Thursday morning status quo
Another win against the Indians and another big offensive game overall, but wins by LA and Boston keep the races static. Scott Feldman was terrific again and is going from underrated to overrated nationally (which I have no problem with) really fast.
Jeff Wilson details Feldman's road successes. Feldman is closing in some crazy marks, and his road wins number (currently 12) is getting him some attention.
Richard Durrett asks whether folks would slot Feldman in game one of a playoff series. That's an easy yes for me.
Jen Floyd Engel isn't quite obsessing over the Rangers, but she likes talking September baseball.

Love me some Feldman
But the article isn’t that far off.
Feldman has been a certified badass for us; however, in terms of dominating the mount both Jackson and Greinke have been far better.
If he locates his fastball better, improves his curveball some more, and maintains the dominance with his cutter — then we may be talking Feldman for Cy Young in a year or two. This year; however, he is just a really good starting pitcher — not a genuine Cy Young candidate.
Its always amazing
when some idiot wants to crucify a national writer for writing a reasonable piece instead of the ridiculous puff piece the idiot wants to see.

I’m just not a fan of the national sports media machine ESPN or Neyer. The article was an after thought, if Feldman was on a Massive Market Team like Boston or New York or LA or a recent contender the mention of Feldman wouldn’t have come a day later…as an “opps I forgot to mention.” And then done in a way that was “Well I would have talked but about him more but he’s not really worth mentioning..”
Scott Feldman – "The greatest Hawaiian-born Jewish baseball player to ever set foot on the mound."
I don't think Neyer/Law fall into that category.
I’m not an ESPN insider, but those two guys are far, far better. Neyer worked with Bill James, and (I believe) is actually a Royals fan.
Yeah, Neyer doesn't deserve to be lumped in with that group
Neyer is a smart guy who actually does analysis. If he writes something it’s not because of a major market bias.

How do you know I wasn't?
Scott Feldman – "The greatest Hawaiian-born Jewish baseball player to ever set foot on the mound."
I wouldn't say Jackson has been far better than Feldman.
Greinke, of course, has been far better. No one in the AL has been as good as Greinke, and his season could be ranked as one of the top seasons in the past 20 years. If anyone other than Greinke wins the Cy Young, it will be completely unjustified and unfair.
Jackson does strike out more hitters, but he gives up more HRs. Jackson’s and Feldman’s FIP are 4.11 and 4.00, respectively. Feldman has walked slightly fewer, but he’s let up significantly fewer home runs. In the weighting method of FIP, this overcomes his lower strike out rate.
I think HR prevention is a really important skill, and one that Feldman has the potential to excel in.

Good points
I didn’t look closely at Jackson and was simply going off of things I’d heard.
Greinke definately deserves it over all others..
Felix Hernandez
should also get a fair amount of consideration. I put Greinke and him at 1 and 2, with Feldman at 3rd. If Feldman finishes the season strong, with outings like his past few then that has the potential to change though.

If we make the playoffs, we need to ride with who finished the season strong. In the playoffs, the game of inches analogy is true and the smallest slip-up could cost you a game/playoff series. I just don’t see someone like Millwood who has been struggling to all of a sudden turn it around and be solid in the playoffs (maybe because his arm is tired).
Starters
1. Feldman
2. Hunter
3. Millwood*
For the playoffs, make Holland the Lefty specialist out of the Pen since we only have CJ.
As of right now, we only trust Frankie, CJ, Feliz, O’Day, and maybe Grilli.
- - Back to Millwood. If you can give him some rest at the end of the season and the beginning of the playoffs, his arm might freshen up and he might excel again. He would also be pitching later in the round where the pressure might be higher and him being a veteran might help.
The most important thing is to start the playoffs winning to build up confidence and that’s where I don’t want Millwood to start.
Agree with starters
But you have to remove Grilli off the post season roster. He has lost his effectiveness at the end of the season. 7 runs in his last 9 appearances. Why are people (not you but in general) so down on Willie Eyre? He has been effective the limited times the Rangers used him this season with like only 1 bad night. Brandon McCarthy and Dustin Nippert would be a coin flip as each is good every other time they pitch.

I think the GM in Seattle deserves the award this year. They lost 100 games last year and are going to win 85+ this year largely because of the moves he made last off-season.
Little Boy Donuts f’d up his budget once again ($ 25 million of a small market payroll went to Blalock, Padilla, Cat) ,didn’t sign a free agent, whiffed at the winter meetings and trade deadline plus didn’t sign his number one draft pick.

