OT: TV Talk
Don't know if this is worth enough people's time to be a FanPost. And if it turns out not to be, I am familiar with the delete function as it pertains to worthless FanPosts. But, there was some good conversation going late in the GDT today about what shows out there are worth watching. And I am always down to talk good television.
So, right now I am pretty focused on catching all the way up on Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I started watching this past weekend and have gotten through Season 2. I'm hoping to get caught up before the season premier which is about 2 weeks away. I can give that a ringing endorsement. The show is funny, clever, well acted, and the characters are really easy to get into. I am borrowing the DVDs right now, but I will probably add them to my own collection at some point.
I'm up to date on Entourage and Rescue Me, and those two series are both in my DVD collection. Definitely worth your time.
I have fallen behind Lost, 24, and The Wire. Waaay behind on Lost and The Wire. Only one season behind 24. I'll have to budget time for all three because I was into all these shows, just lost track of them and was DVR-less for about a year.
I am going to have to get into Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, and Weeds from what all my friends tell me. Don't know much about any of those series, but I trust my friends' judgment.
Shows that are off air that I highly recommend purchasing/renting/borrowing: Band of Brothers, The Shield
And my biggest TV sin.....I have never seen a single episode of The Sopranos...that is not only a TV sin, but also a serious threat to my mancard.
Best networks: HBO, Showtime, FX
Favorite show ever: The Shield
Favorite show on air: Rescue Me
So, any thoughts?

There's another show
That I thought had promise but NBC killed it. Kings. They did air a complete season, though.

Agreed
The Kings cancellation was a shame. It was doomed from the start, though…it never had a strong time slot, wasn’t traditionally marketable, and was a big-budget production. It’s the sort of thing that might have survived on Sci-Fi under a slightly different production viewpoint, It’s too bad it wasn’t pitched there.

Was Kings in that Friday primetime slot?
NBC hasn’t had much luck in that time slot lately… They deaded Las Vegas, which had developed a decent following, during the writers strike and I don’t think they’ve had anything running more than a season in that slot since…
by N41D on Sep 1, 2009 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep.
And it was definitely flawed, but it was a very interesting concept. Lots of Biblical parallels. Most of the actors were great, especially Ian McShane. And the production was second to none. I think I read somewhere that it cost $20MM per episode or something like that? I’m not sure if I believe that figure but it was shot in NYC so who knows.

I loved that show.
It didn’t start out on Saturday, though. They moved it there halfway through the season. It actually started out on Sunday night, I believe, which is really no better.
I loved everything about that show.

evidently the part that mcshane had
The role for King Silas was originally written for Ian McShane, but Green thought that it would be unlikely to get him to play the lead. McShane was sent the script and enjoyed it, and was very open to returning to television after the critically acclaimed HBO series Deadwood

NBC basically screwed it over (read a story on digg) saying there was no market for it and that it was too smart for people to get lol

such bullshit.
It’s a fucking TV show. Really it was very soap opera-ish, but the production quality and the writing at times vaulted it way above that. I know I and most of us here are probably smarter than your average TV viewer, but still, that show was NOT hard to understand at all.
The only reason it got canceled was the price tag. Someone from an earlier regime green lighted it and somehow they filmed a full season before ever even aired. By that time a new executive was in place, I believe, and she did everything she could to make sure it got low ratings. They didn’t want to pay for a second season.
On some levels that makes business sense, I guess. I don’t know. I’m not in that business. But you’d think if you had already spent that much money on filming that many episodes you’d promote the hell out of it to at least get some of your money back. Then, if people are tuning in you consider moving everything to soundstages and to Montreal or whatever to cut costs.

I finished Sunny about a month ago...
Greatness…
I’m just now starting to burn through The Wire, a couple of episodes into Season 2… Not quite as easy as ripping off a handful of Sunny episodes at a time… Really enjoying it though. Can’t believe I’m just now catching on.
I’m completely up-to-date on 24 and Lost, as both of those have been must-see-TV for me the last few years… I’m only a couple of episodes into this season’s Entourage, but they’re all on TiVo so I’ll catch up there soon enough…
Favorite show on air: The Office
Favorite series ever: Seinfeld

The Wire is definitely a little harder to catch up on
Always Sunny has been a breeze to get through though. I can’t believe I didn’t even mention The Office. That’s one I don’t even DVR…I watch that bad boy live. And of course Seinfeld is up there on the list and in the DVD collection…as it should be.
I’m gonna have to come up with my own top ten Shows list at some point.

