Minors - 8/3

NeRa struck out 5 and gave up only two hits in his 3 innings of work.  He ramped his fastball up to 95 MPH according to the radio guy.  Unfortunately, he also walked 4 and gave up 3 runs (2 earned).  I honestly fear for Dirkatron's life if follows up on his promise to attend a NeRa start in Hickory.

Kirkman and Mendoza are off to solid starts for Frisco and OKC, respectively.  Boggs has been on a tear lately

Two of my favorite new Rangers prospects, Braden Tullis and Eddy Escobar are scheduled to go for Spokane and the Arizona League Rangers.  Look for strikeouts and groundballs in those two games.

Use Shroom's calendar for links.

And if you want to see my thoughts following my first look at Lemon, Strop, Kiker, Phillips, Moreland, et al at the Frisco game yesterday, please check here.

Brandon Boggs is a Major Leaguer

2-2, HR.

.290, ~.410 OBP.

We’d be a better team if he was getting Hamilton’s AB’s right now.

probably so, but i dont expect him to be much more productive than he was last year

which is decent enough

How much of a prospect is Pimentel?

He had great numbers tonight but very blah for the year. Is there something here or is he just a guy? I’m speaking about Carlos the Hickory pitcher.

He's a prospect

He’s not a top three in the rotation type, but he’s thought of as a future major leaguer, probably in a back roto or relief role. If you compare what he’s done with other 19 year olds in full season ball, I think that his season is actually pretty impressive.

Moreland

Loved the write up on Moreland. David, after seeing this would you have Moreland in your top 15 for the Rangers?

You are obsessed with bodily wastes A turd being held under my nose, this team being a steaming pile, Jonny Donuts having a stinky diaper, the front office pissing themselves, the team crapping the bed…

I think you should seek counselling.

i've seen him several times, and while he didnt have the games he had last night, I came away with the same impressions

he definitely has a good command of the zone and rarely chases pitches with pop to all fields.

Moreland was #14 on the list I submitted to Joey a month ago

After seeing him in person, I would move him up to #11, one spot behind Robbie Ross and in front of what I consider to be the third tier of starting pitchers – Wieland, Kiker, Beavan, Hunter, and Poveda. That would also place Moreland #4 on the list of position prospects behind Smoak, Borbon, and MaxRam.

gotcha

didnt realize you had him that high to begin with

Tullis

3/2/0/0/1/2

36.1 IP, 9 BB, 38 K

Tullis deserved better - here's his last inning ...

Salem-Keizer Bottom 5th

•Ryan Cavan grounds out to first baseman Clark Murphy.
•Eliezer Zambrano singles on a ground ball to right fielder Miguel Velazquez.
[Murphy misplayed it into a single when the ball hugged the dirt and never came up]
•Evan Crawford doubles (1) on a ground ball to left fielder Aja Barto. Eliezer Zambrano to 3rd.
[Mendonca backed up on a 2-hopper right to him allowing the ball to play him – glances off his mitt and into foul territory – calling it a hit was a massive homer call by the Salem-Keiser scorekeeper]
•Ryan Lollis grounds out to first baseman Clark Murphy. Eliezer Zambrano scores. Evan Crawford to 3rd.
•Dan Cook doubles (10) on a fly ball to center fielder Kyle Rhoad. Evan Crawford scores.
•Luke Anders walks.
•Pitcher Change: Kyle O’ Campo replaces Braden Tullis.
•Drew Biery doubles (10) on a fly ball to center fielder Kyle Rhoad. Dan Cook scores. Luke Anders scores.
[naturally, Ocampo allows the inherited runners to score before closing out the inning with a K]
•Christopher Dominguez strikes out swinging.

Kirkman had a good start, its a little bit bumpy because of the one inning with multiple errors

and a coupe of walks that resulted from a ton of pitches in that inning. 6Ks good to seee, hopefully he can get closer to the K rate he had in high A with a little time

Neftali Feliz looked great in his two innings

Oh … wait. He was pitching for Texas? I guess he just made those Oakland hitters look like they were minor league players.

Eddy Escobar

Longest outing of the season for him last night. 5 ip with 6 hits, 0 walks, and 4 k.

For the season his bb:k in 32.2 ip is 10:38, and he has a nice groundball ratio. And he is 17 and will be until next April.

Wonder ...

whether Escobar starts in full season next year [Memorial Day-ish] or just goes to Spokane.