Who gave Padilla & Cat their contracts?
Who greenlighted Blalock’s option when he obviously couldn’t stand the player?
Who gave nearly $ 10 million to Fukomori, Jennings, Broussard in 2007?
Who couldn’t do jack shit at the trade deadline (while the Red Sox got VMartinez) because they had foolishly spent their money alloted?
There is now a safeguard in place (Nolan Ryan) to curtail or eliminate foolish spending but the mistakes (for which JD was completely to blame) of the past hurt the team this year.
Getting Tiny E and Feliz was huge plus he’s done mostly good work in the bully but Jon Daniels was not the best GM in the AL this year.

Find me a GM with an unblemished resume, then
JD has made some mistakes. Some were clearly bad ideas from the get-go, others were good decisions that worked out okay, though not optimally, others were good decisions that just didn’t work. Take Padilla for example. His contract was a good value at the time and the Rangers got a fair amount of value from him until he went off the deep end.
Take a look at the good things JD has done, namely his trade, draft, and waiver wire acquisitions. JD was handed an absolute disaster of a franchise and has turned it into a club well positioned to compete for a decade. Not only that, but they’re a serious playoff contender at least a year ahead of schedule.
Show me a GM who has never made a mistake and I’ll show you a GM who probably hasn’t taken any chances to make his club better. JD has made mistakes, yes, but I think any rational observer would contend that his success vastly outweigh his mistakes, especially when you look at the W-L record.

Do you think spending $ 6 million on Blalock this year was wise when Abreu was available at a cheaper rate?
It’s the difference in the AL West this year.
Bobby Abreu is and has been kicking ass all year long and Hank F Blalock is now getting the Jason Botts treatment so a piece of shit with a .265 obp that the GM drafted can play.

But you like Blalock.
Apparently you would rather he be playing over Chris Davis. Ergo, it must be a good thing that his option were picked up.
"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin
The issue is whether or not
it was wise for JD to pick up Blalock’s option at $ 6.2 mllion. Who cares who I like?
The fundamental issue was the choice JD made between Hank F & Bobby Abreu.
Abreu is better, was cheaper, had a better history of health and on September 10th is not buried on the bench when the most important games of the year are being played.
That move was the difference-maker in the AL West this year and yet another reason why JD should not be considered the best GM in the AL this year.

Abreu...
has a career 74 OPS + against left handers. He’s had a great season, I’m not saying he hasn’t, but did we really need another left handed bat in here? Particularly given the other left handed batters in the lineup?
What they needed coming into the season was a right-handed power bat. Cruz turned out to fill that role, Andruw Jones unfortunately didn’t.

There was no way in hell to predict back in early November that Abreu and Burrell would get the kind of contracts they got. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Based on our roster construction and the way Hank played in September a one year 6 million dollar contract was a great option. If we would have been able to wait until December then no we probably don’t excercise it because by then the signs were there that guys were not getting what they expected. But we couldn’t wait. We only had ten days from the end of the world series to decide. Had we declined it and the markets nit tanked then we would have either overpayyed for a DH or not had one. We had to make the decision on Blalock long before the market for Abreu was set. Do you think it was reasonable to suspect in early Nov. 08 that Abreu could be had for 5m? Give me a fucking break. Hindsight is always 20/20, and you’re a little bitch.
The main problem...
isn’t even the market for Abreu being set after Blalock’s extension was inked. The issue is that Abreu and Blalock are not equivlaent players. Abreu isn’t a first baseman.

My identity is not tied up into the
Texas Tech football team like boomer’s identity (and all the likeminded dumbasses of the Sooner Nation) is.
Tech fans are conditioned for the team to generally go a very entertaining 8-4 with at least one unexplainable win and loss.
We’re also conditioned to watch our team beat the living shit out of Texas A&M.

Your time is coming, my friend
Barring a simultaneous and total collapse of the top-tier programs in the region (Texas and OU), Tech’s ceiling is probably we saw last year. A&M’s ceiling is much higher. The talent is arriving in droves, and now that we’re arguably on the right track (I have 110% faith in Sherman), the natural order will be restored and Texas A&M will once again reassert its dominance over Tech, Baylor, Okie Lite, and other lesser programs.

