Worst loss of any year

Others have been more dramatic or more of a beatdown, but this one simply disappeared into the night.

Tough way to lose.

I’m not saying the season is over or anything, but the Rangers sure as hell better come ready to fucking play tomorrow.

I disagree

every single one of them worked, except the last one. And CJ was coming in a close game regardless. Besides, that’s what happens when your starter gets hurt, and the guy replacing him isn’t stretched out. THe starter only went 5 innings.

That's why they call them business sox

Eddie had little to do with this loss

But look had bad he fell apart after the all star game last year. I don’t expect him to help out the Rangers much anymore this year. Time for new blood.

by Mark from OC on Aug 4, 2009 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok, sure

let’s decide what moves to make based on what he did last year instead of what he’s doing now, good idea.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Aug 4, 2009 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

And what is he doing now?

Falling apart. Look at his last 3 games OR the season as a whole. Eddie has not been a very good reliever.

by Mark from OC on Aug 4, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

You're right

3 games is a big enough sample to make that decision on. Much better than the dozen scoreless appearances that preceded these three games.

It’s the offense. Guardado is well down the list of problems. Like, after repainting the clubhouse.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Aug 4, 2009 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Right....

Prior to his last three games, Guardado didn’t give up a run from June 17 through July 29.

He’s not a problem.

by Darrell McKown on Aug 4, 2009 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for making my point

a Dozen appearances is not a big enough sample to make a decision on. How about using the season as a whole. The Rangers continue to bring in a reliever who has had an ineffective season.

Yes, the offense needs major work. But Eddie is the first person who needs to be removed from the roster as soon as they find a suitable situational lefty replacement.

Last time I looked he had an FIP below 3.

But still, he can’t be any worse at getting left-handers out than Eddie is.

by LSJ on Aug 4, 2009 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Eddie's appearance

had no affect on the game’s outcome, what the hell are you talking about? I’m fine with a better lefty replacement, but again, Guardado is just so far down the list of things we need to squawk about.

How about Hamilton and Kinsler hitting like A-ball failures? How about Millwood getting healthy? How about counting on O’Day maintaining an 86% strand rate and .255 BaBIP? I’d worry about Guardado well after all these things and more.

by t ball on Aug 4, 2009 12:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Reply fail

Guess you meant this for somewhere else because I never said in that post that Eddie’s appearance had an affect on this game’s outcome. In fact, I said above that “Eddie had little to do with the loss.” I bring it up because once again Eddie had a poor performance, which has been true too often in 2009.

by Mark from OC on Aug 4, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm kind of railing

All right

Actually, I like Eddie, think he can be a positive influence on certain players on the team at times, and am not a hater. But I don’t think he is an effective major league pitcher anymore, nor has he been this year with the exception of that one good streach of games. The Rangers need to learn when to cut bait.

That’s not exactly Ruth, Gehrig and McCovey the A’s roll out there in the 9th and ODay should have stayed out there as long as nobody got on base.

Also, Contreras is walking more guys this year and the Angels seem to feast on that. If the Angels had an offense like last year then I’d expect Contreras to have a similar start because his BABIP is about the same as last year (and close to his career norm).

This was a must win game to catch up to the Angels and Red Sox and the Rangers blew it. It was a huge and very horrible loss. Its going to take a lot of things going the Rangers way all of a sudden for them to get back into it and with the offense struggling as mightily as they are (and with Cruz potentially missing more time), things are looking shitty.

Stupid, its very, very, very common a baseball game is a must win

Last year, the Twins finished 1 GB of the White Sox. In 07, the Mets finished 1 GB of the Phillies. The Rockies snuck into the playoffs thanks to a tiebreaker game and the Diamondbacks only had a 1 game lead on that division. 1 game makes a difference plenty of times in baseball. Losing a game like this when we had it locked up is a huge loss.

I'm with you, t ball

this blog is full of a bunch of people that need to get their hormones straightened out.

It’s freaking baseball, losses are going to happen a large percentage of the time. They might even be unexpected, heart-wrenching losses. The fact that this is one of our first 9th inning collapses since April says a lot about this team.

The fact that it occurred on a bunch of pretty-weakly hit seeing-eye singles just means we ran into some bad luck last night.

Everyone relax

Bad luck

and bad defense. Especially Arias. No way should Jack Cust ever get an infield single off you.

Like I said in the GDT

Arias needed to charge that ball and had a good chance to get the out. Young just doesn’t have any range and while I don’t expect that to be an easy out, a better 3B has a shot at that. And then the final hit that lost us the game was Cruz getting hurt and not being able to cleanly field and throw the ball back in. Horrible, horrible, horrible way to lose a game.

