Minors - 08/06
Good night to keep an eye on the farm
Ross - 4/3/1/1/2/5. 7:0 GB:FB. Ridiculous. Threw a bunch of pitches in the 3rd/4th (including one marathon 14 pitch AB), so he was taken out a bit early. Mendonca went 1/3 with a 2B, HBP and 2 K's, so pretty much business as usual for him lately.
Wilmer - 5/7/2/2/2/4. 8:3 GB:FB. Hickory racked up 6 runs in the first...hooray for run support.
Ballard's getting slapped around by the fairly beastly looking Midland lineup; Chris Carter really needs to calm down. Moreland: 2-4, 3B, 2RBI.
Smoak - 1/3, 2B, BB, RBI. Davis - 1/4. Dana Eveland put up quite a unique line tonight: 8/11/9/9/2/8.

Moreland, 2 for 4 3B, 1B... now is hitting .330
in the 7th after getting his single, he got PR for, so hopefully he’s not hurt or anything. Of course, Frisco is getting smoked. I also wonderif he could get promoted to AAA seeing how Moreland is 23. He’s definitely hitting well enough to justify this. Of course, its fine if he just stays in AA to help Frisco out and the at bats in AA are pretty much as good as ABs in AAA.

Mitch
I don’t think he turns 23 for another month. I think they’ll stick him in AA for Frisco’s playoff run, there really isn’t space for him in OKC as is.

Mitch Huge Tracts of Land
turns 24 in Sept. I agree he probably stays in Frisco unless September callups make room for him.

Borbon being called up as long as he plays CF and leads off.

yea, me too
if he gets the call, with the way this offense has been, a guy like Borbon who at least puts in play and is gonna give himself a chance to get on base at least 1/3 of the tie would be a nice thing to have.

Gradoville catching for Frisco tonight
Nadel was speculating that Pina would be the catcher the Rangers would call up if Salty had to go on the DL.

I don't like to 40-man ramifacations of that.
Unless he’s already one of the guys we’ll need to protect in the winter. Is he?

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.

yea, he is eligible for the rule 5
who knows if he’d get taken, but he seems like the type who might be.j

Pina
Wouldnt surprise me, hes got good defense but not so good of a bat. I think the only other catcher on the 40 is max and hes all banged up.
So even if it wasnt pina and they needed to add a catcher a roster spot would have to be cleared

i know rankings don't matter
but it seems like the A’s have passed us in the rankings this season, with the graduation of holland and most likely feliz. we still have some gems in Smoak and Perez, but they just have so much depth after their recent round of selloffs. long term, i still like the rangers because i have to believe our offense will eventually gel and prove to be better than theirs, and the ultimate big league product is all that matters.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
by clark on Aug 6, 2009 9:09 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
definitely have
they added some guys, but alot of their guys will graduate as soon as next season… Cardenas, Carter, Wallace, just to name a few of their top guys will be graduates soon.

i haven't been following minor league ball as closely
as i usually do, but i would imagine the rays, marlins and indians are up there as well. Are we still a top five system?

eh, i dont know
i dont think so actually. But i love the chances of us looking at a top 5 rating at least by the end of next year. We have a ton of young guys who could really bust out onto the scene in AA over the next year.

I think
it depends on when Scheppers signs. If he does it at the August deadline, yeah, pretty easily actually.
If not, maybe. The A’s, remember, graduated Anderson, Cahill and Mazzaro in one fall swoop. I don’t think they have a prospect in their organization on the level of Feliz/Smoak/Perez right now. I like their depth, but their best prospects (Weeks, Carter, Wallace) are all 2nd tier types.
I think I said this before, but I think the team that removes us from the #1 perch will be the Marlins or the Red Sox. The Giants are in the conversation.