Very similar to you.
The Shield = best show
Trying to catch up on Lost. Interested in Flash Forward this fall. Really need to watch The Wire.
Battlestar Galactica was one of my favorites. My wife is even hooked on it now and is going through season 2.
How I Met Your Mother is good as well. Wife really likes Big Love. Would eventually like to watch Entourage, Weeds, Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
Other possibilities include Defying Gravity and a few others this fall.

+1 on Defying Gravity
I started watching just for Laura Harris, but the show itself is really pretty good. Almost kind of like BSG, minus the Cylons.

What is Defying Gravity?
Give us a synopsis for the uninitiated. I’ve never even heard of it, which makes me wonder.
by Hull Fan on Sep 2, 2009 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
It’s set a few decades in the future, which explains away how we’ve suddenly developed the technology to send a crew of astronauts on a 6 year mission around the solar system in the “Antares”.
The show is basically about the crew and some of the people at ground control back on earth, and it kind of develops plotlines and character backround though flashbacks to their time spent training for the mission in between depicting current events on the Antares. The underlying plot line so far is there’s also apparently some kind of powerful thing or being (we haven’t been told what, at this point) on board the ship which the honchos at ground control have kept a secret from most of the crew. It’s apparently got more to do with their mission than has been said, and also might be screwing with the minds of some of the crewmembers.
It kind of has yet to really get going in some ways, but I think there could be pretty cool show here depending upon how they develop their plotlines. Heck, True Blood didn’t really get going until the last few episodes of the first season either.

Show on USA Network. Really enjoy it
How I Met Your Mother is a great show and really fits that Monday time slot on CBS
Band of Brother was great. Highly recommend.
Old school Arrested Development always cheers me up (canceled way too soon)
Really want to see Always Sunny…hear great things about it, might take the DVDs from brother….
And since it was just announced today Mad Men will get a 4th season, might as well pick up on that

30 Rock delivers, I'm always laughing
I didn’t start Tivo’ing it until season 3, and after I watched a few episodes I rented the season 1 & 2 DVDs them in less than a week. Tracy Morgan kills in it, Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin are excellent, and there are an abundance of funny supporting characters (I especially like Dr. Spaceman). Bad news is the premiere is about a month after most other fall premieres…

Some scatter shooting...
Among current stuff, True Blood and Burn Notice are the two highlights of my weekly TV roster (and where has Burn Notice been the past couple weeks?). Defying Gravity is climbing up there with them. Leverage is midly entertaining, albeit a bit cheesy, and I keep up with Entourage.
As far as stuff that I’ve watched previousy…. Battlestar Galactica is the best Sci-Fi show ever. Period. Although Torchwood is pretty good, especially if you’re a Doctor Who fan. I went and re-watched the entire Prison Break series awhile back (I’d seen it when it was on TV, but never really took it in), and that was highly addictive. Same with 24.

Absolutely, IMO.
Even if you’re not a Sci-Fi geek, it’s a great show because they don’t really focus much on the sci-fi geekyness side of things. The focus is mostly on the storyline and the characters, and just about everything in that aspect of it is really, really good.
It does kind of get a little slow at the end of season 2, but it picks back up once you get into season 3.

I like that show, though I’m mildly embarrassed to admit it. But actually, it’s a typically great HBO production – I like almost any drama they put out. Sopranos is still easily the best series I’ve ever seen

The first two seasons was some truly great scifi. Just great TV, really. I thought it started going off the rails with Season three. I’m just finishing up the last half of season 4 and there have been some very good episodes but the show as a whole I find much less satisfying.

