Not in significance.
When you go to your bullpen with a run lead in the eighth, you expect that to hold up.
When you have the bases loaded and no outs, you expect to score at least one. Just mind-boggling that this team can’t score more runs.

Doesn't get much worst then the Oakland one...
There’s nothing worst then dominating all game to let it slip like that with a couple cheap hits and 1 strike away from victory.

The Metrodome
Should not be destroyed. It should be preserved. Like Auschwitz. Or a Holocaust museum. I think the only Ranger who has ever hit well there was Dean Palmer. Even houses of horror should be commemorated.

I think it’s interesting that you find the day-to-day fluctuations in the playoff odds so interesting. For example, did you know that the unadjusted 1-day change, according to BP, was ~ +5.5 for the Rangers after yesterday? What does that tell you, exactly? What’s interesting about that?

Hey, man, I'm not sure why you've got such a boner for me...
But you’re still not getting my point (or at least ignoring it for the sake of some ridiculous condemnation of my interest in the odds). The impact of one loss on playoff odds will naturally increase as more games are played (and fewer remain). I’m curious to see how much bigger the impact on our odds this loss had over the loss we had 5 days ago to the Yankees, and so on and so forth. Run along now.
by JDT217 on Aug 30, 2009 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hey, man, go fuck yourself.
I was asking honest questions: what you find so interesting about the day-to-day change in playoff odds, and what you think the difference in fluctuations is of those odds as the season grows to a close. I honestly don’t know ~ I don’t follow these things day-to-day, so I can’t tell you what the change was after the loss to the Yankees five days ago.

I hate the AL Central so much
Screw the White Sox for being one of the biggest collections of douches in sports history, screw the Tigers, screw the Indians for trading Martinez to the Red Sox, and screw the Twins for their mystifying ability to beat us when our starters put out QS’s.
And then there’s the Royals, biggest punch line in MLB, and they stike us out 28 times in a game.
Top to bottom, that division can get chlamydia.

I don't think Wash is a good tactical manager
but right now with a young team I think we’re probably better off with a better motivator. Thats one thing you have to give Wash is he does have the team playing with more fire than they have in ages.
What do voluntary mean?

I never said "all of it"
But he needs to not be afraid to pull a guy because he isn’t the best person for that situation. IMO it seems he doesn’t want to hurt the feelings of the guy by yanking him. What about the the guy who’s getting snubbed by sitting on the bench. Murphy must be fuming seeing Elvis and Borbon getting AB’s vs. a righty when he smacked a hit into right field the last time he say Nathan.

I don’t care if he’s fuming or not. He’s got a sub-700 OPS in August, he’s 4 for his last 27, and he’s a DP risk. Letting Elvis and Borbon hit made sense.

Murphy has a better OBP and Slugging than Elvis vs righties
and the same AVG. So the stats back Murphy. If you want to go with who’s been doing better lately, look at Murphy’s at bat versus Nathan two nights ago. Nathan was rattled and seeing the guy who almost ripped a game tying HR the last time he saw him would also work in our favor. Murphy was better.
Also, Davis’s glove in the 8th is much more important then Hank’s bat in the 9th. That’s another miss.

Also, Elvis is 4-21 the last 6 games. Again, stats aren’t overbearing large to have Elvis in over Murphy. And I don’t care if Murphy is blue and playing in just his jock, he has a better chance versus a righty than Elvis does.

But I never used that as the basis for an argument.
I think Andrus and Murphy bring different things to the table in that situation, and I don’t agree that not pinch-hitting the latter for the former was a stupid move (or lack thereof).

But Murphy is an improvement
even if it is marginally in your thinking. So why not do it? That’s like telling Cruz, “Hey, this guy usually hits shallow left field, but don’t worry about taking those 5 steps in.” and then the batter hits a ball that lands 6 feet in front of Cruz.

No, it's not. (And no, that's not my thinking.)
And while I wouldn’t have been upset with Washington if he’d decided to pinch-hit Murphy for Andrus, I don’t think the decision not to was stupid. I think there are justifications on either side of that coin.

I didn't say it was a stupid move.
It wasn’t the best move to make/not make. Murphy put the team in a better chance to score runs, win the game. The decision not to put him in was Wash’s and it was a bad decision.
Also, saying there is justification on either side of the coin isn’t the best arguement. If you read the posts around here, there are justifications for some completely ridiculous things. Does that make them right?

