Thanks Jamison, as always, it was a great event.
I could not believe JD spoke for 90 minutes, it seemed like 30…fascinating to hear his honest thoughts. 100% stand up guy.
I am only bummed because I did not get to say goodbye to EC. Pass it on please.

I'll go...
I think Will and Kevin started a little before the hour…they were taking questions right when I walked in.
Ruben Sierra Jr was an early one. Kevin had a hilarious line suggesting he looks so much like his father, he may have just been formed in a Petrie dish from a cheek scraping (“maybe he has no mother?”). The ceiling on the guy is 5-tool superstar, the floor is “you want fries with that?”
Will talked about Tanner Scheppers, and I never quite settled into thinking “ok, this was a good call.” It’s high-risk – he described Tanner’s shoulder action by punching a fist into an open hand (ie, the “arm bone” into the “rotator cuff” if I have that right), and said that’s the internal action when the player throws a pitch. Bone chips in his shoulder have been an issue. But he might be alright. Might be. He also mentioned Carlos Marmol here, saying to watch him pitch – something is dreadfully wrong with the player’s shoulder…the guy’s arm is about to blow.
There was a question about the overall outcome of the Halladay trade (Beane “turned a small profit”), the catchers (Goldstein is still bullish on Saltalamacchia, and called Teagarden a “frontline backup, second-tier team starter”), Smoak (Goldstein said he has the ceiling of a “switch-hitting Justin Morneau”). Am I misremembering that they said Wilmer had a good year? They came around to saying Anaheim is the better team this year, and much would have to break juuuust right for Texas to catch them, but the Rangers are in ascendancy (and probably will need to worry more about Oakland soon).
Actually they took quite a few questions about non-Rangers players too. They were funny and relaxed, I kept thinking they must have much experience as public speakers.
JD came out and said it’s still surreal that people care about what he has to say (heh…I’d have to say I was all ears for what he had to say). Adam asked him about the offense, especially in terms of what Ron Washington’s influence was supposed to be when he was hired, and the overall answer was that it’s been addressed, and a guy like Rudy talks constantly to batters about improving their approach. Tsi dovetailed with someone’s question about Hamilton later – JD described him as “human” and said the success-more confidence, success-more confidence trajectory he was on last year has not been the pattern this year, even though Josh isn’t really lacking confidence either. He specifically shot down the notion Josh had a bad second half in 2008 (he had a “rough August” and was great otherwise).
He said Davis is a late September call-up, if not earlier. He said they drafted Purke to sign him, and mentioned that they have more time on Scheppers because he isn’t bound to the August deadline of other Rule 4’s. He suggested an earlier signing deadline would be a challenge with negotiations but would help so much with preserving development time for first-year pros (hear, hear).
JD is very bullish on Jurickson Profar. I asked if they had any more money budgeted for the J2 Latin American guys, and he said they’re working some guys out but nobody on the scale of Profar or Sardinas.
Grant Schiller asked for 3 players “not on the radar” that JD had on his own radar – JD again named Profar, Leury Garcia, and (if I heard right) Tim Murphy? Schiller also asked a question about when it’s strategically easier to slide a player off the 40 (right out of training camp most teams’ rosters are set) and a question about players who might help down the stretch, including one not on the 40 (Neftali was the non-roster guy (at that moment), and I think he mentioned Davis, Moscoso, and Madrigal?). Adam asked about Beavan’s strikeout rate, and JD recognized it was very low, but also talked about the player’s youth, and the lack of strikeouts sinkerballer guys usually exhibit. Overall I heard, “we’re being patient with Blake.”
I asked about whether they were interested in Cliff Lee, and I actually didn’t really catch the answer. It was quick.
Someone asked about trading within the division, and JD had a great line about how it’s a macho thing to say (“sure, I’ll trade within the division, I’m not scared”) but it just never happens. He referred to the Rheinecker/Koronka moves as the most recent. He said Jack Z up in Seattle was great to work with – a guy who had sane valuations on his personnel, and got back with answers quickly. Actually there was a lot about inter-GM dialogue… Someone asked whether there was resentment towards JP for maybe misinforming the Rangers about Halladay’s willingness to go to Texas, and JD said there wasn’t. He was complimentary of Kenny Williams’ aggressiveness, and around then said it’s uncommon to ask about a player out of the blue…that usually you wait for a GM to say someone’s available during day to day conversation.
JD is one articulate professional…he didn’t evade, he didn’t obfuscate. But hey, he said Newberg Night is sincerely one of his favorite nights of the year.
And what am I forgetting?