If the Shield was your favorite show (and it’s certainly in my top 5) you definitely should be watching Sons of Anarchy. The show’s creator, Kurt Sutter, was one of the main writers on The Shield and also played the Armenian hitman Margos. He’s also married to Katey Segal, who is just brilliant on the show. Jay Karnes (Dutch) also shows up for a few episodes, though in a VERY different role from the one he played in the Barn, and the One-Niners have made a few appearances.
The rest of the cast is also excellent- Charlie Hunnam (Green Street Hooligans), Ron Perlman (lots of stuff), Dayton Callie (Deadwood), Kim Coates (CSI Miami), Maggie Siff (Mad Men), Mitch Pileggi (X-Files), Drea DeMatteo (Sopranos), Ally Walker (Profiler), Ryan Hurst (Remember the Titans), and Sprague Grayden (Six Feet Under). Alan Arkin & Henry Rollins are joining the cast this season.
It takes a couple episodes to get going- the third episode hooked me for the season- and once Jay Karnes and Ally Walker’s characters show up mid-season, things really hit high gear. It’s not The Shield yet, but I think it’s going to be a worthy successor.

Honestly
Friday Night Lights, the TV series of course, is one of the best shows I’ve seen on TV. It has really great acting IMO, and got absolutely hosed by NBC. Luckily it got renewed for two more seasons (the upcoming one will be its fourth), but it airs on DirecTV only until NBC airs it in the Spring (starting in January I believe). Seasons 1-3 are most definitely worth a watch, especially if you love football at all, and it does give a very good insight into past (and perhaps current) issues in American society despite the football aspect. Great show and undoubtedly worth a look.

My dad was a high school coach for 20 years before he went into administration, and when we were little kids, we didn’t watch Barney, we watched game tape. I missed five and a half of my high school’s football games from the year I was born until the year I went to college. The half-game I missed was when I fell in the bleachers in fourth grade and had to be taken to the hospital.
All that said, I can never get over how fake the football scenes seem in TV shows, movies, whatever. FNL has better ones than most, but the actual football still seems too forced and unnatural to me. The fact that one of the main premises of the show, the coach being at the same school where his wife is principal, violates state law also put me off, but that’s a minor thing I guess.

As I'm a girl, my list is probably a little different
but everyone should watch, (not in any order)
The Wire
Battlestar Galactica
NCIS
The Unit
The Shield
Sons of Anarchy
Those are all recent. Babylon 5 would be at the top of my list of older shows to recommend. With all due homage to BSG, Babylon 5 is hands down the best Sci-Fi series ever made, even if the special effects are a little dated.
If you’re interested I can extol on its greatness at length.

NCIS
I used to watch that pretty faithfully in the beginning, but I kinda stopped watching over the last year or so. Probably could use to catch up on that. I know they’re CSIing it with an NCIS: LA spinoff or something this fall.

If you like smart comedy and aren't watching Big Bang Theory, you're missing out
Dr. Sheldon Cooper is the funniest character on television. He reached Cosmo Kramer levels of zany hilarity this season.
The jokes, analogies, and gags are full of obscure and complex science references that are hilarious whether you understand the references or not. If you’re a nerd or have any nerd-like tendencies you’ll appreciate it even more.

Solid choice
Although I’m sort of worried that over time I’ll get tired of it like I did Two and a Half Men; both shows are very funny, but Chuck Lorre (the creator of both) tends to play on the same jokes seventy trillion times in a different variation…
by Conjunction on Sep 2, 2009 7:52 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is a fair point
I think, though, that the subject matter and acting could make the difference. Charlie Sheen is basically playing himself and there’s only so many ways you can do drunken whoring around, accompanied by a whiny idiotic brother without it becoming repetitive.
I think there is more that Jim Parsons can do with Sheldon. At the core, he’s brilliant, neurotic, and totally devoid of people skills. Granted, that can become repetitive too if not done in the right way (and with Lorre that’s a valid concern), but Lorre has the ability to write it in more varying ways than he does Charlie Harper.

I've tried watching that show twice.
And I haven’t been able to finish an episode. I think it’s that it’s too overthetop nerdy/unbelievable, but maybe that’s because I know too many nerdy people. I guess I’ll try watching it again.

