A couple of Inside Corner stories
A couple of Inside Corner stories for you to check out, if you haven't already...
Evan Grant has a story about Michael Young's red-hot streak in July, and how it reminds Marlon Byrd of Jim Thome putting the Phillies on his back and carrying them in 2003...
And Bob Sturm's intern has a good, analytical piece on the improvement of the Ranger defense.

Young
We all hoped he would rebound a bit with healthy fingers, but I never ever would have guessed this might be his career year. He’s still not a good glove, but it’s a surprise that his bat is more valuable than those of Longoria, Zimmerman, Jones and Rodriguez.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I was annoyed at first with his supposed fit over moving to 3B...
But I was firmly in the camp that last year wasn’t the start of some statistical slide and that he would rebound very well this year..
THIS well, nope – didn’t see it coming

So, depending on how Chris is doing in AAA at 3B
is he a candidate for DH down the road?

Davis, or Young?
Davis is definitely a candidate for DH down the road, given his defense at third. Young, I doubt it.

Young's defense at 3B
is pretty bad. Is Daivs even worse?

I doubt he could be worse
but Young isn’t going to be DHing anytime soon. The guy barely even wanted to move to another position in the IF.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I'm not sure about "worse" ~ from what I've seen, "equally bad" is what comes to mind.
Either or both could improve dramatically, I suppose, but I’m not holding my breath. And unless Davis’ defense at third improves dramatically at AAA, I can’t see the point of moving Young to DH ~ both for the reason Gdawg mentions, as well as because when Davis returns, I’d prefer to see him concentrate on his performance at the plate, without needing to try to adjust to playing the hot corner concurrently.

I think MY will improve his D next year...
I still beleive the conventional wisdom that his arm plays well there, and that playing 3B mitigates his weaknesses fairly well. Right now, the question is whether or not his instincts and reflexes will play well there. Quite frankly, he looks like me at 3B on balls to his left – stabs at everything with minimal footwork.

I think its already improved
He was annoying me every other night with bad plays a while back… the main thing i’ve noticed about him over the past 6 weeks is some nice throws heh. I think UZR has him as just slightly negative over the last couple months, much better than the 2x worse than the next lowest guy he was in april/may.
the preceding post was a great success.
Alex rios claimed on waivers,
Any chance we made a claim? I mean I doubt it cause of the money situation but he is an offensive upgrade.

I cannot imagine
the Rangers picking up that contract unless the Blue Jays take Padilla in return or something crazy like that.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
why would the rangers risk that?
the bluejays could just as easily let the claiming team take the player for nothing.

Huh?
I’m talking in silly speculation about a deal they work out. Your question is pointless and offbase.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
and for the record
there is zero, maybe even less than zero, chance that the Rangers are the claiming team.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
yeah, nice save
“unless the blue jays take padilla”
and I pointed out that the rangers can never work out a trade to take padilla. defensive fuck

Put AJ on the DL
and replace him with Rios? But you realize Ricciardi will want Holland for Rios. I am assuming Toronto pulls him back and wants to work out a trade.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
holland for rios?
what?

There was talk...
…that the Blue Jays wanted someone to take back Rios and his contract as part of a Halladay trade.
If someone claimed Rios, Ricciardi might just let them have him.
No way Texas made the claim.

given that
i think ricciardi might get some random player later.

i would say there is no chance we made the claim

for what?
Him being claimed?

one can only wish
to be as active as you, so we’d have time criticize other people for their inability to find a story that has not been published by Fox, MLB or many Blue Jays blogs… not all of us have madam Zelda like powers to guess the location of a story

Didn’t Ricciardi turn down Lincecum for Rios a couple of years ago?

I believe he did,
but was that ever confirmed as being on the table?

Question:
If a pitcher hits a batter, and then that guy comes around to score, its an earned run right?

Is it fair to assume
Bobs intern is a member here? Or at least a lurker? Seemed to make a lot of the points that have been made here but in a good way. I liked the way he argued for the importance of the defense.

A lot of people in a lot of places have been making the points TC did.
He came to the party late, but at least he didn’t bring a fern.

about BABIP
couldn’t one have a high BABIP because the balls that are getting hit off of him are getting hit hard? not just because of bad luck…
Bobby Jindal '12
Yes
But watching most of CJs appearances I can tell you hes gotten alot of really soft hits against
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I was
talking in general… using that stat as an indication of good or bad luck seems misguided to me…
I was also sort of referring to Derek Holland.
I LOVE THE RANGERS!!!
You can look at xBABIP
Which is the expected BABIP for a pitcher given his FB%, LD%, and GB%.
If the BABIP a pitcher has is higher than the xBABIP, he’s been generally unlucky.
You could argue that the ground balls have been hit harder than the average ground ball, but there’s not much else I can think of to argue against the simple comparison aside from good/bad defense.
Its definitely possible
If a pitcher is giving up a lot of line drives for instance, he’s much more likely to have a higher BABIP than someone getting a lot of flyballs. GB pitchers with poor IF defenses behind them are also going to probably end up with a high BABIP.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

harder GB's
they can only be so hard. I think you can correct for BABIP using LD% but that’s about it. I can’t really think of a pitcher that consistently gives up hard GB’s that always find holes.

Smoltz got DFA'd today.
I’m almost glad. God knows the Rangers would make Smoltz look like Smoltz circa 1997.
Padilla gone as well

Just saw that...
Wow.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
