Another thing

Lackey threw a shit ton of pitches today. I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see him have a rocky next start

I don't think it's a big deal either way.

Sheets isn’t going to cost that much, having not pitched for a year and coming off of an injury. With Sheets, the rotation will be something like Sheets/Millwood/Feldman/Holland/Hunter with (hopefully) Feliz back as a starter in OKC and Harrison/McCarthy/Nippert/Moscoso ready in case of injuries.

Even if Sheets sucks, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the Rangers may be adequately covered. Sheets being effective for even half a season would be a massive bonus.

Send him to instructs or winter ball to give him more innings. Then, as long as he has a strong ST (I believe he will), he guarantees himself a spot in the rotation. The Rangers have had no problems with pushing their talent.

Longoria’ing him while we shiffle through some of many options for 5th starter makes a ton of sense.

All stuff that he will be better of learning in the Majors

How many times is he going to allow runners on in AAA? He won’t see a tipped pitch get punished nearly as often in OKC as he would with the ML team. Its a learning experience and its best for him to get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Plus, I think people are underrating his secondary stuff just like with Holland earlier in the year. Yes, they aren’t perfect or up to their full potential yet, but they are still solid pitches right now. He just needs more reps with those pitches which he can get up in the Majors.

I think Feliz will be that good that he forces the decision

I also don’t think its a good idea for the Rangers right now to worry about the 5th starter options. Get the highest ceiling guys in the rotation which means Feliz gets the edge over other potential rotation options.

IF we sign Sheets in the rotation, the guaranteed spots go to Sheets, Millwood, Feldman, and Holland. There are some nice options for that final spot, but I think you have to stick with Feliz and let him develop in the Majors. Otherwise, there’s not much left for him to do in the minors other than be able to dominate.

So sorry to guys like Hunter, Nippert, McCarthy, etc. They’ll eventually get their shot, but they’ll have to wait in the minors or the bullpen for that to happen.

At times it has looked like a really good pitch though. Well who is that exactly?

Giving 100 and something mil to lackey?

Sheets certainly isn’t some guaranteed ace right now, but I’d be glad to have him around for the relatively small deal he will command.

Id rather have sheets than an expensive mediocre guy or just 100% going with the inhouse options. If we get ownership to buy someone good then sure.

the preceding post was a great success.

The thing with Sheets

He won’t sign here unless guaranteed a spot in the rotation. The Rangers are deep enough RIGHT NOW not to do that. If he’d sign without that guarantee, given the Rangers’ history they’d give him a rotation spot anyway.

I dont’ know about Lackey. Maybe they can pry Halladay from Toronto for cheaper this winter. Never know what they’ll come up with.

by bigsteve on Aug 9, 2009 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

You said he'd be as good as Lackey.

When in reality he hasn’t pitched in FOREVER and nobody knows what he would end up looking like. I’d rather them stay away from him and acquire someone who’s healthy, via trade most likely. That way they can keep slots open in the rotation for guys who earn their way into it.

If Sheets would sign a minor league deal or agree to pitch out of the pen first, I’d have no problem with it. But that’s not how it will go down and the chances are good, believe it or not, that he would be a complete waste of time.

by Black Francis on Aug 9, 2009 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said he'd be as good as Lackey

But when healthy he is better than anyone on the Rangers right now. If you sign him you give him a rotation spot and as long as he is healthy he has that spot. If he gets hurt, which is a good possibility, then you go down to your minor leagues and grab one of your guys down there. And with our depth we have those guys down there aren’t gonna be the likes of Sidney Ponson or Kris Benson anymore. They are gonna be ML quality sgtarting pitching. Not as good as the guy they are replacing but good enough where you aren’t worried about dipping into the minors for someone.

There's no guarantee that Roy Halladay won't go down

What do you estimate are the chances that, if healthy, Sheets will/won’t be an effective starter next season?

about how sheets would pitch, like I said. That’s why I said I’d stay away from him. Get someone who’s MORE LIKELY to contribute and contribute a lot, even if it costs a lot. I know there are risks. There are always risks.

You've seen nothing to suggest that?

When healthy over the last 5 years he has never posted an ERA over 3.89
ERA+’s of 162, 128, 119, 117, and 139 during that span.

When healthy Ben Sheets is one of the best pitchers in the league much less on the Rangers

The question becomes…is he healthy. Which if we decide to give him a contract I would assume we feel he is healthy.

by bigsteve on Aug 9, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Let me clarify.

His 2008 was pretty damn good. For three years in a row before that he missed lots and lots of time.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to have the guy around. What I wouldn’t like to see is he being handed a rotation spot just because he’s the vaunted Ben Sheets.

This is not a pitching starved organization anymore. No matter what happens this year, in 2010 they are bona fide contenders, and teams like that do not hand over rotation spots to guys who didn’t even pitch the year before. This team is loaded with minor league talent and they’re not all headed for the 25 man roster. The price will be high but go after someone who has pitched the last few years and has been good. Someone that deserves a rotation spot. Someone there aren’t as many questions about.

You, apparently, don’t have many questions about Sheets. Forgive me but I’m just not so sure about him stepping right back into the game and regaining his old form.

by Black Francis on Aug 9, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Sheets
For three years in a row before that he missed lots and lots of time.

We agree he has missed significant time in his career.

My point is that when he has been on the mound he has been one of the best in the league. Better than anyone on the Rangers right now.

If the Rangers feel he is healthy and give him a contract he gets a rotation spot. Then if he gets hurt, like is very possible, you go grab a Harrison or McCarthy or Feliz from the minors and you don’t have that big a drop in production.