I don't mean the science part is unbelievable.
It’s just weird seeing nerds in a sitcom…it’s like it’s too nerdy-chic, does that make any sense?
Maybe it’s that the main character is OCD in addition to being a nerd. I don’t associate the two, but perhaps don’t like that the show seems to. This might be me just not liking the character or could me being too easily ‘offended’ …

Ahh, thanks for clarifying what you meant
The nerdy chic deal is a good point. I’ve been called a nerd since I was a kid, so I know it’s not exactly the “cool” thing to be. I never did really care, and in fact I rather enjoy it, but yeah, it’s certainly strange for the nerds to be the cool ones for once.

BBT is one of my favorite shows.
It’s definitely hilarious, and it’s an awesome show, especially because of the humor. It’s gotta rank up there with HIMYM, in my opinion, even though the sumor portrayed is of a different variety than HIMYM. Awesome, awesome show.

They're getting away from what made the show great IMO...
Especially when they run hour-long episodes…
They keep digging deeper into some of these storylines, and they just kinda take away from everything…

A couple more suggestions
Burn Notice is a sharp spy show on USA. While you’re there, check out Psych for a little mystery and a little fun.
Nip/Tuck pushes the edge in a sexy series about plastic surgeons. Dollhouse is another show that takes some risks.

It’s not the best show ever created, but it’s a fun little ‘detective’ show that doesn’t take itself too seriously. They just started up a new season, and something is different about it, but I can’t put my finger on it. Lighting or tone or something…
My wife and I will record it and then watch Saturday mornings or randomly throughout the weekend. Good stuff

Hmm
If I had to make a list (and please note, I’m 26, so maybe M*A*S*H was great, and Cheers seemed great, but they simply weren’t in my “prime”…Wonder Years, on the other hand, probably benefits from being watched when I was 8):
1. Six Feet Under
2. Sopranos
3. The Wire (these top three make the trinity of excellent TV drama and made up for a horrible decade in cinema)
4. Arrested Development (best comedy, hands down, enjoys the James Dean effect of leaving in its prime, but had great self referential ability and is infinitely quotable)
5. Simpsons (in its prime, it was the best satire around)
6. Mad Men (created by a Sopranos writer, and you can tell. Attention to detail and characterization is currently unmatched)
7. Lost (this show is my Ike, and I its Tina)
8. Southpark (Not in vogue, never in vogue, but takes the great satire mantle from Simpsons when its “on”, which isn’t always
9.30 Rock (sharpest comedy on basic network tv)
10. The Office (taking both the UK and US editions into account bumps this up onto the list)
Just Missed: Always Sunny In Philadelphia (nothing classic about it, just great, irreverent, not up in its own ass humor…consistency kept it out of the top ten)
Other shows I’ve watched in full and enjoyed: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, Weeds, Entourage, Flight of the Conchords, Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared, Chappelle Show
On my “To watch list”: How I Met Your Mother (have seen 5-6 episodes), Rome, Deadwood, and maybe True Blood, just because of Alan Ball

Heresy!
Really, without the Sopranos, the Wire could never have existed. The Sopranos essentially created the 50+ hour long movie genre. Yeah, there were some hit or miss story lines, and David Chase’s dabbling in the artsy side of mob television had its downside.
I always see things like movies, music, and tv shows in their context. When the Sopranos came out, it wasn’t at all obvious that people would invest not only their time but also money in a show like that (the success of the Sopranos allowed HBO to actually attract subscribers by producing very expensive tv series). That people would put up with an entire episode of plot setting without any real action was not obvious at all – in fact, pre-Sopranos shows that essentially demanded a long-term commitment at onset tended to die quick deaths.
At least that is how I see it.
Go Rice Owls!

They are 1 and 1A, for me
The Sopranos had better directing. The Wire had better writing.
The Sopranos leads, JG, EF, Michael Imperioli (very underrated), were superior actors to anybody on the Wire, but I think the entire ensemble of the Wire outperforms the Sop cast. There were some pretty mediocre actors on the Sopranos, hardly any on the Wire.
But it seems like you are saying they are very similar shows, and I don’t think that’s the case at all. The Sopranos, essentially, is really about one character, while the Wire is about institutions and society. Character development was key for David Chase, and secondary to David Simon. There was also comparatively little social commentary in the former, whereas obviously social commentary seemed to be the primary goal with Simon and Burns. The 2 biggest things I think they had in common was the admirable, tremendously rare resistance to easy payoffs (any other show would have Tony finding out about Melfi’s rapist and then “dealing” with him, for example), and the point you alluded to, that they rejected the notion that each episode needed to have the conflicts it introduced resolved by the end of that same episode.

