Tuesday a.m. Rangers things
Ugh.
Texas is now 6 back of Anaheim and 4 back of Boston.
The one move from last night I really have to wonder about is the decision not to use Frankie Francisco in the 9th. He hadn't pitched the night before, and keeping the deficit to one is pretty huge. I have to assume that Ron Washington figured he was going to need Frankie in at least one of the games today, and wanted to hold him back, but still...not that it probably would have made any difference, but I think that's a situation where it would have made sense to bring him in, even though it wasn't a save situation.
Jeff Wilson's game story has some quotes from Derek Holland about his lack of command yesterday.
Evan Grant's recap comments on the sparse crowd yesterday, a pretty poor turnout to see a team that is in a playoff race.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia has gone from hoping to be called up today to hoping to avoid surgery, as he had a setback in his comeback. Kevin Richardson and Brandon McCarthy are coming up, and aren't on the 40 man roster right now, so the Rangers are going to have to make at least one move today, with Salty going to the 60 day d.l. being a possibility. Joaquin Arias is another guy who would seem to be in danger of losing his 40 man spot, given that he's out of options after the season and hasn't done anything for a couple of years now to warrant a roster spot.
Dustin Nippert is starting one of the games today, and it could be his last start, with McCarthy coming back.
Jim Reeves says the Rangers need someone in the clubhouse to step forward and speak out, the way Dave Valle did in 1996.

Less than 17,000 for a team in playoff contention when there is near perfect weather
is really bad but the team has had a hard time drawing on Mondays all year. There was a Monday game in late June with the Angels that also drew less than 17,000.
Nolan Ryan has done a great job helping bump up attendance (3500 more per game than last year) but the franchise is still struggling to earn credibility with the fans lost in recent years.
How else do you explain it?
It’s not the price (you can get an upper-deck seat for $ 5), the product is very good and the weather hasn’t been that bad this year.

Sadly, I agree.
The Cowboys are getting ready, and even though their futility extends longer than that of the Rangers, they have rings and the Rangers have zilch.
There will be plenty of fair weather assholes at RBiA the minute they can grab a WS title, or at least an extended playoff birth.

I think a new owner is going to help tremendously.
So many good things have happened to the team this year but Tom Hicks being forced to sell the team is the very best thing that happened.
Yes, the Cowboys have THE foothold in the market but the Texas Rangers are the sleeping giant of MLB.
A good owner who understands marketing and reaching out to the fans who also has the passion to win that Mark Cuban has, could clean up with the Texas Rangers.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
You go, or don't go to the games because of Tom Hicks?
Does Jerry Jones keep people away from the Cowboys? Does Al Davis keep people out of the seats in Oakland?
Jerry Jones
made a huge difference as a hands on owner in 1989.
The Cowboys were routinely getting 45,000ish to their games (with lots of black-outs) when he took over the team and although the Cowboys have had several sub .500 teams since he took over, they almost always sell-out regular season games.
I’m not a Cowboys fan but he is an excellent owner, amongst the best in professional sports.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Facepalm
Right above: Jerry Jones is hated but helped attendance and is great for the team.
Here: Tom Hicks is hated but hurts attendance and a new owner is needed.
You seriously are a moron.
I don't know of anybody
who could ever question Jerry Jones’ desire to win and the same cannot be said about Tom Hicks.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
You can say it about any owner
and 99% of the time it’s not really warranted. You could rightly say that Hicks was very foolish in the ways he tried to win, but I really don’t believe he just didn’t want to. Evil bogeymen are very convenient scapegoats when things don’t turn out the way we want them to.
I think it’s at least as reasonable to question Jones’ desire to win given his ridiculous fantasy-life as GM when he has no business actually running a football team instead of just owning it.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
If Tom Hicks doesn't - or didn't - want the Rangers to win, what did he want?
Why the A-Rod and Chan Ho deals? Why giving Daniels authority to go way over slot in the draft for years? Why invest so heavily in LA FA?
I think it is very silly to say Tom Hicks doesn’t want to win. How he goes about it is the questionable thing; same as Jerry Jones.

Really?
It seems like the more the team wins the more desperate he gets, and the more he contradicts himself. Maybe (in my mind, at least) it’s just lately the cracks have been showing more.
Nope
When the team loses, he just has more things to use as ammo. When the team is winning, he concentrates on a smaller amount of things. Either way, it gets old real quick and I already hate Adam for mentioning attendance in his AM things post.

