M Velazquez 2-2, 2 BBs 1 HR

he’s looking more and more like the future of our OF prospects

by blalock84 on Aug 28, 2009 11:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Velazquez' OPS is now up to 900 in Spokane

Not bad for a toolsy outfielder who is, for all intents and purposes, playing his first season of minor league baseball. His Spokane numbers suggest that he is learning quickly:
July – 6 BB, 23 SO, 293/340/533
August – 11 BB, 17 SO, 307/381/554

Perhaps the Rangers will pair Velazquez with Beltre next season to see if the two can develop a friendly rivalry.

I questioned a month ago if Velazquez wasn't a better prospect than Beltre

I think he is.

I don’t know anything about him. Did he get a late start at baseball?

yea, was a highly touted draft dude, but then got arrested because his brother shot someone while he was with hims

spent a baseball season in jail and then i think played last year in the DSL? anyways, he was always a highly regarded prospect (second round talent maybe) but after he got caught up in all that stuff his stuck plummented. One of our scouts convinced us to take a flyer on him sometime in the late teens rounds and wait on him til after he finished his time. Looks like that scout was right.

Alot of good reviews. I heard JParks say something about A’s scout comparing him to Raul Mondesi, haha. anyways, lots of good reviews about all his tools. Borderline CF type, but more likely to just be a plus defensive corner guy. He’s got the pop to be a COF. Hopefully continues to develop. I bet he goes to High A next year and gets his chance at AA fairly quickly if he does well there

he played in SS or AZL 2 seasons ago and destroyed as a 19 yr old, missed all of last season

and came back about 1/3 through this season and has blown the doors off just like he never missed a beat. he’d be in high A maybe even AA if he hadnt missed that year. he’s always been a badass.

I can't help it. I’m an asshole.

Pouring a 40 out for Thomas Diamond's spot on the 40 man roster

Can’t see that not coming to an end today or tomorrow.

Of course, any sadness I have from being massively wrong on that is washed out by the fact that Jack Arias is most likely joining him as well.

I hope.

Beavan was very good, 2nd start in a row

Last night:

7.0 5 0 1 4

Previous start:

7.0 5 0 1 2

Overall, his WHIP is 1.38 in AA, too high when combined with a 3.3 K/9. I am still very hopeful, as he is so young. Just hoping to spur some convo, I suppose.

I cannot get excited about Beavan

People tell me he’s young for his league. They also say he’s got good command and knows how to pitch but his velocity and non-existent k rate turn me right off.

He doesn’t have an out pitch. He’s far too hittable and he throws in the upper 80s low 90s which for a righty isn’t impressive.

He’s got time but I don’t think this is what the Rangers had in mind when they drafted him. Porcell, Borbon, and Hunter would have been a much better draft.

If you cant get excited

at least you cant say this has been a bad pick, i mean not many guys get to AA at 20. The guy is just fine, consider his FIP is still in the 3s, he’s going to be a ML pitcher, no he’s not gonna be a #1, 2 or likely 3, but he’s damn well gonna be wortht the 1.8 Mil we paid him and likely gonna be better off than alot of other 1st round picks… Heck, thinking about it, we really havent hit directly on a 1st round SP, Beavan might end up being our best.

Um...

I think there’s a lot of room for an argument as to whether he’ll be a MLB pitcher. He hasn’t shown anything to make you think yeah, he’s got it. Nor has he shown worthy of that 1.8 million bonus. Hey that’s how these things work out. For every Holland you hit on late there’s a Mayberry, Sinsei who you whiff on. He’s still got time but right now he’s a poor man’s Hunter looking a heck of a lot like Tommy did at the time we drafted him except Beavan doesn’t even have a plus pitch like Hunter’s curve was. He’s young and still growing into his frame, maybe with some weight gains he’ll add velocity or he’ll learn a new pitch but his ceiling right now is maybe number five starter with below average stuff. With the depth of this system I don’t think he’s good enough to be a number five starter here. Something about him will have to change if he’s going to make the Rangers in 2011 or beyond.