You're right: you didn't say "stupid."

He doesn't PH.
Anyone know of a place to find out how many times a manager makes a sub in the game? I can’t recall the last time Wash made a change in the lineup other than an injury.
Wash has his good points, but for some reason when I watch him during a game, he does a poor job with in-game managing. His lineup is set in stone. It even looks like it pains him to remove a pitcher, especially a RP.
The guy in the game is his guy, bottom line. It’s like he doesn’t have a bench. It hurts the team at time. This was one of them IMO.

Well, I can tell you that
the Rangers are tied with Toronto for fewest pinch-hit PAs in the AL. Of course, in that very small sample size, Texas is also second-worst in the league in PH production.
I’m not sure you can say much given those stats, especially without more context (such as who’s been available to pinch hit, and in what situations), but there you go.

Murphy may be slightly better
But Elvis is going to have to come through in the 9th inning against a tough closer in the future for this team to be successful. Why not give him a shot? I could see PH Davis for similar reasons but not Murphy. I bet Davis wants revenge against Nathan after shitty call the other night.

How about because we are in a WC race and this win would certainly help that.
That’s why Murphy should be in. And I would think that Murhpy would want more revenge on his 18 in miss of a HR of that same inning you’re talking about. I would have more faith in Murphy than Davis.
I’m all about giving Elvis some time, but he’s 21 for crying out loud. He’ll get his reps. He has plenty of time to do that.

Murphy would have a better chance to succeed in that situation than Elvis. That’s my stance. What difference does it make how much better Murphy would be?
How much does having Elvis in there instead of Murphy help the team? I know it’s hindsight and I hate to use it, but Andrus struck out on three swinging strikes. There is not much worse you can get.

not to me
That is not a situation you can replicate often. I’d rather see Elvis give it a go. The fact that he struck out in three pitches in that situation proves to me that he needs more work in clutch AB’s like that one. I would have like to have seen him come through but players dont just automatically become great clutch hitters.

How much more likely do you think Murphy was to not make an out than Elvis in that situation?
1 in 100? 2 in 100? 10 in 100?
And how much more likely would Murphy have to be to not make an out in that situation to justify pinch hitting him, do you think?

Just to interject
Check the K rates. Maybe it’s just my impression, but I’d think Andrus (with less power) makes better contact than Murphy, i.e. stikes out at a lesser ratio. Maybe I’m wrong about that, without checking.

I don't know. That's what I'm trying to say.
I can’t quantify a number because you can’t prove it either way.
I think that Murphy would have a better success rate in that situation, versus Nathan, than Elvis would. I don’t know how much more likely Murhpy would be to get a hit/bring in a run/not strike out than Elvis. But I believe that Murphy is better in that spot than Elvis.
To try and answer your question, I think that if Murphy and Elvis were put in that spot 100 times, Murphy would succeed at least one more time than Elvis. And that is all I would need to justify putting in Murphy.

To me...
…that one more time doesn’t justify what you lose on the basepaths with Murphy vs. Elvis, the lack of flexibility you have later in the game by losing Murphy, and the downgrade from Elvis to Vizquel for the rest of the game.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 30, 2009 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
This wasn't in the 5th or 6th inning.
Muphy would have been the 2nd lead run if he gets a hit. The winning run if someone in front of him gets out from a later at bat.
You still have plenty of flexibility on the bench. You still have Borbon who can play outfield from DH and CD and Tea and Omar. It’s not like he was the catcher.
And the rest of the game? It would be the bottom of the ninth in a perfect world. It’s not always like that but even if it is extra innings, these aren’t relief pitchers. They can go out for more than a few innings after sitting on the bench all day.
Long term thinking is great, but here we needed to get those runs in, especially at the anemic rate we have proven to score.

Many other implications in that move
Are you prepared to throw a 42-43yo SS out there on turf for the 9th? Is that player suffering from a sore knee, hamstring, or back that has not been disclosed to the general public?
Are you prepared to run Murph out to the OF? Is he hurting at all, he does have a history of knee problems?
If you pull Murph after one AB, are you prepared to play with an even short(er) bench for a potential extra inning contest?
Answer all of those questions, in real time, with the expectaions of many, many people and millions of dollars on your head, and then we’ll talk.
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
"When you have a weapon on your shoulder like he has, you can be cool." RW on Perez
And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.

