Nelson Cruz out for a few games

Nelson Cruz is apparently going to be out for a few games, after spraining his ankle on the last play of last night's game, but the Rangers are hoping he'll be back quickly so they aren't putting him on the disabled list just yet.

That said, Cruz being out means that the bench now consists of Joaquin Arias and whichever catcher isn't starting, so I wouldn't be surprised if, after tonight's Derek Holland start, a pitcher gets sent down so that Brandon Boggs can come back up.

I think it goes without saying that Cruz's bat and glove have both been huge for the Rangers this year, and the team can't afford to have him out for long.

He’s also hitting .333 with 3 bombs in his last 10 games, fwiw. Hopefully he can put that shoulder issue behind him and give this offense the boost it’s begging for.

If he's finally healthy again, he needs to be called up.

Period.

He does too many things well to stash him away in AAA while Arias clogs the 25-man and the bench is short as it is. If his power is back, all he needs to do is focus on making good contact, which he has struggled with in The Show. Everyone knows about his batting eye.

Arias made a contribution or two

He’s kept a bat clean and fresh, unbroken, with no ball scars on it. And turned easy plays into either game changing or chance shriking screwups. And even spent some time yakking back to Andrus, with the revered Omar Vizquel between them on the bench.

Arias needs to be deported and a visa hold guy or two released to the minors.

Interesting question

Overall, his season this year (.263/.329/.368, 84 OPS+) looks a lot like a typical Ozzie Smith (career .262/.337/.328, 87 OPS+) or Omar Vizquel (career .273/.338/.355, 83 OPS+) season. The stolen base numbers are similar (Smith averaged 37 per 162 games with a high of 57 twice; Vizquel 23/162 and above 40 twice). Elvis likely already has more power than Smith ever did. The defensive numbers relative to league are all pretty close to both Smith and Vizquel.

Renteria’s got a career .288/.346/.402 line for a 95 OPS+. Like Elvis, he debuted at age 20, although it wasn’t until his age 23/24 seasons when he finally started showing more than just rare power.

Then you’ve got guys like Campaneris, Aparicio, and Appling, all of whom are similar in certain aspects, but nothing as a whole. (These names weren’t random; they’re the top comps of Smith and Vizquel.)

So, for the PECOTA comps, you’re probably looking at Smith, Vizquel, and a potpourri of defense-first shortstops from the past 50 years. But that’s just me guessing.

by Outworlder47 on Aug 4, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Ozzie played on turf

I’m guessing that had something to do with his SBs. Course that could also make his D that much more impressive. But I agree. Aparicio is beyond my time but I think Ozzie and maybe Omar are good comps.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

I think Andrus bat will be FAR more productive than those two

I’d say more like Roberto Alomar (.266 .328 .382 his rookie season at the same age as Andrus),

than either Vizquel (who only beat Andrus current OPS+ number once in his age 22-28 seasons) or Ozzie (also only beat an 84 OPS+ once in his 23-28 seasons).

I think those models will look at a pool of players

that debuted at 19-21 and held their own, and that is a pretty small group of comparables. My guess is that you’ll see a name or two that will be pretty impressive.

Renteria had an incredible rookie year, and his second season was very comparable to what Andrus has done. Renteria at his peak posted consecutive seasons of 130 and 113 OPS+, winning gold gloves both years. His peak was pretty short, but I hadn’t realized just how good he was at age 27-28.

I don’t think that they have to keep anyone past six years, but I don’t know how things will change for them once their new stadium is built or on what timetable. It would take a ton, and the point at which I’d be interested in Texas doing something like that is when Holland/Feliz/Perez aren’t their tradeable arms, but more like Purke/Font/Scheppers, so I kind of doubt that timeframe matches. I was just throwing it out there because he does have some of the elements of a potential target: a) it’s possible that his team would need to move him as he approaches FA, b) they have Nolasco, Volstad and the lefties, and c) he couldn’t veto. There are some other fits.

good points

I’ve had similar thoughts on Johnson as a potential target.

I’ve heard it one time in my life other than on here – a Pink Floyd boot from 1977.

lol at the sox announcers so mad about the benches being mad

wasn’t it the same announcers that got all mad about something similar vs the rangers and quotes shortly after the came pretty much confirmed their guy was throwing at someone?

something like that.. can’t remember it well obviously.

the preceding post was a great success.

kind of is

A 2 and 2/3 outing hurts the sox bullpen for all 3 games of the series now and lackey has been pitching well.

Ooh, if you jailbreak the iphone/touch you can run mlb gameday audio streams (or any other program)

in the backgorund while you do other stuff.. don’t have to leave the mlb program up. sweet.

the preceding post was a great success.

Hmm

I haven’t jailbroken mine since the 3.0 came out…might have to do that…