I don't blame anyone for not coming out
The team, historically, has done nothing in most people’s minds to justify coming out (i.e. spending money) to support them. Hardcore fans will be there, of course, but I think it’s silly to expect more than 17,000 or how many ever people there were out there last night, even in a “playoff” race that’s looking less and less like a race every day.
They’ll get an attendance bump next season, if nothing else.

It was hot as hell the entire summer of 1998 (second only to 1980 that I remember)
yet they had one of their best years in attendance.
The heat makes no difference whatsover with the exception of day games in August (see Red Sox game last month).

36,000+ per game in 1998

I think it's more than that
Arlington is far, far, away from Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Mesquite, Allen. Mentally, I think fans perceive it to be a pain to get out to the ballpark.
And also, I think people underestimate the fact that we’re dealing with arguably the worst franchise in sports (1 playoff game victory in 30 yrs; only team in MLB without a playoff win); don’t underestimate that.
It is a pain to get to the ballpark
but Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Mesquite, Allen (all have a lot more people) were just as far from the ballpark in 1998 as those cities are now and it’s now much easier to get there.
Getting there is not bad but getting out can be an epic clusterfuck.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
But since 1998
you have 10 seasons more seasons of sucking (excluding 1999, of course). 10 more seasons of Tom Hicks, 10 more seasons of ill-will. And more of the metroplex is concentrated up north than in 1998, for sure.
Yeah...
…take Frisco, for example.
In the 2000 census, its population was 33,714.
On April 24, 2008, The Dallas Morning News reported that its population had topped 100,000.
Exponential growth north of town definitely doesn’t help the Rangers’ attendance situation.
"I love winning." - rockin_rangers, on May 16, 2009
One of the Rangers biggest problems with attendance (and there are several)
is their inability to market properly to Collin County.
It’s one of the riches counties in the country. Within that county are lots of upper-class families that love all sports yet the Rangers have failed miserably tapping into it.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Collin County
continues to grow and is not going away.
Not aggressively marketing to the area is flushing dollars down the john.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
It's simpler than that
win and more people from Collin County will come. Otherwise they just go to Frisco for a cheaper, less hassled ballpark experience.

The team is winning this year
but the franchise has lost credibility in recent years with the fans.
Tom Hicks treated the fans like shit so in turn, the fans treated his franchise with apathy.
That’s why you get less than 17,000 at a game with the Angels in June.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
The team has been losing for a long time
a few months aren’t going to make the team sell 30,000 tickets on Mondays. The overall attendance is up nicely and I’m sure the team is pleased with that given the economy. I’d expect it to rise again next year.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Putting the AA team in Frisco was a good move, though.
Still, it’s an uphill climb to convince people to drive ~45 miles each way to watch a team that has one winning season in this millennium.

I think most people in Collin County think driving for an hour to go see the running joke of MLB is the wrong strategy. Win some damn games and they – like everyone else – will show up. Maybe even you will watch a game?
The #5 media market team is winning
yet they still pull less than 17,000 while still very much in the playoff hunt and had been gone for 10 days.
They have made a nice improvement this year but nights like last night are inexcusable.

Can only speak for myself
but the 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive to Arlington from Plano/Garland between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM is a total nightmare. You are in rush hour traffic the whole time. I brave it several times a year but on a Monday after a weekend I am more inclined to just stay home and watch on TV.

i guess i don't see the relevance in frisco population
did dallas county get smaller? no
did tarrant county get smaller? no
did the ballpark get bigger? no
it’s actually EASIER to get to the ballpark with the HOV lanes on 30 (breeze last night!!!) and the toll road cutting through the north side of the metroplex.
the fact is that there are more people in the entire metroplex and filling a 50,000 seat stadium should not be a problem IF the team was perfroming at an acceptable level on an ongoing basis.

Sure it is
But you have 1.75 million people living in the same county as the ballpark. That is an increase of 21%. Collin County only has about 775k total. Let’s not overstate how important Collin County’s population is to the Rangers.
Tarrant:1,750,091
Dallas:2,412,847
Collin: 762,010
Denton:636,557
Granted there are income differences of course — but the fact is Collin’s total population is a relatively small piece of what they can draw.

