Fun times at the Coliseum

So does everyone remember when the fans were distracted at last nights game and Tom was mocking the big fat guy?

Well I just found this while browsing deadspin that an old man was being nasty and beligerent and wouldnt stop even when a few officers told him not to. This led to the old man being tased. Soon after this another guy starts going off on them and 10 seconds later a foul ball comes into the picture.

Here's the story and video at deadspin: http://deadspin.com/5330747/tasers-and-foul-balls-make-for-an-eventful-night-in-oakland

the video quality on youtube though is much better and easier to see (though it may not be there for long) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EunVYJgR7U

Ugh

One of the comments on the Youtube link:

“I was sitting about 5 rows in front of him and he was actually a Texas fan and he kept yelling obnoxiously. The usher who had been very nice went over and made a joke. And dude flipped out screaming and swearing saying get outta my fing face and calling him the n word. They called security and he was still screaming and swearing. So the police came and while they were trying to put handcuffs on him he kept trying to swing at them. So they tasered him and he fell and hit his head.”

This was funny. Now it’s just embarrassing.

So, if one youtube commenter said it, that must be how it went down?

Come on.

I watched the video. Saw zero swings by the septagenarian, other than when the cop smacked his juvenile nose phiddledeedew away.

Looked more like a case of a drunken, belligerent old man getting abused by a narrow-assed idiot of a cop. There were 4 cops, plus 4 or 5 ushers. How can they not have the leadership and poise to settle the situation without violence? The entire incident lasted less than 3 minutes before the cop struck, and when he tazed him he was sitting down. Arms down. With his back to the officer.

Pretty lame on both sides.

I see no real reason for said random Youtuber to be lying about it.

It does seem like the tazing was unneccesary

It doesn’t look like the guy is about to do anything terrible. Overreaction by impatient, short-tempered cops.

Cops in Oakland - give them the benefit of the doubt

Oakland is the asshole of California. There’s a reason the A’s are wearing ‘OPD’ patches on their uniforms, as 4 officers were killed in the line of duty by a wanted parolee.

Wanted parolees make up half the population of Oakland.

Not to say any police brutality is acceptable, but just do what the freakin’ cops ask you to do, especially if you’re in Oakland.

I may be a dick:

but how did that guy look threatening to you? He is a fat, unarmed, old man who was sitting in a chair surrounded by 3 policeman.

Also, I doubt that 1/2 of Oakland is made of any sort of criminals, much less those that the police are actually seeking.

Lastly, Oakland is much closer to the hypothetical ‘armpit’ than it is the ‘asshole’.

From watching the video, I think the force used by the police was absolutely ridiculous and they should be fired for it. I don’t care what he was saying or doing, there were better ways to handle a fat, defenseless man sitting down in a chair. Fucking idiots.

if they’re just going to taze you if you don’t immediately kowtow.

Uh, no.

Cop asks me to do something that he has no right to ask, I decline. If he tries to then force me to do it by force, I’ll get him suspended. Cops suck, just like the ones in the video.

by FuturePants on Aug 6, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, to be fair

we have no idea what was being said by that guy, or by the cops. It certainly does look like they overreacted, but we’re making a lot of assumptions here. And it’s stupid to just say “cops suck”. That’s allowing a few bad cops to give all of them a bad name, and I know a few cops that most certainly do not suck.

Have fun getting tased then

The cops in that video did nothing wrong in my eyes. This guy was apparently being beligerant and was drunk, they went over and tried calmly to remove the guy, brought their supervisor (or at least thats what it looked like) over and when the guy started resisting the officers attempts to remove him from the park he was tased.

The only thing I can question was the second tasing when he put the gun right up to him. Im sure a sober person wouldn’t have kept resisting but they should have had some leniancy IMO.

other than that I have no problem with that incident. And those officers will not, or should not at least, get suspended or any kind of reprimand for their actions.

not gonna turn out good for that tasing cop

this is getting play locally and it does not look good. that second tasing that took him down was completely unnecessary. not even fucking close. even took the other two cops by surprise. cops out here have zero accountability.

by SteveP on Aug 6, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

If he gets in trouble

it will be because of the second tase not the initial one. That was completely within his rights to do

Cops are there to remove

someone who is trespassing. He then tells the cops “You better get away” repeatedly.

It looks like the tazer wasnt working, cause if it was he wouldnt have stayed in his seat through the 1st round.

I know that hating cops is a fun thing, but in this case it looks like they handled it right. He was fighting back (not violently, but he was resisting)

The guy was a big dude who was probably intoxicated

So I can see how the first jolt didn’t send him to the ground. The second tasing was unnecessary and if that cop gets in trouble it will probably be for that not the initial one.

by bigsteve on Aug 7, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah good luck with that.

I’ve been down that road. It doesn’t work.

I asked for a badge number while being arrested for something I didn’t do. That’s all I did, ask for a badge number.

Cop: YOU WANT MY BADGE NUMBER?
Me: Yes I do, this is bullshit.

I ended up being pretty scraped up after the cop decided I was threatening him and tackled me to the pavement.
So I talked to a lawyer, and talked to the prosecutor when I had to go to court.

They both informed me I had a snowballs chance of getting anything accomplished.

I wonder if he was a Ranger relative

That is very close to the Rangers’ family section. How cool would it be if the fogey who got tased was Doug Mathis’ dad or something?

?

Because he’ll resist and possibly cause harm to himself and others if they don’t?

by oc on Aug 6, 2009 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Damn...

been to many games there growing up but never saw something like that. Usually it’s just jawing back and forth and a fight or two.

Not sure what he did before that video, but I’m not sure that he needed to be tazed. He didn’t look like he was threatening anyone. Just refusing to move. Probably should have just tried to carry him off first and if he continued to resist and fight back then they could have gone to the tazer.