The year Beavan was drafted, I remember a story about the org putting him and Big Game Hunter as roomies

Said they thought Hunter would be a good, calming, mature influence on the younger BB. I’m somewhat hopeful that Hunter might continue to serve as a mentor to Beavan and teach him a few things about the importance of the changeup. The progress that Hunter made in refining his repertoire from last year to this year has been phenomenal, and as coachable as Beavan has been, maybe a few tips from BGH might help him refine from secondary offerings. I’m thinking that Beavan is going to have to add a pitch to really be successful, but there is plenty of time for that, and some evidence that (1) he is willing to learn and (2) the organization has been successful in adding pitchability to talented young pitchers.

Hunter has made some hella improvements, true.

And for all the crap about Beavan being a cocky jackass, I have been super-impressed with the maturity and coachability he has shown, repeatedly. ’Spect, BB.

Perhaps one of our MILB/pitching gurus will stumble through here, and make a suggestion as to what pitch he could/should add.

split

I think it is frowned upon for young pitchers, but it could be the out pitch that he needs. Especially effective for guys that can spot the FB and get ahead in counts – like BB.

Improvement on the slider would help tremendously as well.

I don’t get it. He pitched 8 innings 3 days ago. It was only 86 pitches, but still. I guess it could be that Team Mexico wants to adjust his rhythm for the World Cup sked and sent word to the Rangers. Something’s fishy about all this. Believe it when I see it.

Shouldn’t be protected but may be being held back to minimize the chance some other team grabs him. A good start in Frisco next year could put him on the radar for a possible late season or 2011 opportunity in the bullpen

Liverpool have no depth (and no Alonso) and United’s attacking options are absolutely dire. Despite the loss today, Arsenal may be the best challengers.

I'm thinking Feldman with better off-speed stuff is a good comp

Doyle is supposed to be a sinkerball guy but he seems to be throwing his 4s over his sinker during his stint in the bullpen in LowA with his 4s profiling as a plus pitch. He sat 94-95 tonight and one of his SOS was on a CU. The outings in spokane that I caught he sat at 90 so I am presuming that was his sinker (89-91 per pre-draft reports). His slider and change played well there too.

The most encouraging thing about Doyle has been his continuing improvements on what was a nice college season for him. The pre-draft reports suggested his off-speed stuff profiled as average but not swing and miss stuff. Everything that I have heard on the PxP suggest both his slider and change can and do miss bats. The same reports also suggested that his velo was getting better throughout the spring, and we have seen that trend continue as well. Finally, his command has been even better than his Jr year proper.

I’m pretty high on him and think that he has a realistic ceiling as a mid-rotation starter and could move quickly. The biggest difference between him and Hunter, Reed and TMurph, is that Doyle was a 3 year starter and the other 3 were not with Reed and Murphy looking like starter busts so far. All 3 had issues with their stuff, mechanics, and level of experience as starters that Doyle did not have coming out, though Hunter, to be fair, was only a sophomore.

thank you

for the report. Sinkerballers can play in Arlington as Feldman is proving. Espeically if he has some other pitch that can be an out pitch. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does in the Cal League sometime next year. The Rangers will probably go slower with him than Hunter because there doesn’t appear to be as big a need for starters in Arlington but he’s on the radar for 2011.

I think its really Scotts Cutter that makes the difference

and to me, the cutter seems to be a better groundball/INF fly pitch, especially to lefties. It seems like so many hitters in the game today, especially lefties, use a drop-the-back shoulder swing to combat sinker/2seamers thats thrown more now. Anyways, i really like that we seem to be teaching the cutter to alot of our younger pitchers.

Doyle

was 88-92 last night from the scout and team radar guns. The 94-95 was from the stadium radar gun, which is incredibly fast in West Virginia. And he’s throwing all two-seamers—no four.

Neil Ramirez hit 98 on the gun there last night. He is about 88-91, topping out at 92 or 93 once per start.

