Rangers are calling up Julio Borbon

T.R. Sullivan says that Julio Borbon is traveling to Anaheim to meet the Rangers for tomorrow's game, and is expected to be activated, either in place of Nelson Cruz (who would be sent to the disabled list) or Doug Mathis.

Sullivan also says that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is dealing with a "dead arm," which resulted in him being pulled from today's game, and I suppose the Rangers would have to look at adding a catcher as well, if it looks like Salty could miss time.

looks more like it has Chuck Knoblauch/Steve Blass/Mark Wohler’s disease than it looks dead.

never really had good control (said without looking at stats) but that was because of his wild ass pitching motion.

I like Mitch Williams on MLB and he’s much more intelligent than I thought he would be.

Well, post all star

he doesn’t have many options for hot hitters. Cruz is hurt, so Young, who I think is hitting in the right slot for him, Andrus or Murphy (who should be leading off as a platoon in my opinion), or Andruw Jones.

Since everyone here throws a fucking cow when Andruw bats cleanup, I have no idea what Ron is supposed to do.

With Cruz hurt, Andruw is probably the best option for cleanup.

Which is more of a testament as to how bad this lineup actually is than anything.

No matter how bad it is though, there’s no excuse for hitting a slumping Marlon Byrd cleanup.

Aside from the injury... hit 217 in 300 at bats

Not that players havn’t done worse and gone on to become good players, but mediocre prospects have to take advantage of whatever time they get to stick around. The major league team isn’t designed to give his tier of prospect constant tryouts just to see if he will click. Not while still somewhat in a race anyway.

has some MLB experience, is older and knows how to get on-base + he plays defense very well.

If he’s hurt, he’s hurt – but if so, shut him down and get him ready for next year.

I didn't get why everyone was certain that

Boggs would be the one called up. Boggs walks a little more, and that’s about it offensively. Borbon figures to offer a bigger defensive bonus in CF and gives them an extra baserunner, which I’m sure the field staff overrates.

Isn't it more iffy

for Average to translate? If Borbon doesn’t hit 280 or so, he will be a below average OBP guy.

not when you walk alot and dont hit for alot of power

Borbon’s game is tailored towards getting the ball in play and running, that still plays at the ML level. His BABIP may drop some, but not a ton. Meanwhile, ML pitchers take away alot of the walks to a player who is patient but doesnt have a lot of power.

I haven't done an in depth study,

but my belief is most hitters see their averages drop significantly in their first few hundred ABs from the minor league to the majors.

Its why everyone says you have to be patient with minor leaguers.

Something else to ponder...

I came up with that list of 31 teams (there are probably a few more) that have come from 3 games behind or more on August 4 (or whatever day that was) and one of the teams that did it several times were the LA Dodgers.

For almost forever it seems, the LA Dodgers have been built on the foundation of pitching and sometimes defense.

Of Texas, LAA, Boston, Tampa, the Texas Rangers have the better starting pitching . At 2/3 thru the season, it’s no longer a fluke.

Of the four teams competing for those two spots on the post-season green, we have the best pitching.

If we had shitty pitching and were 5.5 games out on August 10, I could see why people would want to stick a fork in the team but we don’t and there are two avenues to make it.

Like it or not, we’re in this thing.

"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"

by Josey Wales on Aug 7, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Huh?

The Rangers do not have the better pitching than those teams. Would you really stack the Rangers rotation up against those teams? Boston has terrible defense, but the Angels are adequate there, and the Rays are as good or better than the Rangers and have better pitching to boot.

The Rangers might have better pitching than the Angels, especially in the bullpen. But the Rays and Red Sox rotations are better than TX.

I agree, though, that TX is still very much in the race, and if the offense wakes up they will remain so.

ERA is not a good individual stat

to evaluate a pitcher but when looking at a pitching staff collectively, it’s not bad.

Texas starting pitchers currently have a better ERA than LAA, Tampa & Boston.

Now, if the Angels and Red Sox sweep this week, I may go around to the dark side, but I don’t see much reason to concede it before then.

There’s a fair chance this team can get healthy and make a September run. If somehow we end up winning more games than the Angels or Red Sox, that’s fantastic. Stunning, really.

What good is being an optimist if you have no perspective of reality?

You’re the same guy who proposes bad trade deadline deals and think that this team was built to compete in 2009.

All you are trying to do is set false expectations so you can say the team failed because they didn’t make the playoffs.

when things don’t go the right way. If it was Sept. 7 and we were 4.5 back, I could see the negative vibes. However, it’s August 7, and the club is well positioned to make a playoff run. No negative vibes man. Leave that to the pros, like AJM. He gets the team wins with his negativity. :)

by Josey Wales on Aug 7, 2009 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

This is correct.

It’s one of the important points that they mentioned in Moneyball. There are very few incidences of walk rates changing between minors and majors (or throughout a career).

I think the point Z might have been trying to make is that if someone is struggling to make contact in AAA, they could have even more trouble in the majors.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 7, 2009 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Boggs is somewhat likely to hit .220 so that his walks merely make his obp "meh".

As he.. you know.. did so far. Hitting for a decent average at 26 in AAA doesn’t mean a whole lot. Botts style.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 6, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Boggs had 330 plate appearances last year so this is not going to be new to him at all.

Are you expecting a .350-.400 obp from Borbon the rest of the year in The Show? If not, there’s no reason for him to be here over Boggs.

Looks like you're applying the "play every day = success" theory that has proven so true with Blalock.

Absolutely carrying this team, especially in OBP post ASB.

You can figure out the OPS since July 1 but both of us know KKKKKKKKKKKKris Davis doesn’t come close and the decision to ship his drowning ass to OKC for the benefit of team chemistry was correct.

.235/.257/.408 for a rousing .685 OPS. Just fantastic!

So in other words

You’re expecting a guy with a .322 career OBP in the Majors to post at least a .350 OBP (which would make him one of the best on the team in OBP) just like that? You’re predicting then that he has nearly no drop off from the minors to the Majors despite his complete lack of power and bum shoulder.

On the other hand

if you don’t get prospects coming up from the minors, you don’t get those 6 years of control, which are crucial to an organizations success.

I think the Yankees did much better when Watson and Michaels were running them when they actually got young players like Jeter and Rivera coming up than they did trying to survive primarily on Free Agents.

Personally, I’d have loved to see what deals with the Indians would have cost the Rangers, but I guess we’ll never know.

In Joey’s post, he mentions that a Hamilton resurgence could be worth 10 runs, which would equate to 1 more win. Now that’s my quandary: how does that work? It would seem to me, based solely on common sense, that 10 randomly-placed runs over the remaining 55ish games HAS to be worth more than 1 win.

I understand that total runs for the year divided by wins yields roughly 10 runs per win, but it just doesn’t seem logical.

Correct

Also, when I say that hitting .270/.340/.450 would equate to a one-win improvement the rest of the way, understand that I’m speaking relative to his current .229/.280/.381 batting line — that is, we wouldn’t assume any improvement or regression if he were to continue hitting .229/.280/.381 the rest of the way. His current seasonal batting line is the baseline.

Additionally, 10 runs doesn’t always equal exactly one win due to differing run environments, but it’s generally going to be very, very close.
