Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

Stat of the Day

Number of times a 3-0 has been worked by each A.L. team:

  1. Yankees -- 254
  2. Boston -- 252
  3. Tampa Bay -- 241
  4. Minnesota -- 222
  5. Anaheim -- 215
  6. Toronto -- 211
  7. Baltimore -- 209
  8. Cleveland -- 206
  9. Chicago -- 200
  10. Kansas City -- 198
  11. Seattle -- 196
  12. Oakland -- 195
  13. Detroit -- 190
  14. Texas -- 175

It is almost kind of funny, how much of an outlier the Rangers are in every plate discipline category you can find.

i wonder how that 175 is distributed amongst the team

although I suppose I could venture a guess after watching this abortion of an offense all year long.

Smoltz

Got DFA’d, link in the fanshot I put up.

He looked bad, but… any interest whatsoever?
It seems kind of tempting to maybe slot him in the pen and have him as a SP reserve. For a while to see if he can get it back together anyway. In the last start his slider just wasn’t moving.. seems weird.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 7, 2009 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

although its possible he could just retire i guess.

And yes, obviously the lack of patience has been absurd. Blah.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 7, 2009 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Because our SP depth is awful?

I’m not saying they should just run out there and get him at any cost, but I’d want them to take a close look at what his problems have been thus far anyway and evaluate if its something he could get back at any moment.

Probably isn’t, plus noone knows the dynamics of if he didn’t want to go back to the pen or he himself thinks hes done now, but worth a glance anyway.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 7, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it is awful

You’ve got Nippert, Mathis and Moscoso as emergency options, McCarthy apparently back before too terribly long. I’d just as soon stick with Hunter and Holland in the rotation for now.

Really, the way he’s performed lately, I’d rather have Nippert than Smoltz in the rotation right now.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 7, 2009 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

McCarthy back as a starter?

The Rangers are only kidding themselves if they believe that. His starting days have to be done with Texas.

by Mark from OC on Aug 7, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

The Rangers said McCarthy isn't coming back until he is 100%

starter ready. Non of this coming back with a pitch count etc. He will probably have 1-2 bullpen games and then 5-6 starts before he sniffs the majors again. And he’ll probably only be called up if we’re in dire need or he’s got a 0.88 ERA after those starts.

100%, so 2012?

"BIg whoop, wanna fight about it?"

by lost in space on Aug 7, 2009 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah yeah. He has a craptastic track record with Rangers

but he could be someone we may call on if need be later on, especially if we make sure he’s had time to get in pitching shape. I wouldn’t call him an ace in the hole, but a 9 of hearts can win sometimes too.

by AceJC on Aug 7, 2009 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

why do you think nippert, mathis, and moscoso are better than smoltz?

I've read Smoltz interviewed after each game, and it seems like

he stays positive and questions why he is having such bad luck. At some point he has to realize it’s time to hang it up.

I don’t know how old Smoltz is, but I know he was on the Braves in 1991 so…probably time to retire.

by Black Francis on Aug 7, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

well he was pretty old in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 30 innings in 2008 pre-injury

and was pretty awesome in all of those years.

if hes done now its probably got a lot more to do with the injury than one more year of age.

I was kidding

I’ve always been a John Smoltz fan. The dude is good.

And he was very good in 2007 at age 40, but he’s 42 now and going on 43. Coming off a pretty bad injury. I just don’t think it’s really worth looking at.

by Black Francis on Aug 7, 2009 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Once again the question comes up whenever people suggest adding a pitcher

Who gets booted to make room for him?

If you bring him here out of the pen who gets bumped. Feliz is the only logical guy with options left. Frankie, CJ, and ODay are untouchable. You aren’t gonna get rid of Eddie for a righty.

SO that leaves Nippert and Jennings. Is Smoltz an upgrade over those guys? A few years ago he was but right now I don’t think he is.

Fangraphs on Smoltz

Basically pointed out that he was suffering from poor defense, and had a TRA* of 4.50 and an xFIP of just under 4.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/john-smoltz-and-era/

In short, it says that Smoltz has looked alot like normal Smoltz of this decade, just vulnerable to the doubles off of the Monster plus some really bad BABIP (.394!), and the opposite of Millwood’s luck on strand rate (57.6%).

Sounds like Smoltz isn’t and shouldn’t be done.

where this team ranks amongst all time teams in plate discipline. I suspect they are way out there on the edge.

Just doesn’t seem like we’re getting any younger. What can you do when the main piece doesn’t sign and every one else already has. So I understand the position, it just sucks.

maybe tomorrow's stat of the day

should be what our record was last year at this time.

or maybe the list of pitchers who had started for us at this point of the season for the past ten years.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Aug 7, 2009 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

a stat for 3-0 specifically

makes me think the AL East might just have some really bad pitchers, and in fact, they do.

This isn’t to pardon our own group of hackers, I just thought i’d share an observation.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Aug 7, 2009 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

The joke solution to this riddle

would be that the Rangers hitters are the only ones that didn’t get to face Ranger pitching, hence the lower number of 3-0 counts, but this year’s Ranger pitching makes it not as apropos.

Josh’s (hopefully incorrectly) paraphrased comment in Jeff Wilson’s mailbag today that he swings at the first strike he sees because he may not see another strike also speaks to the low 3-0 counts and is triply troubling because:
1. it’s a poor approach,
2. it appears to be an accurate description of what he’s actually been doing, and
3. it accurately describes most of the rest of the hitters this year.

by Longhorn on Aug 7, 2009 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

Actually, let's keep things in perspective a bit

Pathetic is too strong, since we’re middle-of-the-pack in the AL. But, it has been underachieving and isn’t built for consistent success

Runs, runs, runs...

It IS what it’s ultimately about.

I agree that next-to-last (KC is behind us) is pathetic, but is mitigated over the whole season by our SLG.. We have to get that OBP up to have a consistent winning offense though – no disagreement.

1st Pitch Swinging

I know I already had a lengthy fanpost up on this, but the Rangers swing at the first pitch 33% of the time. The league average is 26%, and the next closest teams are at 28%.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 7, 2009 5:03 PM CDT reply actions

I know it's silly suggesting this, but did the team switch eye-doctors this offseason?

New optometrist maybe?

I’ve noticed Kinsler squints a lot when he bats now. I had never noticed that before. Then again I might not have ever cared to notice before

by oc on Aug 7, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Even More Depressing

The Rangers swing at the most pitches (48%) and make the least amount of contact (75%).

by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 7, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Well geez, Adam, that's just the way they are.

They can’t get any better because it’s impossible to learn better plate discipline during the season, so we may as well all just grin and bear it the rest of the way.

Didn’t you get the memo?

by Athos on Aug 7, 2009 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

i think we should tell kinsler to take more pitches

i’m pretty sure nobody has done it yet. that will fix everything
