I mean, I guess it would just be a guy who you know, grabs bananas and runs. Or, um, a banana that grabs things. I don’t know. Why would a banana grab another banana? I mean, those are the kind of questions I don’t want to answer.

After watching this game, and knowing we have two games tomorrow, pitched by Nippert and McCarthy, what makes you optimistic about the playoff chances?
that our offense
managed to break out for 10 runs tonight?
yeah
they were loose enough, slapping the ball around when they were down by so much, then when the get within 2 or 3, just missing 2 3-run HR’s that normally would have gone out in the ballpark in Arlington. It felt likeone they were within a HR away, that’s what they were shooting for.
I'm not going to say anything about playoffs. about how close we came. about this game.
I’m going to enjoy the rest of the season whether it ends in early october, or late. Because either way there is not going to be baseball for awhile in a month.
Time to eat this one off.

Anyone hear Josh give a shout out to “Lane and Megan from Carrollton” the night the Rangers got beat in NY a couple of days ago? That was me.

I think the Rangers need to
go back and watch the double-header against the Orioles awhile back and repeat.
Let's see, after these last two losses, here's my prediction for tomorrow...
We lose the first game 22-21, and then lose the second 1-0 on a perfect game
.
Adam Lind sodomizes Dusty Tits on the mound during game one, Toronto wins 9-3.
Brandon McCarthy and his “new delivery” get rocked in game two to the tune of 12-5.

Ron didn't allow 10 runs as the starting pitcher.
You can say he should have taken Holland out with the bases juiced, but there were no outs at that point. Nobody but Neftali, on this staff, could get out of there without runs being scored. Maybe DOD.
So it’s maybe 8-0 instead of 10. We still have to come back from a huge margin.
Ron didn’t give up 7 in the ninth, either. Though I guess we could argue whether Grilli should have been in there with a one-run deficit to begin with.
My criticisms of Ron are well-known, but 18-10 isn’t on him. That’s just terrible play all around. I was particularly disgusted with Murphy in left, myself.

If Holland doesn't give up the slam there
And we escape the inning with 2 or even 3 runs scored instead, we’re either tied or leading going into the 9th.
I think you can say both leaving Holland in and Wells coming down with that Davis line drive where the two turning points in the game for us.

I think he is
probably just blaming him for letting it get to 11, in a pennant race in late Aug, you can’t as a manager let it get that out of control, if he gets Dutch outta there with it at 7 we have a better chance at coming back, but Ron definitely didn’t allow 18 runs

"...like some Russian priest fresh off a bottle of potato vodka and a box of cigars." -t ball
Can't blame RW
Can’t blame him for Holland just losing control tonight and not having any command
Can’t blame him for going with Grilli in the 9th when the last couple of times he has shut down the opposing team
Can’t blame him for Strop coming in and not being able to get the last out
Can’t blame him for the offense finally deciding to come alive at 11-0
You could blame him for leaving Holland in for too long, yet when you are going into a DH tomorrow, you can’t use up the bullpen tonight and pray and hope Nipps and BMac go 7+ tomorrow
It just seems that when there is a win, the credit goes to the players. When there’s a loss, blame goes almost entirely on the manager. Yeah, he might make bad decision here and there, but we’re 72.58. A manager has most of the credit for getting us there
Bill Simmons: "I will tell you right now, if the Boston Red Sox traded Clay Buchholz for Justin Smoak, I will run around my neighborhood naked...celebrating for an hour. I love Justin Smoak"
You certainly blame Wash
for letting the game get out of control. He should have been pulled when he hit Scutaro. Also, the rosters expand tomorrow. Eyre and Moscoso will be called up to help in the pen. So Ron can’t use “save the bullpen” as an excuse for leaving Holland in the game.

Sure he can....
Without benefit of hindsight, being down 6-0 early is usually a sign that “is just isn’t our night”. Burning through the pen the day before a DH, when the chances of even making the game close are slim, is bad managing.
Oh, and using up your best relievers in a lost cause and then blithely suggesting that callups will be just fine isn’t all that smart either. Look how many guys we ended up burning through; if Holland could have just finished off that inning, it’s one less pitcher we use up.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
I disagree completely with "most." At that point, you're doing exactly what you lambast everyone else for.
The manager gets too much credit when the team wins, too much blame when the team loses. Just like every coach in every sport.
The problem I have with Wash is that his mistakes are magnified by the context in which he makes them. The little mistakes that Texas_Dawg comes on here after and says “It’s just one game” have now piled up on us to make seven, eight, or maybe even ten games. Ten games is the difference between a big lead in the division and where we are now.

