The AL West race took an unfortunate turn for the Rangers when the Los Angeles Angels acquired LHP Scott Kazmir from Tampa Bay. Kazmir is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA against the Rangers in his career and could start against them twice in September.
"We have a better chance to win with other guys in the lineup," said Blalock, who is hitting .190 the past 30 games. "That’s something I’ve got to deal with."
Could we not block the Kazmir addition?

he cleared waivers
likely because everyone knows he is done. The only reason he owns the Rangers is because he’s a lefty with solid stuff.

But why did we let him clear waivers?
Not that we wanted him but it would have been nice to block them. Not sure how that works.

b/c we had no idea the angels were going to claim him
also, it is possible that the rays would have just given him to us if we claimed him and we couldnt have allowed that
Waiver claim
Yeah…if the rangers claimed him there would be a chance the rays would just let him go and the rangers cant take on his salary

It sounds like Teagarden's audition for the regular catchers job is getting close to being over.

Remember the good old days during the winter when many of the folks around here where touting Tea as "untouchable" during all those Boston/catcher rumors?
Too bad those folks had to be both right about Salty and wrong about Teagarden.

CD went 14 for 70 with 34 Ks and a .701 OPS in April (5 HR & 9 RBI) while playing every day.
while TT is 11 for 55 with 22Ks and a .711 OPS in August (4 HR & 7 RBI) while playing most of the time.

If thats what your saying I agree.

Of course, I guess it is a little late for that, this year.

If you answer that it is to rile up posters, then I can appreciate that
although I’d suggest you get a life
And following that not so sterling April
CD went 18 for 95 (.189 with a .238 obp) with 43Ks so I don’t believe what Teagarden has done in August should bury him going forward, especially when the replacement would be somebody as terrible as Salty (.217 average / .265 obp since June 2).
