Evan Grant on Joaquin Arias
Evan Grant has a story up on Joaquin Arias over at Inside Corner, and how he's gone from a prize part of the Alex Rodriguez deal to an afterthought.
I'm not entirely sure what role Arias could possibly have going forward on this team. He can't really throw well enough to play shortstop or third in the majors regularly, and has never hit well in the minors. And he turns 25 in September and is out of options after this season.
Ron Washington having him hit leadoff is really bizarre.

They shoul dhave brought up
Esteban German instead of Arias. German is a true utility player with ML experience. JD blew this one.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
JD was saying that German could play a role down the stretch for us
They probably just brought Arias up because he was already on the 40 man roster, but they really should have just DFA’d him and brought up German who at least has a shot to hit something.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Especially now that we truly know how much Arias sucks at the plate and on the field
There wouldn’t be any Monday-morning quarterbacking now if Arias is given his “Joaquin” papers. (Walking, get it?)
I got it the first time .. but still funny.

Just a guess
I’m thinking they went with Arias since he was already on the 40 and basically this is his last audition before they decide whether or not they should cut ties. I doubt he’s a Ranger much longer.
Esteban German
Probably the best lineup change available among AA, AAA, and the ML bench is German. At least until Kinsler’s back.

Problem is
Once Kinsler is back you’d have to keep him up or lose him to FA. I think we will wait until September to call him up

Why not just give him Arias’ 40 spot, and option him when Kinsler comes back?

Pretty sure he's a Minor League FA (He IS 31 after all).
So, you can’t option him down. You have to DFA him (or something similar) and hope he doesn’t choose to sign with another org.

He's looked fairly
craptastic so far. Even putting away his lack of offense, which was a given, I can’t imagine keeping him over some waiver wire utility infielder next year. We will probably be able to find a NRI who defends better than he does.

While Arias definitely doesn't have a role on this team going forward
I don’t think it’s anything to get upset about. It’s not like he’s losing games for the team or anything. It’s not something that’s even worth complaining about.
I can’t wait until Davs/Smoak/Borbon so we can see less Blalock/Byrd/Jones.

Yes he is costing them games. That grounder in the ninth Monday should have been an out and the play yesterday with the bases loaded cost them runs. That one didn’t end up mattering but it could have.

yeah it was...
It was slowly hit, and he didn’t take ANY sort of angle to get to it. He took it 3 ft onto the OF grass, which led to the bad hop, when even the smallest of angles to come in on it would have (a) gotten him to it on his terms and (b) given him more time to throw it.
Staying back on a slow roller like that doesn’t even play well in a beer league.

i disagree...i just think it was defensive positioning
would vizquel have made it? Maybe, but if you’re holding a player like Arias to the standards of one of the best defensive players ever, I think that’s unfair expectations.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
Its not positioning
He chose not to move and let the grounder come to him. He should have charged the ball and he can make the out without much of an issue.

Seriously gagreed...
How anyone could see that play and think it takes “one of the best defensive players ever” to make it defies understanding.
Even if the hop hadn’t eaten him up, that was going to be a bang-bang play on JACK FREAKING CUST. If it was all about positioning, then virtually no one would ever get thrown out using that alignment.

It looked like...
…a very lazy effort from Arias on that play. Positioning played a factor but he could have easily overcome that with a little hustle charging that ball.
I have no objection to man walking on the moon.
I don't think it was lazy...
I just think he’s lost at 2B. He doesn’t seem to have any feel for how to play anything.

I would say that with as poorly as this team is hitting, it doesn't matter too much.
There can’t possibly be an easier team to pitch to in baseball.
With all of the other easy outs on this team,
it sucks having the easist out batting lead off. Elvis and Murphy should platoon in the lead-off spot until further notice. The fact that our offense sucks right now is no excuse to make it suck worse.

Arias
I’m not sure he can throw well enough to play second, much less short or third.
Officially gay for Neftali Feliz
The play Cruz got hurt on ...
it was awfully close to a situation where the game is on the line and Arias is in short RF and cocking that cannon of an arm of his for the relay throw home with the game on the line.
Didn't he make the relay throw after the Holland pickoff error?
Seems like I recall him hauling off and throwing about a 100ft noodle.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

But I think Wash is simply (simplistically??) keeping the lienup the same as it would be with Ian in there. He seems VERY interested in keeping guys in roles. Notice that Omar also hit leadoff.

semi-related note, anyone else laugh at Wash’s quote about sticking with kins at leadoff?
Funny that this time last year (when Ian had a good OBP) he was complaining that he wanted to move Kins down, to take adantage of his power. This year, Kins’ OBP sucks, and he’s all behind keeping him in the one spot.