Yes
It’s one inning. You act as if he is going to walk on hot coals. Should he not walk on the turf with the rest of the team during a win to slap hands with those poor old knees? If it goes extras, they guy certainly can play. He played two nights ago on this field. He obviously can play nine innings, why can’t he go out there for a bottom of the inning or gasp, maybe a few extra?
Murphy is done after the at bat. Omar goes in for him. Non-issue.
You still have Tea, and CD. If you saw what the Twins did with their pinch running, I would say that was quite helpful in them beating us today.
And don’t be a dick about real time, millions of dollars.. blah blah. This is the LSB and Wash is in the majors. I post things here, he makes the baseball decisions. That’s what I do and that’s what he gets paid to do. I disagree with his decision.

You can "take the season" and still want something better.
People seem to believe that next season will definitely be better than this one, no matter what. They forget that a lot of things had to come together to get us to the point we are right now, like Scooter winning 14 games, Face having a career year, and the bullpen pitching very well (with a few obvious exceptions).
We have no guarantees that things will get better next season, that’s why it sucks to see us squander opportunities today. Opportunities like having the bases loaded in the ninth against Nathan that may not come around again.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. On the other hand
there’s plenty of reasons to think that next year should be better than this year.
The young pitchers, the core of our rotation now, have experience behind them. Our offense is likely to be better, mostly because I think its going to be hard for it to get much worse. I think Borbon in leadoff with Kinsler hitting lower in the order for the whole year should be an advantage. One has to hope that Hamilton hits like something more than he has been this year.

Reminds me of a story
I was five y/o and my mother promised me if i behaved all morning then I could have icecream that afternoon.
I was on my best behavior, and she told me we could stop by earlier than we had planned.
Up to Dairy queen we went. Those chocolate dipped cones were the best stuff on earth. So in the backseat I sat licking away until 5 mins later we pulled into the driveway.
I stayed outside (cause i couldn’t make a mess in the house).
My older brother walks up to the house having just got outta school. He sees me eating the icecream and asks me where I got it.
“Mom gave it too me b/c i was good today.”
He knocked the icecream outta my hands and I sat crying watching the ants eat all that sweet stuff I was suppose to be enjoying…..
Thats about how I feel after each loss this season. Sure I got to enjoy the 5 minutes of it driving back home. But that doesnt make up for the greater loss of what was wasted.

There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality which excites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

I would imagine they’re inspected by people who look the other way, because I’m pretty sure having what is an “ineffective” muffler is against state law, too.
If safety were the reason I’d still hate the motherfuckers who do this in the parking lot. They park in a garage. If they want to warm up the block do it in there and then drive the fuck away. There’s no reason to sit out there and do it except for “hey, look at me I have a loud ass fucking motorcycle and that makes me so cool”.
But, no, at 40 mph and up you cannot hear even the loudest bike until maybe it’s right behind you. The faster you’re going the closer you have to be to each other to hear it. Routinely I’m passed by motorcycle guys who are going in between lanes, going at extremely high rates of speed, or both. You can’t expect anyone to see you when you’re going thirty to forty miles faster than the flow of traffic. Doesn’t matter if you’re in a car or on a bike. And you’re certainly not going to be heard by anyone you haven’t passed already. So I don’t buy that this is for safety….I drive too much and have seen too much. The only time loud exhaust is going to help you would be on city streets and traffic jams, or whenever people are going slow.
It’s a nuisance.

That's a very
self-serving reply, or if you’re not a motorcyclist, a comment one would highly approve of. They do not need to be that loud. That’s just a convenient excuse for a macho display of noise.

Also
warming up the engine is one thing.
This dude came out of the garage, drove out onto the street and into the parking lot, and sat there and revved it for about ten minutes, no lie. I live on the seventh floor and it was drowning out the conversation in my apartment. I even watched him pull into a part of the street that was blocked off as a “median” and do it again. Then he turned slowly around and drove past the building in the other direction.
Truly annoying.

I don’t know why the cops don’t crack down on that. And I never saw this guy today, but from the sound of the motors I heard there were at least three.
It really baffles me. Why on Earth would someone want to ride something that goddamn loud? I bet they have tiny, tiny penises.