While they’re fast in WV, they’re slow in Hickory. Joe Wieland has been about 86-91 on the home guns there, and he’s generally 90-94-ish.

by JasonCole on Aug 30, 2009 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Thanks for the gun update(s)

Are you in Hickory right now? That velo did sound mighty generous – surprised that the pxp guy did not call it suspect ; they ususally mention it as an aside. His velo then is right on par with his pre-draft reports, sitting 90 with his sinker. His 4s flashed 93-94 and topped out at 95 this spring according to pre-draft reports. What does seem a bit different is that his off-speed stuff appears better than advertised. I will say that the Spokane gun seems right on, as I mentioned, as he was sitting 90 in the 2 appearances that I listened to.

So what do you think of the AAA, AA, and HighA guns when you were there (or historically)?

by Goyogringo on Aug 30, 2009 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know a scout that was there

And I got a good feel for the gun when I was in Hickory earlier in the season. I remember being in Clinton last year, and I asked if the stadium gun was accurate. They said it absolutely was. Then it would have Feliz throwing 88 and topping out at 92. I don’t know why most radio guys don’t bother to check if the readings are correct or not.

Most minor league stadium guns are bad because they’re located all the way up in the press box.

The OKC radar gun is a tick or two fast, but generally pretty good. Frisco’s depends on whether or not someone has knocked it off track that night. It can be good, and it can also be way off.

The only stadium radar guns I’ve ever trusted are Round Rock and Corpus Christi. They do it the right way. They have an intern or the charting pitchers radio the velo up to the press box, and they put it on the scoreboard. That way you know it’s accurate.

Mendonca

in 14 High A ABs, he’s struck out just once. That is a great sign. I hope the reason they promoted him was because they felt like he got his swing under control. He very obviously can hit the ball hard when he makes contact

They've snuck in several promotions in the last few weeks

"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
"When you have a weapon on your shoulder like he has, you can be cool." RW on Perez
And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.

Ming from Newberg with an article on Mendonca

4 for 6 with a 2B no SO

http://www.turlockjournal.com/news/article/1021/

The third baseman was in Washington competing for the short-season Spokane Indians of the Texas Rangers organization. Mendonca was informed late Wednesday that he had been bumped up to Bakersfield in only his first season in the minor leagues after being drafted in the second round from Fresno State, where he was the star of the 2008 College World Series championship team.
"Everybody hopes to (get promoted), whether they do or not," he said. "But I’m happy I did. I’m happy I got promoted."
And then he learned of something cool. He was going to make his first appearance in a new uniform at a stadium not too far from where he played baseball at Turlock High. He phoned his father, Ray, to say he was coming home. Ray picked up his son at the Modesto airport at 6 a.m. Thursday and the first thing Mendonca did when he got home was to take a nap on the couch.
On Thursday night, he showcased why he got his promotion. He went 1-for-4 with a standup double that resulted in a run, while he received a nice ovation before every at-bat.

I think they promoted up to the Cal LG partly b/c he’s from that area and it would be a really nice gesture to him and his family, he also seems to be able to really help that team in the midst of the race… I think i might have an illogical liking for this guy, i really hope he makes it and is able to replace MY down the road.

there is nothing illogical about it

plenty of people like him as a prospect, including TX scouts I might add. Overstating first year performances (before one’s first off-season) be they good or bad is the problem with prospecters in this forum.

the guy has got a ton of things he needs to improve on

but i just really like what he brings to the table.

JD made a comment on one of the TV broadcasts

That Ranger scouts thought he had a similar profile to Chris Davis.

I wondered that. He certainly fits the big power but big K mold of Davis.

If he has a similar mentality and aptitude, then, woohoo!

Mendonca

Has surprised me as well. We all knew his shortcomings after he was drafted, which persisted a bit iN Hickory. His attributes, however, have persisted as well, which is great to see.

It’ be nice to have another OBP Machine at 3B in the org, but if Whittleman is all we’ve got, then give me Mendonca and his high K rates. Power is hard to teach (but easy to inject), but zone recognition should get better with time. Keep it up, Donc!

What's the rumpus?