Blame Washington
for starting the ninth with Grilli. Down 1 after the hitters had fought back, only to go with your worst pitchers? I really thought FF would start the ninth.
Washington has a set script that a six year old could follow when it comes to relief pitching. The Rangers have been winning in spite of him not because of him.
and Adam starts off the daily thread..

I grew up (and I still am) as a Dodger fan which
probably explains my exasperation with how piss-poor the Rangers have been historically run.
Texas Ranger fans have been dumbed down by their ownership and performance of the team in general so the bar of expectations is held low and the fans accept it.
What the Dodgers did last year and this year is what teams with a good chance to win it all do.
Teams like Texas sit there with their thumbs up their ass while the usual local idiots sit on their hind legs and praise the owner hoping for a biscuit.

Carlos Gomez should be beaned in the nuts every other PA just for being Carlos Gomez.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock
I support this policy
As part of the “Built for Fun” campaign, children should be allowed to throw dodgeballs at Carlos Gomez and Juan Rivera.

EG's postgame poll
Who should be the Player of the Game from the Rangers’ 18-10 loss to Minnesota on Monday?
Whoops.

So it must be nice to be a Dodgers fan huh
I wouldn’t mind Thome taking Blalocks place on the bench, especially since the Sox payed Thome’s salary
If he comes here, he probably takes over at DH.

ok, sounds really good
they gave up what a 26 year old AAA IF for him, sounds like Arias would have been plenty

Yeah
Well, the way things are looking now, I’m not sure if the Rangers wouldn’t just rather focus on the young guys for the last month of the season.
But it certainly is a spectacular pickup for the Dodgers, and would’ve been a nice one for us, too. I wouldn’t mind seeing us sign Thome to be our DH next year if we feel Smoak needs more time in AAA, myself.

I totally
understand the young guys, but what young guy have we started at DH lately, its either been pudge, AJ, Murph, Hammilton, or Cruz

I Can't Believe....
I sat through that entire game tonight at the ballpark. Pathetic attendance, we moved right in front of Josh and Tom on 2nd deck most of the game. It was exciting for awhile, but damn that 9th inning…..
I was planning on going to the doubleheader tomorrow, but tonight just took way too much out of me. I’ll watch on FSSW.
We stayed for the whole thing too.
My friend Stephen yelled the entire game, also.
I already took PTO for half the day tomorrow. I’ll be there even though I kinda want to crawl in a hole and die. I don’t like our chances tomorrow, not at all.
We should have just hit Adam Lind right off the bat last time he came up. Get it over with, and it only gets in one run.

Yes
Yes, it was. After a somewhat crappy night’s sleep I have found this:
The last thing I want to do today is go watch this team play two.
But I’ll be there anyway.

Anyone see Derek Holland's Facebook status just now?
I like that. I like it a lot better than the inspirational stuff Grilli usually puts up after he blows a game…

Actually...
In that caption, he was watching the Rangers. He’s smiling because he knows the spotlight is turning to the Cowboys… just as sure as the sun rises, the Rangers are irrelevant come football season.
Does that performance give credence
to the theory that are hitters have done well in the past because we gave up lots of runs and opposing pitchers were not concentrating?
That is certainly what happened last night.
"We have a better chance to win with other guys in the lineup," said Blalock, who is hitting .190 the past 30 games. "That’s something I’ve got to deal with."
I think there's a *little bit* of something to that
The Rangers are certainly getting more teams’ best efforts. But I still think there is something wonky with the plate approach of the hitters.
You can really tell when there is a concerted effort to work counts. Many of the guys are actually pretty good at it. They just choose not to do it, or wait until it is too late. If this lineup were more patient like they’ve (on occasion) shown they can be, they could really be dangerous. But that statement is about as profound as saying water is wet.