Population increase means fans of other teams live here now
You know, since there are so many recent transplants here, I wonder if that affects attendance a bit. Most of those people don’t have any baseball loyalties, and the ones that do probably still follow their hometown teams. But the people without previous loyalties represent a lot of potential fans. When the team wins a lot of those people will consider a game or three if they’re interested in baseball at all.
I believe the team could draw 3.5 million fans, but not until they’ve already won a division title or two and look like a serious contender for the WS after already either winning the division or WC or coming very, very close to doing so.

I'm depressed
That game yesterday had me horrified, hopeful, and then crushed in a matter of about one and a half hours.
If they had won, this team would have had the boost it needed to go on a long tear. But that is a stomach-punch game right there. I have trouble seeing how this team recovers from that.

Everyone here is surprised about the attendance numbers
because anyone who posts on here cares about the Rangers. But guess what? Apparently people outside our little club think they are, as a franchise, a pretty great running joke, and a nice distraction until football and basketball seasons start, two sports which are, sadly, now more popular than baseball, especially in a market in which the football and basketball teams have had far more success than the baseball team.
This year was a huge step in the right direction, and hopefully got people’s attention, but it will take a lot more than a nice 120 game stretch to change years of reinforced disappointment/indifference from a fanbase. Hopefully we will finish strong and generate some preseason hype next year, instead of it taking until August before any local or national media take serious notice.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

attendance numbers have been pretty solid on the year, right? This seems like a pretty solid one year turnaround for the team, all things considered.

Yup.
It’s sad because Texas produces enough baseball talent that obviously there is a big interest in baseball. But you can’t have one good season in 10 years and expect everyone to jump back on board when it begins to show signs of maybe starting to begin the process of looking like it’s about to turn around. Sure, that’s overstating it a bit, since they’ve been in contention all year this year, but I don’t think you see the kind of turnaround that most people were hoping for in one year unless you have Dodgers/Yankees/Cardinals/etc type of season. If the Rangers were 3 games up on Anaheim right now, to where there was plenty of drama but it looked likely that the Rangers would make the playoffs, I think it’d be different.
I don’t think it’s unfair to expect people to hold off on becoming invested in the Rangers again until they have a team that is a true contender for a full year or two. I’m not sure you could even call this team a true contender, despite the results, because I think there are 3-4 teams that are significantly better.

It's just so depressing to see the same pattern several times a day...

Lather. Rinse. Repeat (as unnecessary).

As far as I can tell
we’re just kicking the ball around on attendance, Chad.
I could throw down the gloves and have a protracted argument with some of the Usual Suspects but I’m staying on point.
Do you have a theory as to why a team in the #5 media market that’s been gone for 10 days and is winning plus is in post-season contention can only draw less than 17,000?
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Because they are basically an afterthought to most sports fans..
Sure, they draw for the Bostons and MFYs, but until they put some success under their belt, most casual fans see their record and don’t see “in contention”, they see “close but no cigar”. Until they get a track record sufficient to get more attention on the nightly news, they won’t be a regularly well-attended team.

The 2001 team, coming off a 71-91 (or somesuch record) had more than 34,000+ at their games and went something like 73-89.
Attendance went way down in 2003 (25,000ish) but jumped back up the next two years.
Something happened before/during/after the 2005 season that made the fans turn their back on This Thing.
I doubt it was one thing and probably the confluence of several things but something happened that killed the credibility with the fans.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
It's not a credibility issue..
Every year removed from the brief playoff run of the 90’s means fewer and fewer casual fans even follow them, much less plan a weeknight trip to the park.
Viewership is up, which I’d suspect is a leading indicator to attendance as long as the economy and the team both trend upward.
Yeah, we’ve had some ups and downs in attendance this decade, but you’re trying way too hard to find a single smoking gun. But you’ll find one I’m sure.