I have complete faith that if he is healthy he will be like the Sheets from the rest of his career. Thats why the question is…..is he healthy? If the answer is yes then you pencil him in your rotation no questions asked

You still haven't stated who's more likely to contribute,

and whom the Rangers could reasonably acquire.

Lackey you’ve said you’re not sure is worth his likely cost, if I’m reading your post correctly.

The alternative you’ve suggested seems to be to acquire Halladay more cheaply this winter, which would be great if Texas could pull it off ~ but, of course, they’d be competing with quite a few other teams for his services, and there’s still that sticky no-trade clause issue.

Who (else) strikes you as more likely to contribute than a healthy Ben Sheets?

I didn't say it was unfair.

I agree there are a ton of guys the Rangers could go after. My question to Black Francis was who was more likely to contribute than a healthy Ben Sheets, among the guys the Rangers could reasonably acquire.

Once we’ve established that, we can go on to consider and compare those guys’ prices, and that’ll help determine if going after Sheets is as bad an idea as Black Francis seems to think it is.

Assume Rangers wouldn't sign Sheets

(2) How do the Rangers project him in terms of future health?

I sign him and hope for 120 innings.

You take 120 innings of a healthy Ben Sheets and combine that with 50-60 innings of Harrison/McCarthy/Nippert/Moscoso/Hurley/whomever, and you’ll still end up with a well above replacement pitcher.

The benefit is that it would cost you the same as a Jon Garland/Doug Davis/replacement level pitcher would.

by studcrackers on Aug 9, 2009 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I think the first thing you have to determine

if you are the Rangers is whether Sheets is healthy or not. If he’s healthy does he look so damn good in workouts that you sign him and guarantee him a slot? If they make that determination I guess I’m fine with that. I mean it’s not going to be a deal that wrecks the organization or anything. However if it didn’t work and they’re fooling around with him until June, then it would hurt them in the standings.

Like I said I don’t know who I’d go after because I’m not a scout and I’m not a GM. As a fan I’d prefer to see them give up some depth to bring in someone who’s been healthy and effective.

I’ve never been one to talk about trades a lot. That’s a game I think is a waste of time and I just don’t get into it. But certainly there are guys out there and I sure wouldn’t mind them giving up quality to get quality. From what this team has shown they’re worth doing that.

by Black Francis on Aug 9, 2009 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I tend to agree with your first paragraph.

In signing a healthy (for the sake of argument) Sheets to a one-year deal for 2010, for example, the Rangers would be taking both the risk that Sheets doesn’t perform well, and that he might get hurt again and waste their money.

The question is: what’s worth that risk? And is it outweighed by the (lack of) other options?

Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).

by Snark on Aug 9, 2009 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

…it’s not their money I’m worried about. I’ve been working on the assumption he wouldn’t cost much.

There are two things I’d like to see them go after this winter:

1. A healthy starting pitcher of high quality. There are options…it just depends on what they’re willing to give up. Bigger risk than Sheets in the long term.

2. A bat.

The team is that close to being very, very good and I’d like to see them go for it.

I’m not going to scour the rosters but the main option I was thinking about was Zambrano. Really, though, since he was hurt badly enough to miss a whole year I’m thinking there are many, many, many guys who are more likely to contribute. Could be wrong but nobody knows. Nobody.

by Black Francis on Aug 9, 2009 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

OK.

I wouldn’t be a fan of the Rangers’ paying much to acquire Zambrano and his ~$18 million/year contract over the next three years. (And, of course, he also has a full no-trade clause, and he’s a pretty decent batter, so especially to come to the AL, you’d expect him to make waiving that clause cost you.)

But maybe, somehow, he comes cheaply in players returned to and salary paid by the Cubs.

My impression, though, is that you don’t want to debate individual players, and that our differences on Sheets tend to involve different hypothetical starting points.

He’s gonna be looking for a ML contract as opposed to a big bonus, so he should “only” cost 8-12 or so million a season, which is a big number, but not something a team couldn’t handle if they really loved him.

According to the ESPN article

here,

The next day, Chapman, Mejia, Pedro, Pedro’s father (who also knew Chapman) and a bodyguard squeezed into a car and drove 22 hours straight through France to get to Barcelona, stopping only for meals.

What a sight it was for people along the French countryside to see dark-skinned Latino men hop out of a car to ask for a place to eat. Chapman chuckles at the thought of it. For those precious moments, freedom tasted like a baguette.

It was official: Chapman was a free agent.

That could well be wrong ~ maybe he needs to do something else in Spain? ~ but it suggests Chapman’s already a free agent.

by Snark on Aug 9, 2009 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh he's realistically already a FA

He’d basically have to get deported or try to move to the US all of the sudden for that to not happen eventually, especially since he has his passport. It may be that all European Union countries are fairly similar these days in terms of the hoops you have to jump through to gain residency. But it’s not the easiest thing from what I understand, so you’d want any advantage, if there are differences by country. And I wouldn’t doubt that speaking the language is a positive factor in that as well.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 9, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

OK ~ that was more or less what I'd thought.

I actually spent a little while reading up on the requirements for Spanish residency, but I started getting tempted to move there, and that won’t work right now.

He really does look 21 which, along with his passport, cleared up pretty much all my doubts about him being one of those dreaded 21 going on 28 types.

He’s still super raw, though.

But that arm… oh, that freaking arm.

Looked to me like Holland didn’t shake off TT much this game. I think part of his problem has been his shaking off his catcher (ie. thinking too much)

Disappointed in Borbon. He is suppose to be a low K hitter. My fear is that he struggles early next year and makes us miss Marlon.

Holland will become the ace we have been waiting for in the middle of next year.

I hope this losssand series lose, puts the Angels into a slump and nice long losing streak.
