I don't know why

I never put together the John Candy character in PTA and Home Alone + John Hughes connection until now.

Crazy, man.

I thought Home Alone and Christmas Vacation were loved by everyone!

Christmas is alright

But not liking the original Vacation? That’s just bad taste, man.

by brettgardner on Aug 7, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Vegas was better

Christmas was a DISTANT third.

Wait a second...

Are you saying that Vegas was better than the original?

My eyes are bleeding.

I THINK

He was saying that Original > Vegas > Christmas.

I really liked the original, but could leave any of the sequels.

No, no

It goes “Original, Vegas, Christmas, death by fire, death by stoning, European”

In that case, I agree completely.

Didn't direct either

LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1

by vfn on Aug 7, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

He's as well-known

For his writing as his directing.

by brettgardner on Aug 7, 2009 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I know he wrote a lot of stuff that he never did...

But personally, I don’t associate something with a director unless they actually directed it.

by vfn on Aug 7, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

I don’t really think of Vacation as a “John Hughes movie.”

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 7, 2009 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Sort of like...

…I don’t consider Midnight Express or Scarface to be Oliver Stone movies.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 7, 2009 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Related to Stone...

or Natural Born Killers to be a Tarantino.

by vfn on Aug 7, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Or True Romance

Scott may have directed, but that movie is soo Tarantino.

It just does

In the alternative, we could call “The Virgin” episode of Seinfeld a Farrelly Brothers TV show instead of a Jerry Seinfeld/Larry David TV show, Raiders of the Lost Ark a Lawrence Kasdan movie instead of a Steven Spielberg movie, and Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Kasdan movies instead of George Lucas movies.

It makes more sense to refer to a “John Hughes movie” as one where he’s the auteur behind the film, rather than one where he was the screenwriter but wasn’t the visionary behind it.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 7, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No it doesn't

Because he’s just as well-known for his writing, as I said before. In any case, with “Home Alone”, for instance, I would imagine that as writer and producer, he had a hell of a lot more to do with the vision of the film than Chris Columbus.

He was a writer who sometimes directed his own stuff. Those other guys you mentioned were either doing larks or were stooges.

by brettgardner on Aug 7, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Kasdan is analogous

He wrote those scripts before he really got big, much like Hughes.

Vacation came out before Hughes ever directed or produced anything. I would call “Home Alone” a Hughes film because it was his baby, even picking one of his proteges to direct it.

Personally, I much prefer the rental car counter scene for outright hilarity..

Of course, one has to recognize the woman from her TV role to fully appreciate it..

Adam

Man, you are one jaded individual.

I was a pretty self-aware kid even in high school, and I loved every one of those John Hughes films, even the Molly Ringwald ones that were clearly geared to the high school girls.

And I know we’re pretty close to the same age…

Get Fuzzy is greatness, though. If I had a half-Lab/half-Sharpei, I would be Rob Wilco. I do have the Siamese cat.

I didn't hate Fargo

I just wasn’t that impressed. It was like a 6.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 7, 2009 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

You told me you "didn't care for it"

Which I would think would have you rating it lower than a 6.

However, you do acknowledge the epic greatness of Miller’s Crossing, which keeps you in my cool book (no need to profusely thank me).