Will was answering the question, KG chimed in with the "owns a glove" comment, and Will agreed.

KG looked surprised when JD said much the same thing too; so, I wonder if he’ll re-evaluate after hearing the boos from us and JD backing that up too.
BTW, thanks muchly, Jamey! (I had a blast with Chuck in the PA booth.)

I think the reason CD gets downgraded
is that his spectacular plays are usually on bad throws from the left side of the infield. On batted balls, he has been nothing special, and the stats don’t really capture how many throwing errors he has saved.
From a stat standpoint, Hank looks much better.
One of the many problems with defensive stats and why they aren’t completely useful in making judgements on players. In a perfect world the person making the throw would be docked on their defensive stats for the inaccurate throw and the 1B making the play would get a bonus.

It wasn't too long ago
I was scolded soundly here for suggesting the difference in defense between Smoak and Davis would prove meaningless. 1B and C defensive evals are not as meaningful as other positions and Davis and Smoak are both good gloves at 1B, but no one should get too excited about that part of their games. The bat is the thing at 1B, obviously.

Yeah, I definitely believe
we need strong offensive production at 1B, given our C, SS, and our CF once Borbon is called up.

well that's not the right attittude at all
1b defense is ridiculously important – especially if you have a SS that can get to any ball, has the arm strength to get it in the vicinity of 1B, but can only guarantee that he can get it in the vicinity of 1B. just because you can’t quantify it doesn’t make it not important.
as for whetehr the evaluations are meaningful – I think if you blindly follow UZR, you will probably have issues. But the fact that davis flashed an above average glvoe for the first couple weeks is an important development.

I don't believe you can
emphasize defense over offense at every position on the field.

i just meant
you shouldn’t ignore 1B defense. I think it is fine that you opt for offense at 1b if your choice is between offense and defense. But if you have a choice between two good offensive 1b with marginal differences but the lesser offensive player is potentially better on defense, you might pick that guy if the defensive disparity is great enough (not exactly groung breaking stuff on my part).
I think the interesting development was CD seemingly closing the defensive gap but if he continues to be average, below average, I don’t think you need to mess around with a 1B platoon at all.

Out
But not because of the microsecond earlier that ball is in the glove. Out because it looks very impressive when the first baseman does that, plus the ump has a harder time seeing the batter’s foot and the glove at the same time (since they are farther apart due to the stretch). The call by the ump is subjective. I think the great stretches that Davis makes influences the call.

Probably true
But I still think there is a psychological element to the big stretch that will affect the ump on really close calls. Ties might not go to the runner.

In the long run, most likely
But right now, Davis (according to the club at least) seems to be the more polished of the two with Smoak likely to get there with a bit more playing time.

davis
well, he started out setting the world on fire even from a stats standpoint.
so:
1) we could possibly say that once Davis started slumping badly, his defense might have gotten a little worse (although that might be a stretch)
2) I don’t know if we can conclude that hank is actually better (or just objectively good at 1B defense) given that CD’s numbers were good, if not better, after a month.
One thing, Carroll has talked about seeing other clubs’ really advanced defensive metrics and that they are so much better than anything out on the internets. I would assume the Rangers have something in place like that too. Which is to say, JD saying Chris is good at defense possibly takes into account the ability to scoop the ball (or it could just be JD sticking up for one of his guys in a room full of obvious CD fans).

That was my question! I am sure that a lot of people in the room thought of that as well, but… still… I would like to take this chance to praise myself…
I asked KG to compare Smoak and Davis, and what their roles would be in the future, and also to compare them defensively. I love the Morneau comp… Good stuff.
The best part of the interaction was the groan of the crowd after hearing their answer. Later, JD was asked who had the better glove and showed no hesitation in his reply… and of course, received a good cheer.

The event was fantastic and thanks for everything. It was my first time to make it out and the BP guys were fielding questions when I walked in the auditorium at 3:15 and it was non-stop Q&A for 3 hours. The BP session was very informative and it was cool to see a fresh take on the questions we beat over the head all year long. Very nice and approachable guys too.
JD fielded a variety of questions, some you know he can’t talk about but most he’s very candid and frank. Nobody stood up and berated him this year so I guess that’s always a plus.
Great game to watch, there was a group of us over with Newberg. It was nice to meet you guys, even if you didn’t realize you were talking to me. I attached two pics I took pre-game.