I really wish I had the time

to work out the probability of a win in that situation with the different fielding positions.

I have a feeling that the ball is hit right down the line so rarely, that it would actually be worth it to just position them to field the grounder that is much more likely to be hit. Especially on a hard-thrower like C.J.

that goes after people and isnt afraid of contact because he knows his stuff is good enough to blow past guys, even if its only low to mid 90’s. Closers

never have bad games? How many appearances does Wilson have this year, and how many of them are “bad outings”? Ok, when you’re done with that, go find a list of closers or other relievers that have a better record this year. It’s a short list.

Plan and simple

the roll of the closer is to get outs even in tough situations, he didnt do it tonight and every time he comes in, I get a bit weak in the stomach. The guy picks at the plate and doesnt go after people. Then gets behind in the count and has to groove one that gets driven.

Feliz. Secondary stuff lookin’ good. Locating on the edges of the zone, throwing strikes at 3 distinct speeds — around 80, 90, and effin’ 100. Filthy. For me that was almost the pitching equivalent of last year’s Hamilton HR derby, where every pitch was like some kind of show.

I hope Cruz isn’t hurt too seriously. Maybe this brings up Boggs or Davis if he goes on the DL.

They’ve prepped him for this bullpen role, and they do need to limit his innings this year. It’s not like it was with Dutch, who hadn’t pitched out of the bullpen since rookie ball or something, and got brought up after once stinking start in AAA.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Feliz run out there for 5 inning starts. I think you could still be careful with him and have kept him as a starter. But there isn’t a hitter in the system who can handle LHP who keep it down and throw breaking stuff. Unless maybe Adam Fox or Tommy Mendoca can do that, and neither of them works – one isn’t a regular option and the other is four years away from being prepped.

I didn’t stay up late to watch him pitch and if his secondary stuff is good then I’ll gladly be wrong. but then you compound the offensive problems with Cruz getting taken out… argh.

you would have thought we just lost game 7 of the ALCS

that loss did suck, but man this site knows how to kneejerk. lol. It’s baseball. This happens. We still have a shot this year, albeit, the angels have to stop playing out of their minds, but if they keep it up, this game really doesn’t matter too much. We need another big game from Holland tomorrow, though. And, we get to face the Angels head on very shortly.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

You set yourself up for luck, good or bad.

Arias was set up for bad luck by him being put in a position to have to play a hop off that grass/dirt seam.

Omar charges that and gets it before it hits that spot. Then we’re all on hear heralding the might Happy arm as he goes out and bangs chicks with Cruz.

You also need to understand your players as well.

Elvis’s range at SS means MY can hug the line a little closer than if Omar is playing SS. Same thinking here. Arias has a noodle arm and range is so-so. Plus he has limited experience and plate SS mainly in AAA. All I’m saying is to put him in a position to make limited decisions and mistakes. Screw the shift and get him on the dirt so the ball has no chance of making that hop.

by AceJC on Aug 4, 2009 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions

fair points

I don’t like drastic shifts either-my statement is simply, his positioning could have just as easily saved a hit as cost one. Noodle arm or not, Cust is real slow. Oh well, hell with this game-go get em tomorrow.

by DShep on Aug 4, 2009 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually not so much CJ

Although he started three separate hitters 1-0. Leads to not so good results. It’s factuial that the offense doesn’t produce. But try to figure out a solution. Wash doesn’t get it that Cruz has reverse splits, moving him to cleanup against lefties. No one on the 25 (or for that matter three levels deep into the system) can hit Lefties who depend on breaking stuff down. The best player on the team (choose either one) is mired in a batting slump and has been lost to DL time. Wash sets lineups on precedent and possibility, and although better lately, has left gaps in an already less than productive sequence. And now Cruz may be too dinged up to play (hopefully he’ll rest a day or two and cortisone or other therapy the ankle in tome for the LAAA series). Anderson has become pretty good lately, and given his characteristcs, isn’t ever going to be a good matchup for the Rangers. Young was on the line and unable to get one decisive hit , and God knows why the shift was employed with Arias deep, who can’t even throw effectively from inside the dirt. And yeah it was just chance Cust’s ball was weakly hit and went right to him.

It’s just a loss. And in situational terms, an awful loss, in which things that should have worked just didn’t.

You say that...

as if Anderson is a bad pitcher.

Not sure if that was your intention there or not, but that kid has been pitching very well lately. Imo he looked really good today. I actually wouldn’t bitch about the offense or BGL today. I chalk today’s game up to just one of those games that will happen a few times every season.