Not to mention Ynoa getting hurt for the year before throwing a single pitch.
The Indians are going to be pretty high up there too. They have tremendous depth after those trades.
by LiamP on Aug 6, 2009 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
completely blanked on the Indians. The breakouts from Chisenhall and their pitchers really help them too.
I think it’ll be some combination of Texas, Boston, Florida, Cleveland in the top 5 with a team like Oakland or San Fran or Tampa rounding it out.

i think the giants are hurt
by losing sandoval’s eligibility and trading that kid to pittsburgh. they were a top heavy system.

Bumgarner and Posey are As, Villalona B+, I'm thinking
And also I’d say that Thomas Neal made huge jumps into the B or B+ range.
Not sure after that.

The Giants have a lot of interesting prospects
Adrianza and Noonan, while they’re having sort of underwhelming seasons, are good middle infield prospects (which is a rare commodity). Lucas mentioned that there were two 16 year olds in the US as of last week, but their Rodriguez had turned 17 only a couple of weeks earlier and he is hitting .264/.376, a great sign for an immensely tooled prospect. They had Zack Wheeler fall in their laps in the draft. And they have several interesting C+/B- type arms, more than average.
I’m not sure that there is any one system that you can point to as a clear #1 at this point. Cleveland picked up a lot in trades, but their system was good not great prior to that.

long term, i actually think the A's are looking good offensively
they’ve had a couple guys look really good this year and adding Wallace certaintly helped, I honestly think that we’re gonna end up as the better pitching team though. Anderson is good for the A’s but Holland is just as good IMO, Cahill, on the other hand, I dont think he’ll be more than a 5th or 4th starter. With Feliz, Hunter and Feldman and all the other guys behind that right now, we are up to whatever they have right now. And further down the road, they might Inoa, but who knows, while we have probably the best 18 yr old pitching prospect in baseball, hopefully Purke and Font who are both possible TORGs and so many other possibilities.

I think
the A’s lack a top tier, holy cow type of offensive prospect, unless Carter’s transformation into a full time hitter is for real. Given his .400 BABIP so far this year, I doubt it.

true, i guess i just like the chances of them making something of Wallace and Cardenas
they both seem like the type of hitters i hate to play against, continually getting hits and getting on base because of that. They just seem to have enough of those solid types that some of them are gonna pan out into above average ML players, like Kurt Suzuki now… enough so that they make themselves into a slightly above average offensive team.

I can see that
but at the same time, that’s also going to be an awful defensive team.
If their future OF contains some combination of Cardenas-Green-Weeks-Wallace/Carter, that’s still a pretty awful unit all around. That combined with Mazzaro and Cahill’s ground ball tendencies, and it’s still a disparate group of guys.

like i said, i never really liked any of their pitchers outside of Anderson anyways, so their run prevention could be pretty bad.

hahaha
yea… I probably dont know enough about the A’s pitching to say that much about it, but to me it certaintly seems like we have a few more guys with the type of upside to legitimately be very good ML pitchers, not just marginal guys like said Simmons.

OKC face raping Dana Eveland
wish our offense knew how to do that… BB making more and more of a case to be used as the designated righty bat with a 2 for 2 night, Smoak got a double RH as well which is good news.

Ross, K's the side between two GB singles to SS, an walk, a SB and a throwing error in the 3rd
only allowed one questionable run… all outs either via K’s or GBs, Robbie’s style

and that was his final inning, his line: 4IP 3H 1ER, 2BB, 5Ks and 7 GO
well, that about what we’ve come to expect from Robbie. Im kind of curious if the Ranger’s even bother placing him in Hickory next year or just go ahead and bump him to High A.

Clark Murphy
2009
227 ABs
.580 OPS
Pretty psyched about this player coming into the year…

That doesn’t look so good in hindsight. Now I’ve latched on to some of the latin guys like Velázquez, Ortiz, Telis, and Alex Gonzales. Hopefully I’ll do better by them.

I remember looking at some clips of him and thinking “that guys swing needs a lot of work”. I figured it would be a few years before he figures it out, if he ever does.