One that sucks, to be sure, but only one loss. They get back out there tomorrow and can be right where they were before today. The season’s not over by any stretch of the imagination.
This “sky is falling” mentality has got to go. I’ll be at the Ballpark tomorrow cheering just as hard as if they had won 100-0. It’s one game; literally 1/162nd of the season.

Of course people are going to take it harder than an early season loss. It’s not often that we have been in this position, so I think it’s natural for people to be upset at blowing a winnable game that we really needed.

Half of you guys are fucking crazy.
At the beginning of this road trip if at the end of it you would have said we’d be only 5 out and 3.5 out I think you’d take it. I remember a lot of people saying as long as we make it past this road trip, and we did. It could have been a lot better, but it could have been A LOT worse. But this one isn’t deciding anything, look at the Giants after that crushing lost against the Rockies they fell 4.5 out. Guess what happened? They played the Rockies again will take 2 of 3 and they’re only like 1 or 2 out now. The fans said the season over when clearly it’s not.
If we get it together after this loss, and get the division down to 3 or 4 games before we play them….then why the fuck can’t we do it? We sweep one series against the Angels we’re tied or one game out. We just have to stay 3 or 4 our till then. If we’re 7 games out when that time comes then yes we’re screwed. But not yet.

They need to have it in their mind that the season starts right now.
This upcoming two weeks is the biggest two weeks of the season. I really think our best shot still is in the West. Since we play the angels 7 times. People say it’ll be hard winning 5 more games than them in one month, but we play them SEVEN times. We can beat them 5 times just by ourselves.
If they can get it to 3 games out when we play the Angels I’ll feel really good, and it’s possible. The angels have a tough stretch after the Kansas series. If we play like we can play it’s entirely possible to get it down to 3.

that really sucked. I’m trying to keep this year in perspective though.
This is a very talented and young team. They’re inconsistent. People keep saying they keep fighting back, and they do. However they also find a way to lose games that they need to win to not just fight back, but to pull even or ahead in the WC or AL West. I’m not throwing in the towel yet, but time is running out in ’09.
Just about every player that can help this team continue to improve next year will be back. There will also be some dead weight cut loose along with the infusion of more young talent. I can tell you this, the experience this team is gaining right now will help them in the next few years.

He has two things that go way against him. He thinks too much when he gets in trouble, and he has the worst luck ever. I don’t think there was a single hard hit ball that inning, and thats the same for every blown loss for him. A couple of bounces don’t go his way, and he over thinks and walks a batter. Though I think that today's loss puts the playoffs way too far out of reach.
…it’s been one hell of a season to remember. I can’t remember if I’ve been this excited for the future of one of my favorite sports teams (except for the 2006 Fighting Irish, but they we’re way too overrated). Watching Feliz, Holland, Borbon, and Elvis all have really good success this year is very gratifying in it’s own. Add Smoak to that mix next year and we have a fantastic core of good players.

lol way too far out of reach.
The only thing I ask is in two weeks if we’re 3 games out about to play the Angels. You admit that you were wrong. If they’re not I’ll admit I was wrong.
If they just play terribly then we’ll call it a draw.

Oh hell yeah I'll admit I'm wrong.
And happily do so.
And when I say way too far out of reach, I don’t mean like it’s going to take everything we got, just us getting lucky.

A lot can happen in 33 games...historically, that's been proven time and again...
Boston has a ton of gut-check games left. Plus, if the Rangers have taught us anything this year it’s that they fight back when we least expect it.

Can't figure out all the remaining matchups
But at a glance, 11-4 over the next 15 would go a long way toward establishing things. The mid September date (17th or 18th) should be a much clearer picture.

If we're 3 out possibly 4 when we play the angels the 18th? I think. We're still in it.
If we’re not then boo.
But you know its possible for the Red Sox to go on a three game losing streak while we win 3. That’s not like impossible it happens all the time. If that happens we’re right back in it in just three days. A lot can change.

Could be
But I hadn’t considered taking any game lightly, or any opponent. If it happens that the Rangers get beat down a game or three, that happens. But it seems they will have to win an extradordinary number of the next 15-16 games to stay in it.

Hey guys, great series
it was a lot of fun to watch. I really hope you guys go on a big run, I’d much rather see you guys in the playoffs than Boston.
Good luck :)
P.S. Sorry about playing like shit against the Angels, although we swept them in the beginning of the year. And uh, if you happen to play the Tigers, beat the shit out of ’em
Thanks!