Yes, forgive me for being passionate even during the lean years
I won’t argue with Tech’s ownership of A&M, particularly in Lubbock. A combination of being outcoached and having some sort of mental block since the Zach Thomas INT has killed us.
Baylor, though, is a different story. Baylor has beaten Texas A&M twice in the last TWENTY YEARS. Those two wins have come during the most disastrous period for Aggie football since the 1960s. Sadly, though, those two wins have been the high point of Baylor football in recent history. Baylor f needs to, you know, actually qualify for a bowl before they start crowing about their awesomeness.
"Feldman and Feliz and and pray for…infectious disease?"--TheJeezus on Sep 9, 2009 1:01 PM PDT
In all honesty,
I’m surprised the Aggies have fallen this far because it makes absolutely no sense.
You have money, tradition, resources, carte blanche from the NCAA, sit square in the middle of the most fertile land of football recruits in the country within 100 miles or so of one largest cities in the country yet constantly trip over your dick on the football field when you play Texas Tech and it’s been that way for a very long time.
Tech turned it around with A&M in ‘82 which was Sherrill’s first year and save a 5 year window (’90-94) before the ZThomas Pick 6 have been the Alpha male in this series ever since.
The funniest thing I’ve ever seen on a football field happened when Tech beat A&M in 2001 and then took the goal-post and jammed it into the A&M section of fans.

RCCook
I can separate the two.
I am loving what is happening this year not only because I’ve followed this team for 35 years but also because this was the year they’ve proved everybody but the mindless cheerleaders wrong.
Jamey said he had a “hunch” This Thing would turn around in 2009 and he was right. Give him credit.
Yet, the biggest reason this team is winning is because Nolan Ryan is here. What happened this year and what happened from 2006-2008 was not coincidental so give me credit for saying that the hiring of Nolan Ryan was the best thing Tom Hicks ever did as owner of the Texas Rangers.
Little Boy Donuts now had a boss that he could not bullshit.
I love what has happened this year because Nolan Ryan said his management style is to observe, suggest and then implement change. He also said this team (when Little Boy Donuts was backpedaling like a mf saying 2010 was the year) would win at least 87 games.
Nolan Ryan does not bullshit and he is a man of great pride who cares that his name is on the product. He is one of those magical people you meet in life who makes everybody around them better or those people are gone.

And now its time to make Josey run away
These are all questions you’ve avoided before, so you know the drill:
1. How is Nolan responsible for turning this team around when he did not bring in any of the talent on the 2009 roster?
2. Can you identify any decision by Nolan that JD disagreed with? Can you identify any bad decisions by JD that Nolan vetoed?
3. Why are JD and Wash still here?
Also
4. Can you provide us with evidence, aside from comments by one player not good enough to hack it in MLB any more, that the vets on the club don’t respect JD?

Jan 7th, 2009 was not a good day for you...
among your tidbits that day:
Having Marlon Byrd in the line-up makes me puke.
Byrd is not going to be here when or if this thing turns around and if Boggs is a player, he will be here for the good times.

Did somebody sprinkle fairy dust over the starting pitchers, the defense and is the perpetually stupid Ron Washington no longer considered an organizational joke (as was reported last fall)?
maybe somebody did….

I couldn't agree more that Nolan Ryan is the man.
I’ve followed the Rangers for 35 years as well(Yikes!). However, point to one thing Nolan did for this team that made them better, and I mean Nolan alone, not the organization. The “throwing more pitches” meme has been proven to be bunk. Nolan would tell you the truth, and it’s not a damn thing. Why? Because baseball and baseball operations are a team game. No one on a team is solely responsible for anything.
Your 2009 Snow Monkey Ambassador
Nolan's mantra is to observe, suggest and then
implement change.
Pitching & defense were the obvious problems of 2008.
Attendance in 2008 was also a major problem (down 600,000 since October 2005).
Changes were implemented and the reviews are largely positive. To claim it all one big coincidence (or some part of a 5 Step Plan bullshit authored by LBD & Thadwick) would be rather foolish.
All hail, Nolan Ryan!!

that This Thing is 19 games over .500 and in a fight for a playoff spot because of the players here. The same players that were brought here by JD who has set this team up for a major run, not just this year, but for the next few years.
Nolan Ryan has very little/nothing to do with this team winning games.
If you want to play the “changing the mindset” card for this team to focus more on pitching and defense then JD and Wash are far more responsible for that than Ryan is.

Here is what you said in January 2009
If healthy, $ 6.2 million for this year should be a bargain
uh, no
What if Blalock puts up 30 HR with a .900 OPS this year as a DH? He’s young, in his prime and a known entitiy. Once again, Smoak is not a known entity and may be a helluva trade piece as well.
30 bombs, check if he got the playing time
.900 OPS, currently at .744 so that won’t happen so what does that .156 in OPS cost him?
Do you just kick Blalock to the curb because of his past and because you have another kid coming up or do you offer him 3 years / $ 36 million (an offer a little bit better than Bradley’s)?
I think the curb is coming.