Lets see
I’m completely stoked for IASIP and Curb Your Enthusiasm to start up this month. For those that don’t know, the story arc for this season’s Curb is that their making a Seinfeld Reunion show (within the show) and all the actors will be playing themselves for the writing process, rehearsals, etc. Considering Seinfeld is my all-time favorite, it should be a blast with Larry thrown in the mix.
Current favorite show on TV: 30 Rock. Can’t wait for it to start
Crap I’ve watched lately:
True Blood: It’s been spinning its wheels for a few weeks but still entertaining. There’s going to be some weird shit going on in the finale.
Hung: It’s an average show with some generic plot twists but the acting is pretty solid
Mad Men: Omfg awesome
Entourage: This show has gotten so terrible and I honestly don’t know why I watch it. I guess Ari is still pretty good and Sloan is nice to look at.
Real Time with Bill Maher: Because I’m a socialist commie babykiller satanist.
I’ll be excited as always for South Park when it starts up in October. I think that’s most of my “Must See TV”. And if you haven’t watched The Wire yet, you really should.

House
my guess is it has something to do with their contracts and getting lead billing. They are also prominently featured on the DVD packaging, even though they are not really featured on the show.
I also heard/read that Cameron and Chase are going to be back on House’s team this season. If that is the case, I would think that someone has to go since a five-man team plus House would be really crowded. Taub or 13 could be fired, or 13 could start having Huntington’s complications and have to leave the team. Or they could split the team and have Foreman in charge of one and House in charge of the other. Or if House is in the looney bin for a lot of the season, it would only be a team of five people total (13, Taub, Chase, Cameron and Foreman), the same as season 4 and 5. Guess we will have to wait and see.

With cars...
…it seems to me that most auto journalists are old, and compared to cars, say 20 years ago, there aren’t many that really suck. And I’ve read a few that were negative. Reviews for my car aren’t that great in the performance department, that’s for sure. In fact they called it pretty dull or something like that, which is pretty accurate I guess.

Reviews
The reviews I read about cars never seem to say anything negative at all. I think they just ignore the bad aspects. They are not really lying, they are just failing to mention the bad aspects. This makes sense when you realize that their advertisers are the car companies and if you are in the media, you can’t say bad things about your advertisers.

He told some hilarious stories about living in Dallas with the neighbors that inspired King of the Hill.

This week they have been doing all animal-related topics, and I have been consistently enthralled. They had a forensic pathologist that helped solve animal abuse crimes, a woman w/ Arnsperger’s that made her particularly attuned to animal emotions, but I can’t do the summary justice. Check em out:
And I agree, KOTH was pretty good, sometimes better, but nothing to write home about.

One more thing, DishTV related
We got it on Sunday, and we have a frequent but intermittent problem.
The HD channels’ volume will just suddenly attenuate dramatically. It’s weird; they don’t actually mute, but the vol goes dramatically down and the dialogue or singing goes completely incognito. The corresponding SD channel ALWAYS has perfect volume when we check it.
After talking w/ someone on the phone who’d never heard of the issue, they sent a tech out yesterday. Unfortunately, the wife was there, not me, to deal w/ em. The assclown claims that it must be the broadcasting channel, cuz there’s nothing wrong w/ the dvr. He also says that they have run into this many times before, but are convinced it isn’t their gear causing it.
This is completely fucking counter intuitive. First off, why would it be HBO or Showtime’s issue if the corresponding SD channel had no sound issues?? Furthermore, I have done the best informal survey I could amongst peeps w/ all varieties of cable and directv, and NOBODY has ever seen this happen w/ their HD channels. And this fool says he hears about this problem all the time, but it can’t be a DishTV issue? Really?
Have you run into this issue at all w/ Dish (assuming you have HD)?

