Final Top 20 Prospects column
The folks at MLB.com posted the latest installment of my weekly ranking of the top 20 prospects in the Rangers’ farm system this morning on the official Rangers website, www.texasrangers.com. This is the final weekly ranking of the season, as the minor leagues have completed regular season play.
Here’s a direct link to the column:
Please note that the column is set up to allow fan comments at the bottom of the page.
Also, I’m told that Yahoo might have implemented a fix in the last couple days – if you’re a Yahoo user and receiving this much later than 8 a.m., please let me know.

Hmmm...
Shouldn’t Daniel Gutierrez be ranked around Boscan? Is he really not even top 20?
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Good catch
I like the list overall. I personally like Ross over Kiker, but the rankings seem sound. Jamey, no honorable mention list? Can you include an hon.mention in the next update?

There will be a top 72 in the book.
Doubt I’ll do an honorable mention for the web column.

The bound edition
will have a different feel to it this year, with the major league success, and the important part the graduating rookies played in that success. The success of the player acquisition and development is the story of the year for me.

Sad Panda
Sad to see Neil Ramirez isn’t on there. It’s not a criticism of the list, but a lamentation of his fall from grace as a prospect.
Just a reminder of how risky high-ceiling prep arms are and how valuable multiple first-round picks can be

He showed some signs at the end...
He still has time.
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

First-hand account of NeRa?
Did you see something at his games that suggest that he made solid progress during the season?
Given that you are the Hickory expert around here, I would also appreaciate hearing how would you rank Wieland, Boscan, Font, and NeRa based upon what you expect of them in 2 or 3 years?

JURICKSON PROFAR (2010 contract) / LUIS SARDINAS (2010 contract)
AZRL for them next year? I guess they’d each be 17?

Probably.
But I might change my opinion in a month.

Can't wait to add Scheppers to that list.
The major prospects are all there, of course. I think I’d put Gutierrez 10, and flip Weiland and Moreland.
10. Gutierrez
11. Beavan
12. Moreland
13. Weiland
Does anyone know how Telis’ defense rates thus far?

Had the same question about Telis...
He’s got to be raw just from converting to the position pretty recently.
Totally forgot about Scheppers…!

Yeah
from all reports he’s still very raw defensively for a professional catcher.

Telis
Think he breaks with Hickory next year? Or another season in Spokane?
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Telis seems to be following the Beltre/Santana
Rookie league with taste of Northwest League in as an 18 year old
Full-season A as a 19 year old
Telis should start 2010 in Hickory
Yeah
Can’t imagine giving him a cameo in Spokane if the plan weren’t to start him in Hickory. He needs the extra game work defensively, too, I would think.

Im assuming he plays winter ball?
To work on his position skills.

Don't know
Definitely think he’d be at instructs though

I'd prefer that approach
some time out of ingame action focusing on skills would be better I think.

Yeah thats probably better

Only has one option left? When did we use the second one?
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock
This year
Last year he was brought up and then sent back down burning one. Then this year he used his second. Next year will be his third and final

When did we have him up this year?
I must have a pretty bad memory, because I don’t remember us calling him up this year.

We didn't
But since he was on the 40 man roster at the end of spring training and didn’t make the 25 man roster he was optioned to OKC

Ah.
Sucks that that burns anoption then.