So your saying the safeguard (Ryan) failed by allowing JD to foolishly pick up Hank’s contract.
I believe
JD had a budget of $ 68 million to work with but anything above and beyond that would have to be greenlighted by Nolan.
Trades & free agents also have to be ok’d by Nolan Ryan.
We don’t have a conventional GM because most are allowed to go to the Winter Meetings without having their hands held by the Prez of the team but given the results of 2006-2008 and this year, JD seems to work better with those kind of restraints.

His rants against Hicks were, and still are, clearly based out of a dislike for Hicks, not out of intelligent analysis of the franchise.
His “Empty Golf Shirt” moniker for Hart was funny at first, but got old a) after the 10,000th use of it and b) when it became apparent that he had no deeper analysis of Hart’s performance.
He had a lovefest over Grady Fuson when he left the organization, never once checking to see whether Fuson actually drafted well.
He slobbered over Doug Melvin for column after column but was too stupid to realize Doug Melvin’s contributions to this club were overrated, he simply took credit for much of Tom Grieve’s work.

Hard to pull for a reliever.
Especially over two starters like Porcello or Andrus.
Beckham hasn’t been up as long and has done well — I really see it as a tough call between Porcello and Andrus as both have had significant impacts on contending teams.
Bailey
He’s been a shut down closer for the A’s. I think he’ll get plenty of votes and I think he is deserving. Personally I think Elvis and Porcello will have much more impactful careers, but just basing it on this year – Bailey has been lights out for about 80 innings and I wouldn’t think it was a travesty if he won.

Elvis has been here all year
He is responsible (not solely, but the main reason) for the defensive turnaround. He is batting over .300 since the ASB. Highlight reel plays on a weekly basis minimum. Porcello is good, but pitches every 5 days. Beckham has a good bat, but plays on a team with sub .500 record. Plus, Beckham hasn’t played the whole year with the Pale Hoes. Imo, Elvis in a landslide.
Your 2009 Snow Monkey Ambassador
The Rangers' finish in the standings will pay a major role in the race, I think
If the Rangers don’t make the playoffs, then Elvis is probably on equal footing with other rookies from also-rans like Beckham and Bailey. If Porcello has a dominant start in the last few weeks for a playoff contender, that certainly bodes well for him.
But if the Rangers make the playoffs, it would be hard for the writers not to place Elvis near the top. He’s been an integral part of a club turnaround that has stunned the mainstream media types. He’s got the flashy D, he’s got all-around solid numbers, and he’s an everyday player on a playoff team. That’s a pretty strong resume.

Porcello 1.4

That's pretty significant
But as JB points out below, they’re just going to look at E’s standard stats, which is too bad.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
I don't think Elvis wins it
Sadly, enough voters will look at Batting average for Elvis and saves for Bailey or pedrigre for Porcello and go with the latter two.
Prediction, Elvis finishes 3rd or 4th.
IMO, the race is between Bailey, who has been superb, and Elvis.
Go Rice Owls!
We need to keep that Elvis highlight reel gif updated

Andrus has as much of a pedigree as Porcello.
He was a consistent top 20-30 prospect until his debut. With his huge 2nd half and his consistently excellent defense/range he plays I think he is all but a lock to win it.
Probably not to many of the voters
Elvis wasn’t a top prep prospect, didn’t get drafted in the 1st round and didn’t receive a huge signing bonus or ML contract. Elvis probably didn’t show up on some of the voters radar screens until after the ASB this year.
ROY voting seems to be a little different than MVP or Cy
Rookies are just that – guys with no pedigree. BBWAA can’t just say “I like Jeter”. Instead, they have to do a little digging to figure out a) who the rookies are, and; b) what they’ve done. Andrus’s highlight reel probably puts him on their radar.
The more I think about it, Andrus has just a good as chance as anyone to win it.

Hamilton is the only player on the team to possess that once-in-a-lifetime, five-tool (and all of them plus) skill set. Now, the years, drugs, and injuries have probably cost him some of that, but still.

I don't mind an off-day for the team right now.
They’re a little beat up and coming off a roadie plus there’s only one off-day left after today. Time for everybody to take a breath.
Angels play 11 games in 11 days while Texas & Boston play 9 games in that span.
Angels will beat Seattle tonight, take 2 of 3 from the Pale Hose over the weekend, split 4 games in NYC/Bos and lose 2 of 3 in Texas and will go 6-5 in that span.
Boston will go 5-4 in that span.
Texas needs to go 7-2 (meaning somebody gets swept) which will pull them even with the Sawx and 2.5 back of LAAA.
September 21-24 may end up deciding the season. LAAA goes home for three with the MF Yankees, Boston goes to KC for 4 games and we go to Oakland for 4 games.

to win 20 games this year.
I love his story and how he also just gets better and better. Feldman was the scourge of the earth in 2007 and two years later is the ace of a team that may make the playoffs and he may finish in the top 5 for the Cy Young.
This year he was also nice as hell to everybody at spring training on the back fields while Fat Fuck Kevin Millwood couldn’t be bothered. Feldman was very humble and cooperative with kids and other fans but Millwood rode in golf cart between stations with a sullen “get the fuck out of here” look on his face.

