Looking Ahead to the Offseason...
Despite our still being in it, I have been conditioned over my years as a Rangers fan to start thinking about the upcoming offseason by this time of year (and honestly, usually well before this time). One of the weirdest things about this season, beyond truly caring about the outcomes of games in August, has been how hard it has been to identify specific areas to upgrade on this team, both for this year and going forward. This is mostly because the rotation has been the default setting for that category for so long.
At the trade deadline this year, outside of an obvious candidate like Roy Halladay, any other target would have felt like a small and insignificant upgrade at any one position, despite the obvious problems this team has had offensively, and that sort of extends into this offseason. For example, despite the likely loss of Andruw Jones and Marlon Byrd, does this team really need to go after an OF with Cruz, Hamilton, Murphy, Borbon and Boggs hanging around? Does the team want to invest in a DH long term with Davis, Smoak, Max Ram and Moreland all still hanging around? An ace would be nice, but with rotation depth next year potentially including Millwood, Feldman, Hunter, Holland, Feliz, Harrison, McCarthy, and Hurley, you’d really need to target quality over quantity. But if they do decide to shop from the top shelf this offseason, they picked a poor time to start drafting in the back half of the first round.
I have included a toolbag of links from the luminiferous aether to hopefully help stimulate some conversation on what our 40 should look like and which FA or trade targets we should pursue.
We have some major contracts coming off the books (Padilla at 12m, Blalock at 6m, Benoit at 3.5m, Byrd at 3m, and Guardardo at 1m would equal 25.5, less the 1m that adds onto Millwood’s salary next year and the arb cases). Is this enough to make a run at a guy like Lackey? Could we also afford to bring in a guy like Abreu on a one year deal? I think they are both currently projected as type B free agents, although both are on the fringe between B and A. The obvious added bonus in signing either player is the damage it does to the Angels, while also addressing our greatest needs (legit TORP and OBP minded DH).

He was good here
but he basically quit the second half of the season last year because he had a couple nagging injuries and he didn’t want his numbers to go down so that he could get a big contract. Let the Cubs have him.

I don't see the Rangers being...
very active this offseason.
They will probably go after Sheets if he shows he’s healthy enough. Maybe a couple veteran filler types that will be cheap like they did with Vizquel and Jones. Abreu would be a great guy to go after depending on the cost. Stay the hell away from Lackey though imo. They will probably need a utility IFer, not sure if Omar would be willing to come back and play that role for another season.
Again the catching situation could be interesting with Salty, TT, MaxRam, and Pina has to be added to the 40 or he could be lost.
The ownership situation will be interesting to follow as well. Just not sure the Rangers are going to be willing to spend a lot of money in the offseason.

those are guys you can't count on, but are worth the rist
since when they pitch, they are lights out.
I’d rather go for Harden. Bedard may have surgery on his shoulder soon, so who knows whats gonna happen there.
We still have the option to go after Sheets. We don’t lose a draft pick there, but I figure he will be a hot commodity this offseason. What would be nice is if we signed sheets as this season winds down, and don’t wait for the offseason.

Yeah, you should be able to get him with a base contract around $6 million which go up to around $10 with incentives
There is a very good chance that the Mariners will not offer him Arbitration, saving you a pick as well.
If the club is feeling frisky, they might be able to sign 2 of the Bedard/Harden/Sheets triumvirate with the money Muddy Puddy frees up – without giving up any picks

i know you can never have too much pitching
but this sort of feeds into what i said in the OP. It isn’t a matter of quantity for this team any more. I feel pretty confident this team can field a rotation that stacks up with any other team in slots 2-5. What is missing at this point, honestly, is the ace. That said, we don’t have “ace” payroll availability here, so we may have to take our chances, as we have done for the past 3-4 years, with a guy whose raw ability excedes his dollar sign because of injuries or other issues.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
by clark on Aug 7, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right
Hollandaise and Feliz should get there in quality eventually, but not immediately. After that, we have a bunch of 3-5 guys: Hunter, Feldman, Willmood, Nippert, Moscoso, The Zombie brothers of BMac and Hurley. Each one of those are ML-level pitchers if healthy, so there is depth.
Meanwhile, before the next wave of prospects comes up and Feliz/Holland establish themselves, it’s a good idea to set aside about $10 miilion/yr in the portable ace fund to sign people like Bedard until we are able to get a true ace through trade. If it doesn’t work, just imagine that we donated that money to feed starving children in Africa.

I think I'd rather have Sheets
than Bedard or Harden at this point, unless he is just totally done. I know there isn’t much evidence for this, but I have a feeling he is basically a Ranger next year. JD is really good about keeping things under wraps. I also think we already have a deal in place with Purke, for what its worth.

What if our staff next year was:
Webb
Harden
Bedard
Sheets
Holland
And we just promised all the Hunters/McCarthy’s/etc that they would be up soon enough. That couldn’t cost more than 25M guaranteed. If we can sit Milly’s option doesn’t vest, this is my solution (but not really at all).
Would be fun, though

one guy who mildly interests me
is Brad Penny. His stats this year aren’t too good on the surface, but his FIP is respectable and he’s a groundball pitcher playing in front of the worst defense in baseball and pitching in the best offensive division in baseball. Coming to a much improved defense and pitching in a weaker offensive division, I could see him becoming an inning eating middle of the rotation guy again. Of course, he’s a “coast” guy who will probably want to move back to the NL, so this is a long shot.

Another position player option
could be a trade for David DeJesus. He had a down year offensively while playing in the hell that is KC, but he is usually a solid bat and one of the best defensive OFs in the league. Any OF with DeJesus and Cruz would be a huge asset, with Borbon potentially playing CF and Hamilton rotating with DeJesus and Cruz for the DH spot to give them all periodic rests.
I wonder if KC would trade him for David Murphy straight up (who is the cheaper player and controlled for a longer period), or perhaps for Murphy and someone like Kirkman or one of the other fringe 40 guys we have.

me either, at least not for DeJesus
Murphy will be 28 next season and DD will be 30 and considerably more expensive.
And Murphy has a .818 career OPS, guess how many times DeJesus has bested that in his six full ML seasons?
Zero.

after looking at Dejesus's numbers
I had pegged him as a better OBP guy, and he’s not. I still love what he brings defensively, and after watching how much of a difference defense can make to a pitching staff this year, I am completely sold on building a strong defensive team.
Speaking of the Royals, is it time to think about using our minor league depth to try to pluck away someone like Soria? He’s cheap through 2014, so he won’t come cheap in a trade, but a bullpen with Frankie, Wilson and Soria is a thing of beauty.

Sheets vs Harden
If Rich Harden will accept a one or two year deal he is the guy I would rather have. But if he won’t then I say go 1 year 4 mil with incentives that could bump it up to 9 mil for Sheets with a team option that fully vests at 180 innings and partially vests at 120 innings. Fully vesting option would be for 12 million and a partially vested option would be for 6 mil with incentives that could bump it to 12 mil.

Harden
So frail that he can’t throw the slider anymore, limiting him to the FB/CH (although they are tremendous pitches). Increased FIP/tRA, increased FB%, huge jump in HRs (20 already this year) and he’s coming from the junior league.
I would pass.

that's not a bad guess
he is a guy we’ve wanted in the past, and he’d be an ideal DH to mitigate the injury risk. He’s only a year removed from a very solid offensive year. I actually really like this suggestion.