Attendance
Let’s see what happens next season. I’ve read some studies that say that a contending team (which was previously bad) usually doesn’t get the big attendance boost you’d expect until the next year.
Officially gay for Neftali Feliz
Donuts seems to be indicating that a change in GM affected attendance.
Which is, in a word, retarded.
Let's just say it was the confluence of many different things
(some more important than others) that have caused the major dip in attendance.
The addition of Nolan Ryan seems to have helped a great deal but nights like last night confirm there is still a lot of work to do in this regard.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
It's retarded for you to say people buy a ticket to see Nolan Ryan sitting there like a blob.
People go to games this year because the team is pretty good. People skipped out in 2005 because it was a Steaming Pile.
Get a grip, idiot.
I...
Why can’t…
I thought…
How…
But when…

The poster child of why I don't completely believe in the current defensive metrics available
is Nelson Cruz.
Yes, he has the monster arm and I believe he has excellent range as well.
But he fucks up a ton out there with bad routes, overthrows, missed cut-offs or stone hands (see Oakland where he hurt himself or Sunday in Minnesota).
I gagree with Rhyner somewhat about Nelson Cruz and the fact that he can’t hit LH pitching plus he turns 30 next year makes him prime trade bait in my book.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
even if UZR overrates cruz
its not all the way from one of the worst defensive corner OFs to one of the best.
and if you trade cruz its as he enters arbitration, next year he is likely to be worth far more than he will earn no matter how down on him you are.
can’t hit lefties? no this year he hasn’t, but hes right handed, he did in the minors, and prior to this year he had no real career mlb split vs them. besides, you face righties more often than lefties and hes got a .976 ops vs them!
the preceding post was a great success.
Nelson Cruz batting average v LH pitching in The Show.
.217 in 2006.
.212 in 2007
.204 in 2009
2008, when he came up with a chip on his shoulder and pissed off at the world (hit .419 v LH) would seem to be an aberration confirmed by his worst batting average ever v LH pitching in The Show this year.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
thanks for posting numbers I clearly just looked at!
2006-2007 were bad all around and dividing up small sample sizes has no purpose. Here are the stats that matter.
Pre-2009 MLB ops vs lefties: .735
Pre-2009 MLB ops vs righties: .745
2005-2008 minors vs lefties: 1.014 ops
2005-2008 minors vs righties: .984 ops
2005 is as far back as minorleaguesplits wants to go.
To say this player, right handed no less, can only hit righties because of 108 at bats vs lefties this year is foolish imo.
the preceding post was a great success.
Dshepp
The Cruz track record in The Show means much more than what he did in the minors.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
when determining a players lefty/righty split ability?
and I clearly included mlb numbers prior to this year.
So say its april 1st 2009 and you take a look at those numbers. You clearly tell me he has no discernible split. 5 months of a bad split later and thats just who he is? No question about it?
the preceding post was a great success.
Cruz
looks like he should be an absolute beast v LH pitching in The Show agreed but I believe much more in actual performance and he’s terrible in this regard.
Such a strange player and very little about him makes sense.
Built like a freight train and almost as fast with the athleticism of a graceful power forward in the NBA.
Facing the end of his career after getting cut from a shitty 2008 team he promptly terrorizes the world that year and it didn’t matter who was pitching (AAA or MLB).
Finally makes it as an every day player in 2009 and has an excellent year but he still can’t hit for dick against LH pitching.
Same can be said for his defense. Not sure who has more tools than Nelson Cruz but my gawd, he fucks up a bunch in the OF.
Strange, strange player.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
I think we should agree on that last paragraph and move on..
Not sure what he is either, but that’s why I’m not completely convinced what he isn’t either.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Ok then
In 2006 (in the show), he hit better against LHP than RHP, but stunk against both.
In 2007 (in the show), he stunk against LHP, but still wasn’t much to look at against RHP (.714 OPS)
In 2008 (in the show), he hit massively better against LHP than RHP.
In 2009 (in the show) , he HAS stunk against LHP.
So, are we to beleive that the 06-07 numbers indicate that he can’t hit lefties or just that he couldn’t hit anyone? Based on his 2008 epiphany, I’m prepared to discount those seasons somewhat.
I just don’t think the data clealy indicates what you’re saying. If you want to make the case that he’s too old and too iffy to be a core contributor going forward, then I’ll give you that. But to say he’s basically a platoon guy isn’t supportable.

I don’t what he is at this point which makes me wonder if I should trade him at his highest value (to date) just before he turns 30.
We’re going to need to replace about 300 IP’s from a starting pitcher next year and Nelson Cruz could be a helluva trading chip to somebody like SFO.