You might try that scanning thing to see if it fixes it. When things begin to fuck up with my DVR that usually fixes the problem.

Since we're in the summer break...
…not a lot of network stuff to keep tabs on. HIMYM and Big Bang Theory are household favorites. They’re some of my favorites. They’re also just about the only thing outside of the Daily Show/Colbert Report that my wife takes time out of her day to actually sit down and watch.
My DVR is ready and waiting for 30 Rock, My Name is Earl, Lost, Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, which are out of season. Hell, even Jeopardy is in reruns right now.
I’ve been catching up with Dexter via Netflix. That’s definitely one of my favorites.
Among stuff that I am watching regularly that IS in season right now, Mad Men is incredibly good. True Blood is fun, but empty. I still watch it. I love Top Gear and my dream job at this point is executive producing an american version. I’ve been watching Warehouse 13 on Sci-Fi and that’s kind of fun. Hung hasn’t been great but hasn’t been bad. I used to really like Rescue Me, but I’ve lost a little interest. I still watch it, but it may sit in the DVR for a few days before I get to it.

I was keeping an eye on that
I was cautiously optimistic.
I think what would be perfect would be if HBO ended up with it. They believe in high production values, have a higher threashold for patience in building an audience, and would allow for the needed editorial freedom.

I am afraid it would suck
In America, no magazines or TV shows that review things ever criticize the products. Read Car and Driver and find the last time they said a car sucked. The same goes for magazines that review other things: computers, guns, etc… The great thing about Top Gear is that when a car sucks, the hosts talk about it. They are very critical which is very entertaining. If the American show just talked about how great cars were, it would be very boring. I can also see the “Star in a reasonably priced car” segments basically taking over the show and being used to market other shows on the same network. I just have no faith that an American version of the show would even come close to approaching the greatness that is Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson.

I was aluding to that earlier
I didn’t articulate it specifically, but that’s one of the big reasons why I would want it on HBO or another non-advertiser driven format. That’s part of the “needed editorial freedom” I mentioned.

Yep
If they had it on any of the four major networks, the auto industry would be big advertisers (which makes sense since it would be a show about cars) but that would mean that no bad words could be said about them. The 2011 Ford Fiesta would be an awesome car in the same class as the Bugatti Veyron and Pagani Zonda.
If I am not mistaken, I think the BBC is commercial free so that may be why they are allowed to speak their minds about what they review.

I've been commenting but time for my official list
I’m having a hard time truly ranking so I’ll just separate into tiers:
House
30 Rock
The Office
-———-
Fringe
The Big Bang Theory
24
Dollhouse
How I Met Your Mother
South Park
Curb Your Enthusiasm (Excited it’s finally back)
-———-
Rescue Me
Friday Night Lights
Mad Men (I came into it late, still need to see season 1 & most of 2)
Psych
Entourage (For Ari & Sloan, obviously)
As far as older stuff:
-I still enjoy watching Seinfeld reruns
-Hulu for Arrested Development is a favorite thing to do when I’m bored (or desperately need a laugh, such as after a Rangers heartbreak)
-I have Chappelle’s Show on DVD, wish he could’ve done another season or two before walking away
-Based on the pilot, I anticipate Glee will be a guilty pleasure.

Right
Sports is the only thing I watch live, and then only sometimes. I often try to record the 1st half of a sporting event and then catch up by the end by skipping commercials. I see no reason to waste my time watching commercials when there are so many better things to watch.

only way to go is to record the first hour or so and then skip the commercials.

I have to stay up late at night to watch ANYTHING else. And if the Rangers are off I’m usually playing catch up from work not done the night before.
I have a DVR, but it’s useless to me right now because I have no time to watch anything it records. I have like 15 hours of Nova on it I haven’t even looked at to see what they are.

Mad Men
I still don’t get the appeal. I watched the entire first season really trying to like it but I just didn’t. Once I got past the 60’s schtick there isn’t much to it. Ok, everyone smokes, drinks, and screws around…..we got it. There is only one interesting character in the entire show (Don Draper). The rest are just boring wastes of time between Draper’s scenes. His wife is just flat annoying and a terrible actress. It is a nice visual show though, I will give them that.
