I don't listen to Cowherd

but the NL is an inferior league. How many times have we seen a player that can’t hack it in the AL go to the NL and become awesome again (see Holliday and Smoltz)?Or a decent player go to the NL and dominate (Lee and Sabathia)? And oh yeah, the NL All Stars can’t beat the AL All Stars.

I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.

What gets me off the ledge. . .

. . . is that this team might win close to 20 more games than I expected when I fully expected them to be good soon with all this talent. Missing the playoffs is a large ding in the unexpected current excitement, but the fact that it’s even a discussion is a huge boost to the future excitement.

by philkid3 on Sep 2, 2009 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I know

This has been a great season so far. I like the fact that this year is the learning curve for the kids rather than next year as they learn how to win tight games down the stretch. I like how they show no fear or get down after a loss like the other night. Even in that game when they were 11-0 down they could have packed it in and just not tried.

I'm pretty sure he is

He has given no indication that he realizes he’s supposed to struggle and occasionally give up runs.

I expect the next 10 years to be an amalgamation of Greg Maddux 1994-1995, Walter Johnson 1912-1913, and Pedro 1999-2000, with a little 1968 Bob Gibson, 1985 Doc Gooden, and 1905 Christy Mathewson mixed in. Oh, and of course he’ll break Nolan’s single season strikeout mark next season.

GOOD GRIEF, I just looked up Neftali’s numbers on baseball-reference. His ERA+ is 988!! His K/BB is 26.00!! His K/9 is rather pedestrian, by comparison, at only 11.9. I know it’s a very small sample size of 19.2 IP, but geez. Those aren’t just video game numbers, those are historic, Bo Jackson-in-Tecmo Super Bowl-type numbers.

but give him credit for his other hits.

I don’t know that CDavis is back (I don’t know of anybody that sucked dick that much for that long that ever came back) but he is living a rather charmed life courtesy of the baseball gods and I’d rather be lucky than good.

Can’t wait until the training wheels come off and he’s allowed to move up in the order.

If he’s a productive hitter in the 4,5,6 holes, we’ll know he’s back.

I have never seen any major league player (muchless an AL 1B) be given close to

277 plate appearances where he had a .256 obp and struck out 114 times plus hit .143 with a .491 ops v LH pitching.

Most GMs pull the plug when somebody is drowning to the degree CDavis was earlier this season.

Most players who come close to what Davis did (and “close” is a relative term) are out of MLB within two years.

I am stunned that you avoided my point and went on a Davis bash yet again

Interestingly, Hank has a .236 BA and a 276 OBP in 435 PA this year. That itself stinks to high heaven.

And how has he done against LHP? In 121 PA, he has posted a phenomenal .229 BA with a .240 OBP. I have almost no athletic talent whatsoever, yet I’m pretty sure I could do better than an eleven point difference between BA and OBP. Chris “Mr. Suck” Davis has a 40 point differential vs. lefties, so at least he was making an effort to get on base in spite of his contact issue. Hank’s numbers, though, suggest that he doesn’t give a damn about getting on base. He just wants to swing hard and hit homers.

Doing what Davis did at his level of age and experience is called a top prospect struggling mightily. As long as you’ve followed baseball you should know that. Doing what Hank is doing at his level of age and experience is what gets a man run out of MLB in short order. Chris is learning. Hank has NO excuses for his incompetence.

Do you know of any players in major league history allowed to

drown as much as Davis did for as long as he did?

I don’t so I have no idea what to expect from him because he was so good last year.

I’m rooting for him because if he’s as bad as he was previously, we’re not going to finish 24-15 since the latest changes were made.

by Josey Wales on Sep 2, 2009 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

It would be borderline impossible for him to be that bad down the stretch

And as such, I don’t know why one thinks he would be. He had a good track record in 2008, he admitted what the problems were and what he needed to do to fix them, and he then proceeded to set the PCL on fire after he figured it out.

Taking all the evidence into consideration, there’s no reason why he should be as bad down the stretch as he was.

Don't look now...

But TT is drowing pretty badly right now himself. Probably the only thing saving him from a prolonged Davis-like streak of futility is that he’ll run out of games.

20 K’s in 46 PAs since Salty went down. ugh.

Salty was dreadful himself from

June thru August and the only reason he played as much as he did is because he was the centerpiece to the Tex Trade.

.217 average / .265 obp with 43K’s in 140ish plate appearances with 4 HR / 11 RBI- just awful.

In significantly less playing time, TT has been bad but also has 6 HR / 16 RBI during the same time.

And he had a horrible throw to the plate that cost a run and couldn’t pick another play.

Once again the Rangers were in FIRST PLACE with Davis manning 1b to start the season.

Not to mention Davis didn’t run and hide during a big series and had meaningful hits during those games where as Hank had major shrinkage against Boston.

There were actually THREE pickoffs that he blew v Tampa

Two of them were arguably partly the pitcher’s fault, but I feel sure Davis would have thrown his body in front of them anyway.

Blalock is bad at the plate and worse in the field. And to make matters worse, I don’t get the sense that he even cares. You could tell back in June that Davis was hurting because he knew he was hurting the team. I’m not sure Hank feels the same way. He sure doesn’t act like it.

from EG

Doesn’t sound good.

"At this time of the season, missing even one pitch kills me," Young said. "So obviously, this is pretty tough. I’m not going to pout about it. I’ll be aggressive with my treatment and get back as quickly as possible, but I don’t have many answers yet."

The answers will start to be formed Wednesday afternoon when Young undergoes an MRI exam. The scheduling of that exam alone indicates the injury is serious. 2B Ian Kinsler didn’t have an MRI when he went on the DL with a hamstring strain in August. Kinsler missed just over two weeks with his injury.

We will be fine at 3'rd if MY is out for a short period.

With Vizquel playing 3B we become the best fielding infield in baseball. And offensively except for slugging Vizquel’s numbers aren’t too far behind Michael’s. Don’t get me wrong I want Michael to get back ASAP but we can replace him for a short period.

Here is anothe reason that gives me hope: Last 30 days

Kinsler: 338/423/691
Hamilton: 357/405/513
Davis: 355/364/548