The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Padilla gave us 108 IPs this year.
McCarthy is going to give us 85-95 IPs this year.
Nipples will probably give us 70 IPs this year.
Benson / Mathis gave us 20-30 IPs as starters this year.
That’s approximately 300 IPs from starters that I’m not expecting to come back next year. Mathis & Nipples will be here but not as starters coming out of Surprise.
I see Millwood, Holland, Feldman, Hunter starting off but we’re gonna need somebody who can be depended on to soak some quality IPs as a starter next year.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Why won't McCarthy and Nippert be back?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
They either suck too much or can't stay healthy enough to take the bump 30x's a year.
Or both.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
How does that equal 300 innings though?
Millwood, Feldman, Holland, Hunter as 4/5 of the rotation. When was the last time a #5 starter threw 300 innings? Are you expecting 33 complete games out of that spot in the rotation?
And I can almost 100% guarantee McCarthy is back next year and would put the percentage of Nippert being here at about 80% right now
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
From Millwood, Feldman, Holland, Hunter
somebody is going to get hurt or be ineffective or both.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yep...
the replacing 300 innings is bullshit.
Do we expect Holland and Hunter to only start as much as they have this year? They will combine for just over 200 innings this year. Some of that from the ’pen for Holland. I expect them to be in the rotation from the start next year and be closer to 325 innings next season. So we are cut that 300 down to 200.
Nippert will be around and probably in a similar role. Long man/spot starter. He will probably see as many innings or more next season. Since he was hurt the first half of ’09. So we cut that 200 down to 125.
McCarthy will also be here. Not sure how many innings his health will allow him to pitch, but let’s put it on the low side and say only 50 from McCarthy.
125 down to 75.
Benson / Jennings? Please. Guys like Feliz, Strop, Moscoso, Harrison and Madrigal can easily not only replace those innings but upgrade them as well. 75 down to 0.
To summarize, Josey is full of shit.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Feliz is my favorite option
McCarthy and Nippert are returning next season. As will Harrison (remember him, the guy you wanted to drive the bandwagon for) and Hurley. Past that, you have Kiker, Moscoso, and Mathis who could give you some of those emergency starts. Its not that hard to replace the innings that Padilla/Benson/Mathis/Nippert/McCarthy gave us this year

Why do we need one of them to take the ball 30 times
I’d love for one of them too, but if they struggle or get hurt then that is why you go to one of the other options. The exact “problem” you’ve pointed out for next year is how are we going to replace guys that haven’t started 30 games for us this year due to a DFA, injuries, or ineffectiveness.
The arms are here. The most important thing would be to make sure to not jeopardize the defense for next year so we can continue to have our pitchers look like scrubs at times and still leave the game after 6 innings with <3 ER given up.

The way those stats work
If he keeps taking bad routes to balls, then it will affect his overall UZR, +/-, PMR, or w/e if it is preventing him from making the play. Instead, all of his horrible routes have caused him to still reach the ball with time to make the out.

I do not bat him cleanup behind hambone. This team needs a real clean-up hitter, a hitter who can hit good pitching. Cruz would be lovely at #5.

.265 .340 .551 with immense power to all fields and a batting average that is likely to increase if his BABIP normalizes – that is a real cleanup hitter in my book.
Sure if we bring in Manny or Prince Fielder or Miguel Cabrera, I’d bump Cruz down in the lineup, but I can’t think of many realistic options that would be a better cleanup hitter for this team next year than our own Nellie Cruz.

Vlad especially. Have you seen Vlad swing the bat recently? He’s gonna make a great DH and middle of the lineup bat for a couple more years.
I don’t quite trust Nelly yet to be a good hitter throughout a full year. If Nelly can be what he’s done since the beginning of July, then I’d be happy to have him bat 4th and Hideki 5th.
Cruz in his last 553 PAs (since last year)
has a .280/.360/.564 line. That’s better than what Vlad since last season which includes his current hot streak. Cruz is for real people. He’s proven himself for the past year now and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

The return will have to be pretty good to trade him
Cruz is one of the top defensive COFs in the league with great power and has developed some good patience at the plate. Like Tricer said, his BA should go up next year if all things remain equal so you’re looking at a guy who should crack the .900 OPS mark. Since most of our problems this year have been offensive related, it would be foolish to give up such a strong player for anything that isn’t greatly upgrading another roster spot.