We needed to let his curveball fall for a strike a couple more times

I felt like we were chasing it a little too often, but it was a nasty pitch

Yup.

I’m really not sure why you would expect a team that scored two runs off of Ian Snell the day before to score any more than two off of Brett Anderson.

The 81-83 mph pitch

Wait, was that the curve and not the slider? It looks like a slider but thats too slow and I know I had read his curve doesn’t have the typical break yet…

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 4, 2009 1:45 AM CDT reply actions

Was curious about that as well...

not sure how he could throw his change in the low 90’s and his slider be in the low 80’s.

Either way, it impressed the hell out of me.

Worst Managing Job of the Year

This one was not on CJ., anyone who watched this team knows that he has been over used and it bit him last night, when the dumb ass manager started the inning with O’Day i said to myself well he finally made a smart move, by giving CJ a night off, next thing i know Dumb Ass is bringing CJ in, i had the feeling of a loss right at that moment.

Then you have the so called second baseman playing outside the infield lip, did this ass wipe not see the Marlon Byrd Hit, how stupid can you get, you go one night from the smartest 2nd baseman in the league to the dumbest, if the rangers do not take the next 3 and at least 2 of 3 against the Angels the season is done, and dats da facts jack.

You got the feeling of a loss coming

When the guy with a 1.67 ERA and a .200/.285/.296 opponent batting line over the last three months came in?

Uh-huh.

I have no idea why Eddie Guardado pitched last night, and I think infield shifts are pretty useless (especially when you’ve got an anorexic elf with the baseball instincts of a doorknob playing second base) but you’re really going to take issue with the use of the guy who has arguably been our best reliever since May to try and get a save?

CJ is one of my favorite players and last night was not his fault he did his best, but the guy has looked worn down of late and last night it bit him, so the 1.67 and all the other nerd numbers you whipped out are meaningless, he is not a machine, so yeah i had a feeling.

Everyone who jumped all over CJ for blowing the game last night need to chill the fuck out. IF single to Cust, ground ball single through the hole, and ground ball single to where the 3B would normally be. Chalk this one up to bad luck or whatever but its not on CJ.

The defense had a meltdown

after carrying the team the whole year. Neither Young, Cruz, nor Arias covered themselves in glory in the 9th. If any one of those three make the play, it might not be a loss.

If Young isn't guarding the line and a ball gets by him

to the corner, everybody in here would be screaming at Washington for not using a basic defensive coverage. You can’t rail on Washington for that.

Using CJ like he did when he wasn’t rested knowing the A’s were going to most likely roll out those RH pinch-hitters when O’Day looked just fine is where I question Wash.

The one that really hurt was Cust getting on base and I’m not sure Arias throws him out if he fields the ball cleanly. There was a play a couple of innings earlier (can’t remember batter) where Arias nonchalantly threw it to 1B and barely got the runner out.

ODay had maybe 2 pitches in the 8th innning

and retired the first batter in the 9th with no problems.

He was effective, throwing strikes, had a two run cushion and like I said last night – the A’s weren’t about to roll Ruth, Gehrig and McCovey out of the dugout to face him plus CJ had a tough ride in the last game of the Seattle series. Why force the issue and make CJ pitch again?

CJ has been great this year and truly unappreciated by most in this place mainly because he’s different and outspoken (the big sins in LSB). The few times he has been ineffective usually came when he had been rode hard the night previous – see NY Yankees game in May where he threw 27 very dominant pitches and then was called on 14 hours later to get a save.

His splits against RH batters aren't great, and neither are his splits on no rest.

That said, if he wants to be a go-to guy close and late, he’s got to perform in those situations.

by Snark on Aug 4, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

CJ didn't pitch badly (induced batters into hitting 2 balls that should have been outs)

but the problem was that he entered that game with only so many bullets given that he had thrown 19 fairly high stress pitches on Sunday. When those balls found holes it was church.

Washington didn’t have to make that move and tried to shoe-horn a save on CJ’s ledger when it was unnecessary.

O’Day looked just fine and given that Wash had used so many pitchers earlier in the evening, he should have tried to ride him home.

I would have agreed with you if you had added the word consistently.

If you can’t consistently get 3 outs with a 2 run lead then you got problems. Fortunately for the Rangers they can, last night not withstanding. You don’t win every game with a lead in the 9th. Every team will have a blown save once in a while unless you have a roided up Gagne as your closer.

CJ has been one of our most valuable players/pitchers this season.