Went pretty deep, too. He made the point of asking KG what ‘BA’ thought of Juri (to a good chuckle from the audience). JD said he expected Juri to be one of the top shortstop prospects in baseball in a very short order. Heady stuff.
Very interesting to note that KG agreed with keeping Profar at short (which JD was also adamant about). Goldstein intimated that high-end up the middle types are even more valuable than youngin’ power arms.
Kinda hope so, having Luery/Juri/Sardines coming up behind Kins, Elvis, and Vallejo (and Lemon?).

His position was basically, this is a 20 year old who they wanted to show confidence in, who they believed in and would be moving things around to make room for. This is someone that they expect to be a key part of the team going forward and a leader on this team.
He felt it would send extremely mixed messages to say, you are this important to us and this important to our future, but we are going to leave you in AAA for a month anyway because we want to take advantage of your arbitration situation years from now.

Nice answer, but I don't believe a second of it.
Complete bullshit.
They painted themselves in a corner with that one.
They Longoria’d Der-Hol, but they couldn’t do it with Andrus cause they had to throw a year of his team control on the live grenade that was the Face-to-third imbroglio.

I really don't think its BS
They didn’t really Longoria Holland either. He had very little experience above A Ball and no team would start a potential 1 year wonder in the Majors without getting some more experience in the upper levels.

So it was pure coincidence
that they brought Holland up the day after the cutoff for qualifying for a full year of service time?

No
But that doesn’t mean it was their plan all along. If they sent him down and then changed their minds, they might have figured, well we can wait a couple more days and get the service time benefit. Andrus’ situation was different.
And dirkatron is being too cynical. This front office has shown a tendency to give a nod to chemistry and keeping key players happy in some circumstances, so I don’t think Daniels is just blowing sunshine here.

The hell it wasn't their plan all along
Holland made 1 start in AAA. ONE. Went 4 innings gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. Then is not only brought up but had to be added to the 40 man roster to be brought up to pitch out of the bullpen. The day after the cutoff to qualify for a full year of service time.
Had Holland pitched half a season in AAA last year and then started this year there pitching lights out for a few games maybe I could buy the coincidence argument. but I don’t under these circumstances. The Rangers from spring training had a plan to maximize his time on the big league roster and executed it. Elvis’ situation was very different which is why even though I don’t like it I understand why it was done.

Cliff Lee
Thanks for the lengthy recap, hightowersmith.
I’m curious what others heard about the question about Cliff Lee.
I feel that the Rangers should have been heavily into looking at getting him, especially with what the Phillies gave up to get him.

Did anyone ask or do we know for sure exactly what's up with Miggy de los Santos?

Yeah,
apparently he was investigated, but the company that was investigating him was corrupted somehow, so a new company had to restart the investigation.

I heard that bit too.
I just have no idea what exactly that means.
I mean, what is he being investigated for? Is this an MLB investigation or a US immigration thing ot even a Dominican government investigation? If it’s an MLB thing, why is he being kept over there? And what’s the deal with him ever coming back?
The paucity of information here is truly frustrating.
Someboyd knows what’s up with this whole situation but no one is talking about it.

I took it as
MLB has to sign off on his visa as an employer, and they won’t do that until this investigation is complete.
I could be galaxies off on that though.
As far as I know, Uncle Bud ‘suggested’ he stay over there until the investigation get finished.

Yeah
I understood it to mean that they all have to go through a background check of sorts, and the company that was doing it is crooked, so they had to throw out all the work and start from scratch.
Boy would I like to see MDLS do some damage in a league in the states soon.

So, can anyone clarify a little more about the concern over Schepper’s arm action and whether that is something JD addressed in his Q&A?

It was more of a guess by Will Carroll as he said, “You can’t do an MRI of a shoulder in motion,” so nobody really knows. The way he illustrated it was by having a fist against a flat palm and said that was the way shoulders look, but when Tanner throws, they think that the shoulder comes out then slams back against the joint – like as if in mid-throwing motion, the fist jerks away from the palm then slams back into it in a very sharp motion.
JD did not speak about his shoulder.

I think it's clear he's not ready to come back and help anyone this year..
So he’s just laying back, rehabbing and waiting to see what the winter bidding might look like.
I’d put the chance of us Sheets giving us any special consideration at about 10%.

Right, but does Sheets come at a 10% discount to his price from last year?