HIC’s roto next season? – Ross, Namirez, Doyle, Thompson, Tullis — Purke and Escobar drifting in late from extended ST maybe. Not quite as sexy as this year, but still might be interesting with Ross, Tullis and the late arrivals. Oh, and ADoyle Rulz!!

loves me some southpaws

Kinda nice to have an elite young ML LHP breaking in, an elite LHP coming up (MP), a decent, near ready LHP in Kiker, and a handful of really high ceiling lefties right behind him like Purke (crossing fingers), RRoss, EEscobar, and possibly even Guerris Grullon whom I have seen some nice reports on in the midseason stuff from Parks, Hindman, Cole.

20-yr-old LHP Chad Bell

He’s tearing up the Cape Cod League right now – 1.81 ERA, 45 IP, 26 hits, 14 BB, 44
Ks – Jason Cole sez he’s starting to hear positive things about him signing around the 17th w/the Rangers. He’s another lefty that might get in that 2010 HIC roto. Although, he is just a 14th-rounder, so best to wait and see when we get there I suppose.

by shroomer on Aug 4, 2009 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bell

He’s been drafted three times, but seems pretty good to do that well in the Cape as a Community College player.

14th Round

Is this a slotbusting issue? Like, maybe he’ll be announced around the deadline, too?

I think it will be a slot busting issue

but it originally was a draft and summer follow. He was told by the Rangers do well in the Cape league and we’ll give you a good offer. He’s upheld his end of the bargain now both sides are probably negotiating what exactly his bonus will be.

I expect him around the 17th and the more talk that goes on the more likely it is that he’ll sign. I think he and Cooper’s odds are starting to go up.

Nice.

Does anyone know when the Cape League is finished?

I really got to work on my reading comprehension… And I saw the original tweet.

Ah...

In my heart of hearts, no. Seen him a couple times over the years…there are some great songs, and I liked the demos I heard off his most recent. One of his lines about men being like horses kicking in their stalls, that came back to me recently. I like The Raconteurs, though.

I just took the plunge on M Ward. Seen him a number of times over the years as well, but the records only recently won me over (via pandora.com). Found a couple of the recent ones at CD Source. Good stuff…do you know it?

Love M. Ward - discovered him in a Noel Gallagher interview back a few

Noel was blown away, figured I should check him out. Good stuff.

Where you are at with M. Ward, just taking the plunge, I’m at that waypoint with Jack White. Until a few days ago I’d never heard his stuff, then I clicked on his version of Son House at youtube and was blown away. Kept on exploring when I realized his blues roots. This led me to the Raconteurs and Brendan Benson. Benson is pleasing to my adult ear in a harmless melodic way – harmless would seem to be the keyword I suppose.

Are the Greenhornes worth exploring?

by shroomer on Aug 4, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Love the Greenhornes

But that’s mostly based on seeing them a couple times. It’s like a band totally in charge of what they want to do…garagey, no need to impress with lots of experimentation, plenty of simple hooks. And the drummer is worth the price of admission all by himself.

yeah, dude defintely stands out

That drummer’s rolls and fills really give me a Keith Moon-y vibe. Jack White never wanders more than about 10 feet from his drum kit on the Racs’ youtube live videos – you can tell he loves playing with him.

Dude is funny, too. Somewhere in this 2-part Raconteurs vs Pete Townshend video that drummer gets off a hilarious quip about Jimmy Page.

Very nice...

About 99% of what Jack White (and Britt Daniel) does makes me stop in my tracks. He is flat out fascinating. I try to dismiss the stuff, like this new band Dead Weather, but I inevitably find the virtue in it.

Okay

Glad you mentioned Dead Weather ’cause I was unawares they existed. Think this is my fav song of theirs after first pass thru their roto – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QSkI6My1g&feature=related – I giggled all the way thru that video, btw – whatever that sez about me. My first impression of the DW is that I hope Jack White moves on to his next project pretty quick because I think I will like whatever he does NEXT better than DW.

Now I’m off to research the Greenhornes.

Little research here...

The first time I saw Greenhornes

Yah, I walked away from this show won over (that one’s a great tune in particular…).

A couple friends booked bands on occasion for their Sunday night DJing gig, and I saw Greenhornes there twice. Shout is now gone, but not forgotten.

You might like the guy who taped it, this omni-everywhere grassroots concert filmer. punkcast.com.
