Craig Gentry joining the Rangers
Per Beau Vaughan, Craig Gentry is getting called up to the majors. The link is to an interview Vaughan does with Gentry, which is pretty entertaining.
Gentry is a guy who has long been considered a terrific defensive centerfielder, a 10th round pick from 2006 who would be Rule 5 eligible this offseason if he weren't on the Rangers' 40 man roster. He's been able to steal bases in the minors, but has had no power, and until this year wasn't getting on base much, either, but he took a step forward in the Texas League this year, and has apparently earned a look as a defensive replacement/pinch runner for September.
With Gentry, Richardson and McCarthy all being added, two spots on the 40 man roster will need to be cleared.

He wasn't in last nights RR
line up. I thought maybe he had been promoted to OKC. Might as well add him and let him battle for the 5th OF spot next spring.
As for the 40, Arias has to be one to drop. What about Diamond?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Those would be my 2 guesses
Both are dead weight at the moment.
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
My guess
Arias is DFA’d, Salty goes to the 60 day d.l.
If they drop two people, instead of d.l.ing Salty, I’m assuming it is Dozer, or maybe Golson.

I'd think Dozer & Ole' Shed
have more value than Diamond or Arias at this point.
And that is really, really sad.

I would drop Diamond before Mendoza or Golson
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
For Gentry...no
But I think that has more to do with roster composition than performance

I would drop CancerBla before 'doza or Golson, talk about dead weight....
I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.
Salty to 60 day DL
Drop Arias
theres your three spots for those guys
Looking at the 40 right now for this winter (assuming Salty goes to 60 and Arias is dropped) we will have 3 guys on the 60 that will have to go back on the 40 man. We lose 7 guys so that leaves 4 spots for rule 5ers. Im guessing Kirkman, Phillips, and Pina get 3 of those.

I like the it
At worst, Gentry’s a cool late-inning pinch runner/defensive replacement, and that’s nice to have aound.
Though I wonder if he’ll keep that 40 spot over the winter- it does seem a little redundant to have him and Shed around.

Why would they bring him up now if they weren't gonna keep him on the 40 this winter?

Ok, where's my glossary???

Yeah, that one took me a while too..
For about a month, I thought that was Dozer. Anyone remember the Korean kid who was in a MASH episode where he needed glasses, helped take care of radar’s animals after his shark-jumping departure, and then ultimately got to go help out on radar’s familiy farm?? Dead ringer for Dozer in glasses, IMO.

Beau Vaughan's interview
So, I got a recommendation. You let me know if this is a good idea or a bad idea. Walk into the clubhouse tomorrow in Arlington, see Hammy, Josh Hamilton. And you just look at him and say, ’I’m here, (female dog). Get the (physical act of love) out the way.’
If I’m Craig Gentry, I’d take this advice to heart.
I was about to post this exact same thing
BV slays me, that dude is hilarious. And his editing profanities out and substituting phrases like “female dog” and “poop” makes it even more hilarious.

I suspect
That Knoxie is out of options. I would be in favor of just DFA’ing him, though.
You just know the Royals will claim him.

I'll guess that Willie Eyre is a goner...
If he’s not being recalled today.. why does he need a 40 spot?
Diamond will go before Eyre does

excellent!
I soloed in the Mile High Club!
Well Diamond can as well
…so I don’t exactly get your point.
Once again...why?
Diamond only has one option year left after this one…..Eyre has 2
Diamond is still in AA with ZERO ML experience…..Eyre has ML experience
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I really hope that Diamond doesn't keep his spot just cuz he's all that's left from DVD...
I don’t think they operate that way, but it’s really the only reason i can see him making it through the winter.

How in the world does Eyre have 2 options left?
Reminds me of R.A. Dickey making it like 15 years before he ran out of options.

Oh, I don't doubt Scott's list
Just curious how it worked out that way. I know there are some weird procedural rules that keep a guy from burning an option, he must have taken advantage of a few of those.
"You dont know much do you, Big Steve?"
--Finnerty.Fan on Aug 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT
From what I recall
Hes had alot of the “sign a minor league contract, get it purchased, then get DFAd” which doesn’t burn an option up.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Ahh, good point
For some reason, I just always assume those guys signed to minor league contracts are out of options by the time they resort to non-roster invites to camp, but that’s probably not accurate.

Willie pirtched for OKC last night.
They may think he is unable to pitch today and may just wait a day to call him up.

Gentry getting called up ...
that sure leaves Frisco without many good options in CF during a playoff drive. It’s too bad the org doesn’t have a shutdown CF defender to plug the gap left out there for a week – you know, somebody loose and free, without a home but available to play. Hmmmm …
couldn't they promote Paisano or demote Golson?
I feel like I’m missing what you are referencing…
"You can probably stick a fork in the Rangers' playoff chances for 2009." - AJM on 7/26 with the team 4.5 games out
Freel
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
"When you have a weapon on your shoulder like he has, you can be cool." RW on Perez
And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
I'm relatively sure than shroomer knew that..
I think he’s suggesting Freel could be that guy, but I can’t see the two of them going down to AA.

Also ...
wouldn’t it be nice if Bakersfield could add a quality arm to their staff and work him some innings the last week of the season so that he would be available during the playoffs? Somebody loose and free, somebody available but without a home? Hmmm …

So what you're saying is
you might know something because you subscribe to Lone Star Dugout? :)
The one thing I don't like about this
is if they wind up taking him off of the 40 man roster in the offseason, they will have made it easier for someone else to take him.
They still shouldn't.
His performance warrants getting a shot at AAA. So if he fails in a league which he isn’t ready for (imo) then that doesn’t change much for me.
The fact that he warrants a shot at AAA
doesn’t say much about his potential as a major leaguer.

Gentry had a similar breakout as Boggs did
They are different type players. Boggs hit for pretty good power in AA at 24 to earn his 40 spot
Gentry has hit for better average with much better speed. They both supposedly play good defense. I see no reason to drop Gentry from the 40 this winter
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
It just depends. Because Gentry’s value is in peripheral skills, he is easier to cut than some others, like pitchers, particularly if they feel like they have his peripheral skills covered elsewhere. I’m not predicting that he’s removed, but I think that he’s probably fringy enough that it’s too early to tell.

So Beau Vaughan had to issue an apology
Last night, I put up an interview with Craig Gentry. It has been made clear to me that the subject matter of that interview was inappropriate for this forum. And I apologize to anyone who was offended by the posting last night. It was an error in judgement to 1) make mention of his impending call-up before the team officially announced it and 2) go over the subject matter we did. I am truly sorry to have misrepresented the Texas Rangers. My conduct was not in keeping with the behavior the Rangers expect of their players. I am sorry.

Since it was never mentioned in the past..I just figured noone cared.
will you send it to me?
I love Beau’s candid interviews and but I’m particularly interested in reading the one with Gentry since I coached Craig a long time ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to read it befre Vaughan apologized and took it down.