Which means if we brought him up now
Whenever Kinsler got back either we would have to keep him on the roster (2 UIF?) or DFA him which would mean he could become a FA. If you wait until September to add him the rosters have expanded to 40 so you can keep him up even if he doesn’t get much playing time.

I think right now we’re seeing the last hurrah of Jack Arias. When Ian comes off the DL, I fully expect him to go down and not return.
Anyone besides me wondering if the Yankees didn’t hoodwink us? In hindsight, that whole charade of hiding Arias in another uniform number seems like it could have been an attempt to keep us focused on him instead of Cano.

I’m also glad Ajayem posted this, because now I have another soapbox to ask why not DFA Arias, bring up Vallejo, and add Pirate to the 40?
I mean, mebbe the FO believes in Jack as a SS or emergency 3B, and that Vallejo’s only a 2B- but otherwise, I can’t see that Arias gives you anything so much better than vallejo (or Stevie Kraut) would give you right now.

In no particular order..
1) Until this callup, Jack had hit OK (.300+ last year, IIRC) in the Show. Vallejo is shitting the bed in OKC right now. This Thing can’t afford for the GM to screw the pooch by bringing up someone who’s “clearly not ready.”
2) Why add AJ to the 40 unless you’re calling him up? You don’t hand out 40 spots mid-season without a valid need. Even Johnny Donuts knows this, or at least Nolan can tell him over bedtime stories.
3) Right now there are no other viable options for the utility role, so they are probably going to rock with Arias until Kinsler comes back. Too bad JD was too busy making apuddle in his office to get in on the Wilson trade.

Oh, I know it won't get off the ground
Maybe it’s just a private swap-Eddie-for-AJ obsession I have. I know that won’t happen, so I have to aggregate it to dumping Arias (which is a nice side bennie in and of itself).
Plus, I don’t see how Vallejo makes this thing any weaker, and maybe he catches someone’s eye while he’s up for a winter trade. The dude has value, but since he can’t/won’t play short or third, there’s not much value here as a backup second baseman.

I'm in no hurry to lose Vallejo
His value will hopefully improve as he masters AAA (here’s that hope word again), and maybe we get knocked out with an offer for Kinsler one day in the future.

He has two more full years of options so why the rush to get rid of him? His value couldn’t be lower right now with his abysmal year hes having. Next yar he will be our only viable utility candidate already on the 40 man roster in the minors so if someone gets hurt he will get some action.

Per Heyman today
Jon Heyman of SI.com calls Toronto’s team the “Blew Jays” because he believes GM J.P. Ricciardi blew the Roy Halladay trade talks. Here are the details and a couple other rumors:
•Heyman says too much talk, too much candor and an overly steep price prevented Ricciardi from making a deal.
•Heyman hears that Halladay would have approved trades to a variety of teams in the East and Midwest.
•The Jays never agreed on prospects with the Rangers, but would have sent $5MM to Texas in a possible Halladay deal.
•One executive says the Jays “overplayed their hand.”
So the BJ’s were going to send the Rangers $5MM. If so JD called Ricciardi’s bluff on prospects. Ricciardi probably thought JD would cave. Good for JD if this is true.

And what prospects, exactly, could JP have gotten in a deal? Nobody has said anything concrete. The 2011 draft is shaping up to be quite good. I believe it is podcast #3 in which Law and his friend talk about the quality of players eligible for the draft in ’11.

I don't think it's a slam-dunk that he gets less this winter
I know its the conventional wisdom, but it not a lock IMO.
Once the season is over, contending teams could be more willing to part with ML-ready or ML players in a deal, as the opportunity for them to backfill is less time-critical.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
I think that he has to consider if he could get a better offer.
Cliff Lee had an effect on the market, but so did CC Sabathia from last year and probably Tex. But realistically, if something like Feliz + Smoak + Kiker + Borbon/Teagraden was on the table, how much better of a deal can you get than that? Feliz + Smoak are two top 15 prospects. The only way to get better than that is by asking for young major leaguers (not major league ready), but chances are if Toronto wants them, they’re already contributing something to that team. It just makes it more difficult.
I’m happy the trade didn’t go down because I don’t think the Rangers are quite there this year, but what sort of offer exactly does get that trade done? 2 MLB position players + 1MLB-ready excellent reliever/great SP prospect + 1 AA top-10 (for that team) prospect is a shit ton of talent. If you want to say, well Tex netted us so much, why shouldn’t Toronto get that, realize that we took back high ceiling players who were farther away. None of the players we took on would have the impact of Feliz + Smoak would one year from the trade.
I guess it all depends
whether and what they get for him in the offseason or next trade deadline.