Feldman seems really down to earth.
The guy was what, a 30th round pick that was (at best) a replacement-level ROOGY?
I was impressed as all hell with him last year, considering he hadn’t started since college.
He’s got a new arm slot, a very good cutter, a developing curve, and good velocity (92-94).
And he’s still only 26 — there’s real potential in this guy. It’s cool to hear that he’s a good guy too — course, he’ll probably have to hide next spring training with all the press he’s starting to get.
Down to earth?
not really. Good baseball player? Yes. Got kicked out of Primos a few weeks back with Teagarden (who was the nice guy in the incident) and some buddies for refusing to not combine two tables in front of the patio door. Made such a scene that the mgr of the place asked him to leave.

Feldman continues to pitch like a man possessed. He was much better in 2008 once moved into the rotation, and has improved even more in 2009. #3, #4, #5 looks to be in good hands with Hunter, Millwood, Holland, McCarthy, and Feliz in 2010. They were going on and on about how incredible his rise has been.
They brought up how he was a 30th round pick, was a reliever in the minors and how decent he was last year.
Yet they never brought up the fact that he started out from down under making the switch to 3/4 only the last couple years.
It was kinda embarrassing.
I didn’t listen to the whole thing, but most of it, I’m hoping they brought that point up after I turned it off. Anyone else catch it?

What if Texas and Boston are tied at the end of the regular season?
1 game playoff
Evan Grant explains:
Any one-game playoff, whether it’s for the AL West with Los Angeles or the wild card with Boston, would most likely take place in Arlington.
Coin flips no longer determine playoff sites. Playoff sites are determined by head-to-head record as the first tie breaker. In both cases, the Rangers hold distinct advantages. They lead the Angels 9-3 with seven games between the teams remaining. The Angels could win the season series by winning all seven games, but if they do that, I’m relatively certain the Rangers won’t end up tied with them for the AL West lead.
The only exception to this is if Detroit and the Rangers were to tie for the wild card. Detroit currently has a 5.5 game lead on Minnesota in the Central, so that’s a pretty significant margin. And the Rangers actually lead the Tigers by 3.5 games in the overall standings, so if Detroit loses a 5.5 game lead in its division, I see no way it makes up 5.5 games in the wild card.
That said, if there is a one-game playoff, expect it to be in Arlington on Monday, Oct. 5.
I'm pretty sure
if somehow the Rangers ended up in a one game playoff with Detroit, it wouldn’t matter where it was. I’d just start planning for 2010. I hate that team…
Go Rice Owls!

Twins. And the Orioles. And all the mediocre teams we should’ve beaten but have strangely owned us this year.

I've decided 2nd to rooting for the Rangers,
I’m rooting for Colorodo to win the West and SF to win the wild card. LA can rot. I would love the fact that they were killing everyone in their way with Manny suspended and when he comes back, they have one of the most epic collapses in baseball history. That honestly would be one of the greatest feel good stories of the year, at least for me. LA is 1 game over .500 after the AS break. How awesome is that?
Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?
Dodgers
I don’t mind that team.
I like Kershaw, I like that they’re pretty no-name outside of Manny. I like when teams have strong to dominant pitching.
SF would be fun to watch for about the same reasons.

Boston Red Sox
Starting on September 15th, the Red Sox will end regular season playing 20 consecutive games without a day off. This includes a 3 game series against LAA and a 3 game series in NY. 10 road games in a row against BAL, KC and then NY.
That sounds pretty good to me. I think Boston will be tired going into NY and then they have to come home and play three against Toronto and four against Cleveland.
And the Angels are currently in the middle of there 20 consecutive games without a day off. This includes 3 IN Boston and 3 here. Also, 4 games against NYY.
These schedules sounds pretty beneficial to us going down the stretch.
We have 12 of the remaining 23 at home which includes the majority with Oakland, Seattle and LAA.
Besides the Angels when we play them, the biggest series in my mind will be that Tampa Bay series. We need to win 2 of 3 in that series without a doubt.
Looks like the wild card and the division are both within grasp depending on how LAA and BOS handle the fatigue of these 20 consecutive games without a day off.
Division looks more likely
Based on the BoSox and Angels’ schedules. Coolstandings agrees: 21% chance of division, 15% WC.
I’ll take any odds > 0% in Sep.
