Vicente Padilla designated for assignment
The Rangers have designated Vicente Padilla for assignment.
Dustin Nippert is replacing him in the rotation, and Julio Borbon is replacing him on the 25 man roster.

Is this the white flag?
Or does this make the team better?
2009 Texas Rangers: Why The Hell Not Us?--ghtd36 on May 13, 2009
why would we wave the white flag going into a crucial series with the angels?
I think the whole team is behind getting rid of a guy who doesn’t give a crap about his teammates.

with the way he was devouring our bullpen
might as well start nippert, he’d get into the game regardless, anyways.

I don't see it as a white flag
The clubhouse didn’t like him and he was expensive. Since he wasn’t in the Rangers plans past this season, it seems like a no-brainer in hindsight.

5th inning against the Tigers
They threw up the white flag a week ago.
Making the playoffs terrify them. The prospects of winning, and the expectations that follow, are contrary to their “carrot” philosophy…unless you just arrived.
This is the season's catastrophic moment
I’m extremely disappointed.

are you joking?
It’s not like we just gave up a Cy Young candidate or anything. The guy is a headcase who could go out there and throw a 7 inning shut out, be hes more likely to go 4 innings, give up 6 runs, give the team no chance to win and deplete the bullpen.
Losing his “me” attitude and his 4.92 ERA is not a catastrophic thing.

I think
This has more to do with contending/not contending this year. From JD’s quote it sounds like he was a hinderence to the clubhouse. Padilla is very inconsistent, and it gives some of the guys who will be with us time to mature.
I’m all for it.
I wish
one thing management would consider is giving the ball to Feliz instead of Nippert.
Not yet.
We need that 100MPH RH Pitcher in our bullpen right now.

Starters are more valuable then relievers to start with, and we had the 3rd best bullpen ERA in the AL before Feliz was called up. The bullpen was fine.

Feliz's arm is not ready for starting pitcher innings.
You can’t rush him just for this season. He will be a centerpiece for years to come. They will have patience with him and not rush him.

can someone please provide some history
People always allude to Padilla being a headcase and being disliked by his teammates.
Can anyone provide specific reports or instances of this being the case? I know he throws at hitters a lot and that this has caused retailations and fights in the past. What else?
Teixeira bad mouthed him this year and said he hated him when they played together.

You are right that I dont have personal expierience with him to prove my thoughts
But the people who do know him, spend time with him, have said this, and his performance and mindset has not changed… The same issues also still exist around him, so I am inclined to think the drinking problem is also still there…
But, if we want to go this route, nothing anyone of us sais about a player is reasonable because we dont know them, we havent spent time with them, we arent Texas Rangers, so we shouldnt ever look at what the people say about him, those people who do know him, and should just sit back and not think or say anything…

Even if correct. Whether you know him or not, presume that some of the good and some of the bad about Vicente Padilla is exaggerated, or out of context, or both. He’ll sign on somewhere else. Too bad he is/was a disruption to the team.

Everyone is overlooking the morale aspect.
JD is getting run over the coals for not doing enough for his team by getting a big name before the trade deadline. This shows JD has their back, and gets rid of an obviously douchey guy out of the clubhouse. Looking at all those comments and the bruise on Face’s back, the team is glad he’s gone.
I would put money down that 95% of the clubhouse thinks this is a great move. The guy was warned by being put on waivers and still fucked up.
The players are going to move on and someone is going to step up and take his spot. That’s what a good team and good players do. They’re the Texas fucking Rangers and they’re going to do this thing.

Jeter
Varitek would have struck out looking on a 2-seamer.

On the 2nd pitch of the AB, no less.

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
umps across the league
start Varitek with one strike. It’s the baseball equivalent of taking Old Yeller out back

So
Millwood
Feldman
Hunter
Holland
Nippert
Yikes. Obviously it looks much better now than it did preseason, but still… there is quite the disaster potential in this rotation right now.
the preceding post was a great success.

Geez ...
Only one guy left from our initial 5 man rotation … although Feldman should have been there.
I'm sure
he’s back to AAA when Ian comes off the DL

Nelson
is not on the DL. Is there anyone we absolutely need to have up?

He's not on the d.l.
However, I suspect when he’s healthy, we’ll see Borbon go back down and a pitcher come up.

Is there really
any arm that we positively need to have up? I’d rather we stopped rolling with 3 man benches.

Is still weeks off best case and with a easily possible setback could be done for the year.

will mccarthy be up before mid sept, and be worth a damn?

he'd have to try pretty hard
to be as bad as Padilla

then it's still an upgrade
since Bmac is not a douche. Right now, I think it’s probably smarter to ride the hot hand of Nippert. I don’t think this costs us much.

Wow
you were only off by a week. Although in your defense, he probably would have returned to headhunting earlier if it wasn’t for H1N1.
I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.
WOW.
I know the guy’s a moron, but in the middle of a supposed pennant race… wow.
I’m impressed with the FO’s ballsyness again.

Works for me
But obviously I posted this in the wrong thread. Talking about a 4-0 lead in the 1st is much better than saying anything about the ex-Rangers pitcther though.
This just in...
The Dallas Cowboys have expressed interest in signing Padilla for the league minimum.
We're running low on "second chance" guys this year. We've got a quota to reach.
Plus, I think Jerry gets a hard-on whenever he hears that someone with disciplinary issues is available. He’s into the bad-boy types. Come to think of it, with that and the plastic surgery, he very well could secretly be a chick.
This unintentional comedy is just infinite. What a fitting denouement.

This was how it HAD to end for the Thrilla.
He is the example.

I don't mind saying it now.....
Padilla was actually fun to be around while doing “fun” things, which always involved drinking. He acted just like any other guy out having drinks with the guys.
However, the most I saw him was during this season, and laughingly during his time on the DL and during the swine flu period of time. All I can say is that Padilla loved to play some cards with the boys.
But it’s like any other person you may go out drinking/partying with. They’re fun to be around at those times, but you might not want to work with them, live with them, or be around them in any other activity.
No, I was just there….not going there with him.
I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.
I think Padilla would be pretty cool to hang out with.
Why or how did you end up hanging out with him?
"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin
Does he speak English?
I didn’t realize it until tonight, but I’ve never actually heard him speak. Not one word in an interview or anything. I don’t normally watch the pre/post game shows, but that still seems kind of weird.
This opens up a spot for BEN SHEETS!!!
hopefully…
