Pirates give 1M to 8th rounder
I think this is significant because of when it was done. Why didn't the Pirates just announce this a couple of hours before the deadline? Selig must be furious that the Pirates did this 8 days before the deadline.
if the Pirates don't get in trouble for this, when will a team ever get in trouble?

I also wonder
does this hurt the chances of the Pirates signing picks 1-7? I’m sure the agent will now say, "Hey, you had enough to give an 8th rounder 1M, what about my guy who went higher?).

agents know
that players are from different tiers. if the guy in the 7th round is just a decent collegiate guy, he probably shouldn’t bother asking for 1m and pointing fingers.

Doesn't Selig have to approve over slot deals?
If so then he knew about this ahead of time
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I don't understand why Selig
didn’t say no and tell them to announce it a couple of hours before the deadline.

Supposedly he's been doing just that
a couple times this year already

Selig
I don’t think he has to approve the signings since there is not official slotting system. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t pressure the teams to not go over slot and threaten them if they do. That being said, I am glad when teams do what the Pirates did here and do what is best for their franchise, not what the most incompetent commissioner in any sport thinks is best for their franchise.
This is the second year in a row that the Pirates have gone way over slot to sign a UT recruit. Last year Robbie Grossman got something like $800K as a 9th or 10th rounder.

Who's this guy represented by?
Boras?

I don't think so
From what I remember he was seen as a second round talent by a lot of people, they just didn’t know if they could buy him out of his commitment to Texas. That is why he slipped as far as he did and why he signed for so much money.

Bud Selig
is there a bigger joke in baseball? The guy puts his buddy George Mitchell on a task force to find all the steroid abusers in baseball, and his report happens to leave out the two biggest names on the team Mitchell is affiliated with, the Red Sox. Besides the Wild Card, Selig is just a bumpkin who has been bad for this game.

Interleague play is kinda cool.
Sorta. I guess.
Maybe he’s just lucky to have been in the chair during a good period of baseball, but if you look at his term decision by decision, it’s all suck and fail.

am i the only one who thinks that interleague play is total crap?
id settle for a balanced schedule for teams in each league. top 4 teams make the playoffs. im sick of interleague, im sick of us having four teams in our D, and all the rest having 5. the yankees only having even one decent team in their division and all the rest terrible historically. its all so biased, so unbalanced and weighted for certain clubs. its disgusting.
I can't help it. I’m an asshole.

ummmm...wtf?
you do realize that us having only 4 teams is awesome right….that means we compete against only 3 other teams for a playoff spot rather than at least 5 like other teams…
if there is something to complain about it is that we get screwed by playing in the West

AL East
For a number of years they’ve generally had three competitive teams: NYY, BOS, TOR. Now the drays have added themselves to the mix. You have to be good to win that division. If you were to take Toronto and put them in the Central I think they’d look pretty good.
I don’t mind interleague, but it’s more or less an exhibition that counts as far as I’m concerned. Gives you a chance to see some teams you’d never see otherwise. If you lived in one of the huge markets like Chicago you’d get to see both teams play each other in games that matter. That’s cool. Though I would like to see them play by NL rules in AL parks and by AL rules in NL parks. Have always been in favor of that.
I agree with horns that there’s no fucking way the Rangers belong in the AL West, two time zones away from everyone else they play in an unbalanced schedule. I’m not sure how much it fucks with the players but it sure fucks with the fans. Because of all the late night TV games you’d think it puts an unnecessary limit on ad revenue. They should be in a Central division. Don’t care whether it’s the NL or AL.
But the Rangers did benefit from the four-team AL West in the late nineties. This year there’s no real benefit to it because the top three teams are all pretty good, and without looking at the standings before the Rangers turned themselves around it seemed like SEA, LAA, and OAK were usually all pretty good in this decade. But if you’re in a five team division a couple of them are always going to suck. Unless there’s a weird bout of parity it’s almost inevitable.

i don't think mitchell
had access to the positive tests from the trial program in 03. if selig wanted to do something nefarious with the steroids commission, wouldn’t he have appointed a brewer’s homer to head it?

Even if he didn't have access to the 2003 names
You would think if he dug around the Red Sox long enough he could have found out about Manny and Ortiz. As with any investigation, the investigator finds what he wants to find.

This is a very well executed post.
Lots of information, nice links, aces up, hoes down, poetry on the weekend, goblets of pubic hair… and all those sorts of things.

i think its funny
that the one link he bothered to make was just to the pirates homepage on here.

Or maybe it's because I typed the word Pirates
and it put the link automatically.
As for link, just believe me, why would I lie?

it's not that you'd lie
but if you are going to make a fanpost, especially one that provides very little to no information in the first place, it’d be helpful to link to the source.

http://www.buccofans.com/2009/08/pirates-to-sign-colton-cain.html
This is especially newsworthy because:
- the eighth-rounder is Waxahachie’s own Colton Cain. Cain went to the College World Series this year with UT as a hard throwing righty. He’s 6’3, 225 and has a really gay name
Cain was ranked 109 by Baseball America… He throws in the low 90s, touches 94. He posted a 2.17 ERA and a 118:18 K/BB ratio in 58 IP this year… He has committed to Texas as a two way player. He is also a power hitting first baseman.
- Cain is to receive a seven-figure signing bonus. Only one other player has received that kind of money after the seventh round. The signing is set to put the Pirates ahead of all other clubs in total spending on the first 10 rounds
- Cain follows behind seventh-rounder Trent Stevenson of Arizona and sixth rounder Zack Von Rosenberg (hello ZVR, good-bye JVB) as the latest to sign with Pittsburgh. Stevenson and Cain are highly regarded with scouts and could move fast in Pittsburgh’s system
- Pittsburgh’s farm is getting wicked deep

don’t see how the two effect each other- it’s not like all the guys in round 8 are going to get a million dollars. Dude just argued- successfully- that he should have been a first rounder, so he got first round money.
